"The men's hockey team beat Michigan in OT and will face Notre Dame for the Big Ten championship."

I had to read this a couple of times because it threw me off..I really don't understand this one..did I miss something??

What’s confusing? Notre Dame in the B1G? They are for hockey. http://www.bigten.org/sports/m-hockey/spec-rel/m-hockey-standings.html

I guess I didn't realize that they were apart the B1G in hockey, my bad, I don't follow hockey..I didn't know that a team can join a conference without the whole program/school joining as well..

HS

Then this will really blow your mind: They are in the ACC for Basketball.

Try’s this one on for size:

Johns Hopkins is a member of the Big Ten...in men’s and women’s lacrosse. It’s their only Division I sport.

I was actually really disappointed when ND joined in hockey.  For years the Big 10 held firm on the fact that members must put all div 1 teams into the B10 version of conference.  Then they made an exception for ND hockey.  (Johns Hopkins wasn't an exception because they only offer lacrosse.)

HS
ibuck's picture

There are only 6 full B1G members in men's hockey (OSU, PSU, MSU, TTUN, Minn and Wisc). It seems ND was added to bolster the league's membership...and perhaps prestige. (Just as Johns Hopkins was added in lacrosse—adding prestige and a 6th member.)

[Women's Hockey is not a B1G sport.]

Our honor defend, so we'll fight to the end !

HS
Urbane Meijer's picture

I understand why they did it. I just think it was a bad precedent.

B10 hockey was a direct result of the B10 network.  It gives them lots of content that is popular and isn't tied to any existing deals.

It's my understanding that if 6 teams in the B10 offer a sport, the league must form a conference, and the teams must all join.  So if two more schools start women's hockey, we'll see that happen.

HS
MuraliPatel's picture

To be fair, it's one hell of a LaCrosse program.

IMHO, They should get out and play in the Eastern Conference, or whatever conference the old Big East/ACC schools play hockey in right now.

Go Hockey Bucks.  An opportunity to beat two of the nations schools with arguably the worst fans in a row.  By worst, I mean obnoxious.  Since I was just a young man, a really long time ago, I've rooted for the Buckeyes and the teams playing ickigan and nd.  What a way to advance!  Please beat these guys too.

Don't know Jack about SDS.  But beat the fur off these guys too.

Mr. Saunders. Carbohydrates become broken down into sugar. America is overweight bc of sugar. Potato, breads, noodles, rice, cereal and others cause most to gain weight. Plus delicious also. Best of luck. You have great skills and we're all looking forward to increased positive contribution.

I'm with you, but clicked that article it from habit, and was surprised to see it featured Wenatchee.  But, I guess I shouldn't have been too surprised, because that part of the state has seen huge growth in server farms (for the same reason as bitcoin), up until now mostly as a home for "the cloud."  Amazon, Google, and pretty much all of the big boys have server farms somewhere in eastern WA.  The city of Wenatchee is kind of meh, but one of my favorite ski areas is just outside the city, and they have a nice century ride in the spring.

My aim, then, is to whip the Weasels, to humble their pride, to follow them to their inmost recesses, and make them fear and dread us. Fear is the beginning of wisdom.   - William Tecumseh Sherman (with apologies)

Basically virtual things have as much value as people in real life are willing to give it. This is why you can sell currency in games like World of Warcraft for real money.

Los Angeleno by birth; Marionaire by the Grace of President Warren G. Harding.

HS
blueblazer22's picture

Conceptually I get it-anything is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. But never having gotten into any gaming like Warcraft and the like, it boggles my old/small mind to think that people will assign value to something that intrinsically has little or none. Whatever works for folks-doesn’t truly affect me one way or the other I suppose.

"They say, "these geeks come a dime a dozen.  I'm lookin' for the guy who's supplyin' the dimes." -Classy Freddie Blassie

HS
stxbuck's picture

It has value in the game-you can do more stuff with it-thus it has monetary value in the real world. No different from a re-buy in poker. FWIW, something is only as valuable as it's liquidity.

HS
Texas_Bucks's picture

The same can be said for real things, too. My Grandpa always said that something is only worth as much as someone else will give you for it; realtors in this area need to wake up to that.

Yup. I used to manage a sports memorabilia store, and every third person that came in would say something to the effect of “I have a signed Michael Jordan jersey-what’s it worth?” And every one would be ticked when I answered with “whatever someone is willing to pay you for it”.

I could have thr crown jewels in my possession and say they are worth $5b, but unless someone is going to pony up that $5b, the jewels have no real value to the seller.

But yet you still buy into the notion that paper currency has value.... It's not backed by anything, either, except the full faith and credit of an issuing government, which has looked like an increasingly risky proposition for, oh, about 50 years.

The only thing that's new in the world is the history that we have forgotten.

HS
BbBnD's picture

That’s a huge “except.” Comparing USD to bitcoin is absurd until governments start letting you pay your taxes in cryptocurrencies and they obviously won’t unless they’re the issuer.

HS
WC Buckeye's picture

I didn't compare USD to bitcoin. Rather, I stated that people look at paper currency and "believe" that is has more value than the paper it's printed upon; there is a reason USD is the de facto reference currency around the world, and I didn't call that part into question. I did question the logical fallacy, though, that "full faith and credit" has merit when governments in general don't have very good credit, including ours.

You kind of support the reason that cryptocurrencies came about in the first place (decentralization) and why they probably will struggle to be viable (government) in one statement.

The only thing that's new in the world is the history that we have forgotten.

The Ice-VII wmd is cool, no pun intended. I find it interesting when something is discovered by scientists who are looking for something else. Plus I must say I did not know that diamonds could encase any type of ice, much less one that was not known to exist on earth.

Taron Vincent sounds like a beast. His dad certainly could play, so why not the son? Let's see him in action.

The dreaded 5-12 matchup, but I think the Bucks have enough to stave off the upset. Sorry Jackrabbits.

I wish the article would have had more info as to how even liquid water can exist where diamonds are formed.  I was under the impression that it was far too hot there.

HS
blueblazer22's picture

I was not completely clear on that either, but it seemed that because of the pressure in/around the diamond the tiny bit of ice inside cools/stays cool. Due to the diamond staying stable, the interior also stays   But I am no gemologist or scientist so take this with a grain of salt.

EAT BREAD

When I was in high school, on Saturday morning after one game, I had a loaf of wonder bread and began toasting it, buttering it, and then eating it. I started eating after having several sets of bread toasted so I was constantly buttering and adding to my stack while eating. It was kind of a mindless activity as I was running on my lizard brain. I had been up late celebrating the victory and Saturday video sessions came early. Anyway, at some point, I ran out of bread. Couldn't believe I had eaten a loaf of toast. That would put me into diabetic shock these days. Good thing I was a Slob, or as we called ourselves, Big Uglies; no one expected me to run fast.

Thanks for the Bitcoin WMD DJ. That was the best explanation I've seen on what it actually takes to "mine" or create bitcoin. I can now understand the need for huge amounts of cheap electricity, the ever increasing scale-up server farms, the cost of the investment for the people speculating on the growth, the real people involved. Makes a lot more sense now that it did for me.

I always wondered, who in the hell are these "miners" and just how is the sausage made? And even if you think this is all just based on speculation like there was for Dutch tulips, government-backed mortgages, or Michigan's chances of ever beating Ohio State while Urban is the coach, you can see the current/future application possibilities for blockchain in the corporate world making this all have staying power.

I've had friends contact me about going to the game.  Yes, I'm in Idaho. But, Boise is 368 miles from here, so no.    I wish I was more optimistic and I'll certainly be rooting for the Bucks but Gonzaga is really hot now and I don't think the Bucks will get past them (assuming they get there) or I would go.  Spokane to Boise is cheap via air.

Regarding the Bitcoins...west of  me here is a big high plains desert (not technically desert, but, yeah) and its booming with technology firms.  Not a great place to live though.  The Grand Coulee damn chunks out a lot of electricity and it irrigates an area the size of France.  Think about it.  France ain't exactly small.    For a while it was the worlds largest concrete structure.

I think Bitcoin is a fad.  Every currency has its counterfeiters and as they are catching up with this currency.  300, 200, 100 years ago, a gold coin bought a fine Men's suit.  The same is true today.
