Doesn't look like the Bearcats are getting close to yeoman's pay for next year's tilt? I can see how in-state schools are getting less in regards to proximity and market demand, but that's 600K less than BG is receiving?

Cincy is also a better program than BG. The payout generally correlates to how good the program is. Generally.

I specify generally because we are paying a power 5 school 1.7 mil to play us this year, which seems excessive, even if they are terrible.

Guess however they want to slice it up.

FAU and Lane Kiffin's visit next year is going to be a hoot...

I hope Kiffin is still at FAU for that... for the memes

HS

He just received a contract extension last month, so barring some egregious off-field insanity he'll make the trek to Columbus.

I wouldn't expect another double digit win from the Owls this year (tallied 11 last season with a bowl victory), but Kiffin's done a good job in Boca Raton so far.

This is Joey Freshwater Lane Kiffin we are talking about.  All bets are off.

I'll take FAU +21 against Oklahoma. He's got a great running back as well as some transfers eligible this season.

Kiffin to LSU would be vastly entertaining. Keep Orgeron as an assistant.

Yeah it would - and I just commented in today's Skully about Orgeron and how he's on the warmish seat in Baton Rouge.

Kiffin back in the SEC wouldn't surprise me at all.

Take note ttun, if you want the true definition of ‘little brother’, take a look at the OSU - Cincy relationship in dollars.

Apologies if this is a faux pas for placement but edit note:

"Texas will pay Ohio State $500,000 to travel to Austin in 2015, while the Buckeyes will pay the same sum for the Longhorns’ trip to the Shoe in 2026."

I assume this travel to Austin is for 2025?

Florida Atlantic has WAY better negotiators than UC. That's a riot what UC took.

Wondering if the $$ totals have anything to do with that game being originally scheduled for 2012? Could have been negotiated a decade ago.

Crossed my mind. Someone noted that payouts may correlate negatively to program strength, but that seems dramatic.

Maybe Cincy just isn’t filing the FOIA records requests the way the good folks at 11W are doing to calibrate their asks? Doubtful, but who knows for sure.

That's correct. The original agreement between Ohio State and Cincinnati was signed in 2007, so that's a big reason why the payout for that game is so much lower than the others. Ohio State actually paid Cincinnati more ($888,246) for the 2014 game, which was played as originally scheduled.

BrutusB's picture

So prices have gone up $1M+ in less than a decade?  I love CFB and all, but that sort of screams "bubble" to me.

HS
Lighteyes's picture

Yes, but over the same span, TV revenue has increased far more. If Google is to be trusted, the most valuable conference in 2007 (SEC) paid out $10m per school; the B1G is projected to lead conferences in revenue in 2018 at somewhere in the ballpark of $45-50m per school.

There's a limit somewhere, but I don't think we're quite there yet - as long as television advertising remains a great way to reach people and live sports stay the most valuable form of television advertising, there'll be money there to spend.

pay $1.4 million to Florida Atlantic, $375,000 to Cincinnati and $1.3 million to Miami (Ohio) for its three home non-conference games in 2019."

That's a rather pedestrian non-conference schedule there one would think. Won't make many points with a playoff committee.....

My guess is that week was extremely difficult for us to fill with few options remaining and the folks in Buffalo knew it, so they gouged us good as a result. Wouldn't be surprised if there were a few other major programs bidding against us for UB to fill a needed hole in scheduling.

Can you get a similar list for what other schools pay their visitors?  Just wondering if these are 'market rate' or if we're paying higher or lower than the average.

HS
Dan Hope's picture

Here's a couple examples:

Michigan is paying $1.4 million to SMU and $1.2 million to Western Michigan this season: https://www.freep.com/story/sports/college/university-michigan/wolverine...

Alabama is paying $1.9 million to Southern Miss in 2021 and Western Kentucky in 2023, and $1.91 million to Utah State in 2022: https://www.montgomeryadvertiser.com/story/sports/college/alabama/2018/0...

So it would seem as though Ohio State's payouts are in line with the market rate, at least for schools similar to Ohio State.

lol as if officials matter in a game the Buckeyes are going to win by 7 TDs.

HS

I found it interesting because the PAC-12 insists on their officials for their home non-conference games. That has led to some big blown calls like Wisconsin at ASU and Oklahoma at Oregon. I wonder what the arrangement will be when OSU ventures to Autzen Stadium.

That UC game is going to get canceled. I am 99% certain of that.  For starters, the 2019 OOC is embarrassingly weak. Wven when TCU was on it in place of Miami it wasn't exactly stellar, now it's dogshit.  I suspect OSU will end up playing another single game at a neutral site and just buy UC out, which they will gladly take since they can go get $1M from someone else or can bring in a cupcake with that $375k and get a win where they would have taken a loss.

HS
hetuck's picture

I disagree. They won't give up the home game dollars. If you only have to give UC $375K, you pay a lot of stadium renovation costs. I'm just hoping they hold the line on ticket costs next season.

So I assume TCU also gets 5 Mil from cowboy stadium? Or do they get less because of proximity?

HS
Dan Hope's picture

The contract I received was only the contract between Ohio State and Cowboys Stadium LP, but my understanding is TCU receives $5 million as well.

elgolfdog's picture

That is true, TCU received $5mil.  But, an unofficial poll of season ticket holders like myself are pissed that we lose the previous home/home agreement. We'd love to see the horseshoe, and watch buckeyes cram into our 48k stadium. I refuse to give Jerry Jones my $$.

Despite the Whore-ing ourselves out to E$PN, this is going to be a great game.  Go Frogs!

Found out from my buddy who is a CFB ref that outside of bigger OOC home games, TTUN and Ohio State request B1G officials for the rest of their games...evidently according to him, the only schools in the B1G that do that.  I asked him because he does the AAC and I was hoping he'd get the Tulane game.  He is getting the Illinois/USF game in Soldier Field so that's cool for him.  He also got to do Navy/ND in South Bend last year.

no reason for any top 10 programs to be playing anyone outside of FBS programs...its a lose-lose situation in the CFP era. a win does nothing for you and a lost can only hurt you, badly. and you're paying for it. play Kansas or Cal, etc...if you must.
