Skull Session: Why Dre'Mont Jones Returned to Ohio State, Damon Arnette's Attention to Detail, and John Simon Switches Positions

Let's all take a moment to thank ourselves for having the sense to be fans of Ohio State

Sense had nothing to do with it. It was ingrained in me from the second I was born. Just like it was for my dad, and just like it is for my son. There was never a choice to make in regards to my fandom. I didn't choose Buckeye Nation, Buckeye Nation chose me.

Kudos to Mr. Jones for his decision to return.  It is becoming more obvious the UFM is not just coaching X's and O's, but is teaching his players about life.

Too much time spent at the North Heidelberg rather than the classroom. SSD 68-72

Jones electing to come back was a really nice added element to a team with a ton of talent in 2018. DT has been a ? The last couple years but now it’s going to bastard a titanic sized strength this year

Urban Meyer left an incredible legacy. 12/4/18 Ryan Day begins his.

The Dremont story struck me too. Now it’s getting close and I need to lay down some plans.

does anyone know when the alumni ticket purchase date is on ticketmaster ? Usually it’s some time in July but I can’t remember.

HS
Buctor's picture

OSU website says for "Sustaining or Life Members" it's 10 AM on 26 June.  Good luck!!!

After the 29th, the "General Public" can begin making purchases on Ticketmaster.  They the same as above for alumni.

Beat everyone, in every sport, all the time!!!

HS

Thanks Buctor - I hope you had already consulted the site for your own purposes rather than to have to do the legwork for my www challenged ass.

HS

I hadn't, but it was more for satisfying my curiosity.

Besides, pay it forward is a common theme here, right?

Beat everyone, in every sport, all the time!!!

HS
BuckInNashville's picture

Great point - maybe I’ll have an opportunity to pay it forward through the ticket purchase process or maybe some way on a game day !

i have a strange confidence about this team this year. I know there are a lot of unknown areas : new CBs , new O linemen, LBs, and QB. But I have this feeling that teams won’t be able to move the ball at all.  I don’t mean just a solid top 3 Big Ten defense, I mean like Alabama unstoppable defensive line.

HS
Buctor's picture

Is there irony involved in having enough maturity to recognize you need more maturity.  Or is it simply that most of us always need more maturity?

Anyway, recognizing the need for more is not something many have recognized at any age, much less in their early twenties.

Can't help but be excited about an improved Dre'Mont Jones.  This should be a really fun year.  And it just keeps getting closer to the first game day by day!!!

Beat everyone, in every sport, all the time!!!

Hodges should know what goes around comes around. Throwing shade at your former employer is not a wise thing to do, especially when you know how that ex-employer can make you look pretty silly.

It’s a Twitter war: all swagger, no blood, no foul. He’s trying to get Purdue noticed and what better way than to raise it Ohio State’s level? If you want to announce yourself as the new badass in school, you don’t pick on the weak, you punch the biggest bully in the nose. I mean, does anyone think he’s going to help the Boilermakers get any street cred by picking on Indiana or Illinois? If Pantoni is smart, he won’t take the bait. This is the response Hodges looking for from the audience he’s most interested in reaching:

I don't even see the point of Eron's tweet. Schools like Purdue and MSU offer 3 star kids out of Ohio early all the time, in hopes they will turn into 4 star talent later.

Wow, DJ - those WMD’s today! Is there anything out there in the world that’s truthful, or is everyone just making shit up as they go? I’ve actually suspected this for years...

The only thing that's new in the world is the history that we have forgotten.

HS
MichiBuck12's picture

I too have long suspected everyone of just making shit up as we go along. Unfortunately, those tasked with spreading information to the masses are also tasked with attracting as many readers/viewers/listeners as possible. And often times I think those two responsibilities are contradictory to each other.

"Everything is not OK" is a bit frightening.  Don't know much about hockey.  But head trauma issues are rampant in multiple sports.  There are many, many really wise people.  Surely someone can at the very least mitigate much of this?  Probably naive on many levels.

That write up hit home a little. I never played anything professionally, but I lost a whole half of football in college once, where I was out there playing on autopilot. I “came to” mid-4th qtr; I don’t remember halftime or us scoring. I know I was out on the field. Film proved that. Never bothered me when I was 22, I was invincible. But now 10 years later (combined with other concussions in HS and my early 20s), it does concern me some. I got laid off last summer, and it was so easy to let my mind go into some really dark places when left to my own devices. I space out sometimes. I worry about my short term memory sometimes. Like I said, I didn’t get punched in the face or play hockey for a living, but head trauma is scary stuff.

Go Bucks!!

First, I hope your employment situation has improved and that you are now back at work at a place you enjoy.  Second, do not underestimate the impact of those hits.  People do not have to be playing at the pro or top collegiate level to have the hits they absorb lead to permanent damage.  Get checked out physically and mentally.  If there is one thing I hope we are all learning it is that asking for help is not a sign of weakness, it is just being smart and caring.  Even those who seem to have it all are not immune to these challenges.

1. Hodges is now chatelaine of a school whose coach famously told OSU to "Get used to it." They didn't and he was soon gone.

2. I really hope Jody Shelley is OK. He does a fine job as color commentator for the CBJ.

Winning is a habit. Unfortunately, so is losing.

That Lifespan of a Lie article is a good one. Recognizing that the Professor may have cultivated the aggressive attitude among the guards, I might hesitate before dismissing the experiment as irrelevant. I don’t think it too far a stretch to imagine prison wardens promoting the same, or similar, attitudes among their own guards.

Waiting for a documentary on this one.

"Because I couldn't go for three." - Woody Hayes

HS
EvanstonBuckeye's picture

Great point. The experiment, warts and all, still raises questions about role-playing as professional practice: "Fake it till you make it" gone awry. At the same time, the professor's retort, "The defense is its longevity" is a deeply disturbing take on our society.

That Nick Boynton wmd is frightening as hell. If that is how things go in hockey, just imagine what we have not heard about in football with positions like linebacker. Scary stuff.

DreMont and the rest of the line will terrorize every opponent this season, and it will be really enjoyable to watch.

The Boynton story reminds me a lot of Bob Probert. I'm sure you're familiar with him, but if you haven't read his book, I highly recommend it.

HS
blueblazer22's picture

Definitely remember Probert. As a Blackhawks fan, some huge battles with him and Detroit back in the day. Have to say it was a little weird when he became a member of the Hawks, since he was for so long an adversary, but always enjoyed watching him play. And in Chicago he wasn’t a goon by any stretch-scored goals and played some straight up good hockey. I will make a note to check out his tome, once I finish my current John Wooden book.

I commend Nick Boynton for his courage, and wish him well in raising awareness to mental health/head trauma in the NHL.

Yeah. But I’m a bit less concerned about the DBs this year than the LBs. I would love it if Tuf could come back sooner, but there are just too many questions as of now.

A-The Hodges thing-who cares. Every recruit has to come from somewhere. Given that Young will likely wind up as a DE or OLB, it just shows how the staffs at tOSU and Purdue are far more aware of recruits than us fans sometimes want to give them credit for.

[mod edit - no politics]

HS
MichiBuck12's picture

There have been a few high profile instances in the last few years of school districts trying to lower crime rates by implementing alternative disciplinary programs leading to tragedy. I get what they're trying to do, but as is typical, they aren't addressing the real problem. If 50 kids get beat up every year, and you stop reporting that to the police and having the perpetrators charged in favor of some alternative discipline, you might be able to report that violent crime went down, but theres not fewer kids getting beat up. As you said, bureaucrats are generally more concerned with the numbers than the results.

HS
EvanstonBuckeye's picture

As a middle school administrator, I get what they're trying to do, too. Here would be my suggestions:

1. Combine the approach of student-driven services (social work, peer mediation) with a bedrock of a transparent discipline system (this many referrals=detention, suspension, etc.).

2. Be willing to reflect on the success of your systems as well as to support teachers. Students respect flexibility, but not weakness and will definitely see when their teachers are being hung out to dry.

HS

Not complaining about the edit, but shouldn't mods have some consultation with the staff if the staff is going to link an overtly political article?

If that sounds like an exaggeration, it’s not much of one. According to the handbook, before referring a student to the dean, “the following documentation must be included: Student Misconduct Form, Family Telephone Log, Intervention Log, Witness Statements.” Pichardo should have been the fifth recourse: The staff handbook “defines the order in which staff should address these issues: 1. Teacher, Student; 2. Teacher, Student, Advisor (Dean If Appropriate); 3. Advisor, Dean, Parent, Student; 4. Guidance Counselor, Dean, Parent, Student (In Certain Cases); 5. Assistant Principal, Parent, Student; 6. Principal, Parent, Student.”

Furthermore, “Before any referral is made, the teacher should have followed the step [sic] below: Intervention Strategies, Conference with Students, Warnings, Called parent/guardian, Conference with parent/guardian.” For all these matters, “teachers MUST have the appropriate documentation. Teachers should be keeping anecdotal [records] on a regular basis, telephone logs, parental conference logs, intervention forms, and all other relevant documentation.”

I faced this paperwork blizzard also when I was in the classroom. Is it any wonder why prospective college grads won't even look at the profession of public school teacher any more?

Don’t be duped by the high school psychology behind Hodges’ tweet or you’ll fall into the trap he’s trying to set. A major rule in politics is that the candidate leading in the polls should never respond to one in the back of the pack because it legitimizes him as an equal. Same rule applies here. If Hodges wants the world to think Purdue is Ohio State’s peer because they got a local kid we didn’t want, let him. When they snake someone like Zach Harrison, then it’ll be time to worry.
