If CalPoppy sees you stepping on those plants along the side he'll tear you up. Or at least make a goofy edit on your comments.

Please tell me algae is not among the plants OSU installed.

That looks awful.

Our honor defend, so we'll fight to the end !

I don’t think it’s algae. Some other aquatic plant.

Hopefully they also installed a filtration system.

If they get some flow in the system, and they have some plants to utilize the inevitable nitrogen that will flow into the lake, then they shouldn’t have issues with algae.

Looks like they planted emergent vegetation to help with that. plus the gentle slopes will help reduce injuries when people end up wading into the lake during those “special” times of the year. Still no diving, though.

I love the look of it. In 86 my roommate from the towers and I were heading back from High Street after a hard night partying. There was ice on Mirror Lake and assumed it would hold me while I took a leak. I was wrong. Went right through the ice. It was freezing and I thought I was going to die while trying to get my frozen wallet out of my pocket for Morrill Tower security check in!

They can drain the lake in an hour. I jave a feeling it'll get emptied yearly towards the end of November.

I just read another article about the quick drain option. Seems like you’re right. I’d be surprised if there’s water in it at all come November.

So after they drain it, fill it with beer and jump in. Make it Coors Light so no one will be tempted to drink it.

I don't always drink Coors light, but when I do, the defense is usually on the field

I’d rather swim in the swamp water lol

It may be. I went to a summer party in my hometown and their CL was flat from the previous night. Flat, it goes down like water. 10 cups later I was puking a black tarry substance off my moms front porch. It sure as hell looked like swamp mud

Have you ever seen a fierce animal who you were sure wouldn't bite? Because I haven't.

All drains can be blocked, just a thought...

They can stop the jump by draining it, but they can't stop them from Co-ed mud wrestling in what's left. Consider this tradition improved.

Shoot, I can't get our whirlpool tub, aka the indoor swimming pool back when our daughter was in grade school, to drain faster than 20 minutes.

And, man, I hope they have a grate on that drain. And where will all that water go?

Looks much better then it did in the mid 80's when I was there. Looks pretty impressive.

It does but there's also an aspect about it that's contrived and manufactured so it feels fake, whereas the original had naturally evolved over the years, like how ivy growing on college buildings once just happened but now it's planned.

Boo. In my day the horseshoe was actually a horseshoe and mirror lake was full of duck shit.

Beating the skunk weasels every year is the tradition I care about the most, but I am sad to see the mirror lake jump tradition go.

My Dad talked about Mirror Lake 'festivities' occurring when he was a student in the mid-50's.

I was too stoned and introverted to recall such things occurring in the late 70's to mid 80's, but I am certain others participated. I do recall some MMen getting thrown into the river for abusive treatment of an impromptu post-game Buckeye Girls Choir singing the raunchiest version of Hail to the Victors I have ever heard!

Before and after picture would of been nice. Im sure it's nice but don't  understand  the plant life in the water along the side of the bank. If it is what I think it will cover the entire lake in a year or two? Then the lake will become a swamp.

I'd imagine the dirt and plant life adds another border of safety.. Was just cement/stone before.. if they drain this in November people will just move up the jump date moving forward.. they are covering anyone who falls near the water's edge from hitting their head on anything other than dirt/plants..

It looks a lot smaller now.  I wonder if the fountain will still be there?

I sure hope so. And I hope the water clears up, too. I'm all for progress, but those pictures make it look like we took a big step backwards.

Why do they even call it a lake? Is it not a pond? If you can drain it in an hour that is not a lake.

HS
LeftCoastBuckeye's picture

They are big into storm water retention ponds out here, and that was my first thought upon seeing the above picture.  I'll reserve final judgement till I see it in person but, until then, color me skeptical.
