Urban Meyer and Joe Burrow Remain Close Despite Burrow Narrowly Losing Quarterback Battle and Transferring to LSU

Hard to believe Urban didn't confirm that this is indeed, the beginning of the end for Ohio State Football. Also didn't mention being beat up by hundreds of Ohio High School coaches for not picking the Ohio kid.

Joking aside, happy for Joe Burrow and hope he tears up the SEC. I think Urban made the right decision, and so did Burrow. Tough situation, but I'm happy Burrow was able to graduate to avoid sitting out a year.

I'm rooting for Joe Burrow to succeed at LSU (despite them being an SEC team). However, I haven't read up a whole lot on what's going on down there, is he considered to be the frontrunner for the job?

For an institution that has making money down to a science, you think they would be smarter than to give Burrow and Shea Patterson those odds.

That is about as close to a lock as you are going to find, barring injury.

HS
BrutusB's picture

He's the frontrunner but nothing is official until during/after camp:

Apparently, LSU head football coach and offensive coordinator Steve Ensminger can take vacation the next few weeks.

They don't even need to show up for preseason camp with the players reporting Aug. 4.

That's because a Costa Rica-based sports book already thinks it knows who's going to win the Tigers' starting quarterback competition.

BetDSI SportsBook released odds Monday who's favored to win 20 college starting quarterback battles that will decided in preseason camp that starts late next week.

The BetDSI favorite to become LSU's starter is Ohio State graduate transfer Joe Burrow who was tabbed with odds of +130. He's followed sophomore Myles Brennan at +270, redshirt freshman Lowell Narcisse at +360 and and junior Justin McMillan at +510.

LSU coach Ed Orgeron insists there will be a competition for the job. Tigers' tight end Foster Moreau said at last week's SEC Media Days that the addition of Burrow has made all the quarterbacks turn it up a notch.

We are going to rue the day Burrow left when Haskins get injured (hopefully not but defenses will be gunning for him). I thought JB played better than DH in the spring game and while I feel like DH is going to be very good, I thought JB was perfect to run the offense this year.

Have a little faith. I have no doubt Martell is going to be an excellent player as well once he improves his passing (he's already probably hands down the most athletic QB we have).

Zero doubt about that.

Ohio, the greatest state in the Union!

HS
ToetotheFace's picture

Martell will be great, and IMO will be featured near the goal even if Haskins never misses a snap this season, because it is very beneficial in short yardage situations to have a QB with mobility(one of Haskins' weak points). It would have been nice having a guy as good as Burrow as the backup, but most teams would love to have our QB depth chart even now.

HS
Beantown_Buckeye's picture

And what if Burrow got the starting job and Haskins left and then Burrow got injured? You're making up hypotheticals to support who you wanted the starting QB to be, when the same hypothetical can be posed in reverse. Burrow was actually the one who was hurt last year, not Haskins. As Urban said, he wanted Joe to be here and I think he would still be competing for the starting job if he were. He made a decision he felt was in his best interest to go elsewhere to a better situation to win a starting job and everyone involved handled it with class. It's over.

And u saw exactly how many practices that gives u the idea that JB outplayed DH in the spring?  Seems like u saw more from ur couch than the coaching staff did actually being there reviewing every rep these guys had. Get outta here with that crap.

HS
Extramedium's picture

We would rue the day either one gets injured. I don't get this argument.  As far as this continued spring game talk goes- statistically they were neck and neck until the very last play of the "game," which was not a game, it was a practice.  Even then Haskins made some absolutely insane passes that Burrow could not have made.

HS
PRO8's picture

Obviously, Burrow did not win the job in the spring

How do we know this? My thinking was Meyer never made a decision, it was never announced , as Meyer was not ready  and Burrow needed a decision so when he did not get one he moved on....

HS
JTFor President2016's picture

I mean that is most logical. Meyer didn't have to say anything at all. Burrow very easily could have just said, "I don't want to risk an August competition only to not get the job, then be stuck".

Elliott dots the eye, on this national championship win.

HS
Dstacify's picture

I feel bad for Burrow in a lot of ways. I have no doubt him fracturing his hand during the off-season last year played a big part in Haskins jumping him in the pecking order (and having an opportunity to impress while Burrow was hurt). If that doesn't happen I have no doubt JB is probably the frontrunner to start for us going to into this season. Meyer may not have been ready to announce it yet but the way Haskins played in the Game last season when called upon no doubt weighed heavily on his mind. I think it was close but he was definitely leaning towards Dwayne because of that. Burrow had the better Spring Game performance overall IMO but Haskins easily had the best throw of the entire Spring Game on that beautiful back shoulder TD throw to Jaylen Harris. That probably sold a lot of the coaches then and there as not too many QBs can make throws like that.

11 Strong.

HS
BUCKEYE3M's picture

This is the most likely occurrence. Burrow needed one thing, and it wasn't going to happen - an all out declaration that he was the starter and it wouldn't be competed further.

And, I don't blame him one bit, especially not being a graduate transfer.

A lot of people are huge fans of both and I'm in that camp as well. What the pro-Burrow contingent fails to acknowledge is that there was no way Urban was awarding the starting job in April when he had two potential starters capable of being all-conference QBs. Also, Burrow barely played last year and Haskins played a major role in a win against Michigan. This was a battle that for fairness and making certain they had the right guy should have gone through the summer and even into the first couple games leading into TCU. I would have been happy with whoever earned that spot. Burrow could have won that battle. He made the decision to go, not Urban. I hope he beats Bama for LSU. Geaux Joe.

I am certainly in Dwayne Haskins corner and hope he has a record setting year .....  I think people are reading more into Urban's comments than is there.  Meyer said that both Haskins and Burrow were neck in neck during the Spring work outs, but as we all saw, Burrow out-gunned Haskins in both completion percentage and yardage during the Spring game, so the battle would have been waged during the Fall camp.

I think Burrow decided that the risk of a Fall camp, when he had the graduate transfer "Get out of Jail" card, was too much of a sure thing to pass up.  He's smart, was more suitable to the existing offensive scheme and was more experienced in running that scheme, but he made the smart choice.  Take the bird in the hand, rather than the two in the bush.

Wish he was still with us, but he's not, so I'm backing Dwayne 100% and hope to see what Tate can do, as well ..... Should be an exciting season for the Buckeyes (but, I'll also be keeping one eye on how LSU fares this season) .....

HS
Extramedium's picture

The reason Burrow "did not win the starting job" is because he chose not to compete in the fall.  We need to stop perpetuating the false narrative that Meyer picked Haskins and that's why Burrow left.

Meyer wanted them both to compete for the job in fall camp like any decent coach would.  No one except a Certified Spring Game Expert forum commenter is going to name a starter in the spring when the competition is that close just because one of them has the threat of a grad transfer in his pocket.  It would not have been fair to anyone involved. Especially if Haskins ended up having a lights out camp and passed Burrow.  Then either the wrong guy is starting or Burrow is stuck on the bench again having not transferred.

HS
BUCKAROOTIMESTWO's picture

I don’t buy into many narratives that get tossed around (e.g lack of WR separation); that Burrow didn’t want to compete is ANOTHER ONE.

For me, after three years in the program, Burrow chose to bet on himself by positioning himself to start, without the Coach speak up to and through Fall camp.

He lived the QB room (along with Haskins) and the passing game woes and Meyer’s unwillingness to make any changes unless he was absolutely forced to (Mi game).

I believe he and family decided to make a decision to leave, so that regardless to how it turns out, WITH a real opportunity, the onus is on him by his play on the field.

HS
