Stiff Competition: OSU and Top Offensive Lines in the Country

I'm not too confident right now. A lot of inexperience on paper. However going up against guys like Bosa, Dremont, and Chase Young in practice daily has to be helpful and makes me think you'll see drastic improvements throughout the year

Frankly, I'm not that sanguine either.  But let's see how they gel as a unit. They have a couple cupcake games here to start off.

Athlon sports has us at #11, 247 at #7.

We return 3/5 starters and have 4/5 star depth.

Wisconsin is the best ol line btw 3 all americans on their o line.

ZWD, I used SI, ESPN and Athlon, too.  Athlon must have updated their ranking because they had OSU at #13.

Those 3 AA at Wisconsin (named above) should really open things up (again) for their Heisman hopeful RB.

The Wisconsin O-line hype is funny to me, yeah they all return...and they looked about as good as USCs O-line vs OSU last year.  They are paper tigers.  That said, O-line is my biggest concern for OSU this year...LT is a BIG problem until proven otherwise.

I made a similar list a while ago and had us at #9.

Need to see how they do against Oregon State this weekend.

If they're giving up a lot of pressures to a bottom feeding team, that's a problem for sure.

I'm actually encouraged looking at how they made the switch with Jordan to C because the prevailing wisdom has been that the guys behind Jordan at G were so good they couldn't be kept off the field. It seems like a move that was more to accentuate a positive as opposed to covering up a negative.

Urban Meyer left an incredible legacy. 12/4/18 Ryan Day begins his.

I'm fine with Ohio State's line.

The talent is there, it's going to be whether they find the chemistry to make it all click (yes, I think they do).

I really hope to see a B1G rematch against Wisconsin, that'll be another banger if it happens.

I am not too worried...ok a little. Those teams listed have very good offensive lines but OSU has the talent to be right up there. They just have less experience. It is a critical piece of any offense and it will need to come together as quickly as possible. They will have a good chance to do so against osu and Rutgers before having a test in TCU.

It is very fair to have them not in the top group at the moment, as those seem like more sure things, but OSU should be pretty good in that regard this year and into the future.

Yes, 2999, as stated above, I'm not real sanguine at the start of the season.  But like you said, they have the talent, they just lack experience.  We'll soon see if they learn to play well together as a unit.

There are already monster OL units (Wisc and Bama) where we hope to be when the season ends and the playoffs begin.

good point about the season of 12-15 games - those more 'young' and 'inxperienced' will get 'more' faster than the older experiencings.

Just do the math....   ;-{)}

I just don't get the Wisconsin OL hype.  It's a good line for sure, but OSU destroyed them last year in the B1G championship game, held Taylor to 40 yards.  I think they look good against teams who don't have elite talent, but often fail to deliver in games where they are playing good DLs

Yeah, I think a lot of these stats come from a weak schedule, which Wisconsin has been enjoying for quite some time now, but when they are facing stout defenses, they simply can't put up the same numbers.

Wisconsin usually has a strong offensive line. If they didn't than their lack of team speed would be even more obvious. They are able to dominant the lesser teams but are not an elite team and seem to struggle against them. They played OSU tough for sure, but that has as much to do with OSU miscuse than anything. The game probably should have been near over at the end of the half.

Which is why I think they would not be a great representative for the Big Ten into the playoff. That said, MSU and OSU were both shut out and it is hard to do worse than that. At least OSU won the first one so that is some redemption there.

I don't know, the number of Wisconsin OLinemen in the NFL does seem to indicate they are always pretty elite in that unit.

HS

I agree with that, but they never score at will against OSU in any capacity.

Last 5 games they have scored:

21

23

0

24

14

That's not going to win you games against a good team who can score some points.  They do have good players on the OL, but I just don't think it's the best OL in the country when OSU's DL owned them so badly for an entire game.  Do you think we would have held Bama or UGA to 40 yards rushing from their top guy?

Some how, for the past 15 years the coaching staff have made their players play like National contenders.  I believe this year is no different!

I suspect our 2 deep OL is the most athletic collection of OLs in the Urban Meyer era.  If they play nasty this offensive will be very nasty.

What hurts is this OL will become better in the years to come!

I suspect that Jordan, Prince and Munford are NFL bound if they stay healthy.

I'm not so concerned about OL as I am about the LBs quite frankly.  IMHO this will be a high quality OL group resulting in 2 thousand yard rushers and one of the highest passing yardage teams in the UM era.

You asked for it, you got it.
LBs coming up in a later addition.
