penn state needs to be higher. they're going to be a big threat.
Penn State is a threat, but there are scenarios where we could lose to them and still make the playoffs, as its only our 5th game. But we'll be much better off if we win all our division contests.
"We get paid to score touchdowns, not kick field goals"
-- Urban Meyer
It's been my experience over 50+ years that when your "team" is set to win a title ..from any HS Conference Crown to a HS State Crown....to a ....Collegiate National Title.
The team typically gets upset...and its the "junior class" the following year ....who get the bounces, gets the bad/good calls, stays healthy..and wins it all.....to the surprise of most.
Where TOSU stands with that premise this year....is up for debate,... amoungst our followers.
Or we can just say that the TTUN sucks.....which will solve the problem.
Knowledge is Power
You make a good point, but unfortunately we'll be considered contenders every year as long as Urban is the head coach. We're not going to sneak up on anybody.
The only sure-fire way to win it all is to win them all, and that is a tall task. Otherwise it takes a lot of luck. In 2014 we were lucky to have a competent 3rd string quarterback and we magically destroyed Wisconsin 59-0 in his first start. If that had been a 20-17 win, we probably wouldn't have made the playoff.
If you want to say that's the premise, then I guess 2018 is the year - the bulk of the team is underclassmen, several long-term stalwarts on the lines are gone, brand new QB. They may go in as favorites in the polls and on paper, but in terms of experience, there's an argument they should be less favored than 2017's experience-laden group.
Agreed. Lots of lettermen who remember the Oklahoma game and the Iowa game.
Many were not senior stalwarts last year. This year they are leaders
While the loss to Oklahoma last season ultimately contributing to Ohio State missing the CFP, the Buckeyes still would have made the playoff if they had beaten Iowa and won out.
Does anyone think TOSU would have made the playoffs last year had we beaten Oklahoma but still lost the manner we did to Iowa? I’m not certain the playoff committee wouldn’t have still left us out over Bama after that bad loss.
I think that scenario we would see OSU and Bama BOTH make it. Oklahoma would be a 2 loss conference champion and get bumped out of the spot. Bama would still play Clemson and we would have played Georgia
Oh very good point.
Way too early to determine who's the contenders, but I know this....*ichigan still sucks. :)
Enjoying daily the 62-39 ttun beatdown.
This is a year of potential vs proven, which is what worries me the most. Linebackers, secondary, and QB/receivers are what worry me as they're either new or haven't really performed as well as they should be. If they all do well, there's no one on the schedule we shouldn't beat.
'97 - Molecular Genetics
With you on everything except the qb/receivers. They might not set the world on fire but I’d bet they are a statistical improvement over last year.
Honestly I still have some reservations on the wideouts. I'm just not sure if I trust someone to make the two or three plays you need to win a tough game on the road (@psu, @sparty). Think of our big road/neutral wins and they almost always involve big plays from the receivers :
2014 @ sparty (Thomas and Smith x2)
2016 @ OU (noah brown x4)
To which I reply Austin Mack v scUM. And Jonny Dixon v PSU and scUM. Dixon can be great at times.
I get this - all are worthy here with respect to recent playoff history and/or recent history with Ohio State.
With the exception of TCU...neither apply.
Which means we're going to find out where the Buckeyes stand come Sept 15.
I'm not around that much, running exhausted and lost...
Definitely a list that makes sense.
Purdue even being on here makes sense. They've been decent the last year or so and always seem to give the Buckeyes a helluva hard time.
Urban Meyer left an incredible legacy. 12/4/18 Ryan Day begins his.
Muck fichigan !
So, you had the balls to list bama at #1?
16-2 is SWEET!
Anybody on our schedule can derail our chances. The teams in the Big Ten don't always get a mulligan. Do not give the committee any thing to run up the flag pole. We need to treat each opponent as a playoff game.
I have attended OSU games in West Lafayette three times and twice the Boilermakers prevailed in exciting games thus I can easily see Purdue on this list.
69 in 18
Solid analysis. The only modification to the list would be adding Nebraska as 10-B. The Huskers have some talent and if Scott Frost is really a magician,..well ...
Too much time spent at the North Heidelberg rather than the classroom. SSD 68-72
Purdue has made life a tad rough for the Bucks in the past. I expect nothing less this year.
Alabama, Clemson, Ttun, PSU, and TCU.
5 teams. You have seen the mountain. Now climb it.
Actually the TCU game is their first true road game. Not a neutral site when the stadium is less than 20 miles from the opponent's campus.
I don't buy one goddam drop of gas in the state of Michigan!
This will be the Buckeyes 3rd time in the stadium and the 2nd trip in 9 months. They are probably more familiar with the field in game time than TCU at this point. Wonder if TCU will sneak a few extra practice sessions there before September. Expect the crowd to be 60/40 TCU since this is not a bowl game and some folks may be saving up for a game in January.
Our people are everywhere, Esto Dignus.
It will be interesting to see the crowd makeup.
TCU is close to Jerry World, but TCU has roughly 1/6 of the student enrollment as OSU. OSU also has the largest overall CFB fanbase in the country. How that applies to Texas and neighboring states ... I don't know.
I'm also guessing that there will be local CFB fans that aren't associated with either school -- It is one of the marquee non-conference games of the season.
I hope Zeke is buying a large number of tickets and supporting the Buckeyes. In all honesty I don't know if Cowboys are home or away that week. Would be great if he's a friendly face on the sidelines - if possible.
The Zeke factor. I like the idea!
But hopefully the Alumni Association and its associated national chapters will make it easy and affordable for Buckeyes to travel, stay and attend.
While the stadium is certainly closer to TCU, and the game is away from Ohio Stadium, it is not a true road game in the sense that it will not be an overly hostile environment. There will probably be as many OSU fans there as TCU fans. It will have the feel of a neutral site game like we would find in the post season.
Sparty returns 21 starters I believe w a great HC. That is the one Im worried about. All others...we got this.
The one team not on here that could throw a monkey wrench into things is ND. Cant stand them, actually think I dislike them more than TTUN and think they will regress this year. but because they get this non-affiliation pass at times, they could screw things up if they win, which I don't think they will
Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, PSU, Wisc
Who’s the downvote fucker?
Good list. TTUN is a wild card this year. If Patterson really is their savior and the D lives up to their hype, The Game could be for the East again like last edition in the Shoe.... Or if they lose to ND week 1 and Patterson doesn't light the world on fire, I could see them playing for pride with 3 or 4 losses like last year.
I actually think they are a little more dangerous to OSU if they lose to ND. They very well could be in desperation mode if ND is their only loss because a second loss would truly knock them out of the playoff. And if they lose to ND and then lose a second one before The Game, Harbaugh won't hesitate to start prep for OSU, even at the expense of another loss or two. They started installing plays and packages for OSU with more than half the season remaining last year. If they already have two losses, Harbaugh knows that beating OSU is more important than avoiding a third loss to some other Big 10 team. Michigan fans will forgive 9-3 or 8-4 if one of those wins is OSU.
Good points. However, if they have 3 or more losses it's probably not unreasonable to think guys who did not grow up w/ the rivalry like Gary, Hudson, Winovich, Patterson may be looking ahead to their NFL prospects. Personally, I don't really care either way as we have a coach who takes the rivalry as seriously as possible and a team who has bought in to the importance of The Game... and we have better players.
ttun getting to much credit.... Urb will have them ready ... I worry more about MSU, PSU,Purdue,TCU and Wisky as I expect them in the BIG Ch game.... then we start getting serious with Clemson,Ala,and the other team that makes the playoffs besides them and the Bucks.....
They started installing plays and packages for OSU with more than half the season remaining last year.
After The Game last year J.T. Barrett mentioned that we do pretty much the same. It's not just one week of preparation.
The scenarios that bother me are if TTUN has 2-3 losses coming into The Game and our players get complacent and assume they'll win at home, or that we "play not to lose". I don't want to go back to the Cooper days.
I’m kind of hoping Iowa wins the West this year.
During the regular season, I think PSU, MSU, and TTUN are the biggest threats, in that order. Yes, I agree with Purdue as the trap game, but I believe the trap game threat is greatly diminished after last season. Everyone is a huge threat in the CFP!
Can’t wait for 9/29. Gonna be a Buckeye Beat down in Sandusky Valley
I agree with your order southalabama. The trip to Happy Valley will be a hard one.
Alabama, Clemson, PSU, Michigan, MSU, TCU, Wisconsin, Purdue, Washington, Maryland.
Despite its easy schedule, UGA takes a step back this year.
“I intend to make Georgia howl.” General William Tecumseh Sherman
Buckeyes aren’t on the list. I’ve seen it before. Always need to be cautious of tripping yourself.
3X NC HC with HIS best roster EVER!
Gonna be a special year.
Round on the ends and "HI" in the middle. O-HI-O.
The picture drives me nuts. Alabama keeps winning titles with terrible qb's or at least qb's who pale in comparison. They just keep doing what they need to win the title, except for once against Clempson and oh yes, us the one time. Nice how they talked about the "rematch" with Clempson last year, but nobody brings up the top team that gave them their biggest beating during this "new" college playoffs. Sigh.
Just as we were the first 14-0 National Champion in 2002, we will become the first 15-0 National Champion this year.
"Our kind of families win a few more football games than others." Coach Hayes
LOL at Washington Huskies, didn't even read that one. PAC is absolute trash.
Stop abandoning the running backs.
