Four-Star Linebacker Kane Patterson Decommits From Ohio State

PhillyNut's picture

The challenge for the next several months is going to be convincing commits and recruits that Meyer will be here next year. Many in the national media and that POS McButt are predicting he won't be which other coaching staffs are going to be using constantly against Ohio State. Face it, short term Meyer is the brand, most of these kids think of him first as being who they will play for. It's not until you have gone through the program that you realize the brand is the school and that is who they played for.

I don't buy one goddam drop of gas in the state of Michigan!

Drake bought into the accusations and lead the charge to hammer URBAN.

HS
grantlandR's picture

I believe that Urban Meyer truly loves Ohio State, and does what he believes is his very best to do his part for this great institution, but he made serious errors in judgement regarding Zach Smith that ultimately hurt the university. I, for one, am glad we have a president that will hold staff accountable. We all make mistakes, despite our good intentions, and that can be a hard pill to swallow, but it's not the end of the road. One measure of Urban Meyer's character will be how he examines these recent events, and responds to serve Ohio State even better than before.

HS
Davebuck187's picture

I strangely agree with you. I despise Drake and will be happy when he is gone no doubt. Maybe Urban needed a wake up call. Punishment for keeping Zack around after all those red flags. Embarrassing the University and fan base. It's just 3 games. Could be a lot worse. I'm still going after the media reguardless.

HS

Sweeping generalization, but understand your point. Whether five star or three star, staff brings them in for a reason. Good thing is, our reactions mean nothing and contribute nothing, except for some type of selfish gratification.

Main thing is, staff knows, trust them, don’t knock someone as being a “lesser talent” when we have NEVER seriously evaluated these teens.

Not a good look for the advisors that surround Patterson.

I can't blame the kid - he has a much narrower perspective re: the relationship between college programs and sports media and hasn't been around to experience "the cycle" that reveals the truth of what's happening here in regard to that.

But the advisors - it's different. They should know better. And to then teach a kid to cut-and-run at the first sign of adversity is just a horrible lesson. In the future, after the dust has settled, and the kid matures, and has observed "the cycle", he's going to question the advice he's been given, and the decision he made.

Doesn't mean he will necessarily regret it, but he'll learn wisdom, and understand there was an option to live the conviction of his deliberations in choosing OSU in the first place, and that it's the strength of the family and how they come together and react that is what most matters. Not the outside pressures and perceptions of the moment.

No matter where he chooses to go next, he's going to find that if human beings are staffing the school and program he's in, they're going to demonstrate their fallibility. The only difference he'll observe is that the spotlight is simply going to be much harsher and the media far more aggressive at a place like OSU, ND, OK, FSU, TX or similar (SEC excepted simply because ESPN won't attack its own like that).

His advisors owe him better than he's receiving in guidance right now.

HS
Etenim's picture

Maybe he's a Christian who decided I don't want to play for a man like this

I don't know what you mean by "man like this", and what you think Patterson learned about Meyer during this saga, but re: my point about fallibility, Patterson will find that too at his next destination - even if he were to enroll in seminary to play flag football there.

Again, I'm not faulting the kid, he simply can't fully know what his advisors certainly should know. I'm not attempting to get into the kid's mind the way you are, as that tells us nothing since we really don't know. But It's easy to determine by the facts we do know that there was better advice Patterson could've been provided than to cut-and-run at the first sign of adversity.

Meyer erred in keeping Smith around for as long as he did - because bad news followed the guy - for reasons of loyalty to his mentor.  My understanding is that Christianity isn't about bailing out on someone because they're less than they should be. You try to help, while also holding them accountable. Any Christian can understand that. Meyer did that - but for too long. If this is the worst Patterson witnesses in a coach for the rest of his career in athletics, it'll be a rare level of fortunate that few in that realm can claim to have reached.

HS

Maybe him or his advisors read the report.. do the same, if it doesn't change your tone, get help

Agreed. Unless it’s a 5 star from Ohio, I don’t get too excited if/when they don’t come to OSU. This kid looks like a good prospect, but a top 200 is replaceable.  Having said that, the staff proved with NPF that even the instate misses aren’t always that big of a deal anyway.

HS

Bb- give me some names of equal or greater talent that are even prospects for us right now?

HS

I understand your point, but your comments are being framed under the assumption that this kid was the greatest thing since sliced bread, and that Ohio State has never produced a first round draft pick linebacker out of a three star recruit. We lost four last year, three in December, two (Jones and Woodbey) during the early signing period. If a kid doesn’t want to be a Buckeye, I’d rather it happen now than in December or January.

Good luck to him but if Birm’s intel is correct, I’ll laugh if he picks a school that’s farther away from Nashville than Columbus (380 miles) or about as far (Clemson is 360). College Station is literally 2x as far (760 miles).

We have a bunch of kids that are 760 miles from home. What is the point?

HS
iowabuckeyes's picture

I would have thought that's pretty obvious so forgive me if I don't understand your question. It's not about the guys we have who live that far away, it would be that Patterson's family supposedly wants him to play closer to home but College Station is twice as far from Nashville as Columbus. That's my point. What was yours?

Dude we're one of the greatest programs in the history of college football.  We were 50 years ago, we were 20 years ago, and we're in the midst of one of our greatest eras (if not the greatest) currently.  If someone is going to let the "15 minutes" of media backlash against Ohio State change their mind than they likely were never going to stick with us anyway.  And yes we will get another 4* to replace him because Urban always does and nothing has changed in that regard.

HS
Mastro16's picture

And yes we will get another 4* to replace him because Urban always does and nothing has changed in that regard

Not saying he can't, just saying that given he recently got suspended for something that - true or not - could easily be controversial and a deterrent to high-end recruits who have comparable scholarship offers, there's no guarantee Patterson will get replaced by a player who is supposed to be as good or better

"On to the next one" is good, "on to the next 4-star" is not a given, at least in this class

HS
LB U's picture

The faster football starts the better. Once the season starts, things will ease up a little bit.. The kids will watch the games, and that will suddenly be more of the focus. I honestly believe this will just be a bump in the road in this class, as long as the team takes care of business on the field.

HS
Mastro16's picture

I agree, but it looks like there aren’t really any high-end linebackers available, which means to get one you have to flip one.

I thought it was fair to say it’s easier to flip a player to your school if you didn’t just go through an unfortunately public scandal, but it appears I’m wrong about that

Zone:  I have to admit, I am watching Zach Harrison carefully. He has been very clear that he sees OSU and UM as being very similar. Could the negatives from the ZS firing and UM suspension sway him at all? Of course, as a Michigan fan, I'd be delighted. And that would be a much more significant loss to OSU than a 4 star LB.

HS

Urban made a mistake in hanging on to Z.S. and he clearly knows that.

Every step in this life, everyone experiences successes and failures. It is from the failures that we learn the most about ourselves(hopefully). Urban and Ohio State will come out of this stronger than ever, whatever school Harrison commits to.

I agree that Stover is a more coveted recruit. I liked Patterson's tape, though, and we've done very well with Werner so far. Eh. As they say all a verbal commitment means is you’re in their top 3. When this recruiting class is all said and done I think we’ll be just fine.

Best wishes to Kane Patterson.  If being closer to home is best for him/his family then so be it.  I'm glad it happened now rather than later and am sure another LB will be added to our liking.  Go Bucks!

So how many do we lose from this class? This negative press and good ol boy Meyer is really working!

You're assuming that's the reason.  We had decommits before the negative press, what was the reason then?

HS
letsgobucks's picture

I cant say i blame him. We dont exactly have the best reputation at the moment and this kid hasnt signed with anyone at this point. I wish the kid the best of luck and hopefully this is the last decommitment we see from the dramatics of the last 3 weeks. But lets not point fingers at the kid. He didnt wait til the last second and its not like he doesnt have a reason...

HS
Extramedium's picture

Please stop assuming this is the reason.  He's not the first decommit this season and won't be the last.  It happens all the time.

HS
letsgobucks's picture

Please stop asking me to play dumb. You can play alone.. It happens all the time but THIS decommit is absolutely because of recent events.

Can't say I blame the kid. It's not been an easy few weeks for anyone who attaches their name to OSU lately. I wish him luck, but we'll be here when this blows over, and I promise you everything will be fine.

I liked Patterson a lot but don't think losing him is that 'Big' of a loss. I definately like Mitchell and Gant more and probably Pope from '18.  I think they are all bigger and faster if I'm not mistaken.  I wouldn't mind grabbing another Ohio kid or 2 and letting them develop.  Not worried.

I’ll never fault a young man for going somewhere they they think is best for them. It does irritate me when kids commit and then backout. I’d rather have a 3 Star kid that wants to be a buckeye and will do whatever it takes rather than a 4 or 5 star who operates likes a mercenary for hire. Good luck to the young man.

HS

There will be others if I had to guess.

IIRC there were at least (3) late in the season last year. Go 12-0 and beat Wisky in the B1G championship and "we'll" be fine. Conversely don't lose 55-24 to Iowa. Funny how winning is a cure-all elixir ...

Wrong. There can still be communication just not campus visits . Urban can’t while under suspension.

Who's to say the kid may not have decommited even if this whole cluster f didn't happen?  Kid decommit all the time.  I love watching CFB and support the bucks through thick and thin but refuse to worry about what 17 year olds decide.  If the bucks do well this season and continue to send talent to the NFL, recruiting will be fine.

As someone who lives several states away from C-bus and sees what the general impression is of OSU right now in places where there isn’t anything to balance the garbage from ESPN, I am kind of impressed that more haven’t de-committed.  The misinformation I encounter is bizarre.  And these kids are hearing everywhere that we are toxic.  So sick of this garbage.

Negative talk about why  or why not choose to decommit  will not help the Urban or the Staff in trying to get this kid back later. If he wants to go else where let him go and wish him luck and move on to the man up. It very well could be his mother was behind it which we do not know so give Urban and the staff some time to work with the family.

Let's just stay positive and understand we all knew this was going to happen. Negative recruiting was bound to happen. Not to mention, this was self inflicted. So is it really negative recruiting? I'm not entirely sure about that...

It is time!!!!!

HS

Yawn. Nothing has changed. The Bucks will simply do what they have been doing since whenever. And that is replace him. I recall that some of the media early on were saying the LB position was the weakest it has been for years coming out of HS, and that DE was second.  They attribute it too so many HS coaches using players on both sides of the ball so they don’t get enough reps at a single position. Just have to wait and see.

Bye Felicia! Look, Clemson had their 15 minutes only because of Watson, a generational talent. They exposed themselves last year and *may* make the playoffs again but will not make it past the first round.

HS

It's interesting...

Normally, when a recruit we really want commits to another place, or someone transfers, this board is filled with "good luck young man!" type of posts wishing him well.

But in this case the board is filled with "buh bye now", "whatever, I don't remember this kid at all", and other negatively worded comments. If anything this kid had a better reason to leave, if not just as good of one. Don't hate a kid for decommitting when our head coach was just exposed for making numerous bad decisions and proceeded to, not one but twice, issue "apologies" that are so robotic and insincere it'd take only the blindest fan to believe them.

I know I'll probably get DV'd a lot for this take, but don't wish a kid ill when he "leaves" now vs. every other time when this board is filled with positivity for those leaving.

To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift.

HS
BuckeyeNTexas's picture

Best of luck on the kid finding a college that suits him. Nothing in this article confirms that this is fallout! No quotes from the recruit stating why, only that he is de-committing. It is not like decommitment never happens, unfortunately now and into the future, every possible recruit that doesn’t commit or decommits to/from OSU will be fallout! Please fill your stories with relevant facts not speculation, and then we can track fallout together.
