I wish him nothing but the best, whatever he does from here out. I would not like to have to meet him in a big game in the future, just because of the respect I have for him as a coach & person.

Same here.  Hope that it was a fat finger by someone versus actually meaning to do it.

I don't buy one goddam drop of gas in the state of Michigan!

You nailed the reason why Thad won’t be coaching there.

I met Thad when I worked in the media behind the scenes.

Class act all the way. If his desire is to land somewhere - I wish him the best.

It's not a rivalry .............. it's a wreckoning.

Ole Miss: WhatzaMatta U?

"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." - Edmund Burke

Well duh, Ole Miss wouldn't know what to do with a coach who actually plays by the rules. Thad is better off.

Probably because he won't allow his players to film themselves taking bong hits out of a gas mask

Good he is taking my advice and waiting for Sean Miller to get fired and the Arizona job to open up, that will be Karma for the Kobi Simmons shenanigans.

Pittsburgh is a mess and its not far from Columbus.  Would like to see him there because Stallings is all but gone.

If i could change my username, i would

What ever Coach Matta decides to do in the future i wish him and his family nothing but the best. Well back to the Cavs game and hopefully they can hold on and beat Denver.

Just a guess they maybe  looking for a young and coming coach that's on the rise. Thad was on a decline when he was let go that's not going to help.

He's too good for that garbage SEC program.

My sentiments exactly. That’s just slumming. I’d much rather see him at a MAC school or something like that.

I know it’s his life and he’s earned the right to do what he wants but I feel like I’m watching an over the hill boxer.

Feel like he needs a couple of years off. Go enjoy your millions and your family. Let your body rest, let your mind rest, and give yourself a chance to truly miss the game.

So this is how it went down:

Ole Miss AD: “So, Coach, you’re good with bagmen and paying recruits?”

Matta: “Nope”

Interview over.

It didn't seem like a good fit.  Hope he finds a spot somewhere, just not in the B1G

I think it's difficult for any competitor to walk away from their sport.

Wasn't surprised in the sense Matta may still have an itch to coach, couldn't say I know enough about Ole Miss hoops to judge whether or not his interest there made any sense.

Hindsight is, and in, 2020

He will have much better options than Ole Miss. I'm assuming he went down there to kick the tires and found a jalopy that didn't interest him in the slightest.

Thad isn't a cheater so Ole Miss was like "nah never mind"

Class of 2010.

I bet Matta is the head coach at Pitt in the next 7 days.

I dont intend to be too mean about this, but to some degree I think Matt's success was tied to his staff.

When he first got here he had guys on the bench with him like Archie MIller, Alan Major, John Groce, Brandon Miller, and had a ton of success in part due to his own ability, better health and high quality recruiters as assts.

when that staff switched to Dickerson (a bad HC at Tulane and a Gary Willaims Asst at MD, who currently not coaching), Boals (sub .500 HC at Stoney Brook, who came from Akron and some terrible Robert Morris teams in the 90's and early 2000's), and Paulus (1sst real asst role and now asst at Louisville), his teams struggled.

The 2010/11 recruiting class of Sullinger, Craft and Thomas among others, was the last recruited in part by Brandon Miller

When he left after that season and was replaced by Jent and with Matta's own deterioration and inability to get on the road to recruit himself (health issues), the classes started to slip almost year by year.

Assuming his health is not much better than it was last year, his success will be largely dependent on his staff.

Matta's botched back surgery happened in 2007, The Dispatch ran a story after he was let go showing he decline in recruting trips made by the entire staff and especially Matta.

In 11/12 and 12/13 Matta made 32 and 38 recruiting trips respectively for an average of 35/year, by 15/16 season he made only 13!!, That's a 63% reduction.

What made it worse was his assts didnt pick up the slack.

In 12/13 Jent, Boals and Dickerson combined made 131 recruiting visits,

by 15/16, Boals Dickerson and Paulus made only 67,

That is a nearly 50% drop at a time when the HC is struggling physically to get on the road himself.

And possibly contrary to popular belief it was Dickerson and Boals who let the program down not Paulus.

Paulus replaced Jent and he actually made essentially the same number of trips as Jent, ie approx 30/year

But Dickerson came down from 53 to 27 and Boals from 48 to 19. Dickerson's wife has been struggling with health issues as well and perhaps he could use that as an excuse, but Boals had no excuse and the inability to either use Paulus even more or get Boals out there in replacement of Matta and Dickerson ened up being huge in the decline of the program.

I think Smith gave Matta a vote of confidence but also an ultimatum that the recruiting effort had to get better and show results or something would need to change.

Matta was still able off the programs previous success to get some good recruits still, but he had trouble now keeping them, perhaps the fewer visits meant poorer evaluations of the kids "fit" for the program, thus leading to the mass exodus of back to back classes, misses like Amir, Loving etc who stayed but never developed and on and on.

So when the news of losing recurits started happening in the spring of last year and the loss of Lyle also (another missed recruit if you will), the meeting with Smith may have gone as simply as this.

Gene: what are we doing about improving recuiting?

Matta: we are doing the best we can

Gene: I need a commitment from you and your staff to get out there more and fix this

Matta: I cant do that

Gene: (a bit stunned perhaps at Matta's refusal), then perhaps we need to make a change

Matta: perhaps
