Finding out Bosa is seen as a special player is not a shock, especially in hindsight.  But you can be forgiven for having trouble predicting who someone else will pick off of this years squad.  Picking just two would be most difficult.  Too many unknowns this far out.

Alabama is the other team whose talent level is filthy. The first being Ohio State. I'm not sure LSU has it at that level, but now they have a QB. And I will never type G-e-a-u-x. I loathe those not of the industrial northern shore.

HS

Clemson is absolutely on that talent level, too.

Joe needs to win the starting job before he thinks about playing Alabama.

HS
fear_the_nut70's picture

So much this.  During Alabam’s run, they did it mostly with a solid guy at QB.  While Alabama simply reloaded everywhere else, they often won despite their signal caller.  Now, they might have the best QB in CFB (time will tell as we have seen very little from Tua so far).  This team scares the hell out of me because of this possibility.

You are entitled to you own opinion, not your own facts.

HS

That portrait of Eddie George is almost as bad as that statue of Christiano Ronaldo from a while back. It barely even looks like him, and its certainly not a flattering depiction of him.

Of course Bosa is the biggest freak on the team. But I get why someone wouldn't guess thats who would be in the article. Its too obvious.

Burrow at LSU gives me an excuse to cheer for them. My brother went there and always finds it odd that despite his having gone there, I still refuse to cheer for them except when they play Alabama. So I can give him a year of cheering for them now.

HS
GareBear's picture

Really have to feel for Eddie there. It’s not like he can stand back and say “eeeewww that’s not me!” He’s just got to stand there and be the gracious honoree, while knowing it looks like something he could have made from mashed potatoes over thanksgiving.

Actually, I don’t think it’s that bad. Eddie looks quite distinguished. If you want to see bad, take a look at Brandi Chastain’s plague at the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame, which makes her look like Babe Ruth. Yikes!

Just noticed that Jamel Dean comes in at #10 on Feldman's list (a few spots higher than Bosa), the guy that OSU said was medically ineligible to play for us.  I've always found that situation a bit strange.  Either the OSU med staff had a bad day, the kid made a miraculous recovery, or there was some other factor involved that we're not privy to.  Glad to see the kid's done well, just too bad he's doing it for someone else.

My aim, then, is to whip the Weasels, to humble their pride, to follow them to their inmost recesses, and make them fear and dread us. Fear is the beginning of wisdom.   - William Tecumseh Sherman (with apologies)

HS
MichiBuck12's picture

I've always found that one odd too. There were a lot of suggestions that he was basically cut, but if they were trying to make room on the roster, he would be one of the last guys cut. If I recall correctly he was a good kid that committed early and did a lot of work helping recruit his class. He was also expected to play early. So cutting him to make room makes no sense. But he also seems to be doing well so the diagnosis that he couldn't play anymore doesn't make a lot of sense in hindsight either.

HS
Kevin Harrish's picture

I will say that I’ve spoken to people very close to that situation and without getting into it too much, it was absolutely a purely medical disqualification and I’m absolutely amazed he’s playing football at a high level.

If the QB doesn’t run as much on 3rd and 4, then the TE should be the next best automatic target.  I mean, we don’t expect Haskins to run as much as Miller and JT right ?

When you look at what the TE has done to us (Gisecki, Iowa, etc ...) it seems to make sense right ?

The number of missed opportunities to convert 3rd and short last year due to the forced JT runs has mystified all of us.  Both the WI Big Ten title game and the Cotton Bowl vs. USC should've been routs if we had just moved the chains in the second half.  Instead, we used our punter until his foot was black and blue.  I can't see that happening this year or Meyer will have a mutiny on his hands in the locker room and in the media.

God, that Eddie George painting is horrendous. Eddie definitely looks like he's ready to burst out laughing at any second.

Nick Bosa is a monster, all the speculation of what he will do this year has me chomping at the bit to see where he ends up. I think huge things are on the horizon for him (as I'm sure everyone else does too).

The Burrow thing... I don't know, I mean, ultimately I feel like the right choice was made. I think they went through the process, and Haskins just ended up being the better guy. Yes, it is odd to see a locally born and raised kid who is good at football in a LSU jersey... But at the same time, the Buckeyes have my attention, and I've put the Burrow thing behind me, hopefully everyone else has too.

Don't get me wrong, I wish him all the luck in the world. Especially hope he puts a whoopin' on Bama. As long as he doesn't come across the Buckeyes, I hope he has an outstanding year. But let's keep in mind, he hasn't had 1 practice with LSU yet, at least one where he's been in command of the offense. He still has to win their starting job after competing for the starting job at OSU.

Urban Meyer left an incredible legacy. 12/4/18 Ryan Day begins his.

That last line is particularly interesting, because if that's the case, then it would mean Jeremey Ruckert won't be a integral part of the offense as a tight end until he proves himself as a blocker. But I still think there's a chance he's too talented of a receiving threat to keep off the field.

If wide receivers can't get on the field unless they can block, there is no way in hell a TE that isn't a good blocker is going to play much.  Just ask Stoneburner how important a missed block can be.

HS
iowabuckeyes's picture

I'm not buying blocking as a reason for keeping a talented receiver off the field, especially when Ruckert could line up out wide and create mismatch nightmares for smaller CBs and safeties. On the perimeter, "blocking" is often a matter of creating a barrier between a defender and a ball carrier versus the standard textbook definition, which is physically engaging the defender, which is more common when the TE is lined up tight. The best testament to that is C.J. Saunders, of whom James Grega wrote this back on September 26, 2017:

While he isn't ready to play meaningful reps due to his lack of size in the slot, Saunders has proven in a few garbage time reps that he belongs in FBS college football. He led Ohio State in receiving against UNLV with six catches for 102 yards and a score, running crisp routes and making defenders miss at times in the open field.

The reality is, however, that Saunders is listed at just 176 pounds, and that is probably after he was pushed into a pool with full football gear on. If the Ohio State strength staff can put some weight on him without compromising his speed, I think Saunders is capable of playing in Columbus with the first-team offense. However, until he gets bigger, he is a liability on offense in terms of his perimeter blocking, which is what is keeping him off the field.

That "liability" didn't prevent Saunders from playing in 12 games and having 17 catches--good enough for 8th on the team and only one less catch than Johnnie Dixon--221 yards and a TD. His ypc was better than Marcus Baugh's and KJ Hill's. In Ohio State's first seven games, he was on the field for 115 plays, seventh most among WRs and exactly the same number as Rashod Berry.

"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." - Edmund Burke

HS
cledaybuck's picture

I buy it.  When the games were real, Saunders hardly ever played.  This despite putting up the numbers you quoted in the times he was on the field.  If it didn't matter, he would be in the games during crunch time, not just against UNLV.

HS
iowabuckeyes's picture

He was eighth on the team in catches and seventh among WRs in catches and yards, which means he wasn't one of the six "co-starters" but he was statistically the first guy off the bench. Little hard to get a lot of PT when you're not in a two-deep that's being peddled as a one-deep.

Let's put Saunders' stats into context.

  • Boise State threw for two fewer yards than Ohio State in just as many games. Saunders' 21 catches would have had him fourth among WRs and sixth overall. Their #8 receiver, which was Saunder's rank on Ohio State's roster, had 15 catches.
  • Oklahoma State led the country in passing. Saunders' 21 catches would have made him the fifth WR on their roster.
  • Oklahoma finished third in passing yards--Saunders' 21 catches would've made him their fourth leading WR and sixth overall.
  • Penn State led the B1G in passing yards--Saunders' 21 catches would've made him their fourth leading WR and sixth overall (Gesicki was #2 and Barkley #3).

"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." - Edmund Burke

HS
cledaybuck's picture

That's great he put up pretty good numbers in limited playing time, but it still didn't get him on the field (for the most part) when it mattered.  If not for his blocking, then what was it.  The receiving numbers suggest it wasn't because he was a bad receiver.  Here are his snap counts on a game by game basis:

Ind - 7

OU - 0

Army - 9

UNLV - 31

Rutgers - 23

UMD - 18

Nebraska - 27

PSU - 8

Iowa - 6

MSU - 10

Illinois - 41

UM - 0

Wisconsin - 0

USC - 2

HS
iowabuckeyes's picture

Your original point was that if WRs (and TEs) can't block, they don't deserve to play. The knock on Saunders was that he's a) small, and b) he's a liability as a blocker, ergo he shouldn't play. But his snap count refutes that--in other words, despite being small and allegedly being a poor blocker, he still he played. Now you're backpedaling and saying it dosn't matter because it was in garbage time. So which is it--he's shouldn't have played because he can't block or his poor blocking wasn't enough of an excuse to keep him off the field? Because it can't be both.

cledaybuck's picture

Your original point was that if WRs (and TEs) can't block, they don't deserve to play.

That wasn't my original point.  My original point is that if he is not a good blocker, he won't play meaningful snaps.  I would have liked to seen Saunders get more playing time last year.

But his snap count refutes that--in other words, despite being small and allegedly being a poor blocker, he still he played.

Yeah, he played mostly when the game was decided.  Look at those snap counts.  He doesn't get double digit snaps in any game that wasn't a blowout.

So which is it--he's shouldn't have played because he can't block or his poor blocking wasn't enough of an excuse to keep him off the field? Because it can't be both.

Neither.  I made no judgment on the amount he played (as I said above, I would have liked to see him more), just stated how the staff seems to view it.  And his blocking was enough to keep him off the field.  If Ruckert isn't a good blocker, I am saying you probably aren't going to see him on the field much outside of garbage time.  Granted, that could be a good number of snaps this year (as it was last year for Saunders).  I don't consider that an integral part of the offense.

If wide receivers can't get on the field unless they can block................

Sooner or later, they'll choose another team to play for in their recruiting process.   Does anyone think that Nick Saban told Julio Jones that he would only see the field at Alabama if he proved he could block and play on STs?  The idea is laughable.  If you want elite WRs to play for you, then throw them the damn ball otherwise, you'll be converting RBs into WRs and wondering why they can't catch the ball in traffic and why there is a "weak zone 6".
