Skull Session: Projecting Davon Hamilton, Why Keita Bates-Diop Fell, and an Ohio State Baseball Commit Chooses Michigan Football

Oh how an attitude can change so quickly!  Was feeling down, no overnight BOOMs.  Then I read the portion of DJ's post about the ickigan baseball flip.  Lol!!  Really did.  Maybe at myself though.  There, but by the grace of UFM, we go.

BOOMs or not it will be a great Saturday.  Have fun, be safe.  They will come!

Beat everyone, in every sport, all the time!!!

Great points, Buctor. Happy Saturday to you and yours!

Now, I don't know about y'all, but I have GOT to hear more about Kentucky Governor Ruby Laffoon (circa 1935). Let me say that name one more time, because it's so damn fun to say... Ruby Laffoon.

I now have a new go-to alias whenever I need to sign in somewhere anonymously.

I never bought that whole "We will punish ourselves by not recruiting Micah Parsons anymore" thing.

Super minor violation when done accidentally.  I think the Staff just had a bad feeling about Parsons.

HS

I think we stopped recruiting him when he switched positions to running back. I have to admit, 5 stars at any position should be considered recruit material. Only time will tell.

Danmas nails it regarding the Parsons recruitment.  OSU walked away ...

Why would any top high school football player want to play for a crazy, recently unsuccessful coach like Harbaugh?  That is why their star power has diminished in recruiting.

I am honored to be a Kentucky Colonel. Loved the story.

HS
iowabuckeyes's picture

Growing up, there was a vague story that my dad’s dad, who died years before my parents met, was a Kentucky Colonel. Do you or anyone know a way for me to confirm that? I searched the interwebz and couldn’t find an archived list.

Good luck!

1. The mythopoeia of Harbaugh's recruiting powess continues to crumble.

2. I do not believe Parsons was the only recruit to visit the Gameday set last season. Incredibly, the violation was not for meeting Herbstreit and Eddie George, it was for Fowler and Corso.

Winning is a habit. Unfortunately, so is losing.

The annual Shawn L Martin Summer Trollstice returns.

Remind me again, he is a M...igan fan?

Parsons may be this generation's Lavar Arrington. Ohio State walked away from him, and that's fine.

Go Buckeyes.

I did not know that about Areington. What’s the story? I do know he went to the Giants in ‘06 (?) and played lights out for a few games, tore his acl and retired.

HS
Hovenaut's picture

He was at the end of things by then, think the injury was it. He wasn't a system player, although Gregg Williams tried to get him in line.

Lavar also had a spill on the Beltway while riding a crotch rocket, got pretty dinged up, and the Redskins were done with him by that point.

Great player, but freelanced, and it wasn't good after awhile.

Ahhhh, I thought it was in reference to his recruitment.

I will never forget his rookie year training camp when his mom sat in the stands and berated him. (The VA Pilot covers the Skins and Ravens pretty extensively).

Best of luck to Davon Hamilton. He will earn every second of playing time he gets, with that talented DT group.

HS
KeithByarsRightFoot's picture

The main thing Hamilton has going for him is he's a 1 technique nose tackle with the size to engage the guard and center. As deep as we are, many of our DTs are athletic types well-suited to the 3 technique. That's where the competition will be fiercest. But at the 1, the starter is the supremely talented but undersized BB Landers. There's a ton of snaps out there waiting for the guy who can dig holes in the dirt and jam up the middle.

My concern is that Michael Hill's suspension last year opened a huge window of opportunity for Hamilton, and he couldn't take advantage. He was third in line behind Sprinkle and Landers, and it wasn't particularly close. Here's hoping Davon steps up this year and makes noise at the nose.

So the Robert Ivan Nichols wmd is a strange one to start your Saturday. Assume a dead kid’s identity and stay “hidden” for decades without telling anyone why. And then take your own life, all this after having been a decorated military member? Would love to know what happened with all this, but probably never will.

Here’s to hoping that KBD proves the doubters wrong and can play a little ball in the league. He may not be a superstar, but he should be a player no?

Not even sure what to say about Kentucky or the Colonel at this juncture. Odd is all.

RIP Vinnie Paul.

HS
buckeyeboy68's picture

If we’re being honest with ourselves, KBD isn’t projected to be that productive of a pro to begin with. I don’t understand why we have to call it a “slide” just b/c we wanted him drafted earlier as buckeye fans.

HS
PhillyNut's picture

It's a slide because of the pre draft predictions by school agnostic predictors. Some had him in the mid first round.

I don't buy one goddam drop of gas in the state of Michigan!

HS
Lighteyes's picture

It's not "Buckeye fans" who wanted him drafted earlier, it's the pre-draft mocks. I looked at probably a dozen mock drafts by national writers in the past few days (both directly and via 'mock draft summaries' here and on other sites). Every single one had him being taken somewhere between mid-first round to very early second. And I do mean every single one - this isn't a case where Buckeye fans jumped on one single outlier and draft and ignored the consensus.

The kid's and athlete, and by all accounts a very good baseball player, but he didn't have the rankings nor the offer sheet in football to be be in the mix for the Buckeyes. Mean while up North....

You should also keep in mind at least 50% of NBA general managers are incompetent at their jobs. They had to rewrite the rulebook to stop themselves from giving millions of dollars to unproven high schoolers because everybody became enamored of finding the next LeBron James.

That might be the truest thing Ive ever seen written about the NBA. And to think some people want the 1-and-done rule eliminated.

I think the incompetence level of the NBA general managers is closer to 75%; and for the NFL it’s probably about 50%-60%.

THOSE WMDs. Playing under Woody Hayes, passion for football got Judge William Pollitt Jr. through school...

OK, somebody help me here (DJ? Matt/Remy?).

I'm looking at the official roster for 1968 and can't find judge Pollitt's name on it. What gives?

As a Kentucky native, I'm well familiar with the Colonel designation. While certainly an honor, it's not a rare designation. There are probably hundreds, if not thousands per year. My sister was given one back in the 80's for academic achievements

What, go 3-9? Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

The picture thing is petty. I get the reasoning and where it can lead, including Pryor selling his stuff because he wanted tats. It leads to him selling his stuff that isn't his stuff. But that didn't happen, and that thing that didn't happen is the point of the rule. He took a picture with that nose bleed "Dickie V". So what.

In case any of you, like me, are wondering whether you've got what it takes to become a Kentucky Colonel - it appears we require only a recommendation from one who has already achieved the rank of Kentucky Colonel, followed by approval by the sitting Governor.

Here is a link to non-exhaustive list of our fellow KY Colonels. Notables include Billy Ray Cyrus, Tiger Woods, Kate Middleton, and the original Cake Boss himself, Mr. Duncan Hines.

I think it's more difficult to not be one than to be one if you've spent any amount of time in or around Kentucky.  I was nominated because someone saw me pick up a can off the ground at a truck stop when I was driving through the state several years ago.

Micah Parson's situation might be a little different. Carey wasn't granted access to a fenced off area specifically meant for the media, but the locker room, which is probably just part of the normal official visit. The pic with Vitale is most likely a violation but it's lesser as he wasn't guided to Vitale.

NBA GM's are the worst. Almost all rules are in place to protect themselves from themselves. 1 and done rule, lowered length of contracts, min. salaries allowances based on years in league, you can stretch a bad contract out, after the last contract you got a mulligan on one contract. Awful. Can't trade back to back number 1 picks(Thanks Stepien)
