I hope we can get an All Ohio classic sometime in the near future with Dayton, Xavier, and Cincinnati.
Agreed. 4 team bracket with a 3rd place game for the losers.
I don’t get it. 4 games over a 2 week period and we give it a name?
Yeah, first glance thought the dates had to be wrong. Not sure how a bunch of games over a 10+ day period make something a "classic"..
IIRC, there's something about several teams all playing each other in round robin fashion that makes it a "tournament," allowing the teams (under NCAA rules) to play more total games than if they were just scheduled individual games. If you have a tournament you have to give it a name. Ohio State has done this frequently in pat years. NCAA rules always make a lot of sense.
Are the other teams playing one another?
I believe so. At least that's the way it worked in the past. a tournament champion gets named and everything.
But wouldn't a tournament need a championship game? You could have teams end up tied with best record in the "classic"...
My mistake - it's not a "tournament" but a "Qualifying Regular-Season Multiple-Team Event." (see BuckeyeBig2012's post below). Only the NCAA can dream up such nonsense.
Of course, even in a round-robin Qualifying Regular Season Multiple Team Event, you could still have a champion when two teams tie by making the head-to-head result the tiebreaker, but that's unlikely to be needed, since the event usually has 1 or 2 good teams, with the rest being cupcakes.
It is odd, isn't it? The NCAA gives schools a choice of playing 27 games or 29 games if you participate in a (get this for NCAA-speak) Qualifying Regular-Season Multiple-Team Event. Check the schedules for other top programs and you'll find plenty of these classics set up to get a few extra games under NCAA rules.
Liking where this is going !
I knew things would change when Holtmann took over.
Go get'em Cal Poppy - we are behind you !!
It's not a rivalry .............. it's a wreckoning.
Is this really that much different than last years non conference schedule, which was put together by Matta?
Yeah and I think we will see more of these types of schedules in the future. Love em or hate em but Tom Izzo knows what he's doing with his pre-B1G conference each and every year.
How? We played Gonzaga, Stanford, Butler, Clemson, and UNC last year. This years schedule doesn't look much (or any) better unless you really like some of the cupcakes.
Matta scheduled cupcakes. This year it's Holtman's schedule. So it has to be tougher. Just because.
Ohio State has history with all these teams with the exception of PUFW?
Samford in '08
Cleveland State in '09
SCST in '15
I'm not around that much, running exhausted and lost...
Thanks, Hove. All wins with the closest being a 13-point margin over CSU.
Have any of these teams ever beaten OSU?
Our honor defend, so we'll fight to the end !
Not to my knowledge, and wasn't sure they had played Cleveland State.
I haven’t been to St John Arena since 92 vs #5 UNC
Dick Vitale did the game and I heckled him the whole time ... I was still mad he ran his yap about Funderburke fouling that flopping midget Bailey from Indiana... luckily I’ve mellowed in my old age ..
but I’ll argue to my grave Bailey flopped
Life long fan of... The!
I'm really confused. You're talking about a game against UNC and mentioning Damon Bailey as the same game? Btw, I hated Bailey too.
"We gotta go win this next game and make the State of Ohio proud!"-UFM
The OSU bs IU game was the year before ...
I was still mad at Dick for making a huge deal about it
so I heckled him .. sorry for the confusion
Ah gotcha. No worries...I confuse easily
Mr. and Mrs. Vitale nailed it, when they named their son "Dick".
Three things cannot be long hidden: the sun, the moon, and the truth.
Not much of a classic if you ask me.
How can something be a classic if it has never happened before, and especially with what appears to be 4 severely overmatched opponents? I might be the only one bothered by that, but it just seems like they could have picked a name that is a little more appropriate. The Columbus Invitational, Buckeye BBall Blowout, The Tune Up, lots of options other than the overused "classic".
I have to admit I was excited to see the headline. Thinking that they finally worked it out and got a tournament agreement set up for the major college basketball programs in Ohio to play each other every year. I would have had less issue with the name in that case, because that could actually be entertaining.
Slowly slowly. The reality that we play UCinn this year is huge in itself. In state with much to be gained, or lost, with regards to recruiting future Ohio players. I think, given the experience factor of this years team, best to chill on a grandiose all Ohio tourney.
I am excited to watch the game in St. John Arena. I predict it will be a sellout.
Did the scheduler previously work for Nick Satan? This is an embarrassment! I hope they are giving season ticket holders the option of not buying these games. All those praising this should keep quiet about other's cupcake schedules.
Find me another mahor college basketball program (including Michigan State) that doesn't play multiple cupcakes in the non-conference part of their schedule.
I play, coach stays. He goes, I go.
Interesting...a tournament with no TV coverage.
