This Zach Harrison situation is puzzling, intriguing as hell, but puzzling nonetheless.

Even if I take off my scarlet glasses (allow me a moment while I do so), I just don't see the allure of PSU or TTUN if you're the top pass rusher, nay, the top player in the country?

You can come to Ohio State and get at least a year, maybe 2, probably more, under the greatest DL coach in the game right now. You can't put a timeline on Johnson because that thought/threat of retirement is always there, but let's be real, a year under Larry Johnson is better than 2-3 under just about anyone else.

You can come to Ohio State and play in your back yard... And maybe that's a knock as well, you'd have to imagine there is some pressure there to perform at an even higher level if you're that guy going to the hometown school and you're the most highly recruited kid in the country.

That's about the only negative I can see with the OSU/PSU/TTUN decision. There would be added pressure being a hometown kid.

If you go to Michigan you're not going to get developed the way you could at OSU, and odds are your head coach and positional coach are going to be canned within the next 2 years.

PSU hasn't turned out a decent pass rusher in the last 4 years (since we took Larry Johnson off their hands)...

I don't know, I'm obviously missing something else that's at play here... If anyone has any other insight feel free to help me out.

Ultimately I still think he's a Buckeye, but this recruitment has for sure been an interesting one.

Urban Meyer left an incredible legacy. 12/4/18 Ryan Day begins his.

HS
Hanawi_'s picture

A vast majority of the time, it comes down to relationships. I think Michigan's hire of Al Washington this offseason was a big one for them. He'll probably take over for Mattison soon and recruits seem to really connect with him and love him. Same could be said about Franklin. I think the guy is scuzzy and fake as hell, but again, he's doing something right, because kids and parents really take to him.

I'm a little concerned that the 2019 class is not going as well because Ohio State has lost some of the best recruiters over the past two years (Fickell, Smith, and Coombs). Davis seems to be a dud on the recruiting trail and I think Taver and Grinch are still big unknowns. Taver wasn't recruiting at Coombs level when he was here the last time, but he does seem to have made solid in-roads with the 2020 class. I rarely hear about Grinch on the recruiting trail. Right now, Schiano is probably our best recruiter, and he is almost certainly leaving next year. Johnson could go at any time. The Davis hire is really looking like one that might come back to haunt Urban in the same way that promoting Ed and hiring Withers did in the past.

I don't mean this to be snarky in any way, but how do you explain the 2020 class? That one is already shaping up to be one of Urban's best with the same staff that is recruiting 2019.

My honest opinion is that the 2019 class (not OSU's, nationwide) lacks the same level of talent you see in the other classes. It really looks like there are maybe 30 elite players in the 2019 class and Alabama and Georgia have the market on them (with OSU at a somewhat distant 3rd). For example, look at the drop-off there was with QBs. Grant Gunnell went from the 5* quality QB to get in the class to a low 4* in no time (not to pick on one kid, I'm sure he's talented). I also remember it coming out after the Elite 11 that a scout there was saying that there wasn't a QB on the field in 2019 that he'd take over QBs in previous classes. Perhaps someone who follows recruiting more closely than I do could correct me on this line of thinking, though? I think you have a small group of elite talents, and then a lot of guys who are solid 3/low 4* types who have potential, but not as much surefire high 4* kind of talent as previous years. Or so it seems to me watching OSU and Clemson's recruiting this year.

HS
InTressITrust's picture

The new guys haven't had the time to build relationships with the 2019 class and are playing behind I think. 2020 is good because the coaches could make relationships earlier in the process.

HS
bd2999's picture

I think this is a good point. I do not really know how well each coach recruits exactly, but not sure I would write them off either.

HS
Hanawi_'s picture

I think that's a fair point and I would agree with you about the 2019 class overall. I do think some of the guys could be solid recruiters, but not every coach is a good one. OSU lost some of the best in the country over these two years and it affects relationships with the class. I will say that the biggest thing the 2020 class has going for it are very personable and outgoing leaders in the class. Paris Johnson, for example, has been putting in serious work on the recruiting trail.

Outside of Wilson, I rarely hear much about 2019 guys in recruiting and it has been mentioned how little interaction they have with Zach Harrison for example. That's fine, but I think it really does help a lot to have those elite social butterfly kids to do some of the lifting. Gill was huge for getting guys in his class.

HS
bd2999's picture

Yeah, it is hard to say, I imagine it helps but we have also seen in past years players push hard for guys that will end up somewhere else or that the coaches are not as in on. I think for Harrison it would help if he was close to some of the players too. I have not heard much about his interactions with the players though. I know he is close with Larry Johnson and likes what he could help him do and take him to the next level.

But you are right, those things can matter when you are making choices that are otherwise close in the end. At least for the player. Not that the 2019 class is bad or anything but it seems like an unusual class. Not meant at a shot at Harrison or the top guys, but some of the lower tier five stars and the like may not be ranked that high in other years. Not that there are zero good players available, just not the depth of other classes.

HS
EvanstonBuckeye's picture

Great analysis. This class is all over the map nationally. You can see it in the serious fluctuations in rankings, as well as in the writing by Rivals and 247, not to mention our own Andrews and Birm. There are a ton of recruits out there, but perhaps not so many that are separating themselves from the pack.

It's not just pressure to perform as a "hometown hero".  A change of scenery can be alluring as hell.

Case in point: I grew up in the Columbus area and was dead-set on attending college somewhere else.  I had been accepted at Indiana, and was really looking forward to going to school in Bloomington.  It wasn't until I was talking to friend of mine midway through my senior year of high school that I realized that, at my core, I was a Buckeye.  Fortunately, I'd applied to OSU at the same time I'd applied to IU, so I changed my plans and went to school in my backyard -- and I've never regretted that decision (it helps that I met my future wife on the first day of class).

I'm sure Harrison is trying to weigh his options and -- ultimately -- determine whether his desire to get away is greater than what's likely his best opportunity to succeed at the next level (that's not to say he wouldn't succeed at UM and PSU, but they don't have Larry Johnson).  He seems like a smart kid who understands the gravity of his choice and doesn't want to rush his process when he doesn't need to.

Give the guy some time, he'll come around.

HS
bd2999's picture

Like others have said, relationships are the thing. That and if the guy is considering going away from home further. It sounds like he has good relationships with OSU coaches and has been to the facilities more than he has been to anywhere else. That is a plus. He is not the slam dunk I think we all want him to be but I also think it is a mistake to think that OSU is not in the best general spot.

I think the guy does want to be a part of all three schools. He likes parts of all of them and I think that could be said about many recruits.

But if we are seeking understanding [i.e. clarity - no longer puzzled]... are our efforts ever 'enough'?

Went foggy on my Marcus Washington pick tonight. Was going to switch it back to Ohio State as a gut feeling based on conversations with him and those close to him, but the Urban stuff threw that out the window — at least for the time being. Don’t be surprised if he ends up delaying his announcement altogether.

HS
OSU069's picture

You might not know this yet, but do you think a good amount of our current commits for 2019 would decomitt if Urban was no longer here?

HS

I honestly don't see any of them backing off their commitments. The relationships are elsewhere on the staff, not just with Urban.

HS

Who do you think would decommit? I’ll give you reasons why they won’t. I’d be more worried about 2020 than 2019, if we’re being honest. Would certainly have to temper the “greatest class of all time” talk.

HS
bd2999's picture

Yeah that is among the big concerns. Even if those guys have good relationships it would be a battle to keep them or draw in new guys with this hanging over the place. Parents alone my push the kids to look elsewhere given this as a bad example of development as a person.

Even though the situation is complicated, that is how I imagine it will be taken in the end.

It seems like Washington loves OSU and he wants, or wanted to be here, but he also liked Zach Smith a lot as well. I believe he would like Brian Hartline as well, but he already took his OV. Just seems like he would rather be at OSU, if things were stable, but would choose Mizzou because it's the safer pick. This whole Zach Smith debacle happened at an awful time in his recruitment, between an OV in June and a set commitment date in August.

HS
Andrew Lind's picture

And there it is.

HS
Braxton2Devin's picture

Andrew, could you expound upon the 2020 recruits whose relationship with Urban is of the utmost importance in their recruitment? I remember earlier you stated that a potential Urban dismissal would not have that heavy of an effect on the 2019 class.

HS
stxbuck's picture

Lejond Cavazos dad/family is pretty tight w/ Urban-his dad coached w/ Urban years ago or played for him-forget which.

HS
Andrew Lind's picture

I think it could certainly impact Lejond. Their family is tight with Urban (dating back to his dad's days as a coach at Dallas Carter, where Meyer recruited when he was the receivers coach at Notre Dame). He's also really close with Taver, though, which could help. There's a possibility it could impact Jake, too. After all, he was waiting to make sure Urban got his extension before he committed. On the other hand, I would actually expect Jake to step up and take even more of a leadership role to keep the class together.

HS
buckslan's picture

Can this be seen as good news for Ohio State? It seems like he was all for Mizzou, and if he was then he would have stuck to his scheduled commitment. What do you make of this Andrew?

HS
JacksonOhio5's picture

Definitely makes me think Andrew was right all along and Washington was gonna be a Buckeye.  Let's hope that's still the case after this mess has been resolved.

Go Bucks!

HS
buckslan's picture

But Andrew wouldn't change his CB to Mizzou if he didn't have a gut feeling that Washington had made up his mind.

HS
JacksonOhio5's picture

Andrew said he almost immediately regretted changing his CB to Mizzou and had a gut feeling that he was gonna choose Ohio State.  He was basically the only person still thinking that Washington was gonna pick Ohio State.  That's all I meant.

Go Bucks!

HS
Andrew Lind's picture

I'm talking about it more tonight, but yes, I switched it because I know for a fact Ohio State no longer has him at the top of the list without Zach Smith. After talking to him and some people close to him, I switched it back. I know he wants to be at Ohio State, point blank. The Urban situation and the reshuffling at the position made him push his decision back, but if the former gets resolved quickly and they'll accept his pledge, I think he'll be a Buckeye. Again, that's why I was extremely reluctant to switch it and sticking to my guns in the first place.

HS
buckslan's picture

Makes sense. I know this is predicting a lot, but if Urban Meyer is retained and this mess gets cleaned up, and he actually has time to form a bond with Brian Hartline, do you think he's likely a Buckeye again? Seems like he really wants to be a Buckeye, but not in this current mess.

I am not sure pointing out the problems Meyer is in is being a white knight. Waiting for evidence is fine, but this would be one of the only ways that Meyer would get out of something like this.

That said, somebody would have to see the originals and verify them. Which the University would likely do. Nothing would be settled on a message board. I do think that if the evidence is correct than many would have to accept that the University is going to have to axe him, despite what a not good guy the reporter is, Meyer would have dropped the ball majorly.

HS

Even w/o Urban he would be playing under Ryan Day and Kevin Wilson which is better than Cristobal's staff at Oregon.

Good for the Ohio kid, but I found this a little amusing from a bash-TTUN standpoint.

Quintel Kent, at 3-star receiver from St. Edward's High in Lakewood, Ohio, announced his commitment to Jim Harbaugh and Michigan on Saturday.

A 6-foot, 170-pounder, Kent ranks as the No. 1,103 prospect via 247Sports. He does not have a 247Sports Composite ranking.

He had no other Power-5 offers.  TTUN beat out Bowling Green, Ball State, Eastern Kentucky, Kent State, Northern Illinois and Western Illinois for his services.  He is the 18th commitment in their class.

HS

Harbaugh is trying to put more emphasis on Ohio kids, and they're hoping the payoff will be some of the more higher ranked Ohio recruits. But it's not going to happen, and you aren't going to beat Ohio State by picking up recruits that we aren't even targetting or talking to.

Harbaugh does have a good track record at Stanford developing some 3 stars into great players. However, it seems like he should be a little bit pickier at Michigan. I like big schools taking some developmental type players, I just think he's settling for too many of them too early in the cycle in 2018-19.

HS

Michigan has almost no buzz right now. In hindsight, the sleepovers and other gimmicky stuff Harbaugh pulled just seems desperate.

Seems there have been some updates:

- Jordan Battle states he will visit Miami this fall and they are running 2nd to Ohio State. Sounds like he’s waiting on the Meyer decision

- Obviously there is some drama on the Garrett Wilson front as the Tom Herman report appears to have caused him to react in a way that’s not particularly telling

HS
bd2999's picture

You have to feel for Wilson. The idea of potentially being indirectly the cause of this whole thing (although even if everything is true he is not, he would just be the excuse used to trigger it) has to tare on him. You can tell he really likes OSU, I imagine it is hurting him to know that. Blaming himself.

Not on him, but if that is what is going through his mind than it is hard to blame the guy.

Ohio HS senior LBs that should merit offers are Tommy Eichenberg (BC verbal), Jamir Thomas, Luke Fulton (MSU verbal) and Dezman Cooper.  Might want to see how they perform their senior seasons first.  If the Buckeyes want a pure Inside LB, then Eichenberg should be at the top.  Plays like a real MLB and believe he has enough speed.  He is a Boston College verbal but a Buckeye offer could change things.

HS
raiderred's picture

You forgot jestin Jacobs in there. Think he’s the best of them all and will be a guy we will greatly regret when he becomes another great lb from Iowa. They produce some really good college ones down there

HS
Buckster's picture

I didn't list Jestin Jacobs, not because he not a talented player, but because he is a Outside LB. Patterson was recruited as a ILB (Mike LB) and just listed in-state ILB options.

I remember when JT passed on LB Luke Kuechly out of St. Xavier in Cinci for who knows what reason.  This was a Buckeye miss.  Kuechly was drafted by the Panthers ninth overall in the 2012 NFL Draft and 5× Pro Bowl (2013–2017).

I see Tommy Eichenberger (Cleveland St. Ignatius) as a Kuechly clone when Kuechly was in his HS senior season.  It will be interesting to see if the Buckeyes replace Patterson and if so, who it will be.

Everyone missed out on Kuechly, he ended up at BC, that means almost every power 5 school didn’t think he had it, good for him though but he’s far more the exception than the rule.

Im more worried when he goes to high schools to recruit, especially OOS schools, if Urban wont be mobbed by the press or angry women and people who now hate him. It would be extremely awkward if Urban is talking to a kid at school and that kids science teacher verbally assaults Urban in front of the recruit. I pray that doesnt happen.

Switched my Jonathan Allen crystal ball to Cincy. If it comes down to it, I can see him committing to Cincinnati in the near future and then Ohio State re-evaluating later on and possibly flipping. At this point I don't think he ends up at OSU, though. Not a whole lot else going on with 2019. Guessing that could change with Meyer returning and reaching out to players, families, etc.

Sorry I haven't been active on here lately. The football season just so happens to coincide with the busiest part of the year from a life/work perspective. Thanks to spooner and the others who post updates as they see them on Twitter and whatnot.

No Hurry Up + Ellis working too much + Spooner visiting the North Pole = recruiting news dessert.

Q: what is the first big weekend of the year when the team is working to get lots of recruits to the game? All the strong home games are in November...

Nester visited Va Tech yesterday. Seems like there could be some concern there.

HS
Andrew Ellis's picture

Obviously any team in the country would figure out the numbers if it meant getting Zach Harrison, but figured it's at least worth mentioning that Michigan just flipped a defensive end that was committed to Florida State.

https://247sports.com/Player/Mike-Morris-89688/

Think that's their fourth commit at the position.

Kangarooman's picture

Has there been ANY whispers above his status? Seems his commitment went totally dark..

HS
Andrew Ellis's picture

Nope. Not a peep. I don't think anyone knows anything at all honestly. No timeline or anything like that, but if he does enroll early as planned then he's obviously going to commit/sign before January classes start.

urbansjacket2's picture

Some rumblings the delay isn't good because it means he's leaning away from OSU and doesn't want to deal with all that backlash locally until he can scoot out of town.

No substantiation of this, just some dissection of logic it seems

HS
Kangarooman's picture

It's just speculation but it makes sense. Obviously, he is 100% entitled to go wherever he wants.

But man, is he watching the games? Doesnt he see Young and Bosa out there? Those 0-4 memes of Michigan players from Ohio are just brutal.

HS

also look at OSU players in the NFL compared to Michigan players on defense.. OSU is putting out first and second round picks.

I guess, but I am not sure that helps the cause if his family lives in the area and he visits home. It is not like he is out for good or anything. Unless his family moves. Not saying it could not happen, but it could just honestly be he wants to focus on other things.

Not saying everything is peachy with him but not sure there is reason to believe other things at the present time. When he makes a choice I imagine everybody will have their pet thoughts one way or another.

HS
Andrew Ellis's picture

Jameson Williams doesn't really have a timeline but seems to be getting closer. Don't think it would be wise to rule out Bama, Oregon, or Nebraska at this point.

Is he still favored to come to OSU? Gosh I almost forget what it was like to follow recruiting.

Yeah OSU still looks like the favorite and remain the crystal ball favorite too. There was a rogue Oregon pick submitted a while ago from one of the Ducks' writers but he's since gone to foggy.

Marcus Washington visited Nebraska this weekend and will visit Texas in the coming weeks. I still don't get the idea that he's anywhere close to being a priority for Hartline.

Andrew Ellis's picture

And I think the Nester/VT thing is worth watching for sure. I know he had mentioned in the past that he may take other visits but there could have been a bit of a communication breakdown between he and the staff on this one.

JohnnyKozmo's picture

Any chance it's related to Wright (he's the other WV OT right?)...I know he said he and Nester had some bad blood which is what cooled Wright on the Buckeyes...just wondering if the Buckeyes not giving up on Wright has soured Nester at all.

Can't say for sure but I'm really guessing it has nothing to do with Wright. OSU probably running third at best for Wright.

And word on how the visits for Robinson and Wright went this weekend?

Fields of Dreams

HS
Andrew Ellis's picture

Sounds like the Robinson visit went well and he plans on visiting again (per Birm's update). They need to get him back for an official but I really think Ohio State can get him. Michigan was a contender but it sounds like they're taking Giles Jackson tomorrow and I doubt they'd take two players who fit that same undersized slot/athlete role. Guessing it will be OSU, Bama, or Nebraska for Robinson.

Not sure which Wright you're talking about. Don't think Darnell visited this weekend unless that one flew totally under the radar.

NHBuckeye's picture

Oops, my bad.  I meant Rogers not Wright.

Fields of Dreams

HS
Andrew Ellis's picture

Haven't heard anything on that one. Honestly that kid is such a game-player and since he's 2020 I've pretty much decided not to invest too much time into following. I'm sure there will be an update this week where he says glowing things about OSU and then he'll eventually hint at some type of announcement coming (which won't be a commitment), then OSU will be confident all the while Georgia is also confident, etc etc etc. Rinse and repeat until he eventually signs in Dec of 2019 or Feb of 2020.

Buckster's picture

if Jameson Williams watches how the Buckeyes throw the ball, it seems the Buckeyes could be the choice.

I still say Doug Nester remains a Buckeye because that's where he belongs.

Man, it's been awhile since I've been this concerned about a recruiting class at Ohio State. Could still end up very good, but seems like lots of unknowns this year.

HS
OSU2002Grad's picture

Will probably end up as Urban’s lowest rated class at Ohio State. Not bad. But not the standard we are used to seeing.

HS
EvanstonBuckeye's picture

Lotta season left and I think this team will present differently than others have recently in Haskins' ability to transform the offense and d-line's overwhelming dominance. I think we rebound. There have been plenty of classes that have struggled and then turned it on.

HS
bd2999's picture

Yeah, this has been a strange class though. At least compared to past years and I think that the Andrews and others have commented on it at varying times. This class is very "reclusive" and does not seem to say a whole lot. So it is hard to get a vibe about where uncommitted guys are leaning.

So, we are left on something said a month or months ago with little else known by anyone it seems. I respect that of the players in the way but it is frustrating from the perspective of fans watching this sort of thing.

One has to imagine that how good the defensive line is has to help with a guy like Harrison in particular. At least one would hope that it does. OSU's defensive line dominance has looked better than PSU or Michigan through this point of the year, but that may or may not mean anything.

We're allowed a certain amount of tickets for recruits, not a large amount by any stretch but I'm sure if we were seriously interested we'd have pushed for him to see us in person.  Just like when we played Oklahoma, we won over many kids who saw us dominate in Norman in '16

HS

Those kids we won over were on officials at Oklahoma, not invited by OSU.. not sure if that's what you were inferring, but it doesn't work that way

NHBuckeye's picture

Not the best news.  I find it interesting that you are predicting the WR class to now just be 3 guys.  It had been 4-5 from the start.  Are you thinking OSU is going to land someone unexpected at another position?

And as for this WR class, the positive-thinking side of me is realizing that Kam Babb is essentially part of this class.  And Babb, Wilson, Jameson, and (hopefully) Robinson is a class we take any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

I had been thinking four for a while but right now it seems to be trending more toward three. Obviously there's always a chance someone blows up late in the process like Chris Olave last year so you never know. I think I'd personally go four but if they can get Wilson, Williams, and then a guy like Robinson that's still a pretty awesome haul.

Hanawi_'s picture

Wonder if they would go after Trevon Raphael from Solon if they were looking for another WR. It's kind of crazy that the top 7 uncommitted WRs in the composite have all been linked to OSU at some point: Kyle Ford (might be a stretch), Higgins,Bell, Williams, Jalen Curry, Washington, and Trey Knox. That doesn't even include Robinson. Seems like they have been looking for 4 for this class all along.

Seemed like most of the OSU recruiting guys seemed pretty skeptical that he was going to be after ZS left. Hartline has not been as interested in him as the previous coach. He did seem like a reasonable player to me, but I guess one has to differ to the coach. I am really hoping we see something on the WR front soonish. Be it Williams and Robinson or somebody else. Those seem the most likely at the moment from what I have read.
