For those of you unaware, Qanon is a personality or personalities claiming to have inside knowledge of a pedophilia and sex trafficking ring within Washington, Hollywood, and other elite circles.

Originally it seemed like it was one person claiming to be within the NSA who was privy to tens of thousands of sealed indictments against all of the elites, spearheaded by the current President.

Anyway, it’s become a thing in a certain segment of Twitter.

Qanon and its copycats write like this: vague, unverifiable statements that intimate they are insiders into something, when they’re in all likelihood grifters, LARPers, or just nutjobs. You will find people like this writing like this around any complicated national issue that lends itself to rumor-mongering e.g. Russian and Chinese espionage, secret defense projects, etc.

in other words, if these people didn’t have Twitter, they’d have a mimeographed newsletter.

i think this guy is doing a pitch-perfect impression of these guys. It’s actually pretty funny IF you had all of the aforementioned knowledge. But to get the joke, you’d need to be on Twitter WAY more than most of you likely are, because you’re normal people and I’m a weirdo.

Not a conspiracy, but there is a bias in favor of SEC and to a lesser extent, the ACC. It’s not the suits in Bristol, CT or their bosses in the Disney Studios. It’s another result of access journalism. Look at it this way. You are Taylor Zarzour or Greg McElroy or Andy Staples or Mark Packer (who it should be told has been impressively fair during this ZS/CS madness) or Finebaum etc etc. You are on the SEC Network or ACC Network. Your job is to talk, pontificate, interview coaches and interview other “experts” aka other journalists. These coaches and other “experts” are predominantly from the schools comprising the teams of the conferences your network covers. You rely on them for insights and information with which you can talk. In other words, your career depends on your access to their information. And in return, you provide them access to the public, recruits etc. For some, you played for these teams and coaches and covet the access to insights and information that you can provide.

Now let’s get this clear. No one cares about Big 12, PAC 12 or Notre Dame. They do care about the Big Ten because that’s the competition, not only on the field or court but also in the boardroom (I.e. Fox). But they do have to spend some time covering the Big Ten and which school is the big cahoona (sp?) in the Big Ten? It’s very easy for these “journalists” to criticize, target, belittle an Ohio State, but never a Bama, UGA or Clemson. They will go to town about Baker Mayfield getting arrested in Little Rock, but Bama players getting arrested with weed and guns in Louisiana? Crickets. Another UGA player kicked out of school for sexual assault, it’s a footnote. An OSU coach getting fired, Urban lied. Don’t want to risk that access to the Bama or UGA staff but who cares about access to OU or OSU. That’s not in my job description.

So call it a subtle bias in favor of one’s career or people or both.

ESPN - conspiracy? No. Bullies in the schoolyard, the cool kids? Maybe. Stuck in journalism group think defending one of their own Brett McMurphy and a certain level self-righteousness? Probably. Love to see those at the top fall? Absolutely.

Espn is much like the other media outlets. They have a set agenda but I wouldn't call it a conspiracy. As a reference only, I would bring up CNN vs Fox. Cnn should just go ahead and announce themselves as a democratic outlet and Fox should do the same for on the Republican side. We all know it but they tend to want to suggest they are both fair and impartial (LOL), They aren't. One of ESPNs cash cows is the SEC network. if you go back 5-8 years on XM radio the talk shows are all about the SEC and throw in a little non-SEC to keep one thinking they are not biased towards one conference. I suggest they have marching orders from ESPM leadership/Disney to focus on their cash cow constituents (SEC), Not sure anyone not named Paul Finebaum gets the same gig for other non-SEC conference discussions. His show gets soo many SEC fans calling mostly talking stupid shit but they call regularly. THat sells advertisers.

Much like the CNN/Fox debate, ESPN is always going to defend their base.

One thing I do believe, no matter the outcome of the UFM investigation there will be lots of huffing and puffing on that network. If he is not fired or just suspended the ESPN team will want to argue that OSU is only interested in money by keeping an enabler of domestic violence. They are too lazy to see both sides of the argument and have their opinion set on McMurphy's report (their pal). It will also help incite the SEC fan base to keep calling in and saying how sad it is that OSU is keeping someone who supports domestic violence. If however, OSU fires UFM (we will see if they have a backbone and keep him now that more details have come out), then the Buckeye football team is ranked too high with an unproven coach and OSU did the right thing based solely on McMurphy's overinflated/slanted report that he has changed like 5 times. Then when UFM sues OSU for $40 million dollars they will continue to trash OSU and it will stay in the news for as long as the lawsuit is out there.

OSU better get this right both for its base but also for the perception it has a DV enabler on its staff. Their approach better have good judgement and detail behind to shut down the continuous negative publicity it will get if they leave a shadow of the doubt regardless which way it goes.

For me, it is not a conspiracy. And for me, my hope is OSU sues the shit out of McMurphy for the amount of money they have invested into the investigation with hopes of shutting down poor shoddy journalism which caused such a significant impact on the university.

Agreed to an extent. CNN plays the role of the "independent". I think those are their marching orders. So right now during the Trump administration they seem like liberal media biased. But during the Obama era they were also pretty tough. Which I think is a massive flaw with how CNN works, journalism is about telling the truth and reporting facts not about being fair or balanced.

HS
OSU_JD's picture

All right kids buckle up because it is about to get *wild*

Turns out OhioStateSmitty wasn't *entirely* the crank we all thought he was.

Once upon a time, Smitty's tweets were normal OSU fandom stuff. Then, researching his timeline, something in the fall of 2015 changed him from normie OSU fan to bitter bear about the athletic program. What other relevant incident(s) happened in the fall of 2015? Well, from what it appears, one Courtney Smith went apoplectic over Zach Smith cheating on her.

Smitty, in his timeline, was furious over something having to do with his ex-wife, claiming his ex-wife (and he, somehow) had been discriminated against by the University. Smitty further claimed Urban Meyer's attorneys interfered in Courtney Smith's divorce! Finally, Smitty claimed he and his ex-wife were interviewed by the Committee.

Now, unless Smitty is a total crank, only one theory makes sense: Zach was cheating with Smitty's (now ex-) wife.

This explains a lot.

I wondered why it was Zach thought Powell Police contacted Gene directly. My guess is Powell Police wanted to talk to Zach and Courtney told them he was basically living in his office (close to his other woman, of course). Powell Police make a courtesy call to OSU Police to go round up Zach and ask him to come in. OSU Police go to Gene. Gene calls Zach.

*Something* certainly happened that made Zach Smith receive negative comments in his personnel reports for that year *and* cause him to make only a cost-of-living raise for that year.

The woman either voluntarily left the Athletic Department (indeed, the entire University), or was let go, in the first calendar quarter of 2016.

The best part? We get to add one, if not two, more Smiths to the mix of this drama.

HS
tracyre's picture

Damn dude. You are thorough. IT's a really interesting premise.

HS
OSU_JD's picture

Smitty says the Athletic Department did his ex-wife wrong and they should not have been able to do that based on her "15 years of service"

Here's Smitty talking about his wife, Shannon.

Here's a Shannon Smith who was fired from the Athletic Department in 2016. The first image is her bio from ohiostatebuckeyes.com. Notice she started in 1999, giving her roughly 15 years of service, and that she is an alum. The second is her salary history from OSU. Note it abruptly ends in 2016.

Finally, here's Ryan defending his new bestie Courtney on social media and letting Zach's (alleged) family members know he and "Court" both know Zach is scum:

HS
OSU_JD's picture

I wonder if this was an ongoing thing. Remember that Courtney Smith's bruise photos and the can photo are from November 2014 and September 2014? Apparently the OTHER set of Smiths were having problems right around then too. This is their interaction on instagram (she's scarlettsmitty and he's AtValueRE):

I almost think it had to have been.

HS

HS
OSU_JD's picture

Drake - that’s her. Same person. Likely the reasons she’s not at OSU anymore.

Signor - I agree entirely. It’s the most concerning part of this. They did a lateral transfer to a less prestigious section of the AD. But that implicates Gene too.

HS
Elks' comb over's picture

I think on the surface it could look bad just moving her elsewhere but there wasn’t really a place to move her up I suppose. If they had moved Zach instead that would have drawn red flags for people to look into since he was in a high profile position. I imagine they looked at it and decided for both parties to not lose their jobs it was best for Shannon to move elsewhere and reprimand Zach in other ways like pay. It kept the matter a private one for all parties.

Otherwise if they moved Zach, people would wonder why and look into it. Then Zach and Shannon both could have been out of jobs. I think Ohio State was looking out and trying to help both of them. I’ve seen similar happen in my workplace.

HS
Signor Ferrari's picture

This sounds potentially bad though. NOT AT ALL saying this is what happened, but your timeline seems to imply Zach was sleeping with a co-worker lower on the totem pole than himself and she gets let go/treated unfairly and he gets a small raise. That's not a good look.

HS
goodlifesean's picture

My only concern would be if this incident was a firable offense. Because that could be bad if that is brought up. I don't doubt this guy, though he seems to have lost his damn mind.

Do you have proof of this other than the nut job's tweets? Jeremiah claims this was not the case:

HS
RBloodworth's picture

OK, if that’s true, then my agita has decreased a little bit. That said, if Shannon Smith was reassigned out of the football offices for what appears to have been an affair with Zach Smith, it leads me to believe that higher-ups were very aware of the 5-alarm dumpster fire that Zach’s personal life had become. There appears to have been ample cause to have gotten rid of this guy several years ago, and yet they kept him on until he made the evening news. That’s troubling.

HS

Oh, man. This could be bad. Real bad. Obviously, Ryan Smith sounds like a whack job if you’re to read his Twitter feed, but, if Zach Smith was having an affair with his AD staffer ex-wife, and she was let go because of said affair, that means that the higher ups on campus knew a hell of a lot more about what was going on in the marriage between Zach and Courtney Smith than anyone has let on so far. Ignorance is no longer going to be a plausible excuse.

HS
RBloodworth's picture

If nothing else, this is strong evidence to suggest that Urban and Gene had AMPLE cause to fire Zach years ago (whether or not he’s a wife-beater, a guy who is having an affair with a subordinate co-worker on the job is a fucking dirtbag, plain and simple) and didn’t, for whatever reason. The fact that Shannon Smith appears to have lost her job over this situation and Zach Smith didn’t is NOT going to be helpful in the court of public opinion, if nothing else. I guess it’s good that the committee apparently already knows about this, so they’re prepared if it gets out, but it’s certainly made me a lot more pessimistic about the prospects of Urban keeping his job.

HS
BuckeyeJay's picture

He has a lot of posts about her "Narc abuse" in 2015 and 2016. It's possible she was fired for drug use or a conviction for it. He says "arrested again for your narc use".

It's also possible they were found out and told that one of them needed to quit to continue the affair.

HS
tbdbitlbuck's picture

Guys even if this guy was for real, there’s a 98% chance that when talking to investigators, he started talking about children being kept in pizza restaurants basement and the committee goes “I think we’re done here”.

I think a LOT of people are taking a clearly unstable QAnon person at their word after spending the entire time being super skeptical of literally everyone else

HS
RBloodworth's picture

Oh, he’s a certifiable nut job. No doubt there. Regardless, what concerns me is the fact that his ex-wife’s 15-year career inside the OSU AD abruptly ended shortly after the time that both her and Zach Smith’s marriages collapsed and this guy started attacking Zach on Twitter. It doesn’t take too much of a mental leap to connect the dots there as to what was happening. If this (alleged) affair was happening on campus, and the fallout started interfering in the work environment, people definitely knew that Zach’s personal life was a complete train wreck. Any plea of ignorance there would be a lie. More concerning to me: the fact that Shannon Smith is no longer working at OSU (and is apparently unhappy about it) and Zach Smith was allowed to keep his job for another 2 years is just not going to play well with the public. It has the appearance of nepotism at best, and a cover-up at worst.

HS
tbdbitlbuck's picture

I think you have a guy who is clearly susceptible to conspiracy theory making claims without any proof or evidence that his ex-wife was “done wrong” by the Athletic Department.

Everything else is pure speculation. No one knows what happen with her departure. No one knows what it may have been tied to if it was an involuntary separation. No one knows if there’s any ties at all to Zach Smith. No one knows if this person met with the committee.

This is EXACTLY the tactic of QAnon people. To make unverifiable claims that people buy into and run with it. We’re basically doing more for this guy’s claim than he EVER was going to achieve by himself.

HS
OSU_JD's picture

not this one. He was tweeting hate at Zach and Urban since 2015. I don't see a random nutcase here; something made this guy home in on Zach.

HS
tbdbitlbuck's picture

I understand that, and I even understand the logic in your posts above, but again, this is some guy, who has a propensity to fall into wide ranging conspiracy theories, talking on Twitter.

What I’m saying is maybe treat QAnon Twitter Man’s words as skeptically as we have been other, slightly more credible people in this saga.

This guy sounds like a total crackpot. Even if half the stuff he's saying is true, he's so crazy nobody will take him seriously.

HS
RBloodworth's picture

Well, Brett McMurphy is apparently taking him seriously. If we’ve learned nothing else in this whole mess, that’s going to be enough to cause us a world of problems.

Bottom line: if what this guy is saying is true about his ex-wife being unfairly terminated when Zach Smith was not (for what has all the appearance of being the same reason), that is example #999,999,999 of OSU and/or Urban going out of their way to make excuses for Zach when just about anyone else would have been fired. Like it or not, that gives support to McMurphy’s narrative that Urban covered up domestic violence. If he was willing to go to such extreme lengths for this guy in other cases, is the most damning allegation really that much of a stretch?

HS
MichiBuck12's picture

Except that nobody is really taking McMurphy seriously anymore either. If he was legit ESPN and every other sports related TV and Radio network would be having him on every single day to talk about this stuff. His methods and lack of journalistic integrity has been exposed. Even if some of what he reported is true, he released a bombshell story with only one source, stealth edited that story half a dozen times, and has been proven to have gotten quite a few details totally wrong because he didn't verify anything. Thats why hes begging a conspiracy theorist on twitter to give him info. He's grasping at straws because the story he thought would be his big break is turning out to be anything but.

HS
I'm Ron Burgundy's picture

Nobody is taking him seriously that is an OSU fan. The rest of the world thinks he is a crusader for the truth and nothing but truth bringing down big bad Urban Meyer and OSU. They will absolutely believe anything he puts out.

OSU_JD did some really good digging on this one. It is very plausible and checks out. Without knowing more, a secretary getting fired for less than fair reasons would seem to fall more on Gene Smith than Urban, but this is not a good development any way you slice it.

HS

HS

I didn't say that, but whatever. This site these days, my goodness.

My 2 main points in the post were 1) McMurphy is still very credible to the outside world and 2) This new layer to the situation is not a good development, whatever it may be. There is definitely smoke there that this crackpot is at least somewhat involved in this situation, which again is not good.

HS
MichiBuck12's picture

Not even the most ridiculous Michigan fans are taking McMurphy seriously anymore. Every one of them I talk to up here thinks Urban is a scumbag but none of them cite McMurphy when asked why they think that. And You'll notice the talking heads that are still going on about this thing rarely mention him, let alone bring him on the air. Finebaum and the other idiots have adopted their own narratives surrounding this thing but none of them are using McMurphy anymore.

I don't know how much of this is true, but it was always the possibility of other s**t related to ZS that had me concerned, and why the issue (and the investigation) was never going to be as simple as whether Meyer reported the alleged abuse in 2015, as so many people here kept posting.

I agree with this, and am sorry if my above post that said "if she was fired for less than fair reasons" got everybody's panties in a bunch. I am not assuming that is why she was let go, but once again, if it is not plainly clear to everyone now I don't know how else to help you - perception and reality are two different things. If McMurphy does his thing and talks to this nutjob, he will eat it all up and put it out there and the masses will eat it all up as well. Will it be a shocking bombshell of the truth? Doubtful, but the idiot masses will believe it to be so.

Since we are talking conspiracy theories and assumptions what about if:

1. McButt Hurt is reaching out to this guy because he has run out of text/information to play the "gotcha" games. This pairs well with something JD posted in another thread with Vegas taking the line out of how many games or if Urban would be suspended. McButt knows Urbz is about to be re-instated and since this has become very personal to him, he needs a rebuttal as soon as that information drops.

2. What if the "Shelly" texts were actually to Michelle Herman? Knowing the full situation of Zach's office affair, she had her discussion with Michelle and changed the contact name to "Shelly" to screenshot it.

3. The office affair and keeping Zach on staff explain more so why she has it out for Urban as well. He knew and didn't stand by her side, in her mind, this has happened twice, so he is now a prime candidate for her revenge?

BTW JD, you need your own thread homie, easily have become one of my favorite posters to follow during this time. Props man.

I appreciate that!

What kills me is how easy (assuming I'm right, of course) this stuff is to find, and people who get paid big bucks to be professional journalists don't even bother to poke around. Everything I have found so far was through knowing where to look in court records (which are public), reading forums and simply asking questions.

The more this develops, the more it is clear to me our Media are almost criminally lazy and McMurphy in particular has zero professional ethics. For example, he reported on the October 2015 incident, and put the pictures in the article, knowing people would (wrongly) infer the injuries depicted are from the 2015 incident. Even though he knew they weren't: his current employer (Stadium) put 2014 dates on them.

One other key is to look at details. For one, detailed recollections, like the ones Lynne Bruce and Tina Carano gave, tend to be legit. Overly detailed stories tend to be lies, but from the beginning, Courtney's story was simply completely lacking in details: when were the injuries inflicted? Why are your allegations still considered unfounded? Who specifically knew what? Saying "everyone knew...they all knew" sounds like a total exaggeration.

Last thing, since I am on my soapbox, is, in the absence of true, complete mental breakdowns like schizophrenia or psychosis, everyone has a reason for everything they do, and it's usually more benign than not. It was simply incredible (as in, not credible) to me that Urban Meyer would knowingly harbor a domestic abuser. It was incredible to me that a man who has a reputation for honesty suddenly just decided to "lie" on Big Ten media days. That's a tip something deeper is going on.

The in-office romance would explain why the Rumor Mill said Courtney was banned from WHAC: I am speculating she got into the drink and went flying over there to confront Shannon and Zach, probably more than once.

HS
BuckeyeJay's picture

HS
Buckeyeincleveburg's picture

I rewatched the CS interview the other day and I noticed a couple of things

- it felt scripted and many of the questions were leading

- they closed on two things: Urban Meyer knew and turned his head, and an institution has a higher duty to protect people

I suspect that narrative was crafted by her attorneys in advance. McMurphy ran with it and the mainstream media did too. And here we are.

This is a problem for OSU and everyone involved.

ZS had a very bad 2015 -- and literally everyone knew. The confusion is over what is fireable/legal vs what is moral/ethical.

HS
TXNut2488's picture

This is craziness, and JD did a great job with this theory, makes a lot of sense. However, I don't think this is a big thing in regards to Urban and his suspension. An affair, in the grand scheme of things, is nothing in this scenario. So what? Yes, ZS is a terrible human being, we all know that. But I'd assume Shannon quit her job because she got reassigned (or as others have said, drug issues). I'd like to give the people in charge a little bit more credit than to think they "fired" her for being in an affair. Just seems too obvious of an error to make.

HS
RBloodworth's picture

If said affair, though, led to an uncomfortable work environment (which is very possible, given the volatile nature of the 2 aggrieved spouses in this situation), I could see management stepping in and removing one if not both of the parties from the scene. From the evidence above, Shannon Smith was reassigned from football to a position involving low-profile sports. I could see her feeling that she was being scapegoated for the entire situation, leading to her quitting in 2016.

HS
TXNut2488's picture

That's my thought. She wasn't happy to NOT be with football anymore so she quit. Which I'm sure they can try to twist to make it sound like she was "forced" out, but I don't know how that would hold up.

Considering the number of coaches who have affairs in the college football world (or if your ol Jimbo Fisher, your wife cheating on you with a Gator haha), I just don't think this is something to worry about for Urban's reinstatement. I know wrongs don't make other wrongs right (confusing), but just don't see this being anything.

LOL the more you dig on this, the more messed up everyone involved turns out to be (Zach, Courtney, Shannon, Ryan, the Hermans, etc.). A suggestion: Next time use real world terms such as strategic management, business strategy, marketing warfare, psychological warfare, strategic planning, competitive advantage, SWOT analysis, corporate strategy and portfolio theory, think tanks, etc. These are essentially concepts and tools that actually help people in business to conspire in a less cynical manner.

OSU doesn't need conspiracy theories floating around on its message boards now.

I think about that early Bucknuts post a lot, and I know the picture issue kind of debunks it (except I have never seen a reported date for the photo with the bruise, where she has blonde hair), but I am starting to think a lot of the stuff in that post was true.

I have never seen a more obviously disinterested police report than the October 2015 one. There are no details in it, and you can almost feel the contempt and eye-rolling written in it. She was definitely a known entity to the Powell PD.

Zach's criminal trespass hearing is Wednesday. I speculate it will be very short, but if the Prosecutor wants to press the issue, Koffel may want to get some of the craziness on the record. I am strongly considering going.
