Ohio State's Defensive Ends Could Be Even More Talented at the Top Than Last Season

Chase Young is going to be a monster.  I don't see QB's getting much sleep the week before facing Bosa/Young.

"Because I couldn't go for three."

Ive been saying the same to anyone who will  listen. Young and Bosa may just punch our ticket to a Natty if our offense is even halfway decent. They will be a major problem and for coaches and will likely make life easier for the secondary.

I think Chase is going to challenge Joey for the top spot. I'm predicting this d-line is going to be crazy dominant.

Joey?

Yes Joey. He is widely regarded as OSU's best DE (recently or maybe all time). I think Chase has the potential to challenge that.

Just to translate the sarcasm- I think you mean Nick (not Joey).

That's cool BH, I was not sure, the post was mostly about the current team.  There have been many good DEs over the years, but Joey would be in the conversation, IMHO.  And if Mr Young lives up to first impressions etc. he too will be in that conversation.

At the very least, it will be a topic that creates a great deal of comments here at 11W!!

Beat everyone, in every sport, all the time!!!

You do realize this "Nick Bosa" persona is just a cover? Joey never left.

HS

That’s why we never saw them both playing at the same time!

Jones and Landers are more experienced and with the young studs coming in we are probably deeper inside than we were last year...  so that's going to be the biggest difference.  those boys will have more one on one opportunities

can't wait!

I've said it before and I'll say it again...our d-line this season will be better than last season. Our interior is extremely deep and our ends are elite. I also hope to see Tyreke Smith get some meaningful snaps.

HS

Going into last season I thought our DL was going to be awesome, and i was right, but it seemed that the lackluster play from the LBs diminished that play, especially vs. OU. Against the Sooners our DL was rendered largely ineffective. The LBs need to rebound this season in order to make our DL truly dominant.

Yeah the LBs are the one concern I have and Davis has yet to prove his worth.

The depth of talent at DT is going to allow the DE to have a lot of 1 on 1 match ups they will exploit.

Looking forward to watching Cooper and Cornell becoming household names

Great article Kevin, DL is gonna be ferocious this year

Side note: Seeing that header pic, I STILL can't believe how badly tOSU dismantled Sparty last season. I was so nervous before that game, especially with what happened in Iowa City the week prior, and they came out and blew the doors off. Was watching with my buddy who was in town for a concert and he couldn't believe we were still watching the game mid-way thru the 3rd (I never turn if off early no matter the score, Brian!)

Young will tare it up first several games due to double teams on Bosa. But then teams will start doubling up both the DE's allowing our young and talented DT's to get into the games come B1G play starts. It's going to be FUN to watch it play out!

HS

Little Big Bear and The Predator as bookends with Dremont and maybe Togiai the Pacific Island Nightmare in the middle. Guys like Cooper coming off the bench and in 3 DE sets. My god, it's going to be horrific for opposing offenses...

A man got to have a code...

HS

Togiai will get some snaps this year but no way he is jumping ahead of landers and Garrett, the staff has been high on Hamilton as well

Usually offensive schemes have to plan around 1 dominant defensive player, but with Bosa, The Predator and Dre'mont, who do you choose to double team.  Has to be a nightmare to make a game plan.

Gameplans still gotta be centered on Bosa, right?

Chase is a nightmare in the pass game, but there was an article on here about not keeping run gaps. Hoping he messes up is not a good plan, but short of 'hi, we have had top 5 recruiting classes for the last 4 years,' it's the best you're gonna get.

For the line, at least. Still yet to be seen whether we can Cover A Tight End At All.

HS

Let's hope the DB's gel quickly and give the DL beasts that extra half second to get into the backfield.  I would not want to game plan against this bunch.

I’m as high on the Little Bear/Predator combo as anyone, but we know they’re going to rotate (not as much as last year I presume). But OTs are going to be tiiiiiiired as hell and I’m predicting a breakout campaign for Coop.

I think Ohio State does not have a pair of starting DE's.

There's a starting rotation, and it's been deadly the past few years.

HS

And this will be very important this year as the Silver Bullets inexpeirenced linebacking corps get up to snuff.

The DEs are incredible, likely the best in the nation.  The interior linemen are incredible too.  I expect a bounce back year from the LBs and the DBs will continue to churn out first round picks.  Yes, this defense is going to be incredible.

HS
BuckeyeCrusdader's picture

Unfortunately this won't matter if the Linebackers are out of position and undisciplined. The other safety spot is also of concern.

The talent is there to be a downright nasty defense.

HS
mmp15f's picture

You're right about the linebackers. I'm more worried about linebackers than any other position group, but for some reason I feel like they'll end up being just fine. We saw steady improvement over the course of the season last year and, like you said, the talent is definitely there

HS

The game plan against us will be a quick passing game.  Press coverage will be the key to success.

HS
RunEddieRun1983's picture

I think Young and Bosa are more talented player vs. player than last year's squad, but man we will miss that depth for sure. Players who haven't had to really step into that role will get a crash course. Sink or swim!

Urban Meyer left an incredible legacy. 12/4/18 Ryan Day begins his.

HS
Homey1970's picture

The national consensus is Clemson’s DL is tops in the nation. I believe it’s only a matter of time (reps) before the Buckeyes show the country what most of us believe.

I just hope that Bosa and Young don’t hurt themselves with the constant number of meetings they’ll be having in the opponents’ offensive backfields.

Chase young got a lot of meaningful PT last season. He played during the first half (sometimes even first quarter) of several games. All these articles say no one besides bosa has meaningful experience but I just don't think that's the case. Obviously he didn't play as much as he other four, but he played a lot.

You had barbecue back there? And you didn't invite me? HURT! MY! FEELINGS!

HS

Young is gonna be one of those players where O Line guys are complaining because he's too quick to cover. They can't double team everyone.

No more Hubbard, Lewis, Holmes and all the talk/speculation that OSU will be better.........I obviously understand why many think this but I will take a wait and see.

Hopefully no injuries cause we aren't deep at end.

What is everyone's opinion on what the rushmen package will be/who it will feature? I think Bosa, Young, and Cooper will be in on every 3rd and long, and I think the fourth member might rotate between Dre'Mont Jones and Jashon Cornell

HS
Kevin Harrish's picture

The prevailing belief is that it will be Bosa, Cooper, Jones and Young. Cornell is more of a bruiser at defensive end and less of a quick pass rusher.

Trebor40's picture

I agree, not surprising as your group have a tremendous level of insight on the team!

I would go farther and state that against power running teams we will actually see Bosa/Cornell more than Bosa/Young! I believe with this alignment the speed of our outside LB's will cover up their issues!

I would rather be on hand with 10 men then elsewhere with 10,000 - Timur Lenk

HS
Steelydan54's picture

I'm hoping that we don't continue the "rushmen" package w 4 DE's now that we have such highly rated and talented DT's available to us. I like that big push up the middle and quick guys like Landers create sacks for themselves and others by disruption. Gives the tackles an opportunity to make plays they haven't had last couple years, we could go rushmen once in a while just to freak out the opposing O line.

Steelybuck54

HS
Dstacify's picture

Hubbard and Lewis were very solid anchors at DE and Holmes always had a knack for getting to the QB on Rushmen downs (although he tended to perform best on limited snaps). But I think Chase Young will be better than any of those guys. He and Bosa could be the best duo of DEs OSU has ever seen and I'm looking forward to seeing them play together this fall. The fact that we have highly touted recruits like Javontae Jean-Baptiste, Tyler Friday, and Tyreke Smith waiting in the wings just makes our future at DE that much brighter.
