And get aboard the MackTruck. Hopefully we see that connection a lot this year (minus the injury).
What about the Martell cartel?
I'm not going to miss stopping at QBgeddonville...
(knocks wood, to near destruction of knuckles)
Hindsight is, and in, 2020
Seeing Tate in there for packages will add another dimension to their already stacked arsenal. Wilson and Meyer have both excelled with that sort of weaponry.
If this team finds it's legs and chemistry early, look out.
I'm reminiscent of '95, '05,...'15 (now with a unified offensive direction!)
Have a feeling we're going to like college football this season.
Cant wait to see Tate run the zone read with Dobbins or Webber after they've already gashed the defense a few times and commit to stopping them and forget about Tate. CANT WAIT ( BART SCOTT VOICE)
I don't see how this will be any advantage for our offense? Tate comes in teams know he is running the ball?? He is horrible as a passer.
What good is a QB who can't run the offense 100% of the time? IMHO in this offense Haskins is a liability!
Run Pass Option with Martell. He has the ability to throw a quick bubble screen if needed. Teams knew the zone read was coming plenty of times in the past but may not have been disciplined enough to stop it. All about execution and a good read by the QB even if they anticipate its coming.
Gatorade National Player of the Year = Horrible Passer
To you and the author, who wrote, "It is clear that the Buckeyes have at least some kind of plan for Martell to play meaningful reps in 2018."
The plan? Keep Martell healthy.
TBDSNITL: The best damn screen name in the land!
Can Dwayne stay healthy? That was the question his whole HS career. Also no more hiding behind JT, schools will have tape on him and his game will be picked apart. His weakness exposed. Can he handle the job full time? This team will go as he goes! We have no other option, Tate Martel is not a Big Ten caliber QB, if Dwayne goes down this team this year is screwed!
One step closer to the #BaldwinBus, folks.
Baldwin taking snaps and handing off to Demario McCall? Sign me up. Only problem with that is nobody will know which of the two to put on their Heisman ballot.
Is Baldwin going to be ready for full-go this fall?
Ohio by birth, BUCKEYE by the grace of God!
Baldwin at 50% > 95% of D1 QB's
Do people really think he's gonna be that good? I mean I sure hope he is, but I literally have no clue what to expect of him.
Based on his highlight video, he's very reminiscent of Baker Mayfield minus the antics. Seems to have an uncanny ability to extend the play and make something out of nothing. Arm seems strong enough and running ability is definitely there. I'll wait until garbage time play to confirm my thoughts on this though.
One more speed bump out of the way for the #BaldwinBus.
Things should be a bit quieter, but now the onus is on Haskins. I think he is up to the task. He's got a great supporting cast! Let's go Bucks!
You Got Barbecue Back There!?!?!?!
Dwayne be excited it’s his offense now.
Just posting and hoping my comment isn’t deleted.
Dwayne Wayne.. Dwayne Haskins.. I like your style lol, not sure how many people here can appreciate that meme lol
Loved that show growing up.
I remember the show, but I'm still in a state of cognitive dissonance about all things Cosby.
Cosby? Sorry wrong urban sitcom lol
Dwayne started off with the Cosbys. He had a crush on Denise and later ended up with Whitley (sp) on A Different World, a Cosby spin-off.
Right Urban Sitcom(s).
It's a Cosby show spinoff.
Yeah, I mix all those "urban sitcoms" up. Maybe you and I can meet up at Hillman (totally a real place - look at how many unrelated TV characters attended!) and I'll buy you a beer.
I saw enough in TTUN to think this is the best answer.
It's not a rivalry .............. it's a wreckoning.
Seattle Sounders 2019 MLS Champions
Tough to start someone over a kid who showed out on the biggest stage like Haskins did.
Sorry, but a little over a quarter of football last season isn't enough to convince me he was the better QB ..... good thing you didn't bring up his game against Illinois when Urban had to yank him. Burrow was the better of the two - right now, but he's gone, so I'll throw my support behind the new starter.
If you recall, Burrow was also inserted that game and then pulled due to an inability to move the ball and they went back to JT.
Canuk, the part you missed wuz beating the bastards is paramount to some of us. D.H.already has a spot in our hearts, forever. And, he might get to 4 & 0 against them!!!!!!!!
I agree it's possible; but, haskins won't be around that long - the nfl will be calling him before that happens.
canukbuck, you have doubts about haskins? what about last year - take a look at jt barrett against OK last year. or how about that gem up in iowa. then, there's the wisky big title game where barrett was the only reason we didn't win by 30. and, don't forget Michigan - where we won BECAUSE of haskins saving another bad barrett performance.
sorry, I'm very convinced. i'll get back to you when we're getting ready for the playoffs.
I aim to misbehave.
I'll be convinced when we win the Big Ten and are making the playoff, anything else is a failure. Haskins is all hype right now, the Michigan game was the coaches inserting a backup and calling a et of plays for a back up. That performance in on the coaches and Haskins made the little safe throws he was called on to make, can he do it when this is his team and teams have tape on him? Who knows. We have ZERO DEPTH right now! Martel is not a BIG TEN Championship QB he is a gimmick! I think Baldwin whiil have Haskins job by next year
Burrow was the better of the two? That’s like saying Taurian Washington was better than Santonio Holmes. If you don’t get the reference look it up Buckeye fan.
If Burrow was actually the better of the two, Meyer would have named him the starter already. Unless you think we know more than the entire coaching staff based on them taking turns playing back up last season.
And please don't cite the last two passes of the spring game as definitive proof.
At least the picture moving forward is clear. Now the critical thing is to avoid the I word.
Goddamn it. We still don’t talk about the woodshed.
I'm late hopping on it. But I'm 100 percent on the Dwayne Train!!! Go Bucks!!!
Zone6, with rotating WR's, will have 1000+ yards at all 3 WR positions this season
I’m with you. I was pulling for Burrow, but now I am 100% on the Dwayne Train as well. I’m actually pretty psyched now we have a clearer picture and can rally behind a QB.
Hope we get thru the season healthy and utilize all of our talent on offense.
Enjoying daily the back to back ttun beatdowns.

Harbaugh on the sidelines, behind Haskins' shoulder.
GET USED TO IT, BRAH.
The other effect of the transfer is that the coaches now have to get Baldwin ready to play, to the extent he's able physically. No doubt he will redshirt unless he has to play, but he's now one bit of bad luck away from being the primary backup.
The most "loud mouth, disrespect" poster on 11W.
Churned this one out quickly, James - have it on reserve just in case? :)
I'm excited to see what happens. Sad to see JB go, for sure, but excited about being rid of a QB controversy for the first time in what seems like years.
Me thinks we just locked up a Playoff birth and likely another natty!
Get onboard fellas
If "Zone 6" actually improves some....... Get the ball to McCall!!!
yea. if McCall is healthy, he HAS to get the ball.
Yeah. Haskins, Martell, Weber, Dobbins, McCall, Campbell, Hill, Mack Attack, Ruckert (maybe).
Urbs, Wilson, Day and company have a big, juicy Thurmanator in front of them, with a knife and fork.

The clarity will be good for summer workouts and for the coaches in developing offensive packages. I'm simultaneously very sad and very excited. Dwayne Haskins, the keys to the bus are yours.
As much as I love Martell having packages, is it smart to run your backup QB?
One mystery to me is why kamikaze pilots wore helmets.
Lost in all of the "we'll be alright" rhetoric in this thread is the realization that we are down to Haskins.....with Martell as the back-up. A back up that is clearly not ready and does not have the physical gifts (arm) to lead this team if needed. If you thought this was a one-dimensional O under JT Barrett, yikes, you better think again. Not hating on Tate at all -- lots of talent and heart, but also lots of limitations at this point in time. Better hope "Simba" stays healthy.... to state the obvious.
This is not a good day, folks, but one we have to live with. I simply will not sugar coat what Burrow's departure means to a program whose QBs have had a shelf life that has its limits ....and a relatively young line that is banged up.
Step off the ledge. OSU will be just fine.
Not on a ledge at all, just pointing out a justified concern(and an opinion) in the midst of some downvotes. It's OK, I'll be fine too.
I'm not convinced that Tate has as poor of an arm that everyone seems to think. I do understand the concern, but as we all learned in Stats 101, we have very little evidence to support the claim that he isn't a good passer without a larger sample size, and until we have more film, it's probably best we refrain from labeling him as "one dimensional".
The concern is justified, I'm just not convinced it's reality. Carry on.
Tate's issues are exaggerated, sure, but sample size is more for SRS than talent evaluation. You don't need to watch me bowl 30 frames to recognize that I'm not a pro, and you don't need much more than we saw in the Spring Game to see that Tate's arm isn't as good as Haskins'.
I don't think its much of a concern. Sure its possible both are QB's could get injured, but that doesn't happen often. There are other things more important to think about for our team. Like who will step up on the O-line, at corner to help replace Ward, will we get better linebacker play, etc.
Didn’t Maryland lose three QBs to injury recently?
Yes I know they lost Pigrome and Kasim Hill. But that’s my point I’m sure they were probably the only team in the FBS to have both their top 2 QB’s get injured for the whole season early in the season. We can’t go around worrying all the time about a scenario like that. It just doesn’t make sense to do that.
it wasn't just fans that thought we were too one dimensional - opposing defenses did too. did you not notice every defense we faced had 8 or 9 in the box? nobody respected our ability to throw the ball further than 7 or 8 yards off the line of scrimmage - haskins changes that. I do get what you're saying about lack of a quality backup...for right now. but, this is the way it works. no way were we going to keep both guys. and I think our qbs being hurt is a reflection on the way they play. the one qb that didn't get hurt for us?....cardale. why? he's a guy who will throw the ball before running. haskins is the same type of guy. burrow leaving doesn't change the fact that injuries happen; but, I look for haskins to have a great season and the buckeyes to be back in NC hunt again.
this is true but a true dual threat qb is important for urbans system and it forces them to defend another gap.
Cardale was also unbelievably strong, so much so that he went head to head with D-Linemen and none of us were truly worried that we had no true back up if he got hurt!
I would rather be on hand with 10 men then elsewhere with 10,000 - Timur Lenk
Not a good day indeed, but we can respect that Burrow was able to make the best decision for his own future (which I truly believe will extend into the next level). While this makes our QB room smaller, it also allows Haskins to take the needed 85% of 1st team snaps going forward. The precision that we will see from the offense because of that will be apparent very quickly.
Truthfully, I don't think the backup is as necessary in a Haskins lead offense, since he won't likely be running 10+ times a game like the previous few. What I'd like to see is Day and Wilson showing him Cardale highlights; ie, scan the field and run if no one is open. But, show him where Cardale should've gone down or OB to avoid injury.
I will pound and pound you until you quit
- Woody Hayes
I won't believe the QB run won't be obsessed over again by Urban next season until I see it for myself. And I certainly hope it's not because it doesn't play to Haskins' strengths at all. So hopefully Haskins being the guy means Meyer is going to sit back and let Wilson and Day take more control of the offense and mold it into a pro style set (like Herman did during the Natty run with Cardale in 2014).
We really don't know how good or bad Martell's arm is. He made some good passes that were dropped in the spring game, and with a full camp as primary backup he will continue to improve.
You have to, simply to avoid losing him to transfer as well. While you run the risk of injury, it is better than losing him mentally and seeing him walk out the door and having no solid options behind Haskins.
You also have to for recruiting. Plenty of other coaches will just sell it to future QBs that OSU is a "one QB school" so if you want to see the field don't go there.
Well said Grega. This seems like a steep gamble, but then again, this can’t completely surprise the OSU staff. Which now brings into light the fact that OSU is heavily recruiting QBs outside of Gunnell.
As long as they can survive this season without injury, they will be fine. One injury means they are in trouble. A second could be catastrophic.
Have mentioned before that if Burrow transfers, it leaves (currently) one healthy back-up. Unfortunately, this most assuredly will limit the number of Martell "packages" you will see this fall. I'm still a huge Martell fan, so nobody is more upset than me about this most recent development. That being said, we can all agree the writing seemed to be on the wall for some time now. So,....time indeed for the Dwayne Train! Good luck Joe, wherever you land.
Begun the Haskins era has
HEY URBAN.... NOW LET'S THROW THAT DAMN BALL AROUND THIS FALL!!

"Vision without execution is just hallucination."
I’m just glad that, in all likelihood, a repeat of 2015 won’t happen. Hope to see Burrow land a starting spot somewhere and Haskins lead the Buckeyes back into the playoffs.
This is definitely where I parked my car.
No debate? Whatever... but I'm dying on my sword on this one. Martell spring game issues were out of his control or a bad sample. Dude can pass. and run. He will win out.
I'll be here in September taking my lumps if I'm wrong. But I'm dying on my sword today. Martell for the start.
Buckshots... in case you have amnesia.
It's amazing how easily seemly everyone t forgetting that Tate Martell was the Gatorade National Player of the Year. Also the young man CAN throw, again did we forget about the internet and YouTube?? I'm 100% behind both QB's. Been with Dwayne Haskins since he was in high school, I made my wife watch Tate Martell play in high school on TV, including the game against St. Thomas Aquinas where Trevon Grimes tore up his leg. Back off the Tate hate. Feel salty about losing Burrow?? You'll feel worse losing Martell. Special talent.
Veni, Vidi, Vici. I came, I saw, I conquered.
The Buckeye Way
How many nights did you have to sleep on the couch for making your wife watch a high school football game on TV with you?
I'm very lucky and blessed to say that not one time. She is as much a fan as I am, if not more. Probably is louder than I am sometimes. Now if she has to work and can't watch the game on TV, I have to pray to God YouTube has the game posted or that could be a rough night!! She's also an avid Cowboys fan.
This is a man clearly willing to die at the point of his own sword. No dv from me.
good luck to joe burrow. it took a lot for him to have to watch behind barrett for so long. now, to the present. I'm very excited to see classic buckeye football: beat the defense senseless with our run game and then crack it's skull open with the deep ball. we FINALLY have a qb with a great arm again......no more looking at 8 and 9 man fronts against us.
Bucks have put all their eggs in one basket. Now watch the basket.
I am not very smart, but I recognize that I'm not very smart. --- W.W. Hayes
Man a Haskins vs Burrow CFB playoff showdown would be epic!
My excitement for this season can be measured in words. once the transfer news broke, my gf instantly texted me and asked "Should I make plans to be in Dallas September first? Damn right you should lol
Don't know why you & your girl friend would want to be in Dallas September 1. TCU is 9/15 and the CFP Playoff is 12/29. Although I would prefer Dallas, OSU could also go to the Orange Bowl.
Winning is a habit. Unfortunately, so is losing.
Well if you must know.. I have a client in Dallas and going to stay there for two weeks until the game
Sorry to pry. Start saving now as I expect the TCU tickets to be inflated. Unless you can charge them off as a business expense. Just didn't want you showing up on the wrong weekend.
Now the hardest work begins -- being a focused and controlled TEAM LEADER. You've had a great example/teacher in JT Barrett AND Joe Burrow.
Go Bucks! Practice well, play well and WIN!
Stay golden, Ponyboy.
all of a sudden too much of a good thing has become a worryingly lack of depth at a key position.....in a blink of an eye...buckeye that is.
I agree. All of a sudden, we're thin at that position.
"If you're not changing, you're falling behind."
In the end, success will be measured in how well the other Buckeyes make plays.

I think this is a hell of a lot more risky for Burrow than he is letting on. Moving on to a team that doesn't know you, and has nothing invested in you, with an unfamiliar offensive scheme and unfamiliar terminology, with unfamiliar receivers is not a guarantee of success. I hope that the kid kicks ass out there, but when is the last time we made it through a whole season with one QB? I am happy that Haskins won't be looking over his shoulder all season, but it is statistically likely (knock on wood) that Burrow would have gotten quality minutes sometime in the next two years.
And I didn't like the way we did Danny Clark two years ago, and I like it even less today. Another redshirt freshman with two sets of spring practices would be pretty valuable right now.
Most wise comment on thread.....
Define success. He's got a better chance of success by playing. I don't think anyone disagrees with that.
I never understood the "looking over his shoulder" concerns. If a guy isn't focused on the team on the other side of the football and just playing as best he can, then he shouldnt' be out there in the first place. I am not saying players haven't used it as an excuse, it just says something about that player if thats what is in their mind during a game.
I totally agree that the kid's got to play, and I don't fault him in any way for transferring. I get it. I just don't think that he is guaranteed playing time at another school. And conversely, I don't think it is a guarantee that he wouldn't play at Ohio State, even if Haskins were (was?) to start the season. It may turn out to be a wise decision (and I hope it does) but it does have some legit risk involved that I don't think we are acknowledging enough.
I agree that QB's shouldn't look over their shoulder, but they often do. And I think it is better for the team not to be debating this come September. Although it would also be better for the team to have a potential badass for a backup. So flip a coin I guess.
Unless Meyer was lying and the QB race wasn't very close, then either Burrow can play just about anywhere or Haskins isn't as good as we think. I agree that there are no guarantees, but I don't think it will be difficult for him to find a good situation where he'd be the clear cut favorite to start.
I don't disagree that some players will look over their shoulder and worry about the guy sitting on the bench behind them. I was just stating that those guys probably shouldn't be starting anyway because they don't have what it takes to be a leader.
Do we take an extra quarterback this recruiting cycle now?
Because I couldn't go for three
If you are talking about taking 2 in '19, I doubt it. Weak class. What the staff needs to figure out in recruiting QB's is do they want a more traditional style offense, or a spread/RO offense. I think that uncertainty affects recruiting more than anything.
What this also does is help with recruiting. The need at QB just became greater with only Haskins and Martell seeing valuable reps at practice. Baldwin will get his shot as well but with Haskins getting his starting job, he could opt to leave early after 1-2 years of playing well. This makes the QB recruits ears perk up as they have a quicker lane to starting since depth at this position is critical.
1. We have a severe depth issue at the QB spot now.
2. Because of #1, I think any package that was going to be considered for Martell is going to be severely limited. You just can't have your #2 QB to come in and run the football and risk getting him injured when we don't really even have a 3rd string QB close to ready to play at this level of competition.
3. I wish Burrow had stayed. Can understand the decision to go. Hopefully it works out well for both parties.
4. OSU fans need to be extremely patient with Haskins and the offensive play callers. Could be a good thing, but the QB run is no longer much of an option (no depth and not a strength of Haskins). Probably see more 2 back sets and a lot less 4 wide.
Dude, don't lose your wig! Way too much living in your fears here!
Not sure I have much faith in Martell being a two dimensional QB at the moment. If Haskins were to go down than there are problems.
That said, it was Burrow's choice and the likelihood of an injury are low.
1. This allows Haskins to take leadership in the summer. He'll build rapport with the receivers.
2. Do not discount the advantage of a Martell package. With limited in-season practice time, it will be hard to prepare for two contrasting styles. Imagine preparing for Sam Darnold and then Khalil Tate comes out.
I can't wait to see Dwayne Haskins as our starter, but more to the point, I can't wait to see him airing out the ball on Saturdays and hitting receivers in stride.
"porque las estirpes condenadas a cien años de soledad no tenían una segunda oportunidad sobre la tierra."
Last.natty delivered by 3rd team QB. Our current 3rd team QB is on rehab. Time to get Baldwin healthy and the walk on in great shape.
I like Haskins a lot but I guaranty that we are going to miss Burrow this season. He is an excellent QB and a great leader. Just hope this does not come back to bite us.
Time to get both Martell and Baldwin ready to step in if necessary. Also, need to get a good one for 2019 (Gunnell?)
Let's Go Dwayne! Earn this!
I thought he earned it with the MI comeback win and the NFL Scouts’ reports.
Seriously though, Haskins has my support!
It would be really interesting to know what Urban Meyer told Borrow. I wonder if he really told Burrow he was number two or if in fact, Burrow got tired of waiting for a decision and essentially made the decision for Meyer? I hope I'm wrong and the Buckeyes win 'em all and Haskins wins the Heisman, but I believe Burrow may turn out to be the exceptional one that got away.
Having sat through the passing game (I know the Receivers couldn’t get separation) the last year and a half by BOTH Burrow and Haskins, probably demonstrated to Burrow that Meyer will not make a change even if warranted or it would jumpstart the offense.
That being the case. even if he was the Backup, barring injury, how likely would he be to play meaningful minutes.
I mean Meyer literally left JT in games last year when the Team was up 40,50+ points.
I wanted him to stay, understood why he left!
Martell wasn't the HS player of the year for nothing. He has talent and can run and throw. He just needs to keep developing because he is one play from being the starter. Baldwin needs to be spun up fast too.
One possible upside is the influence this may have on Gunnell's recruitment. Silver lining?
I need time to grieve. I find it a bit strange that some are "celebrating" the transfer of a young man that gave it hos all, as though we just landed another 5* player.
If Haskins goes down, we're f uqed.
Good luck Joe Burrow!
Who did that?
Sorry but you do not put Martell's package in now that he is the #2 guy. If he gets hurt then who is the next option to go to? Baldwin isnt going to be healthy enough after recovering that knee. I say keep Martell on the sidelines until needed.
Our backup is the former HS player of the year and fans are bitching about depth. Urban has won with a qb who couldn’t throw. If need be, id bet he could do it again. Depth is fine. If you’re worried about injuries, perhaps football isn’t the best fit for you
it has begun
I'm less concerned about Haskins "airing it deep" ala Car-Dale-Jones and more excited about crisp passes to receivers in stride even when they aren't a full two steps open, 15-20 yards downfield. THAT is what will open the run lanes for JK and Weber. And that is what Haskins can bring to this offense starting day one of fall practice. And don't worry about DH occasionally breaking open for a run when he has the corners and safeties 15-30 yards downfield covering receivers. He can pick up a quick 8-10 and do the hook slide for a first down. The "Martel Experience" will likely be a second half/mop up duty to get him comfortable reading coverages and getting to his second and third reads before taking off on a 20 yard run. That will serve him well next year when he's the man and DH is a "top 5 pick" in the nfl draft.
"The "Martel Experience" will likely be a second half/mop up duty to get him comfortable reading coverages and getting to his second and third reads before taking off on a 20 yard run."
See schedule. Which games?
Tate Martel will see playing time every game this season. Dwayne will lead this team to the B1G championship and playoffs, but Tate will play. Every. Game.
I am not ready to say they will make the playoffs just yet, but I agree with everything else you said. Tate will play in every single game.
I agree as OSU is just down to two QB's. One with limited experience as a 'starter", and the back-up a RS freshman with NO real game experience to speak of. If an injury happens, it's going to be a long season. Losing Burrow is a huge loss..........
Saban on a cart eating cold pizza
If Urban lets his Offensive Mines go to WORK! This could be like urban with Tebow and Leak at FU. Obviously different type of quarterbacks but similar skill sets, potentially even Better.
My vote of confidence goes to Haskins. He is pretty much the reason we beat Michigan last year. Facing one of the toughest defenses in hostile territory...he came in cold and made timely, accurate throws and even ran for yardage when it was smart to do so. After that, he was always in the driver's seat for me. Thayer Munford also impressed me in that game when he came in and pancaked Chase Winovich. Naturally, he's starting this year as well
Someone got a set of gold keys to this offense (to go with his gold pants)
The most important verification we have now is he has shown the ability to get gold pants.
Now that the decision has been made, I hope Haskins is up to the task.
If anything, this motivates not only Haskins to work harder, but the O-Line. They know that the QB room isn't all that deep and that they will have to be playing their best games to make sure he doesn't get hurt. Of course, that is all predicated on Urban recognizing his changing offense and utilizing more of Dobbins and Weber. I am aboard the Dwayne Train and I have no doubt that it will take us to some incredible destinations!
Number 1 rule in life: always beat That Team Up North.
