Either way, it’s a bad look for head coach Brian Kelly and wide receivers coach DelVaughn Alexander.
Oh snap - the mighty twists and turns of high school recruiting.
Go get'em Cal Poppy - we are behind you !!
It's not a rivalry .............. it's a wreckoning.
I would disagree that it is a bad look for Kelly if indeed the recruit didn't communicate with the staff and out of the blue commits. If a kid out of the blue commits to Ohio State and Urban doesn't honor it, would it be a bad look for him?
I think there’s an opportunity for the staff to build a relationship rather than just cast him aside. He clearly wanted to be there. If you still feel the same in a few months, you push him out (happens all the time).
Absolutely there is an opportunity to build a relationship, but do you know which side stopped the communication?
I don't disagree with you, but if you believe Sheffield's story, he called the position coach prior to committing. Ultimately it looks bad on the head coach, but the WR coach is truly to blame.
"We gotta go win this next game and make the State of Ohio proud!"-UFM
I think the issue is that they actually accepted the commitment when they could have told him to pause the announcement/commitment during the call to inform them
Yes, they accepted his commitment that day and several coaches celebrated it on social media only to turn around less than a week later and say “sorry, we can’t take you any more.”
If the coaches celebrated in Twitter and then didn’t accept it? That’s bad!
God forbid Brian Kelly look ridiculous.
he's getting pretty damn good at it.
Axe cancer. Out indefinitely.
5-foot-19, 170-pound Sheffield
That puts him about 6-7, which makes him one skinny kid.
Is it safe to assume Ellis is a take?
"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." - Edmund Burke
Ellies BTW, he is 4' 26"
Ellie - never heard of her...
"Thousands of tired, nerve-shaken, over-civilized people are beginning to find out that going to the mountains is going home; that wilderness is a necessity..." -John Muir
Never heard of Elly Mae Clampett from the Beverly Hillbillies?
In 4 star 26th at DT? I was thinking others on the board didn't want to come here and he would be a project since the position is not of real need ?
Fat fingers (9 and 0 are right beside one another).
I really hope Notre Dame keeps Brian Kelley forever.
Maybe. Unless he keeps putting kids up on scissors lifts in windstorms.
Ohhh yeah, then there's that. I can only hope he's learned from that.
Everyone hopes he's learned from that.
Kelley has won huge every place he has been. He is to be congratulated for that from us fans of college football.
Would I want my kid to play for him based on what I see.....NOPE.
And I'm the guy 50 years ago who watched "Notre Dame" football highlights (like the Rudy Movie) on Sunday mornings before going to church.
Knowledge is Power
He's won wherever he's gone and he's a pretty good coach.. but clearly not good enough to get ND to prominence. Strongly disagree with him winning big.. though he made a championship once, I don't think he was able to drink away that memory fast enough. *starts drinking because we totally could have beatin an overrated ND for a national championship that year*..
ND will need an Urban Meyer or Nick Saban to be what it used to be.
Bad weather , Discipline, High Academic Standards.....lack of big city benefits ( you guys can determine those)...
Times have just changed and there is little one man can do.
Notre Dame is a Legacy University which will serve all involved well. (VERY WELL)..post graduation.
But the great RB recruit who is 6'2 weighs 230 and runs a 4.2....fourty....(typically from the Southern States or California)...wants the Ohio States, Georgia's, Clemson's of the world.
He doesn't want to go to a school with people wearing 5 layers of clothes.
( it gets cold in Columbus..sure...but it is a "Big City" with all the benefits of a big city)...
It's the same reason a great coach and leader of men up in Minnesota will be successful just to be .500 in the Big Ten.
He made a bad choice.
Now if he were a hockey coach.....
I hope they are stuck in 9-3 Brian Kelley la la land forever.
There is only 2-3 coaches that could have ND in the playoff hunt every year. Urban, Saban and maybe Dabo. I’d throw Dantonio in there.
OK, I'm old enough to remember that...Lindsay Nelson was the announcer??????
Born and bred a Buckeye - Buckeye 'til I die
Yes....I remember it well.
The show was a 1/2 hour....they rarely showed the opposition offense,
Lindsey Nelson would say something like " the Notre Dame defense was great.....and Navy had to punt again"!
26 minutes of nothing but he 3-5 TD's by ND.
They were in there heydey back then.
Hypnotized many a young catholic youth
I don’t define his Notre Dame tenure as ‘winning huge’
"You can never pay back, but you can always pay forward."
They will be able to give him a raise in 2098 when Charlie weis's contractual obligations are fulfilled.
"Life is not about how hard you can hit, it's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. THATS HOW WINNING IS DONE!!" - Rocky Ballboa
They're still paying Ty Willie and Weis, aren't they?
A man got to have a code...
That's why they say football at ND is not a 4 year decision, but a 40 year one...
Strive at all times to bend, fold, spindle and mutilate.
Put 30lbs on Ellies will be one of the best at the "1' TECHNIQUE
Still can't believe the level of recruitment taking place, seems like the S&G is in the running for virtually every top player in the nation. Not sure how you keep up Andrew.
Defending NW Ohio since 83
Is Ellies a take?
Yes. He has the green light from the staff.
I’m surprised that a 3 star DT has a committable offer at this time.
Another 2019 reach. Sigh.
I know I totally feel the same way. Why take a 3* from out of state this early ?
Top of the food chain
He’s damn good (should be a four-star imo), has a good relationship with Johnson and they’re not enamored with any higher-rated defensive tackles.
Andrew, would you rate him higher than Jowon Briggs? I know I have asked/commented about him too many times now. I just can't get over how such a beast of an in-state kid was able to slip through without the full court press from the staff. Please let me know whats up, and don't be afraid to tell me like it is. I just love watching the kid's tape and think he could be an arron donald of sorts..sawed off but stronger than a country ox
Such a strange situation at ND, at least to be that out in the open. I guess it is one of the pros and cons of recruiting with social media I guess. Given that ND coaches were celebrating and then told the kid no, it seems to be more of a bad look for ND than anything else at the moment.
Does anyone else find it odd that Ellies is a take, while the staff doesn't seem to be too interested in Jowon Briggs?
Might be wise to trust Larry Johnson's judgement.
I actually don't have an issue with how TJ Sheffield handled the situation, assuming what he said is true. He had an offer, he accepted an offer, it seems he was congratulated, so he has every right to be upset if they later pulled his offer. Plus, had he not come out and said something, people may have assumed Sheffield reneged on his commitment, or something happened that led to him losing his spot, such as an off field issue. So in this case, he is explaining what happened, explaining he planned to honor his commitment, and it was ND that pulled it. I also thought he was as classy as he could be given the nature of the tweet. Besides, the lack of communication is a 2 way street, and if ND no longer felt he was right for the class, I believe this should have been communicated to him, especially since ND was one of just 4 teams he was deciding between.
I was referring to Notre Dame's handling of things.
My bad Andrew, I thought you were questioning his decision to tweet what happened! I would respect your opinion regardless, but I agree, ND clearly handled this poorly.
Demarkcus? Godo Lrod.
