20 some years ago, Michigan was getting guys from Ohio like Charles Woodson and Desmond Howard. Now they're getting Ohio state's baseball commits. Is this as good as it gets Michigan?

The closest they've gotten to ripping us off recently was Kyle Kalis flipping in 2011 (and that was driven by Tattoogate more than anything). I'm sure Brady Hoke in his own deluded mind felt that scUM had pulled one over on OSU at the time (bolstered by Kalis himself saying he felt more OSU commits were going to jump ship and follow him).

HS
terryin20878's picture

...and he wasn't exactly the most feared lineman in the B1G.  Did fine, but not spectacular.  In the long run, not a huge loss for us.

HS
Dstacify's picture

Agreed. Plus Elflein (who remained loyal to the program even after Tattoogate broke and stuck around) was significantly better than him.

Michigan is one of the greatest programs ever in college football, as long as you include the last 120 years.  Lately, not so much.

I mean, I know Beilein got them to the finals this year (not too many brackets had that happening) but realistically how many years before Holtmann has OSU overtaking them in terms of talent? I'd say a couple of Holtmann's recruiting classes will definitely propel OSU up the national ranks quickly.

11 Strong.

HS
stxbuck's picture

Slow your roll there-hoops and football are very different animals. I don't see Holtman out-coaching or out-recruiting Beilein on the regular. Beilein has scUM as one of the top programs in the country right now, and he hasn't shown he is the type of coach to let standards slip under his watch. Holtman will have tOSU in the tourney, and competitive in the B10, but Beilein will keep scUM rolling in hoops. Talent wise, Meyer has Harbaugh over a barrel. Not the case in the foreseeable future for hoops-tOSU will be one of many competitive programs in the B10, not the top dog like in football.

HS
KevinJ's picture

I thought I saw Holtmann out coach Bellein just last season, once Holtmann gets the talent level up to where it needs to be, Ohio State will do just fine against UM.

HS
Dstacify's picture

Considering Butler was pretty consistently one of the top teams in the country under Holtmann's watch I'd say Holtmann has a very good chance to overtake both Beilein and Izzo in a few years at OSU. He managed to beat both of them in head-to-head matchups this past season with a significantly less talented team. I think OSU will be a Final 4-caliber team in a few years once Holtmann's recruiting classes start coming in and if we have to bury teams like MSU and scUM to get there I have faith Holtmann can do it.

11 Strong.

HS
stxbuck's picture

Consistency. Getting your team to multiple FFs. When Holtman can do that over a period 0f 10-15 years-like Beilein, Izzo, and Matta-all the hype in overwrought fans minds will come true. Until then.........don't let your fantasies get ahead of realities

On the radio a few minutes ago, the 700WLW host had a very wise statement regarding sports fans...."Most fans aren't looking for information, they are looking for affirmation".....I'm in the minority-I don't need affirmation for my fandom.

HS
Dstacify's picture

Matta doesn't deserve to be in the same stratosphere as Izzo and Beilein. Great guy who ran a clean program no doubt but he only got OSU to the FF once in his tenure (with a team he realistically should've won a title with but they choked against Florida). Matta was a good coach, not a great coach IMO.

11 Strong.

HS
Dstacify's picture

No, admittedly I forgot about that season. But that's still only two FF appearances. Nothing to brag about and it certainly doesn't put him on the same level as Izzo. I would not be shocked if Holtmann gets them to more Final Fours than that. Have you forgotten how much Matta struggled as a recruiter towards the end of his run? We were a annual NIT-caliber team before Holtmann got here. I think the fact he took a not incredibly talented team to the NCAA Tourney in his first season definitely bodes well for the future of OSU basketball.

11 Strong.

HS
stxbuck's picture

Get a clue. Shit happens and sometimes it is necessary to make a change. It doesn't detract from the legacy of a coaches accomplishment. I suppose you think that Tom Landry was a horrible coach b/c he too got fired, or Nolan Richardson,or other number of coaches. Don't be a front running fool, get some perspective on legacies.

Spoke to someone at DeSales about this. Talk is TTUN went for this guy in football because he has a friend they hope follows him to TTUN.  Don't know DeSales players that well, though.  Anyone know who another prospect is at Desales that would be more of an elite player that might fit this bill?

EDIT: I should add this guy is a hell of a baseball player.

HS
buckinraleigh's picture

Wow, giving up a precious scholarship to a low 3-star on the off-chance of landing a low 4-star (#297 nationally).  It is amazing how far Michigan football has fallen.  Also amazing that Hairball hasn't been booted yet.

HS
avail31678's picture

Yeh, kinda crazy.  I would have assumed a move like this from Harbaugh would have been to steal him from the Buckeyes, but we haven't offered yet.  Might be a real solid get, though, for some B1G team.

It sucks that OSU lost Joey from a baseball standpoint, though.

HS
Dstacify's picture

If Hairball goes 0 for 3 against OSU, MSU, and PSU again this year I think they'll quickly start burning effigies of him in Ann Arbor. The fact that the guy has failed to develop his own QB from the ground up since he's been there (choosing to take shortcuts and rely on proven transfers from other schools instead) is rather telling that he's not the QB whisperer everyone thinks he is.

My sense of the kid has been that his future is in baseball, but if trying to do both (something that's increasingly rare at elite football schools) is that important to him, then good luck, I guess.

Do one thing exceptionally well, or do two things and be mediocre at both. Looking at the football offer list, can't see him being much more than a special teamer at TTUN. He should focus on baseball.

Velazquez put on a solid performance for defensive coordinator Greg Schiano and linebackers coach Bill Davis, but the staff did not offer

So he choose to "sign" with the school that offered baseball & (their watered down version of) football versus the school that offered baseball did not offer football.

Solid choice, Joey. Best of luck!

Sounds like he's trying to improve his MLB draft stock by showcasing that he's a two sport athlete, although there are some pretty chilly days up north for Michigan college Baseball I would imagine, going south may have been a better option for a college baseball potential star.

Michigan is a good school. He has a great opportunity.

But I would never willingly let my son go there.

HS
stxbuck's picture

If your kid is good enough to get an offer from scUM, he's probably good enough to get an offer from an Ivy League school. If you aren't going to compete for an NC in football, get the elite education.

HS
jpfbucks01's picture

His scholarship at OSU for baseball was almost certainly a partial as they are in baseball so even though in state etc, he was looking at over $10K per year out of pocket where playing even as a back up for UM football means a free ride.

Easy decision really.

HS
AnotherBuckeyefan's picture

Just a counter-argument: one hit in football and his baseball career is over.  No idea if he is good enough to get drafted.

I'm sure it is a hard decision -- do I focus on a sport that gives me a chance at the pros and avoid injury, or do I play a sport that will ensure I graduate with no student loans but much greater chance of injury?

Best of luck to him.

HS
Scooter's picture

Where's the guarantee of graduating from ttun?  Of course, a low 3 star may be the best they get going forward.

Michigan didn't steal anything football wise. They got a kid rated as the 97th best at his position, barely in the top 1000 in his class and not even recruited by the Bucks or any major program. Hopefully he helps Michigan maintain their recent track record.

HS
iowabuckeyes's picture

But he could've played baseball for Ohio State.

Still, as a parent, I have no problems with his decision. I can't find fault with someone who can get a quality education at minimal personal expense. My daughter chose Iowa. It was the best choice for her and I respected it but I also told her it was her choice and Ohio State was my choice and the Buckeyes would never take a back seat to the Hawkeyes. She understood and we always respected each other's boundaries.

You have to go with the full scholarship IMO. Michigan will pay for his education....OSU I assume is offering a partial scholarship.

HS

That is assuming he stays with football all 4 years. As soon as the football stops so does the full ride.

For a kid like this that is weaker in football than baseball, could you "stash" him by declaring him a baseball player for the first year, and then let him come out for football in the spring?  He'd gain an extra season of football eligibility at the back end and would be unlikely to contribute at all this year.

HS
MeatBichigan's picture

I'm guessing that when he came in for his visit the coaches could sense that bit of Michigan sentiment in him and decided that it wasn't worth the risk of him infecting the locker room. We must have a machine to test for that, right?

HS

You know Urb saw the Desales lad play as Nate Meyer played both sports at Watterson. You certainly can't blame the kid for taking a full ride.

Maybe he should call up Kyle Kalis and ask him how his flip worked out ..... Kids, sometimes they just HAVE to take two steps back, before they can take one step forward .... he'll learn ....

HS
65 Toss Power Trap's picture

I saw Kalis play about 4 times in HS at St.Eds. Was one of the best, toughest, meanest OT's I've seen at that level.

Was disheartened when he went to TTUN.

But he never got better. Seemed to regress. They don't develop kids up there like they do at TOSU.

I don't think Kalis got drafted, and I don't even know if he's playing ball anymore.

I’ve been a Buckeye fan for 45 years I’ve always thought we were classy people who supported our beloved Buckeyes. But when I hear grown adults attacking a 17 year old kid it’s sickening the irony here is that kid has more talent, skills and brains than 95% of you. If you ever had a chance to talk to the young you will be surprised how mature he is. But most of you would need a ride from your mom and get permission to leave your basement.
