Insurance. If Haskins leaves after this year, we would have Martell, Baldwin, and Mathis. Not much experience, nor depth.
To me, this is purely preparing for the potential of Haskins heading to the NFL. He'll likely never start a game, but may provide a better last resort option than Mathis in 2019.
Elliott dots the eye, on this national championship win.
Ok, but with the new redshirt rules we should be able to get some of the young guys some experience this season.

True but Martell is a B. Miller type, and injury is a risk. And Baldwin is coming off an ACL. 3 QB's is not enough in this offense. We were one hit away from Jalin Marshall playing QB against Alabama.
I was surprised the Buckeyes were not going to take two QB's this cycle and this may be the reason why. The depth is definitely questionable with Baldwin coming off ACl I really doubt they would want to put a walk on in the position of being the starter either this year or next....
The running of Martell is a concern. Exciting and fun to watch but this isn't high school and Defensive players are bigger, faster, and stronger. Injury is always a possibility. When our Walk on QB lost his black stripe.... I was wondering about his readiness because we could skate to 3rd team quickly if luck turns bad. Seriously hoping our luck stays good but you never know what the future holds.
The typical running QB, sure, but you guys don’t obviously know Tater. #cerebralasallhell

Exactly. Chugunov could be the Speaker of the House in the QB room--only two people keeping him from being handed the nuclear football with OSU's launch codes.

Clever analogy Iowa. Last resort depth chart move. All due respect to the young man.
Martell doesn’t really get hit, sooo... good chance it ain’t gonna happen. #craftynorisk
The Buckeyes have two healthy QBs as of now. Baldwin is coming off a torn ACL and should redshirt this year. The coaches want to get Martell involved in the offense which could make him susceptible to contact/injury as well. I didn't love OSU coming into the season with poor depth at QB. At least they have should have someone with some experience now if the worst happens.
Chug one for Chug!

I’m not. Martell isn’t wanting to sit.
Um,...why is he coming here for 2019? OSU has a quarterback committed in each of the next two classes. Very confusing...

Welcome aboard Chris!
16-2 is SWEET!
I have never heard of this guy.
As you paraphrase it in your best Cleveland executive voice from Major League.
I don't buy one goddam drop of gas in the state of Michigan!
This guy here is dead.
Well cross him off then!
These guys don’t sound too fucking good
Here in Cleveland? I didn't know they still had a team!
Yup, we've got uniforms and everything, it's really great!
Are we going to be looking for Lou Brown too?

Welcome. You won't regret it. Also columbus is way cooler than Morgantown and not at all a shithole like Cleveland.

Isaiah? Welcome to EW.
Thank you for getting the joke.
Cleveland is not a shithole. Enough of the Cleveland bashing. Most people will not take it as a joke.
Oh come on. Don’t sell it short.
In terms of driving through the metropolitan areas Cleveland > Pittsburgh. And that's not even close. Of course I've never driven in NYC or Chicago myself but Pittsburgh is one of the most frustrating cities to drive through from my experience there. Every single time I've been there construction has ALWAYS over-polluted the highways and the speed limit on the highways is 55 almost everywhere (I'm used to it being 65, even close to cities). Cleveland is a nicer city than people give it credit for. Just because the Browns play there and LeBron has left there twice does NOT make it a shithole.
Oh no doubt. You can know exactly where you are going and exactly how to get there....and still get lost twice on the way there...and once on the way back for good measure.
Needed depth in case Haskins declares for the draft.
You win with people.
And so forth...
9 Units Strong!
Or in case he's injured? Yikes.
Don't jinx it
That's a Buckeye touchdown!
I'm on the Dwayne Train. He'll be fine. Aloha.
Not sure this is worth a scholarship.
This is definitely where I parked my car.
Think we can trust the coaching staff to manage that.
That does not change my opinion.
He's graduating from WVU, he will be a grad transfer-give him an open schollie for this year, see what happens for next year before committing to anything. He'll be taking a schollie that a walk-on would otherwise have.
I'm unclear as well. Depth is needed this year but without any scholarships to give, he won't be playing until next year? Maybe an insurance in case Martell transfers or ... I got it ... Haskins leaves after he wins the Heisman and the National Championship to become the first pick in the draft.
Just needed to talk it out. Thanks for listening, guys.
I once handed Archie Griffin the keys to his loaner car.
After Haskins wins the Heisman? UM has the September winner and now we have the August winner
I like QB depth.

Wow, this is unexpected, but I'll allow it.
Urban Meyer left an incredible legacy. 12/4/18 Ryan Day begins his.
Not enrolling until 2019. I'm guessing insurance if one of our QB commits decommit if Urban is let go and Haskins declares after the season.

Congratulations to Chris Chugunov.
I'm not around that much, running exhausted and lost...
I looked up his recruiting profile. He is a former 3-star pro-style QB with a similar size and build to J.T. Barrett. It's good to have depth but are there any reports out there on this kid's arm strength?
Good question - nothing I could find on a quick search.
Found this write-up interesting, he's more of a cerebral QB it looks:
Perhaps his limited game tape at WVU last year will shed some light. Did he only play garbage time or was it more significant than that (I know Grier is unquestionably the guy at QB in Morgantown)?
Imagine so, I'd never heard of him before this.
My guess is that he played when Grier went down.
Makes a lot of sense when you consider our second-string QB may take a lot of hits and our third-string QB is a true freshman coming off of knee surgery.
A joy which death alone can still.
The only part thats confusing is if we r already at 85 how is this gonna happen? I get that an extra guy helps with the depth especially if Haskins turns out to be a one and done...but whaere is the scholarship room gonna come from if we are at 85? Maybe someone is leaving the team that we dont know about yet?
An Ohio State spokesperson said the Buckeyes "don't have any additions to the roster at this time," and Ohio State is currently at its full allotment of 85 scholarships for the 2018 season. Taylor, however, reported that Chugunov has not yet enrolled, which could mean that Chugunov will join the team for the 2019 season.
Moment when everyone looks around the locker room and counts vs game time reps AKA who is expendable.
I would rather be on hand with 10 men then elsewhere with 10,000 - Timur Lenk
Probably had to act quickly on this guy. Jimmy may have wanted him.
Is there a recruiting profile out there on this guy? How highly was he rated (on a star scale)? Idk what the QB depth at WVU is like but I know he was playing behind a potential Heisman candidate in Will Grier there. Perhaps the school thinks Haskins could make a 1-year jump to the pros after this season if he has a Heisman-caliber year. Quite frankly I'm surprised we're landing transfers now given all the uncertainty surrounding Meyer atm. Perhaps the general belief is that Meyer will be back with the team at the end of this week. I'm assuming his eligibility wouldn't start until 2019 if that's when he enrolls. Either way this is a good insurance policy at QB. He'd be a much better option to come in and play in a pinch in the event of mass injuries then say Kory Curtis.
The first translation that came to my mind for "atm" was not "at the moment". Does this make me a bad person?
Depends on what it was (if it's too dirty you don't have to say it).
I'll take the 5th.
Automated Teller Machine?
"We get paid to score touchdowns, not kick field goals"

Strange indeed. Grad transfer's usually figure on starting... good luck
Agreed. I can't see this guy jumping ahead of Martell and Baldwin in the pecking order to start. Unless they think Martell has a high probability of transferring and they're concerned about Baldwin's injury recovery. I'm curious as to whether or not this is a Ryan Day move (unless Chugunov reached out to OSU initially). Urban has never been big on relying on graduate transfer QBs.
Martell isn’t wanting to sit. This year or next (if Haskins was to come back). Thus the talk of special packages for him.
It’s all about a contingency plan in the event Martell can’t be kept “happy”, and transfers.
Color me cornfused. We’re thin at QB THIS year.. a bit early to start ringing the bell for next year, isn’t it?
"Because I couldn't go for three." - Woody Hayes
Depends on what Haskins (and perhaps Martell) decide to do after this season. When are Mathis and Miller scheduled to enroll?
Doomsday preparation. Haskins leaves and one of our commits decommits if worst comes to worst with Meyer.
Fair enough, but what would be keeping this guy from switching programs as well?
I'd assume that this is a mid-level guy that wouldn't flip to a new school, the way that a high caliber Freshmen would.
Seems to be the case. But still, seems to be a bit early to be heading in that direction... I feel like the guy would have been a “yes” to OSU just as much one week from now regardless of the outcome of the investigation. Maybe better to wait on these kinds of moves until there is more clarity on whether they need to be made.
Then again, what do I know. I chose to eat a bag of chips for lunch as a functioning adult.
I wonder what Meyer is thinking at home reading the news about this move like the rest of us (especially if he thinks he's likely to be reinstated). Perhaps he's going, "Dammit Ryan, we already have two QBs lined up for future reps behind Dwayne and two more enrollees on the way. Why are you crowding our room?" Lol.
Oh wow. Didn’t even think about that. Wonder whether they ran this by UM earlier, or if he’s reading about it here with us as well.
Are the assistant coaches allowed to communicate with Meyer off-premises at all while he's on leave (considering his son-in-law is on staff I'm assuming he's communicated with Urban some)?
The more you act like a lady the more likely he’ll act like a gentleman.
Corey Dennis, he's a GA on Urban's staff (and works with the WRs I believe). He's married to Urban's oldest daughter Nicki.
Unacceptable. Lock him up.
I'd figure (purely speculation) that this has been in the works for awhile.
As far as I have read Urban can't have contact with the program while being on paid administrative leave.
But anyway, welcome to Chris Chugunov! Enjoy being part of the Buckeye family.
How can they enforce that outside of work though (in short, they can't really)? Meyer is close friends with Schiano and Davis and Corey Dennis is his son-in-law and is probably over at his house from time to time. Don't see why this nonsense should have to extend to their personal time outside of work. I suppose they're also monitoring Meyer's Google search history and planning to hit him with a 10-year show-cause if he so much as Googles OSU football lol.
BS Cowcat. Any coach can go to his house, email to personal account, and call personal cell.
Seriously, do you think a move like this is being done without Meyer's approval? If it is then you are dealing with a major power play which really adds to the soap opera going on. I cannot imagine Day or anyone else on staff would try a move like that.
If Meyer isn't likely to be retained then yes. If these moves are being done with his approval I'd say it's very likely he is going to be reinstated.
There's nothing saying Meyer can't talk to his friends or his son-in-law on a personal basis.
But I would imagine Meyer is keeping things squeaky clean. If there were any evidence showing he violated an order not to interfere with the program, that would be fuel added to the existing fire. It's in his best interest to distance himself until a ruling is made.
Needs to play out, can only speculate if the whole Meyer in limbo situation is making Mathis have second thoughts.
I believe Mathis is one of the recruits who came out openly after the Meyer saga started and reaffirmed his commitment to OSU. Miller is the one I'm more worried about de-committing out of the two of them since he's more highly touted.
Miller is a 2020 recruit so hard to believe he will not sit back and wait to see what is going to happen before making any decisions. he has plenty of time to switch if things go badly for Meyer.
NOt sure why this kid would be on a scholly this year or next. IN 2 years at WVU he has completed less than 50% of his passes and has a QB rating right around 100 ie not good.
Welcome aboard i guess but this kid is not very good nor does he fit our system ie he is pro style QB and has run for negative yards on his career so far
very curious decision if brought on as a scholly QB, as a walk on sure
Please tell me this kid is not a future John O'Korn or worse, Joe Bauserman.
I guess it is potentially good. They already have one in the class for next year, assuming he sticks around, but I guess it is good for depth if nothing else.
If he can't win the QB competition at WVU, then...
I actually think this is a good get.
It just sort of stinks that we lost Joey because of a slow decision whom we may have had for two years, to keep Haskins who may leave after this year.
Result, we got a good kid with Chris, but a kid we never recruited (at least I don't think) in exchange for two years of Joey and one year (potentially) of self-proclaimed Simba.
If you die before you die, then you won't die when you die.
Could he Grey shirt this year?
You mean so the team can stash him long-term like they did with Boeckman for four years?
Ahh the Super Duper Senior.
Greatest. Partying. Surname. Ever.
Interesting that he is a Pro Style QB (a former 3 star outa HS).
Win the QB job at WVU? Do you not realize Will Grier is the best QB in the nation? We need the depth at QB.,
JL class of 96
I think he was being sarcastic. And as mentioned below, Grier is one of the best QBs in the nation, but after he got hurt last year, I would assume opposing D's just blitzed ballz out at Chugs and he never had a chance. At least, that is what I am telling myself. Hey, we need the depth. I am totally on board with this.
I remember reading a few weeks ago (before the KS situation) that the OSU coaches were still at leat somewhat interested in getting another transfer quarterback to help with quarterback depth. So this has probably been in the works for a while.
I don't watch WVU football...but damn, we may need to dust off the Bauserman Passing chart if his stats from those 5 games last year are an accurate gauge of his throwing...43 of 90. However, I will absolutely gran you that 12-13 yards per completion isn't bad compared to what we've seen for a few years (and, of course, longer passes will tend to lower your completion rate).
Anyway, welcome aboard! We can always use depth and if you can get an OSU degree out of it, that will go a lot further in the job market than your undergrad from WVU.
This dude best not have any skeletons in his closet
Yes, because Meyer has been so lenient about punishing players for breaking rules since he's been at OSU. J.T. Barrett, Carlos Hyde, Marcus Hall, Storm Klein, Joey Bosa, Jalin Marshall, Dontre Wilson, Corey Smith, Rod Smith, and Bri'onte Dunn would all like a word with you.
This could mean that we are going to see a lot of Tate Martell this season than we thought and need the depth to protect from injury.
Fields of Dreams
Lets face it, we could use a Boom.
Depth is good.
Could a college kid have a better last name? I think not.
Apparently there has been some Buzz that Martell will be transferring after this season if Haskins doesn't go pro
So you are starting a rumor? Why? Where does this “buzz” come from?
For what reason? He would be sitting out the 2019 season either way as a transfer.
I’ve heard the same buzz. Purportedly he was dissuaded from making public comments. Also heard there’s a concentrated effort to keep him “happy”.
Buckshave7 says 5’10” QB’s can’t play in the BIG or NFL
Could someone find out if he has a "weenie" arm? I'm asking for a friend.;))
We didn't lose the game.. we just ran out of time. Vince Lombardi
We lost a grad transfer QB and we gained a grad transfer QB. Always nice to have experienced relief pitching in the bullpen. That is all.
Went to a W.Va board to read a little about him. Man, it's crazy the hate that fan base has for OSU. I never did understand stand it..
Jealousy I guess.
I lived in WV for 3 years when I was young (in Marshall country though, close to Huntington, at the time when Randy Moss and Chad Pennington were playing for Marshall). I have a close friend who is a WVU fan who has nothing but disdain for OSU because of how big the program is. It's an inferiority complex thing with some of them.
Yeah, I was raised in Ohio from birth till 18 so I had no outside perspective. It wasn’t until I began moving around for college and work and talking college football in the various states I lived in before I learned just how much the rest of the country hates the Buckeyes. I grew up thinking everyone hated Miami, FSU, and USC but no, there is so much national disdain for OSU.
Looking forward to getting that QB jersey...with Chugalug on the back
If you have nothing to hide you have nothing to fear.
Wasn't it Bobby Petrino who said, "quarterbacks are just like mistresses--you can never have too many and you should always make sure they're wearing a helmet"?
Here is my take on this young man. I think they wanted two qb's and Urban has said he likes 4 in the barn. This years class of qb's is not very good and most of the good ones are gone and this young man has game time as little as it maybe and college practice time. After this season unless Haskins has a year that's OUTSTANDING he will return. I can't recall any qb ever that has gone Pro after one year at any school? Next I can't see Martell sitting another season he came to play and the system doesn't fit his style either. Last of all did Urban give the ok on this and how did he if he can't be around to give the ok? That may have been stupid he is in the know some how. Oh yea son in law is on the staff.
Mitch Trubisky only started one season at UNC and was the #2 overall pick.
I seriously doubt Haskins leaves after 1 good year. Why is everyone assuming this?
Haskins has privately (among teammates) alluded to 2019 being a weak QB draft class.
Even so who made him a top 50 selection? One very good performance is not enough for the NFL.
Just a messenger.
Chugunov? Great, now the Russians are meddling with O State Football.
I think I'd trust an Ohio State walk on QB over a grad transfer from WVU. One good assumption about this young man, I bet he's a partier. What else is there to do in Morgantown?
Most ironic scenario in college football history could be headed our way: Haskins and Martell go down with injuries early in the season and Baldwin isn't ready to play yet. Chugunov comes in and leads the Buckeyes to another 3rd string QB National Championship! Wolvie fans would be apoplectic as yet one more of their heralded grad transfer QBs falls short of the promised land... again.
I hear the depth argument, but... How many backups do we really need next year? Remember, we add Mathis next year too.
