Better Know a Buckeye: Tyreke Smith Brings Elite Athleticism to Defensive End Position Despite Just Two Years of High School Football Experience

Hope to see Tyreke Smith in some limited action (via the new eligibility rule) this season as well - I think he could be another good one off the edge.

I'm not around that much, running exhausted and lost...

Tyreke is one of the true freshmen I'm most excited to see, glad he is a Buckeye!

Seems like a good talent. I imagine he will be coached up and be a major part of a dominant defensive line going forward.

I have no clue, Bd2999.  But IMO he is our largest DL unknown, and that includes his intangible and tangible upside for a guy 'so new to football' [2 years]....

I think Tyreke gets plenty of action this year.  I won't be surprised if his redshirt gets burned.

I wanna know what the rest of his shirt says on the top of this article.

Dude is a beast.

Go get'em Cal Poppy - we are behind you !!

It's not a rivalry .............. it's a wreckoning.

That was a fun day.

Speaking of, did we ever find out what charity saw the proceeds of the shirt sales?

It doesn't matter whether you're the lion or a gazelle-when the sun comes up, you'd better be running.

"I hope I don't get killed for being black today." It's one of the linked articles

IMO few things are worth "getting killed for".

Those are worthy of our discussion and admiration.

Edited: others have already provided the information (I didn't refresh the comments and am slow at pulling the trigger).

I know he wasn't the highest-rated or most polished guy in last year's class, but he's arguably the one I wanted the most. Reading about his family, his character, and his work ethic - he's going to be a great Buckeye.

HS

All of this, particularly his character.

I wouldn't be surprised to see no red shirt. He is young strong and very talented. Much time in a rotation is possible. I am very thankful that he ultimately chose us. He could be very good very early.

Smith's value SKYROCKETED with Cox's departure.

I'll take the Buckeye born & bred.

He could easily be one injury away from major PT. Heaven forbid.

Buckeyes & Blue Jackets.

As was stated in the article multiple times, he’s from California. Not sure that qualifies as born a buckeye. He’s certainly one now, though.

A comparative mystery and development challenge for Smith & his classmates Williams, Friday & JJB behind the years of can't miss Bosas and Young and Jones.  A whole new kind of excitement and a golden opportunity for Coach DJ to ...go from great to Buckeye legend.

The hand moves for a DE of being able to shed a OT's grasp has become a unique talent but at the same time very important. Joey Bosa was the master of getting OT's off his jersey/grasp. I wonder if Urban ever considered bringing in a Tae-Kwan-Do or martial arts instructor to teach the technique.

His name is Larry Johnson.

reminds me, Bonebuck, of when Reynaldo Nehemiah, Chicago Bears WR a while ago, took a ballet class.  He 'experienced' not a few down-vote behaviors....

...unique... if helpful in the mind of the beholder... breeds imitation....

Nothing like that shirt to break the ice with your new teammates

I would imagine that most of his teammates (with a few notable exceptions) have/had no problem with that shirt or its message.

HS
wigmon's picture

What is his message?  does he live in a high crime/low income area because statistics show that would generate the most likely chance for a black teenage male to get killed.  By a long shot.  I'd like to understand Tyrekes frame of reference, but unfortunately, I haven't seen one given.

HS
BuckeyeInDenver's picture

I know better than to take the bait on this one.

HS
wigmon's picture

yeah, I figured the kid wore the shirt to a pretty high profile event and 11w did 2 articles featuring the picture of him in the shirt so must be worth discussing.  If you want to an honest discussion with people about the shirt, you should be prepared to speak about it.  Not saying he isn't, just have no idea his perspective or what he meant by it.  a black person is about 18 times more likely to be killed by another black person than someone of another race.

We graduated from the same high school. Though, the football team wasn’t so good back in my day. Glad to see they’ve made a come up and have produced such ballers like Smith as well as Travis and Jason Kelsey, and Jaylyn Harris.
