Love Mike Doss
Just posting and hoping my comment isn’t deleted.
Love the speech, love the man!
Get dumped then
Ruth, Namath, Doss
3 guys who called it right.
That tackle at :46 seconds was amazing.
Pain of Discipline
Pain of Regret
Take Your Pick
Been waiting for this one.
Him and Eddie are my two favorites. #2 had to be one of the toughest calls with Cris Carter among others.
Any insights into why he didn’t have the same success in the pros? All indicators seemed to have pointed to an amazing NFL career.
Injuries. Had a heck of a rookie season and then the injury bug hit him. Torn ACL I believe.
Thank you, sir. That’s what I thought but it’s been a while.
Damn skippy - the captain's Captain.
And bad-ass enough to come back for his senior year to claim that National Championship.
Hindsight is, and in, 2020
Tough decision for #2 CC was a freak but Doss coming back for his 4th year puts him over the top
CC’s unceremonious departure probably eliminates him IMHO.
Both CC and TP have baggage and left early.
Mike Doss came back for another year to help OSU win a championship!
It's athletics, and it's also character.

Choosing Carter here would have been similar to picking Michael Thomas over Mike Sensibaugh
Pick up your feet, turn your corners square! And DRIVE DRIVE DRIVE!!!
One of my all time favorites, loved watching him come up and make big hits.
Same here, I remember him being one of the hardest hitters I've ever seen.
I'm 0 for the last 3 on guessing these. Went with Carter here. But Doss is obviously a great choice as well.
Fields of Dreams
Also went with CC. I knew Pryor wasn't gonna get it even though he was a hoss.
A hoss for sure
I heard Karsatos talking about that play several years ago in a bar. He said he saw the pressure up the middle and was trying to throw the ball away. I can’t recall his exact words but something to the effect of “ I threw that ball 10 ft high and 10 ft out of bounds as hard as I could. “ I could tell when he told the story he was honestly still amazed by CC
One of my favorite day dreams is T Peezy in Urb's system.
Larry Johnson of PSU fame called Doss the best college player he ever went up against. Respect.
Very interesting to know. Respect for both.
Spielman's great about Doss, too. I like Doss for this choice--he's a complete choice in every respect.
Hockey Men & Women's
My favorite Buckeye of all time, without question! He was a consummate professional, three time All-American, leading tackler every season. Humble beast, run stuffer, ball hawk, effective leader, and an athlete that could actually be a role model for youth, unlike most. WHO? MIKE DOSS!!
Doss!!!!!!! I grew up watching him dominate every sport he played. Football, basketball, baseball, track... He could hit homeruns from both sides of the plate. Best safety to ever play at Ohio State. He was absolutely amazing!
Doss is the guy, no question. 3 time All-American and National Champion! He also won a Super Bowl as well.
3 time All-American... Rarified air right there.
I grew up watching the awesomeness of Cris Carter but the 3x All-American creds push Mr Doss over the top.
56 - 27 = 8 consecutive
Doss was a beast!
O Captain, my Captain!
I collect magazines with Buckeyes on the cover... This is one of my all time favorites!
We went absolutely apeshit when that came in the mail senior year
"How Firm Thy Friendship, O-HI-O"
As you can tell from my Avi, one of mine too.
I think we guessed right, Pope...
I do as well...this is literally the only one I've never been able to find. I even have an SI back from 1955 with Hopalong Cassidy on it.
I'll never forget him announcing that he'd return for his Senior season in order to win the national championship, and most of the nation media finding that notion ridiculous.
"Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed, is more important than any other one thing." - Abraham Lincoln
Awesome part of that cover is the blurb insinuating how good the 'canes were that year. Especially knowing how that season turned out. Also, very prescient talking about OSU, Fiesta Bowl and Miami on the 2nd of Sept.
*Sipping the Buckeye Kool-Aid since 1995
Doss is Boss.
Buckeye legend right here. Best Silver Bullet ever. Go Bucks
I will always remember when he announced he was coming back for his senior year to win a national championship. Man did people scratch their heads on that announcement. If there is ever anyone who deserves to say "I told you so", he is the one!
Some players are so preoccupied with money they won't even play a bowl game. Total r-e-s-p-e-c-t for Mike Doss.
Are you talking about a Damsel in distress?
Doss is one of the all-timers, but the deuce I don't want to drop, will forever be Malcolm Jenkins.
Urban Meyer left an incredible legacy. 12/4/18 Ryan Day begins his.
Dat dude Doss was a baller!
You have to give it to Doss for his work at Ohio St
Doss was a freaking wrecking ball...he had a nose for the ball and was relentless in pursuit....an awesome football player.
"I don't want to be around average, why be around average!" -UFM
I knew this was going to be doss or chris carter, saw someone else already posted carter probably did not get the nod because the agent fiasco. He certainly had the better NFL career (canton). But I agree with the choice.
You win with people
My favorite Defensive player ever.
Hard hitting Mike Doss.
Came back to win a championship - then delivered
now medical device sales rep
just a great example for all buckeyes!
Fitzbuck | Toledo - Ohio's right armpit | "A troll by any other name is still a troll".
That 2002 season was incredible and Doss was a major part of that Championship team.
I'm a huge Doss fan, but Cris Carter? Had to be a close call.
Not only a great football player, but a great human being.
You Got Barbecue Back There!?!?!?!
Doss is the right choice.
"Great moments are born from great opportunities." - Herb Brooks
Man, I really used to love watching Doss play. His jersey was the first one I ever bought. Then I transitioned it into a Pryor jersey when he was a Buckeye.
My first Ohio State jersey was a Michael Doss jersey. Certainly an all-time great.
Ohio State Engineering - Class of 2015
The right call.
I would have thought Chris Carter, but I have no problem with Mike Doss in this spot.
Oh man shame on me. I'm sitting here this morning ready to debate why it should have been either Terrelle Pryor over Malcom Jenkins or vice versa and I totally forgot about Doss. -1 to my Buckeye score today.
Proudly dispensing unbridled arrogance since 1983.
UV to offset that minus one. Happens sometimes.
Clearly one of my favorite all-time Buckeyes considering his ridiculous "promise" that everyone makes, but next to none deliver on. Being born a year after the 1968 National Title and living through heartache after heartache, Championships were never thought to be part of being an OSU fan and graduate. Beating SCum and winning the Bowl Game was the best season could offer. Then someone named Jim Tressel became coach and a player named Mike Doss said he would come back for his Senior season to help win a title. Me and all my buddies laughed and laughed and laughed some more. Then, in 2002 his promise came through, he helped deliver a title and Ohio State Football went from winning two games to always completing for the National Title. Thank you kindly, Mike Doss, Jim Tressel and all you wonderful Buckeyes!
Calling that a "pivotal" interception against Miami is completely accurate. As good a start as we had in that game, Miami at that point had the lead, and we weren't really moving the ball at all. Another score there for the Canes would have made things very problematic. A momentum shift was needed, and Doss provided it, as he did so many times.
Jenkins and Carter were also all-timers, but this is a case where using the national championship as a tie-breaker makes a lot of sense.
The most "loud mouth, disrespect" poster on 11W.
You're hitting me right in the heart with this one. Mike Doss is easily one of my 5 favorite Buckeyes of all-time. I love that guy. I figured it would be Doss or Cris Carter, and thought it would be most likely be the HOFer.
His character, class, hardnosed play, forgoing the millions of dollars he could have been making in 2002 to come back and help OSU win a national championship. I remember hearing him say the thing about the national championship, and scoffing "National championship? Shit, I'm just hoping to do better than 7-5". Well, he and his teammates damn sure delievered! And even going back to 2001, his two big picks in The Game helped usher in this era of domination by OSU in the rivalry.
Class of 2010.
Mike Doss epitomizes what an athlete should be to me. Team before me. Total effort and guts.
Love Doss. His play and class are supreme. But Pryor and Carter were better. And that should end the discussion. End of story.
Doss the Boss was a three time All American. Pryor and Carter were not. Your story doesn’t check out.
If only you knew the POWER of the Dark Side
Pryor and Carter were better. End of story.
Mike Doss embodied the resurgence of Ohio State football on a national scale. Great choice.
"We get paid to score touchdowns, not kick field goals"
-- Urban Meyer
Was privileged to meet Mike Doss 7-8 years ago at one of our basketball games (his nephew was the team’s point guard). I was was impressed by his gracious manner and humility.
"Hit them hard and see how they fall"
Back to Back HS state champions, National Champion and Super Bowl Champion....pretty damn good career.
Doss is one of the few who can claim championships at all levels. I can think of Jerry Lucas and Magic Johnson doing the same in bb. Lucas won titles at Middletown H.S., tOSU, the Olympics and with the NBA NY Knicks.
Favorite Buckeye of all time! The epitome of leadership and the catalyst for a national title run.
"Anything easy ain't worth a damn"
I personally would have gone with Carter here (and, admittedly, his NFL career has a lot to do with that), but I can’t argue with this choice. Mike Doss was a leader on this team from the moment he stepped on campus. There’s no question as to his greatness as a Buckeye.
I told this story before, but it bears retelling now: I once went out to see a movie at the AMC Lennox, and was the only person in the theater who was not an OSU football player. During the movie, Nate Clements got a call on his cell phone, and was annoying the entire room by loudly talking to his friend. Despite multiple players telling him to shut up, Clements didn’t get up to leave until a then-sophomore Mike Doss turned around and shot him an absolute death stare from the front row. Without saying a single word, Doss showed who the leader was on that defense. That’s Mike Doss in a nutshell.
My kid has a #2 jersey. I've always told him that was for Mike Doss. Sums up my feelings.
My aim, then, is to whip the Weasels, to humble their pride, to follow them to their inmost recesses, and make them fear and dread us. Fear is the beginning of wisdom. - William Tecumseh Sherman (with apologies)
Mr. Doss always made me jump up and cheer ! So glad that a stellar player completed his degree.
I remember Mike Doss the hard hitting safety AND Mike Doss the man of faith, Campus Crusader. Love both. #GoBucks
Really surprised at this one. Doss a great player, but Cris Carter was the most outstanding #2 I ever saw in a Buckeye jersey.
He did not have as long or decorated career while he was a Buckeye and CC, while he became one of the best, was not that player in college, he had a lot of growing up to do, Doss was a leader, a great person and one helluva player.
I seen him play in High school. I was the water boy for the opposing team. He was by far the strongest and fastest I've ever seen.
Da juice ain’t worth the squeeze
Small story that further conveys what Doss was all about: I had the great fortune to work for the team for 5 seasons while in school. We had just finished our last Fiesta Bowl practice at the WHAC before a quick, 3-day break for Christmas prior to flying to Tempe on the 26th. So Coach Tressel addresses the team on the indoor field and before breaking it down, Doss asks the players to get down for one last round of pushups... then he yells at the coaches to get set for one last round of pushups... then he asks the managers, trainers, and ANYONE ELSE ON THE FIELD to get down! Everyone on that damn field counted off 20 pushups as loud as they could, everyone on that field broke it down as loud as they could, and everyone on that field knew exactly what would happen on January 3!
Can someone tell me why a three-time All American with great character went so relatively low in the draft?
Coverage skills. Struggled with ball in the air.
Always and forever, Go Bucks!
I have so many favorite buckeyes but Doss is definitely one of the top 5. I started thinking about who jumps into my mind and Chris Spielman, Orlando Pace, Eddie George, stopping here just realized I could go for quite awhile.
Liked this series. What it points out is Ohio State is bigger for the athletes than the NFL. These are the cream of the crop and they average maybe a few years in the NFL. All the great athletes who get a lot from there connection and playing are more than the few who play a few years in the NFL. The college system is win for athletes and fans and of course OSU. Those who say they should paid don’t get it. There is a lot of value in the Osu and other brands that needs to be considered.
It had to be Mike!
had to be...
15-1 is SWEET!
One of the greatest Buckeyes of all time
Sooner or later it all gets real.
The Captain of the best defense I've ever seen play the game of football.
The only good thing about The Game is winning it - Urban Meyer
It is hard to say no to somebody when they are so damn good. But, no. And he can be my safety anytime.
Kurt Kittner agrees.
I picked Cris Carter but Mike Doss is obviously an outstanding choice as well. I was fortunate enough to watch Mike here in Indy play for the Colts and I was so happy for him that he earned a SB ring here.
Man, this is great, reminiscing about Mike Doss and football is almost here, can't wait!
Very simple: if Mike Doss went to the NFL after his jr year, there is no '02 championship!
Bucks fans in Mass
Mike Doss was tremendous at Canton McKinley and then at OSU. The best all around player that I ever saw. He never had a bad game and he was at his best in big games.
MY all time favorite Buckeye. Class act. He finished school and won a championship.
Perfect preparation prevents piss-poor performance.
