And what about their new coach at osu?
Did anybody think to ask the question?
An aside comment: "Jonathan Smith has put together what appears to be a good, young coaching staff"

Interesting to get a perspective on the opponent from 'that side'.

If they throw a 2-4-5 at Ohio State, the Buckeyes will stuff the ball down their Beaver-throats.

HS

Hahaha, tell us your real opinion on the matter and please don’t hold back this time :)

HS

Ergh and this is why I never comment on Xs and Os posts!

Why would this defense be a good thing for Ohio State? As best I can google, this would be two linemen, four linebackers, and five DBs?  I really don’t have any idea WTF I’m talking about when it comes to Xs and Os. Any help is greatly appreciated, and ELI5.

HS

Yes, that is exactly what a 2-4-5 is. Unless their 2 DL can get some major penetration and draw some double teams, it would be rather easy to run against that scheme as the OL can easily get to the 2nd level to block the LB. I wouldn't expect Oregon State to throw that out in anything other than a 3rd and long situation

Sorry Urban, Woody is still my favorite

HS
analyticalguy's picture

If it was just third and somewhat long (6 to 8 yards), I'm guessing the Buckeyes could still choose to attack it with a run with a fairly high degree of success. just because of the superior athletes. And I'm not expecting to see many third a very long situations.

I feel sorry for them.

The funny thing is that if this were to happen Ryan Day would be more hated by the national media than Urban.  Absolutely nothing the national media hates more than running up the score.

HS
eastmemphisbuck's picture

Really? I've never seen one bad comment or article or verbalization about The Tide running up the score on St marys sister of the blind. In fact, they are expected to.

GO BUCKS!!!!

HS

Sorry should have been more clear with my comment.  Nothing the media hates more than Ohio State running up the score.

HS
eastmemphisbuck's picture

On that point you are absolutley correct brother!!!!!!!!!We could be playing the waterboys and cheerleaders by the 3rd qtr and the national media would roast us!

GO BUCKS!!!!!!!

HS

No one roasted Ohio State for the Rutgers or Nebraska scores last year.

HS

Someone really needs to do a 'Da Buckeyes' skit with a bunch of fat Ohio State fans choking on Skyline Chili or Roosters chicken.

Surely there's enough to pick from, myself included.

Great use of “not”! UV for that and for the desire to annihilate the competition this year.

I don't feel sorry for them.  They live in Oregon.  Its gorgeous out there. Corvalis is only 45 minutes from Eugene, and both are an hour from the sea and much closer to the mountains.

The Oregon coast line is one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen.

Oregon is absolutely gorgeous. I hope they can insulate themselves from the toxic leadership that seems to be taking hold up and down the west coast.

And what is that supposed to mean exactly???  Not a polictical take I assume, as that would be a violation of the commenting policy.

I agree, which is why despite living in Columbus for 34 years, I haven't missed it much except fall Saturdays for for the past 9 years. I absolutely love it out here. The Beach is about 90 minutes away (60 the way I drive), Mt. Hood is about 60 minutes away, Crater Lake is about 4 hours away, and while there are plenty of shithead drivers, it's still not too bad. There's no humidity, and aside from Crater Lake not a massive problem with mosquitoes either.

I doubt I will ever move from here actually, and unless Intel implodes I don't see any compelling reason to consider. .

Good thing about a 6'7" QB is it will be hard to get a targeting call when he is sacked.

Yeah, hopefully Bosa won’t be able to reach his helmet for a random and pointless head pop and game ejection like he did last year.

As Forrest Gump used to say, "You never know what you're gonna get." Especially from a completely new coaching staff in their first game. Watch out for the long throws to an NFL-potential receiver Isaiah Hodgins.

But if Oregon sportswriter Nick Daschel is at all accurate, everyone on the Buckeye two-deep (including the OR's) will play. Tate will get lots of reps, and we may see the 3rd QB.

Our honor defend, so we'll fight to the end !

HS

Do we even have a QB3 right now?

I don't know the status of his knee, but we have Matthew Baldwin. He seems like a stud. I think we also have two non-scholarship QBs, but I can't imagine them playing.

This could get real ugly fast! Unless they have a kicker who can go 60 yds or more for FGs, Im thinkin 84 to 0.

I hope to see a lot of the depth chart after the 10 min mark in the 3rd qtr.

GO BUCKS!!!

I'm most anxious to see the LB and secondary play this week. If we are solid in those areas this team is on a one way trip to a national title.

Offensive Line is also an area I will be looking closely at.  They drive the offense that could be special if they play well.  They need to gel together for the end of Sept games.  Go Bucks

I'm not so sure we should expect 60's in this one.  High 40's or 50-ish... I think Day will take his foot off the pedal.  Not like Urban who will go for it on 4th down and goal on the 5, with 54 points on the board and a few minutes left in the 4th.  And don't take that as a slight towards Urban.  I love every second of it.

Poor guy, LOL, he is definitely a realist and knows Oregon State isn't going to be very good this season. Also he said he doesn't expect this is a game they should be expected to be competitive...think about that for a minute and let it sink in!!! NOW! Thank your lucky stars that in your lifetime there has never been any game that you knew there was no chance the Buckeyes could compete! We have been and are a very lucky fanbase! Normally I would feel sorry for a team like this and wouldn't want the Buckeyes to run up the score...

That's normally, this year after all the shit thats been talked about us and the shit that will continue to flow our way from the media regardless of any score.....I say RUN IT UP, AND LEAVE NO DOUBT!! Keep the foot on the gas in every game and absolutely destroy everyone that you can, make it impossible for the CFP committee to leave us out by saying we didn't look impressive enough in some games. Believe me there will be media pressure to leave us out at the end of the year and it will have nothing to do with our record, margin of victory, strength of schedule or any other relevant measurement of whether the Buckeyes are one of the 4 best teams! It will have everything to do with the media's disdain for Urban Meyer and all things Ohio State, and their narrative about Domestic Violence and that we shouldn't be considered on a moral basis!

The only way to keep the committee from choosing someone other than us who on paper are close to us is to absolutely kick the living hell out of everyone possible! The only close games should be against elite top 10 type teams, and if you can stretch the score on them, by all means do so! If we lose a game, the media will push all other 1 loss teams as being better and more deserving to keep us out, you can bet on that!

It really is gonna be Ohio Against The World this season from every angle! So Run It Up Urban! Run it up Buckeyes! Defense, shut'em out! Leave NO Doubt!

GO BUCKS!

A.E. Porter

I am with several on this site, our program must destroy our opposition! No mercy, no foolish hopes that the national opinion of our team will not be heavily influenced by their dislike of Urban. We must witness devastation and make clear falsehood of any narrative that our team does not belong in the playoffs!

77 - 6 is my guess. Nice successful start against a weaker opponent. Many players play. Many sacks by our DL. Week 2 is tougher.

HS
JJBuckeye's picture

I want to see a big Buckeye victory like everyone else, but most importantly, I just want a W, without injuries.  It is going to be hot and humid.  Play a lot of players, keep them fresh and hydrated and be smart with our backup QB.  It is a long season.  Go Bucks

Yes, although Haskins and the receiving corp will get some work, at 250+ rushing yards allowed per game last year, I expect we will see the buckeyes play taxidermist and stuff the ball down their beaver throats.

It. Is. Time.

HS

First game of the season on a hot September day and an over-matched opponent should make for keeping it under sixty points on our end. They'll run it up with the first team in the first quarter. Let the DL eat. And then it will be all the commentators can do to keep up with the players going in and out. They'll make sure the game stays out of reach while getting as many guys in as they can.

By the by this is one of my favorite preview columns for the week's game.

You've got to kick at the darkness till it bleeds daylight.
