Urban Meyer Excited About Competition As Ohio State Begins Spring Of Uncertainty

Competition brings out the best in most players - I absolutely love this time of the year. That Spring Game this year will be at another level.

Go get'em Cal Poppy - we are behind you !!

It's not a rivalry .............. it's a wreckoning.

Another level above 2015?

But, but, but, I thought Urban doesn't have competition and doesnt play the best players? All the armchair QBs in tinfoil hats got it wrong I guess.

He wasn't saying these things last year. He was saying JT is our guy. Not saying he was wrong, but he was not preaching wanting two or three guys thinking they will be the starter

HS

Of course JT was the guy, he was the returning starting QB. Now he graduates and its an open competition.

HS
osudray's picture

and many people here believe that if there was a true QB competition that JT would not have won the job.... some would argue he wouldn't have been the back up.

New season, new team, new QB. May the best man win!

If anyone really believed that the fifth year senior QB with like every big ten record at the position and a ridiculous win % wouldn’t have won the starting job (or have been the backup) because a freshman threw a good pass against Michigan, they are delusional.

HS
osudray's picture

I don't disagree but its funny that college football is the only place where age is such an argument.

For example based on your reasoning you would say; If you really think the 6 year vet who just won the super bowl MVP will not win the job over the younger Carson Wentz, you are delusional. Just because JT was a starter, 5th year, and had records, doesn't mean those records couldn't have been set by someone else if given the same opportunity

He ranked talent last. That sounds about right.

HS
PhillyNut's picture

When there is no clear difference in the talent level of the competitors then it does make sense. And when one says "talent" are they only talking about the ability to throw the ball into a tight window at 40 yards for a qb or does it include all of the other aspects like making the right reads, limiting turnovers, etc.

I don't buy one goddam drop of gas in the state of Michigan!

Especially with an offense like Ohio State’s.  This isn’t the NFL, and we aren’t looking for a pocket passer necessarily

I just hope it is a Spring Game as opposed to 2 hand touch football! Yet I am excited to see this Haskins guy throw a football, I hear he is pretty good!

Love Burrow as I am an Ohio guy against the world, yet Pro style QB is a great place to be!

I don’t want another Barrett/Jones scenario. Constantly trying to prove they belong, making mistakes, looking over their shoulder.

I hope when they name a QB, Urban makes it clear he’s the man.

Agreed. A competition needs to have an end and a winner.

HS

as excellent a point as it is obvious.

may i suggest not an 'end', but a cycle... while the player is here?

Meyer said the No. 1 factor that will be considered is competitiveness, followed by toughness, leadership and talent,

uh, can I also suggest things like accuracy and ability to read coverages?

HS
85ThruTheHeart's picture

If competitiveness is truly #1 I think Tate has more of a chance than we think. You don’t get much more competitive than undefeated at the top level of hs football.

Gotta have that leadership!  Opaque, vague, intangible leadership.

HS

You can have Alex Smith, but Urban's had remarkable success for having such an indifference to accurate QBs.

Fucking awful to watch though. I wanted to die watching the Wisconsin and USC games.

HS
BUCKAROOTIMESTWO's picture

True Tidus.  I was at both games too!  At the CB, from about the third quarter on, the fans were restless.  Folks took to being on their phone, up and down to Concessions, back and forward to the restroom, and conversations with surrounding fans.  Doing some of everything but watching a boring CB game.

HS

To me that is part of talent.

Yes feel free to suggest things to one of the best college football head coaches, you might have some valuable input he hasn’t considered

why BrutusB... of course you may suggest whatever... agrees with ME.

[or be banished to the far corners of....wherever that mythical little white circle for free speech is... is.   ;-{)}  ]

only 1 minor problem...   There's a hole lotta more "me's" in the ME generations....that there are corners to be crammed into....

This is Ohio State. Here first you have to earn the job. Then you have to win the job. Then you have to prove you're yourself doing the job. The QB starting week 1 won't have a firm grip on the job, but he will have the chance to prove himself and keep the job. That is why you compete so hard, just for the opportunity.... GO FORWARD YOUNG BUCKS!

Theopulas

HS
Ba Ba Boolio's picture

I could be wrong but it feels like Haskins will win the job during the spring, Martell will be the backup and Burrow will be the starting qb for another team this fall.

HS
Extramedium's picture

Based on Meyer’s preferred mobile QB look and similar arm strength between the two, it's really not as cut and dried as it seems.. despite Haskins throwing a good pass vs Michigan.

HS
McGrind's picture

And the last trait to consider in a QB is passing accuracy....well ok then.

If you have nothing to hide you have nothing to fear.

Probably a stupid response---but I don't spend much time watching the center play in a game unless he centers the ball over the quarterback's head.  I must admit that Billy Price must have been one hellava center. And, since he starts every offensive play, we all have seen his talents many times.  I am not dumb enough to think that all a center does is snap the ball.  He better be a great blocker as well.  So, who do we have at center and how good/bad is he?  Listening to UFM today, he sounded like he is very, very concerned about the center.  How about some opinions from some of you guys on our center--worried, not worried, just coaching talk from UFM or what?  GO BUCKS!!

I get the sense that most here think Taylor is a shoo in. I think one of the more talented guards will slide in. We won a Natty with a guy that wasn’t the best athlete, so I could be out to lunch.

HS
buckslan's picture

I don't think Meyer is that worried about center, he just doesn't know who that guy is going to be yet. He's not worried about Burrow or Haskins because he knows they will both excel, he's not worried about LT cuz Prince is there. He's not worried about RT cuz is seems Munford is really stepping up. But at center you have Brady Taylor, Matt Burrell, and Josh Myers. Taylor and Burrell have been in the program for 5 and 4 years but have yet to do anything significant, Myers has the most upside of the 3 and he's in his 2nd season. I would really love to see Josh Myers win the starting center battle as he's one of the strongest linemen on the team and this is his 2nd spring camp.

I'll get excited about the QB situation on the first day of fall camp. Until then, get better everyday fellas.

Just happy I'm not the guy that has to name a starting qb. I like all 3 and I'm pulling for them all to be successful.

The coaches will have established separation by the end of spring but won’t show their cards.. Don’t be surprised to see Martel emerge by fall camp.. It would de nice to have three tailbacks in the rotation come opening day.  Of course it doesn’t matter unless the O line is ready..  I’m thinking the TCU game will depend on that unit.. Don’t get me started on WRs..

I like competition as well. but competition isn't naming 6 starters at WR, nearly double digit team captains and allowing starters coming back to be handed their jobs without open, true competition (like QB in the spring last year). but I digress.

As for this year's team. the more real competition, the better. will make for a hungry team across the board.

HS
BUCKAROOTIMESTWO's picture

I considern the starting WRs to be those who trout out there for the first snap.

Personally I wouldn’t care if I was named a starter or not.  I would want to be one of the WR they’re calling on to make a play, catch a PASS!  Most anything else is going to be a bunch of blocking.

Have reporters seen even a scintilla of evidence to indicate the 3 QB’s are anything but supportive of each other? I always thought it was great how 12 Gauge and JT were so close even though they battled daily.

HS

It's science.

You say I'm boring, I say hardly. Let's get together and have a pizza party.

HS
Jdadams01's picture

I just think it keeps people on pins and needles and performance – it's science – that performance is better when you have someone, the discomfort of competition at times, that's where you're on point, you’re on point. If it's just by yourself, sometimes you have a tendency to be complacent."

...except for last year when he said JT was QB1 no matter what, even when the offense struggled at times.
