Mccall @ punt n kick return yesss
stark county football
The lord of brevity.
I was personally fine with Hill at PR. He never broke a good return, but he also didn't drop any or catch one at the 5 that I can recall. Maybe my standards have just fallen that far that I consider that a good job though.
He did a perfect job at catching punts until the USC game that gifted the Trojans their only score of the game. He has virtually no explosiveness in his return ability. If DMC can catch punts, he should be back there.
This is definitely where I parked my car.
all our personals aside...
to consider your descriptions 'on the merits'...
for "your standards" ...did they change?
It is a matter of what you said: at the beginning.
I....like... your example; it suggests...the stakes... without leaping to claim what you knew before...after. !
The starting offense is a moot point. McCall will return every punt and kick-off for a touchdown. Urban doesn't need anyone else.
So we won't have to pencil him into the QB competition????
You Got Barbecue Back There!?!?!?!
Also sounds too good to be true. At this point, I wouldn't be surprised to see Weber returning punts too. Lol
Urban Meyer >Jim Harbaugh for ever and ever, Amen. 0
"Had a very good day on Tuesday," and will be a full-time H-back who plays a role like Curtis Samuel this year
It sounds like we finally might see an expanded role for the GOAT, I wonder how the time will be split up between him and Campell
^ best post ever ^
As long as it's not Weber at KO Return.
“Things may come to those who wait, but only the things left by those who hustle.”
This deserves 100 upvotes.
Added that Ryan Day will spend more time working directly with the wide receivers this season as well.
When your boss assigns someone to help you do the job you're supposed to do, you're not doing your job well. Better step it up, Zach Smith.
Not just to help him do the job, but to help him fulfill his basic job duties. That's bad
Is there anyone who read this and didn't immediately look toward heaven and said:

We have recruited SO much talent at WR.
...so much talent... that we have yet to realize... to apply... in the Arena of reality... in the moments of A-B 4-6.
Yet, so much more, in the 'leadership' to putting individuals, in positions to create/exploit Relative Advantage...
which are but A Moment in Time.
Why have Smith on staff if he can’t handle his job?
Of course Day will be more involved with the WR's. An OC/QB coach is always involved with WR's in a true passing offense.
Read/Option QB's rarely have the skills required to throw the timing routes. Now we'll have a true passing QB. Pinpoint coordination between the QB and WR's (on timing routes) requires a new level of execution. We threw very few timing routes in the past 4 seasons. That will change, big time.
It doesn't mean Zach's role is in any way diminished. Nor does it mean Day's OC/QB role is diminished because he'll be spending more time synching the passing game with the WR's.
Zone6, with rotating WR's, will have 1000+ yards at all 3 WR positions this season
Lead, follow, or get out of my way!
Part of me thinks its because the guy can recruit.
well... due wee all no, '74... the question is whether 'he' 'can or can't 'handle'...?
I wonder...isn't that question we attribute to 'him'... ours?
It makes sense to have the QB coach working with WRs regardless of how Smith is doing his job though to be fair.
It's not exactly a sign of Smith not doing a good job. It's just Ryan Days responsibility as a coordinator to make sure his QB and WRs are on the same page, something that has been very inconsistent for the past 3 years (and not always Smiths fault)
Maybe it’s because Day will have some free time and won’t have to help as much with the QBs; there’s that thought.
Now that Earle is gone he can tell Smith to move along. Under achieving group
Earle is not gone.
Now that Earle is gone he can tell Smith to move along. Under achieving group
You watch the NFL combines, right? Did you notice how the WR's "underachieve" when Read/Option QB's throw to them? Then how they look just fine when elite pro-style QB's throw to them? Funny how that works.
Let's see what Zone6 looks like with an elite passing QB this season. - IMO, they will blow the doors off all NCAA competition - then they'll move on to make a tidy living playing WR in the NFL (in record numbers... yet again)
Zach is the coach you want to drum out of C'bus? Really?
I have to admit...even when Barrett threw a perfect strike on a deep route our WRs dropped more than they caught.
Dropped a couple. Yes, true. All WR's drop a few. Read the NFL stats on drops. Ranges from 3% to 12% (and higher) for top NFL WR's on 200+ catches.
Dropped more than they caught on pure strikes? Horse Shit. Pure Horse Shit.
I am talking about drops on deep passes by Ohio State wide receivers the last two years, not NFL receivers. There were several just last year where the ball went through the hands of our WR, who had gotten behind the defense, which would have been TDs. Perhaps you can name the passes that traveled more than 25-30 yards in the air that were caught for TDs as opposed to those that were dropped? I seem to remember Dixon, Victor, and Campbell all dropping such passes.
Personally I recall there being very few perfect strikes, in particular on deep balls.
There were very few, not questioning that, but I remember three or so each of the last few years where a receiver on a deep route dropped a sure TD pass that went right through their hands.
Meyer has had conversations about Burrow possibly transferring and he is less concerned about the QB battle than the center battle says to me that Haskins starts. Just saying.
There can be only one
Tells me that it is either Haskins or Burrow. If Tate had a 33% shot, I think that Burrow transferring would have happened before Spring. I think the chances are 45% Haskins, 45% Burrow, 10% Tate
well you can keep your fingers crossed
My guess is that it'll be decided by 10% luck, 20% skill, 15% concentrated power of will, 5% pleasure, 50% pain...
...I'm sorry. I couldn't stop myself.
"Aut viam inveniam aut faciam!"
Thankfully, you had to stop at 100%* or you'd still be going.
* Unless you're a recruit who's 1000% committed, which means you're not because if you can't grasp the rules and boundaries of basic math, your word as your bond isn't going to be indisputable, either.
(Almost forgot: "Please respect my decision.")
I will also assume that anyone that upvoted this broke into rhythm and completed the hook. It's like a law of nature or something, right?
Burrow has to graduate before he can be a graduate transfer. That won't happen until May. If he leaves before that he sits a year and only has one year of eligibility remaining.
That's what it sounds like. Even if Meyer has made a decision, I would think he wouldn't want Haskins to know that until after the spring game. Keep the competition going thru spring
It's possible the conversation was just the same one everyone already knew would happen. Meyer's not an idiot.
"Coach if I don't win the job I'm going to grad-transfer somewhere so I can play"
Don't understand why someone DVs you for your opinion, but whatever.
I took it as he has so much confidence with both Haskins and Burrow that he knows we'll be alright. Both have talent, experience in the system, and some (albeit limited) game experience.
That's how I read it, too.
Exactly, if it was decided already Burrow would have transferred by now. If that's what he wants to do.
In the presser he directly comes out and says that he's not concerned about QB. Just from his comments I think he's leaning a specific direction.
Sucks to hear about Bowen, hopefully it's only a minor setback. #11 #1 being out for spring should give Wade a lot more reps. Hopefully allowing Wade's star to shine more brightly this Fall.
Joey B., go to the MAC, be a super star and get drafted.
No need to settle for the MAC. Burrow has it what it takes to be a superstar on a Power 5 team, whether that's at OSU or somewhere else.
Hmmm! Play for coach Fickell as an Ohio guy, YES!!!!!!!!
I would rather be on hand with 10 men then elsewhere with 10,000 - Timur Lenk
2018 when they don't play OSU, yes. 2019, no.
Winning is a habit. Unfortunately, so is losing.
How about go compete and win the starting QB job at Ohio State.
Burrow was a highly touted QB recruit for a reason. If he transfers he at least deserves a shot at becoming the guy for a P5 team. My feeling is he'll end up at Nebraska if he transfers given his dad's ties there and Nebraska could be poised to turn things around quickly with Frost in place. It would be a good situation to walk into. I'd ideally rather not see him go to another B1G team but Nebraska doesn't play on our side of the division and I don't believe we play them again for another couple years (excluding potential B1G Championship games of course). If that's where he elects to go I wish him nothing but the best.
I thought we played them each year until 2020 or 2022. Part of matching up heavyweights across divisions for multiple years while the other two rotate. Michigan versus Wisconsin and PSU versus Iowa were a few others I thought.
We didn't play them in 2013, 2014, or 2015. Northwestern, Iowa, Purdue, Illinois, and Wisconsin were our cross-divisional matchups in 2013 and in 2014 and 2015 it was Minnesota and Illinois (not including the B1G Championship Game against Wisky). We've played Nebraska each of the last two seasons (so 2 out of 4 years since the CFB Playoff format started) so my guess would be we won't meet them again until 2020. I don't know how they structure the scheduling cross division in the B1G and I haven't looked at all of next year's schedule yet but I'm assuming Nebraska won't be on next year's schedule since we've played them in each of the last two seasons.
Big Ten schedules are out through 2021 and we play them every year.
Well I stand corrected then. But don't we play Purdue next season as well? We haven't played them since 2013 and I vaguely remember seeing them on the schedule. Can we petition to take Nebraska out and put in Iowa so we can get a little revenge for last year lol?
Purdue, Minnesota, and Nebraska.
Meyers first quotes on the QB competition should tell everyone Tate has a 0% chance of winning it.
But he said "in the mix"
The decision has already been made. It is just being played out in the public. You guys really think Urban Meyer doesn’t know who his quarterback is?
I don't think it has. Burrow and Haskins reportedly got a split amount of reps today, significantly more than Martell did I heard. The very first QB to run with the 1's today was Burrow. It's pretty wide open and we shouldn't assume that Haskins already has it. Burrow has been in the program since 2015, is very accurate, has a big arm, and has more mobility than Haskins.
I remember everyone saying it was a given that Haskins would play the B1G Title game, instead it was Barrett. Nothing is a given!
"Thayer Munford is penciled in as the starting right tackle"...biggest news of the day. Not shocking and perhaps with Bowen not 100% and Jordan out this was somewhat of a win by default. Nonetheless UM seems to have confidence in Munford.
Was thinking the same thing and hoping the Bowen news is more, let's take it slow and make sure he's 100% by fall than rush him back and have a setback.
When I was 6 I was thinking about this rivalry. This one is seared on your soul, It's ingrained through every part of your body. -Urban Meyer
Didn't they plug Alabi in when Jamarco briefly went down against Michigan?
they did in the Iowa debacle... @#$%!
16-2 is SWEET!
Please never refer to Urban as "UM" ever again.
Lol didn't even notice that. I don't want to imply Urban is an Uninsured Motorist.
"To Buckeye Nation: You have my word that I'm going to give everything I have to continue the tradition of excellence and winning that this program has enjoyed during its storied history."
Please never refer to Urban as "UM" ever again.
If you must abbreviate, please use UFM.
Our honor defend, so we'll fight to the end !
UFM... That's Coach Urban Freakin' Meyer to you.
/heh.. remembering Coach Bobby Knight getting all up in an IU student's grill... hey the Bobby also got dropped, and Coach didn't like the student's tone of voice. He probably had a point.
Called it. I predicted Munford would be in the starting lineup next season at RT. And honestly, good for him, I hope he goes out and kills it like Jamarco did. I just hope Prince switching to the blind side doesn't cause him to revert back to 2016 form. But regardless I'd much rather see Munford in the starting lineup than Alabi based on what we saw out of Alabi in small doses last season.
Its very early, but feel optimistic about the hint of locking in the left and right tackle positions
Going to be interesting what they do with Bowen when he is healthy.
He ran away with the RG competition last year, implying it wasn't all that close, so does he replace Knox or does he move to his natural tackle position and replace Munford? Better yet, does Bowen even get a starting job back with Munford developing quickly and Knox showing pretty well last year? Can Knox handle center? All interesting questions.
More depth is better. I believe we'll have difficult decisions at most position groups. That is a good thing!
Bowen didn't run away with the RG position. It was undecided entering fall camp and supposedly down to 3 guys (Bowen, Knox, Burrell) and Bowen came out victorious. Then once Bowen goes down, Knox came in and probably played better. I don't think Bowen is as elite as some players are making him out to be. He's not bad but he's also not so elite he needs to be on the field.
Urban specifically said, "It really wasn't that close to be honest with you" in a presser about Bowen winning the job. Think it's pretty safe to say he ran away with it.
Bowen was hands down the weak link on the offensive line in the first two games. He did get better as the season went on though right up until he got hurt. But Knox was good from start to finish last season when he stepped in. I'd say at this point advantage Demetrious.
Good to hear that McCall is doing well fielding punts and kicks. Rooting for the guy in that role, since the H will probably be more of a slot receiver and less of an H
The H-back more or less disappeared this past season didn't it?
for the most part. I think if you have a Curtis Samuel, you motion him into the backfield more. Jet sweeps aren't that effective anymore.
They are effective if done correctly. This is where we failed last year. If we ran a jet sweep we handed it off 100% of the time. Using it as a fake forcing the D to adjust then running back into it, or throwing to that side help keep the D guessing. Last year when a player ran it there was never a fake, just a hand-off and defenses knew, resulting in a negative play.
I will pound and pound you until you quit
- Woody Hayes
Exactly. I'd love to see more jet sweeps and other forms of pre snap motion. OSU is filled to the brim with talent at WR, H back, and RB. Heck even our projected starting TE is an athletic freak. Stuff like jet sweeps and motioning in and out of the backfield may be as important as ever this upcoming season.
Yeah, running a play action off of a jet sweep should be effective with some kind of wheel route. Defenses are selling out against the run and putting one or both safeties in the box giving them pretty good sideline-to-sideline speed. The jet sweep is kind of hard
That's the exact problem we had against Clemson. The first 3 times we tried a Jet Sweep they went all out to stop it; DE's and LBs ran up the field as hard as they could. Had Beck/Warriner paid attention at all they should have called a PA screen, or taken a shot on one of those. Instead they handed it off every time and got TFL. Look back to 2014 and watch how many successful plays we ran with Jet Sweep pre-snap motion. Between runs and passes they were wildly successful.
I for one hope Burrow stays. if Joe transfers then all it takes is one injury to decimate our QB depth, especially with Baldwin rehabbing a torn ACL.
"You're the patron saint of the totally effed" - Hot Tub Time Machine
I think everyone hopes he stays. It's just that it'll be very understandable if he decides not to.
Sounds like though both sides are prepared to move on if he loses the job. Burrow wants to play...can't blame him
Stay golden, Ponyboy.
Meyer said he expects Demario McCall to be both the kickoff and punt returner. "Had a very good day on Tuesday," and will be a full-time H-back who plays a role like Curtis Samuel this year.
2018 NATIONAL CHAMPS
Oh I'll show you lack of institutional control...
I havent been as optimistic about the talent in awhile as for this year.
were you in a coma for 2015?
More talent this year. Mike Webber was a true freshman that year, our WRs werent as established. Braxton Miller got injured and an unproven JT Barrett ended up being the starter.
Braxton Miller was at wideout. JT Barrett had been the starter the entire year before in 2014. Michael Thomas and Jalin Marshall was at wide receiver. I think you are thinking of a blend between 2015 and 2014.
This year feels different to me. We have 3 proven WRs coming back, great H back. D Line should be awesome and special teams will be special.
It is great that former Buckeye greats are back supporting their former teammates. The Brotherhood is strong.
"The minute we stop expecting greatness, we become Wisconsin."
JT hasn't missed a practice since 1986. Not ending that streak just yet.
The Prince to LT was probably my least favorite option. Nothing against him, but I thought he really had that RT spot locked down hard last year after a shaky first year as a starter. I hope moving him doesn't screw with the mental part of the game. I have faith in the staff to make the right choice. Thayer Munford stepping up and taking over at RT is no big shock. Kid was chomping at the bit for playing time.
Urban Meyer left an incredible legacy. 12/4/18 Ryan Day begins his.
Decker moved from RT to LT just fine. No reason to think Prince can't do the same.
Absolutely, Prince is the most skilled, athletic, long, and experienced OT on the roster that's not a freshman. Just like Decker, moves to Left Tackle, shows what experience does, and shows why he was a highly rated recruit and is the 1st round discussion for the 2019 draft. Prince took a giant leap last year and will not be going backwards. You don't recruit 4/5 star OTs and fight Bama off to get them so you can baby them and keep them at right tackle because they might fail at left tackle? That's crazy. Prince can handle it.
I think if NPF could challenge for the starting LT spot once he gets here.
No way a 265 lb freshman is going to start at left Tackle. He will play in blowouts, go ham in winter conditioning and fight to start the 2019 season.
I'm fine with redshirting OL guys. Let him spend every day in Mick's Dojo then he can have one of the tackle spots starting next year.
I usually don't mind redshirting OL either but if they are a 5-star and will be needed as a potential starter their sophomore year, I would rather them get some in-game experience. NPF absolutely should not be here as a RS Senior so there really is not a reason to redshirt him. He will have to concentrate a bit on the weight and strength gains
He's over 270. I'm sure he's been given a program to follow from tOSU to add strength and weight before he gets on to campus. They wouldn't rank him as the #1 tackle if they don't expect him to have any shot of playing his freshman year. I'm sure by the time he gets to campus, goes through all the summer workouts etc he could be close to 300ish by the time the season starts. (But if he doesn't add a good amount of weight, then yeah I don't see him competing for the starting spot).
That's a tough call to answer for any freshman. I wouldn't hold out on that, but hey, stranger things have happened.
From the quote it sounds like Tate isn’t getting a really look at starting. Could he just the way it’s worded but I hope the kid gets a fair shake at things. A TRUE QB competition is what’s best for everyone. Makes players better. Don’t just hand it to someone, let the true best man win. It sounds like that’s what he’s doing but let it be an open competition not just between 2 guys. But again could be just oddly worded
Dante Booker. Not transferring? Didn’t this site report last week he was transferring?
exactly what I was thinking. how do you just throw in "and Dante Booker will all miss the spring with shoulder injuries, but are expected to be back in time for the fall." without an explanation?
There HAS been explanations on 11W. If you go back to the original article written by the staff, when Alex G retracted his article, the 11W staff made note of it.
I searched “Dante booker” on here before posting and couldn’t find the article from last week.
That'll do it. While 11W is a great website overall, the search function is certainly very lacking.
If you use Google to search, you can limit your search to the 11W site by typing something like:
site:elevenwarriors.com "Dante Booker" transfer
Three things cannot be long hidden: the sun, the moon, and the truth.
I guess you missed this bullet:
On Dante Booker, after Meyer expressed displeasure with the report last week that indicated he was transferring: "He plans on being a Buckeye."
24/7 reported it first and retracted it on the same day I think. It really didn't make any sense to begin with, it's hard to believe it got as far as it did.
It's interesting listening to Urban's comments on Booker and terminating "sources" within the program. Reading between the lines, sounds like Booker may have been frustrated from his 2 shoulder surgeries and was venting to someone. That being said, even if Booker is considering transferring he's still going to say he's 100% committed to earning a spot if Urban personally asks him.
Picked up on the comment that Ryan Day will be working closely with the WR's. I like this.

Frees up Zach Smith do to what he does best...Twitter
I for one am excited by Jon Cooper starting, it shows his development as opposed to Chase's lack. I am looking forward to Cornell making the move full time and our guys having a fantastic front 2 - Deep, definitely something I could get used to, like last season!
I think Cooper starting when the games get going will not be a reality. Chase Young is going to be in that spot. Cooper will play a lot though
I don't really think it matters who is starting on the first day of spring ball. With this d-line rotation, if you're in the two deep when the season starts and are productive, you will play.
I feel bad for the poor bastard who kicks a returnable one to McCall. That man is a vapor trail with shoes.
A man got to have a code...
I hope Burrow sticks around if he's not named the starter. Sorry to hear he's considering transferring. I expect Haskins to start and while i don't believe he's the run threat Miller and Barrett were, things happen. Tate might be great, but i think you need 4 qb's with some experience going forward.
"On the NCAA's proposed change to allow kick returners to fair catch the ball in the field of play for a touchback, which would affect Meyer's typical strategy of keeping kickoffs within the field of play: "I haven't really thought about it. I'll have an opinion at some point."
The drive to emasculate football continues.
