Kendall Sheffield's Development Could Determine Whether Ohio State Extends First-Round Cornerback Streak

Sheffield has a lot to improve on from last year. Inconsistent is a fair assessment from the 2017 season. Looking forward to a new and improved Kendall in 2018.

Go get'em Cal Poppy - we are behind you !!

It's not a rivalry .............. it's a wreckoning.

I really like how Kendall closed out last year. If he can keep that confidence going into this year I can certainly see him get into the discussion of being a first round pick in 2019. No doubt he has the size, speed and length that the NFL covets.

Just posting and hoping my comment isn’t deleted.

Dude is absolutely going to smash the combine, no question, he's a track star.

He just needs to have a really good year, keep up that standard of DB play at Ohio State, and I think he finds his way into the first round. He's an athletic specimen.

Urban Meyer left an incredible legacy. 12/4/18 Ryan Day begins his.

Agreed. And I just want to state that some of those PAs called against him were total BS. But it felt like they helped pile on when everyone was saying he wasn't verge good. I also need to mention that the linebacking core didn't do the secondary any favors last year when it came to coverage. Especially in the games everyone points to as being bad ones for Sheffield - Indiana and Oklahoma. Then of course there's also that Iowa game where everyone played like garbage.

Not sure if Sheffield will be a first rounder, but plenty of other Buckeyes may be.

Bwahahah!!!! But for his sake I hope I'm wrong. His combine might put him in a good spot.

I think cornerback more than any other position you look REALLY bad when you make a mistake because it’s just so obvious. Sheffield didn’t look any worse than some other guys we’ve had when they were inexperienced (I’d argue he was way better than Conley was at the same point).

Its obviously just a guess that he could turn into a first rounder, but there’s no reason to think it’s impossible to happen.

Conley made the leap, while proving a lot of doubters wrong. I see no reason why Sheffield can't do the same.

Conley and Ward both came to my mind. They both struggled when they first played as the nickel but ended up being studs. This is my hope for Sheffield.

HS

Yeah plus the narrative that he wasn't very good last year was way overblown to me. When the year began the whole secondary was giving up a ton of yards. He was pretty solid after that like the rest of the secondary and by the end, I thought he was playing really well, especially in the last few games.

Ward never struggled....he would have never been listed as a co starter with 2 first round picks if he had

I remember articles last year written the exact same just replace "Kendall Sheffield" with Denzel Ward.

I also remember when gareon Conley couldn't live up to Eli apple.

I also remember when Eli apple couldn't live up to Bradley Roby.

What I'm trying to say is I think the kids are alright.

I think how Ward and the other former Bucks perform this season will have something to do with it as well..

With the current NFL Draft cycles, I’d rather be an athletic DB, than a talented WR.

Yes, unless you are an elite offensive player, defense is where it's at in the NFL.

Sheffield is the Isaiah Prince of cornerbacks - it's all mental with him.

Hopefully sooner than later, he'll get it...and he'll be a stud.

Hove, I think you are being a little hard on him. Prince was a major liability at his worst. I don't think Sheffield was ever a liability. I would call his year a success last year overall, though he had some rough moments at the start as everyone has pointed out. But what Buckeyes didn't have some rough spots last season? <cough, Iowa, cough>

Shef will prove to be a first rounder and Okudah will follow.

You can teach technique, you can teach schemes, you can teach reads...

...but you can't teach speed!! And Sheffield has the speed, I think he makes huge strides this year.

No such thing as a bad win

I think Sheffield can find himself in the First Round with a good season.  He has the momentum of Ohio State's #DBU behind him.

Gotta say, that's an impressive list of OSU corner first rounders to drop at the feet of prospects.

The NFL scout that told Ari Wasserman who Ohio State's top 4 pro prospects were last August must not have noticed the guy wearing #97, because he's clearly a top four NFL prospect... not just at Ohio State but period.

The 4 mentioned were all eligible for the draft so that is why Bosa wasn't included.

It's because Bosa wasn't eligible for 2018. All of the others were.

It will be interesting to see what Taver Johnson can do with Sheffield (and the other CBs for that matter).  That will impact what becomes the ceiling for any of these young men.  Taver has a different style than Kerry had, but they both have solid coaching techniques.  The talent is there - the kid was a former five-star.  Mixing the new safeties coaching in with the new CBs coaching will be critical, but everything still falls under Schiano's system.  Bucks should be strong on the back end this year if it all meshes well.

Certainly has all the physical tools to be a 1st rounder, hope he puts it altogether on the field this year.

HS
TTUN@SS@SIN's picture

He has all the physical tools and speed necessary to be a 1st rd. pick for sure. He just needs to focus on his man coverage, being fearless, and hitting, just like Ward had to last year.

Sheffield show positive improvement as last season went on. I expect his off season leap to be huge and Buckeye Nation be truly satisfied with his shot down abilities.

These kind of lists are just as worthless as the preseason rankings.  Both hurt the rising folks that must pass over those already in place.

college football is most definitely a place where maturity from HS senior to a university upperclassman is progressed each succeeding year in an elite program. You mark in history the names of freshmen who are phenomenal — most others follow the path of growth from a recruit to a leader on the team.

that is my believe, and I temper my expectations thusly

experience can only come with time in the program, so my hope is the player views their college career as the crucible where elite coaching over years yields NFL level competence

The Sheffield that ended the season was far better than the Sheffield that started the season. He looked very good in the bowl game. My bet would be on 1st rounder.

We currently have great defensive coaches. Once they've done a few more months of coaching we should see the undeniable results. I would love a team known for defense as well as scoring.

I'm a bills fan and so one name comes to mind when I watch him play, Aaron Williams....corner outta texas.....they tried him at corner first and he looked so stiff he couldn't keep up with the WRs in man coverage then they did something really smart they moved him to safety....he was freaking awesome there, went to the pro bowl only injuries cut his career short.....sheffield reminds me so much of him

Wonder how good his hands/elusiveness are? Like to see him and the goat lined up deep on kick return. Talk about some crazy speed.
