Film Study: Leaning on a West Coast Classic Should Make Life Easier for Dwayne Haskins

The potential is there, Dwayne has as high of a ceiling as any QB that has ever played for the buckeyes. If he can put it all together i have a feeling we are in for something special, he has first round talent.

Have we forgotten Cardale started to open the 2015 season? He was very much a pass-first QB. You don't have to go all the way back to 2007 to find that lol.

He said clear starter in fall camp.  Cardale was not.

HS

Cardale was the clear starter to the coaches Beck and Meyer.  They just didn't want to tip their hand.  So Cardale wasn't clear to us fans because JT was elected team captain as a sophomore, which put a wrench in the works.

I watched that video of Dwayne's ball to Saunders against UNLV and got all tingly. That is an absolute DIME.

If a lot of the fans weren't clamoring for him since 2016, I would say there isn't that much pressure on him. But that's not the case. Dwayne has to play spectacular from the jump. Period. Especially with Tate waiting on the wings. I definitely don't wanna hear any excuses this year. His time has arrived.

HS

I couldn't help but giggle at the last clip. If he can hit that consistently, our offense will completely open up and will be unstoppable.

HS

Haskins really does throw a gorgeous deep ball. I’ve convinced myself that I will remain optimistic when he throws a couple of bad picks. J.T. had a few pretty bad ones last year as well, and we largely survived those.

HS
JTstan16's picture

JT only had 5 INTs all year outside the Iowa game (which was an anomaly). Don't make it seem like he was Tanner Lee.

HS
CieGrant_Blitz's picture

True but he did have a few terrible picks outside of the Iowa game, like the pick 6 in B1G championship game is as bad as it gets.

HS
bd2999's picture

Yeah, he had some bad ones. I also feel that he was so cued in to avoiding those mistakes that he would not throw some of the passes he should have probably thrown. Instead choosing to take off with the ball. That often worked for him but he might have been able to make a better play downfield.

HS
OSUBias's picture

Agreed, he’s not Tanner Lee. That’s why I said “a few” and not “a multitude.”

My point was: he’s going to throw some picks trying to force the ball downfield into some tight windows, and we all need to take a deep breath when he does. You take the ups and downs with a gunslinger QB, and we haven’t had one for so long it’s going to be an adjustment.

It also baffles me when we selectively eliminate plays or games to suit our narrative. “If you take Iowa out” would be great, but that game happened. And the telegraphed pick 6 on the opening play of the game was before he was forced to push it and take more risks.

HS
CowCat's picture

Good article. I understand better the cat-and-mouse game that Wilson and Day are playing. Play the flat, we'll take the deep corner or the snag.

To make these concepts work, the deep ball has to be a legitimate threat. Fortunately we have 2 QBs that have shown they can make that throw (Haskins, Baldwin). I don't know about Martell, as I haven't seen him throw a deep corner route.

Haskins indeed has a beautiful pass and a great throwing motion.  Youv'e gotta love it. The question I'm looking at is: does he have the bandwidth to quickly and consistently determine which receiver to throw to under pressure?  He has shown a tendency, altho' rarely, to throw a beautiful pass into coverage.

Man, in the second-to-last video JT threw that pass so late.

Couldn't resist.

HS

In the video of the Penn State game, the first thing I noticed was JT threw the ball behind Hill. But I wasn't going to venture down that road by commenting haha.

JT Barrett's 40 time at the combine was 4.7 and Dwayne Haskins 40 time has been recorded 4.5.

Gonna be a fun year.

HS

Fact that its .2 faster than JTs is amazing.  I feel worst case its the same.  But I love watching footage of Haskins throwing the ball, amazingly quick release, a thing of beauty.

HS

It's no surprise that Haskins has good straight line speed, but a fast 40 time doesn't equate to a better runner. Durability, agility, and lower body strength are all areas JT is better than Haskins in. Throw in pocket awareness (for the time being) and vision and you see a bigger picture.

HS
saltybuck61's picture

Absolutely. People forget that Todd Boeckman had a faster recorded 40 time than Troy Smith. I doubt anyone would argue that Boeckman was a better runner.

HS
Sanantonefan's picture

The key however, is not the footspeed, but the read. JT was a master at that. Dwayne has to get comfortable doing it.

However, his ability to hit any throw will open up things for our offense. Our RBs will then feast.

Not just the deep passes but the 6 - 18 yard passes. A balanced attack of passing and Weber / Dobbins running will make play calling better than what we're used to seeing. I can't wait to witness the improvement.
Chip Kelly plays.... Hmmmm, maybe in his spare time, Day can illustrate a few of his own unique plays. I bet he has a few dozen.

HS

Agree! Hitting guys like Campbell, Hill, and McCall in stride and in space on the intermediate routes is going to give opposing Ds matchup nightmares. It certainly worked to perfection against the weasels last year.

Was the snag concept what was called on 4th and 4 against Oklahoma? Cause whatever that play call was I freaking hated it.

HS

I think you let Haskins have a decent number of roll outs, and you let him get the RBs involved early, suck the backside of the defense up into the box (also using the running game) then let him uncork some passes deep.

Urban Meyer left an incredible legacy. 12/4/18 Ryan Day begins his.

I cant wait to see a perfectly thrown ball to any of our receivers who burn a DB over the top instead of the ball being thrown 10 over their head or 3 yards behind them as they break. I loved JT (still do) but if I had any complaints that would be it.

Haskins will run (no pun) the offense fine, and here's to Day and Wilson letting him have the reigns.

He looked pretty good against the team up north, why change anything... other than throwing the ball more and less QB runs up the middle.

I don't see Haskins running the zone read like JT. It will probably be more QB draw plays like Cardale ran at the end of 2014. Draw 'em in and truck straight down the middle like a bowling ball.

I am excited to see the willingness of Haskins to attack the backside of that play, whether it is a TE or a WR! The concept assures 10-20 yards one on one for that player and works for either type of position player!

Want to see Train make all the throws to backs, TEs and receivers with that quick release and decision making. His ball has speed or touch when needed and his accuracy will be eye opening to the national pundits. And wait until he hands off on some of those RPOs; backers and d backs heads will be spinning. They are going to have to cover the field 30-40 yards deep nearly every play, which makes his job so much easier than years past. I believe we will be Oregon with more talent on offense and a much better defense.   All we have to do is stay healthy and we will be the 1 or 2 seed in CFP.
