Hove I love your choice of wording.  Quick story: my daughter is on a U9 travel soccer team, that I help coach.  In the fall we went completely undefeated, outscoring opponents 132-11.  So, we decided this spring to move up to U10 for better competition.  Tonight is our first game, and this morning I asked my daughter "Are you going to be scared of the older U10 girls?"  Without hesitation she said "Nope.  I'm going to crush their souls."  My little 8-year old!  While I question my parenting to this point, and she needs to work on word choice, I LOVE it!  Lol

amazing what we so casually do to/with words....

we "love to" "crush souls", but

'bullying' is a terrible injustice requiring a national campaign of 'stars' to just 'raise our awareness'.

and then these things 'blow up' and 'go viral' ...and infect hundreds of millions overnight.

Like calling a choice its result - an addiction'; then, an "epidemic" when many addict themselves... for which we need to pour out billions because "it's a health care crises".  And of  course, 'be sad' while we subsidize the foxes in the henhouses of our 'caring'.

It starts so casually so often daily... when i'm just 'being myself' ...sniffing every scent that comes along.

'Me too'.  Indeed, this dog returns to his own vomit.

Sending a high five across the miles, Avail.

My son (eight in June) is playing spring football. Not a big talker (like me, despite my flair for the commentary here), but he's all into the fist bumps this season.

In awe of the kids, they never cease to amaze.

Excellent!  Good luck in your season!  High fives back at ya.

Also, they tied 0-0 tonight so they at least belong on the field with these older girls.

HS

To you, Hov... well done.  Admirable self-restraint.

To us all:  What an awesome responsibility, as "...the child is the father of the man".

Thus what casually appears everywhere as "love vs love", is in reality and righteousness [not defined or determined by me] is "true love" vs all imposters and 'all the usual suspects'.

What a fight!

Buck68, glad I read you loud and clear - and, I admit, my quotes weren't necessary.

HS

I personally find you to be an excellent translator as well Sir.  I wouldn't have figured out the meaning of his response to you had you not responded about the quotes.  With all due respect to 68 it's ironic that when I see a large compilation of quotes and ellipses I usually know who it is and skip it.  Not to be rude but I know that Im not going to understand it.  I will just blame it on my lack of education.

HS
Major H's picture

I don't think education has anything to do with it. When reading Buck68, just open your mind and allow the words to kind of float through your mind.  Think of the wider concepts of the words. Or, you can just skip them. Just remember:

Army... i suspect it's a lot more about 'unwillingness to figure out', than it is figuring out.

Consider something as simple as "usually know" by a couple hieroglyphics... be they words or symbols....   ;-{)}

When you "know you're not going to understand"... 'usually' you are right.

But you're in the United States Army - you know that on the battlefield, the soldier that blames another soon has that "lack" pointed right at him.

Hand,Sa...lute!

HS
ARMYBUCK's picture

I wouldn't say it's an unwillingness to figure it out.  I'm prone to overthink things and sometimes I think you may do enough of that for the both of us, so I move on.  I concede that you may be too knowledgeable for me to keep up with.  Take it as a compliment.

HS
Buck68's picture

Ironic & amusing, Army!

I have, and have been accused, of 'overthinking' as well.

Yet usually, my overthink has been a consequence of my unwillingness to first consider greater things before jumping on smaller things.

AKA 'first things... first!'  ;-{)}

...to be continued.

HS
Buck68's picture

Major - glad you choose to see it as "us" not him & him in some "him" contest....   ;-{)}

Is there any correlation between how early someone loses their stripe and their overall career at OSU? I'd guess that the earlier you lose it in the spring, the more likely you are to play immediately (for obvious reasons)...but like as an overall thing, just wondering how much it relates.

Like if we looked at all of the most successful players of the Meyer tenure (defined however*), is there a clear indication that many of them lost their stripe early, so we should start getting extra-excited about these guys? Or is there no real trend whatsoever - some awesome players lost it early but just as many didn't lose their stripe until late August or even the fall of their RS year?

Player Position Date removed
DE'VAN BOGARD AND NOAH SPENCE DB/DE AUG. 9, 2012
JOE RAMSTETTER WR AUG. 9, 2013
CURTIS SAMUEL AND RAEKWON MCMILLAN RB/LB AUG. 10, 2014
ISAIAH PRINCE OL AUG. 13, 2015
AUSTIN MACK WR MARCH 31, 2016
JK DOBBINS RB AUG. 4, 2017

Looking at the last 4 years, all have been significant players. Samuel and Kwon, results speak for themselves. Prince is going into his 3rd year starting and probably best lineman this year. Mack is probably the most complete WR on the team. Dobbins, well we all saw what he did last year.

In 2017 the first 7 guys saw playing time, got a lot of special teams play or were key back ups. Dobbins, Pryor, Young, Okudah, Garrett, Munford, Werner in that order. So I'd say if you get your black stripe removed early, it's likely you're going to be somewhat successful.

Since Mo Clarrett was the first I know of to enroll early, he has to count for something.

I'm pretty sure Dobbins was one of the first significant recruits to lose his stripe last year, if not the first, and I thought he'd be a star as a freshman. Same deal with Togiai. This guy's got some unique, neck-snapping pop in his play, which would go a long way for this defensive line.

As a Civil War general once said, "He who gets there fastest with the mostest wins the day." The same holds true on the defensive line, or... as is the case of someone with the combination of push and speedy-explosion that Togiai has, "he who gets there fastest with the mostest size and power occupies the most space and takes up the most blockers."

IMHO, if there's one element that's been missing along Ohio State's defensive line, it's that kind of guy: Someone who can clear a path for Bosa, Young, Jones, etc. to be even more effective, forcing offenses to pick their poison with double teaming.

On a related note, Jaylen Holmes was great, but he didn't have the sort of size/speed/strength combo to perform this sort of function. Meanwhile, Landers is a great specialist with a fabulous first step, and he's terrific at using his relative (under)size and low center of gravity for leverage, but he's got more of a 'sneak beneath or around' skillset vs. knocking people backwards and taking up space.

Togiai, may be ready to play that role... and more... as a freshman.

Obviously we don't get to see their reaction to all commitments but you have to believe that based on these reactions they were really hoping for this one. Looks like Tommy is already proving why.

This guy has NFL potential....some of the other DTs mentioned here though getting much love, not so much potential.  This guy lost his stripe on film and the day he committed.  Barring injury headed for greatness.  Lower body strength incredible with balance , explosiveness, quickness, pursuit, ability to play low and not lose any football awareness,,,,,,,By time TTUN rolls around going to be a wolverine hunter.

Togiai is prounounced Tongy-eye.
Don't ask me why.
Samoans spell Tonga without the "n," and pronounce Pago Pago, Pango Pango.
It's the same with Alabama's QB-- Tagovailoa is pronounced Tangovailoa.

I usually don't get too excited about recruits until they have actually done something on the field as Buckeyes though admit to being very excited about Tommy Togiai.  His connection with our staff during recruiting, his commitment video, and now having his black stripe removed all speak to his passion/intensity.  I'm thrilled he is in Columbus and do see him playing this year as a freshman.  Go Bucks!

HS

He is going to murder someone on the field during his time at OSU. I truly believe this guy is going to be an absolute terror and live in opponents backfields, or on quarterbacks heads.

Not sure if you guys know this but its a BAD idea to let a Dlineman sit on your QB's head.

Proudly dispensing unbridled arrogance since 1983.

It not only makes me feel better about the Buckeye's defensive line depth, which one of the writers in this forum labeled as "Stock Down" only yesterday," but, gee, it kinda makes me feel hopeful about what I posted only last night (p.s. don't be surprised if this kid winds up being Ohio State's combination of Ndamukong Such and Aaron Donald. :

"... while I know I'm supposed to be quaking in my boots at the prospect of a freshman starting (although I predicted Dobbins would start as a freshman and become a star, which worked out pretty well), well, along similar lines, I say watch out for Tommy Togiai.

He and Holmes are roughly as fast as one another, but Togiai is about 25 pounds bigger, as well as stronger, and his first step and burst is as fast and explosive as it gets for a big man.

He's got a pretty good technique, too, but we'll have to see how he develops. He's certainly got a good coach. Anyway, Holmes excelled in his technique, which was necessary to compensate for being undersized, but don't rule out Togiai's ability.

I know it's tough for freshman to start, but it's not uncommon for one or more guys to spring out of nowhere, and Togiai is as good a bet as any for making the leap."
