There's a campus debating club named after a man who lost his life in a duel?

The most "loud mouth, disrespect" poster on 11W.

Yes, and it's remarkable. Hamilton, the former Secretary of the Treasury, was shot by the then Vice-President of the United States, Aaron Burr, who was running for governor of New York state. Burr was never charged for his part in the illegal duel.

In front of the United States Treasury, no less.

In front of the United States Treasury

Might want to check your info. Wikipedia & my old OSU history book say the duel was at Weehawken, New Jersey, across the Hudson River from New York.

But Hamilton didn't die until the next day, which may have been in New York.

HS

Huh.

They agreed to Weehawken b/c New Jersey was slightly more tolerant of duels. Still illegal, but state officials weren't as agressive (compared to New York) about enforcing their prohibition on duels

Agree with you Go1Bucks.  This does not belong here!!!

HS

Well...it discusses student engagement/activity opportunities and not policy or politics...and isn't a comment, so...

New Day for OSU. Same noon for TTUN.

So Foriegn Policy isn’t about politics!  Nice try.

3rd paragraph, foriegn policy is all about political opinion.

HS

Yeah highlights that some current OSU students debate about foreign policy. That's it

OK . . . Federalism.

I read the piece too fast, and I was wrong. Federalism did not appear anywhere but in my comment.

Apologies.

This has been a regular feature on this site, usually a profile of some aspect of student life. There is no mention of anything political within this story.

They're all chickens. The rooster has sex with all of them.

HS

It's an OSU website. We like knowing about things happening at the university and in Ohio.

HS
Buck 1961's picture

The 3rd paragraph describes foriegn policy not about the happenings in Ohio.

HS

Maybe you'd be less triggered if you pretended that they discussed the Athletic Department's foreign policy of sending the OSU basketball team to Spain?

The club advisor (Dr. Mansoor) is awesome. Absolute wealth of knowledge and has been on national news to discuss current events.

I think we’ve found out in a round about way that politics are being presented here recently. Be very careful.

That’s a response to Go1, but not directed at him but who he is looking at on here, possibly. Just what I’ve perseved as certain individuals, not eyeballing writers here.

Or it could always be trolls. Which are downvote princesses.

There used to be a time when media outlets had respect. And they respected the information they passed along. Unfortunately, I’ve lost respect in the new media.

Could it be social? Sad that I’m a part of it. Wrong that I don’t voice my 11w points. Which I have in a violating way.

Buck, not actually sure how to take your response, but I laughed. So, I upvoted you for that. I do apologize for becoming so antagonistic lately.

No worries. Just imagine if this guy moderated the debates with heckling responses to the debaters. Comedy is a two edge sword. No need to apologize to anyone especially me. Saturday is one day and a wake up away. Go Bucks, pound them Beavers!

Folks are getting cranky waiting for football to start!  If you don't like it, don't read it.  I'm sure 11W's metrics will sort it all out.

Personally, I am interested in all things Ohio State.  IMO things like this club are one of the great things about attending a huge school like Ohio State.  There are so many opportunities to explore, to try new things, meet people from all over the world, learn about something that you didn't know existed.  Maybe attending a lecture/discussion at this club will get a student thinking about America's place in the world and make him/her a better citizen.  A kid that comes out of college exactly the same as he went in, did it wrong.

My aim, then, is to whip the Weasels, to humble their pride, to follow them to their inmost recesses, and make them fear and dread us. Fear is the beginning of wisdom.   - William Tecumseh Sherman (with apologies)

People need to chill out. They're highlighting overlooked clubs and areas. Just because this club talks about foreign policy, doesn't mean they should be banned from the fucking site. The point is that they're a top level program within the university that does not get enough recognition, not that they talk about foreign policy from time to time.

You gotta remember that most, if not most then at least a good chunk, of Ohio State fans are not alumni/current students. All they care about is football and basketball and they don't understand how incredible Ohio State is as an educational institution. Hopefully more stories like this will make them realize how vast, diverse, and fuckin' awesome Ohio State is not only in athletics, but as a school!

Football is, after all, a wonderful way to get rid of your aggressions without going to jail for it.

After stepping back from this awhile, perhaps I Overthought and made too much out of this.  My sincere apologies.  Go Bucks!!!

Not necessarily. Im aware of the organization. I went to school here. But I am tired of politics, especially on a site I used to be able to come to escape the crap around us. Alas, There is no escape... as if there werent 35 other sports to talk about...
And thats why Ive been cranky lately.

I graduated in 2016 and the events put on by the Alexander Hamilton Society were without a doubt someone of the highlights of my under graduate experience.  The speakers they brought in were always top class and they were always very enlightening.  I still try to make time for their events when I am able to.

Any student organization that allows for a better understanding and more in-depth discussion of foreign policy is a good thing. Hopefully a variety of views are being listened to and discussed, because foreign policy is driven by political philosophy. Wondering if there is also a Jefferson Society at OSU as well since Hamilton and Jefferson were so famously at odds over key things in the development of the young USA, such as the role, size, and scope of the federal government versus the states. Issues being sorted out to this day.

HS

As a pro-Jefferson/anti-Hamilton guy, I wondered the same thing, but you said it more eloquently.
