I think the staff is all in on Jack Miller and all signs point to them landing him. He will be back on campus for the Spring game.

Miller is a total stud.  The QB's in the class(es) before him will be hard pressed to stay ahead of Jack.

Looks like the 2020 recruiting class could be as good as 2019, which is going to be as good as 2018, which was as good as 2017.

In all seriousness, thanks for the early breakdown 305.

OL is already shaping up in this class:

LT- Johnson, RT/G-Wray, RT- Dumervil, G- Rogers and possibly Pyne or even Henry if he switches over.

HS
buckslan's picture

The 2018 class of OL was a homerun despite there only being 3 bodies. Early looks say that the 2019 and 2020 class of OL are going to be quite stellar as well. Landing guys like Darnell Wright, Justin Rogers, and Paris Johnson Jr. are going to be key.

HS

I think 2017 may prove to be the same - small OL class but with a talented group.

The only ones I know for sure are Paris Johnson Jr., Michael Drennen Jr, DeaMonte Trayanum, and Darion Henry. Darvon Hubbard plays in Arizona at the same HS as Jack Miller but he's from Ohio. The only 3 Ohio kids in the 2020 class with scholarship offers right now are PJJ, Trayanum, and Henry.

From the list above, OL Justin Rogers, OL Jake Wray, DT Tre Williams, and DB Lejond Cavazos are the closest to being labeled as "Buckeye locks" IMO. With Miller, Bowman, Jalen Berger, and Darrion Henry being close to that as well. We're also in the top 2 for Brese and Paris Johnson.

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

Forgot to add that I fully believe Miller is the top QB on our staff's board regardless of class year.

HS
305Buck's picture

Wiltfong recently crystal balled Tre Williams to Ohio State. He's the 6th ranked DT in the class early on and had this to say after Ohio State offered him last month.

"It was cool," he said. "I love Ohio State. Right now, it's the place I want to be. They have the best defensive line in the country. I feel their style of play fits mine line a glove. I'm going to visit out there, I'm just not sure exactly when."

Kevin Pyne is the top ranked OT in the class, standing at 6'8.5" and weighing 275 pounds. He is another that was offered by Ohio State last month and was very happy to receive that offer. His coach has a long relationship with Day and a lot of respect for him and they plan to visit Ohio State in March along with his family. Other schools in the running are Michigan, Northwestern and Wisconsin. Michigan will be in this one till the end as well, as Pyne's coach has known Don Brown for 20+ years and trusts him a lot. His coach stated that they know Ohio State plays big time football, but they will be looking to see how Pyne fits in with the culture and how the academic side of things are when he visits.

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

Per his Twitter, OL Justin Rogers was back in Columbus today. Pretty sure he's nearing double digit visits now.

Wiltfong CB'ed Paris Johnson to Stanford the other day. Didn't like to see that, no matter how early it is in the process.

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

Paris said he's not deciding until signing day for his class. I wouldn't put any stock into 2020 crystal balls for kids deciding on NSD 2 years from now. He CB'd him to ND too.

HS
ELJTSA76's picture

I couldn’t be mad about that.  I would go to Stanford too.

HS
305Buck's picture

Demarkcus Bowman said in an interview earlier this month, that Ohio State is at the top of his list. He mentioned that he's been dreaming forever, about the day that he gets to play on Ohio State's field. He also said that his family and friends wouldn't be shocked if he commits to Ohio State because they all know how much he loves the school.

HS
305Buck's picture

Should also add that i don't see Bowman as a RB at the next level, I see him more as a Curtis Samuel type of player.

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

IMO he's a RB in college and will be the same size as Snead when he's a senior in high school. He was a soph last year. If he's the same size in 2 years I'd agree with you.

HS
305Buck's picture

True, I just love his potential in the open field and think it would be better to utilize him in multiple ways, rather than just at RB.

HS
JackieTreehorn's picture

I will be interested to see if (west Michigan ATH) Cameron Martinez gets a look. He was at Friday night lights last July, and by all accounts was one of the best receivers in the group.

Allen Treu says he’s playing at Muskegon now. They are a west Michigan powerhouse.

HS
305Buck's picture

Watched Trayanum film for the first time, wow what a player. There's a reason he's one of only 3 Ohio kids offered in the 2020 class. Beast at LB and RB.

Per Rivals Adam Gorney, AZ QB Jack Miller told him he plans to make visits to Columbus and South Carolina and should know where he wants to go after those visits. Gorney said he expects it to be the good guys :) So we may have our 2020 QB before our 2019 QB.

HS
buckslan's picture

Did it say when the visits would take place or when to expect a decision?

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

No specifics on dates and only that he would know his choice after these next 2 trips.

HS
Buckeyes20201107's picture

This may be farfetched, but any chance Miller reclassifies to 2019 if we don't find the right QB in the current 2019 class? USC got JT Daniels to do it so it may be a possibility.

HS

I'd rather push for Gunnell this year, and land Miller next. We don't lack depth at QB, so I don't see a need for this.

HS

HS
Urban_Can_Recruit's picture

Just watched some of the Southern Swing interviews from Kevin Noon and Marc Givler at Rivals (videos are posted to Noon’s YouTube channel). The one with Lejond, the 2020 CB from IMG was a little funny. He talked about how his dad and Urban and are good friends. Then they asked if it is a negative that coach Coombs left and he said not really because coach Taver Johnson used to look over him when he was little. Let’s go ahead and call that a lock!

HS
Calgarybuck's picture

Been a lock since he started HS, Still think he’ll be a safety, impressive offer list when he played varsity as a freshman in TX

HS

HS
iowabuckeyes's picture

Who said he wasn’t?

"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." - Edmund Burke

HS
BGSUBucksFan's picture

Not sure if this was what Stx was referring to, but I made a comment around the time he was hired that he'll have to prove himself on the recruiting trail because he really hasn't in his career. I said that because everyone was anointing him before he'd done anything. And I wouldn't really say this particular situation makes him a great recruiter, either. It's clear that a family connection is working in his favor here. I have confidence he'll be just fine, I just thought people should pump the brakes on the expectations. Coombs was a magician and history says we won't sustain that level of success (5* after 5* into 1st rounder after 1st rounder) without him.

HS
Buckster's picture

imo Deamonte Trayanum will be a Running Back in college wherever he goes.  He has RB talent, speed and also believe he prefers RB.

HS
Calgarybuck's picture

He’s going to be a stud, can’t wait

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

IMO if he wants in next year's class he may want to get on board wth the idea of coming in as an ATH at the very least. To me he's a shorter version of Steele Chambers right now. He's not on the same level as Evans, Milton, Lloyd, Toafili, Bowman, or even Darvon Hubbard at RB on film. And we can land one or more of those guys next year. If he comes here I just don't see how it's at RB and not LB like I still feel where Chambers ends up.

HS
BengalErnst's picture

Completely agree with Spooner. Him and Chambers both will be Lbs here.

Spooner, who are the Lbs in this class in your opinion?

Nicholas l Ernst

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

Still too early to say but I think it starts with Derek Wingo from STA in FL should be a solid 4* type 6-2 210lbs already. I would also add 5* stud Mekail Sherman as well. Though at 6-3 235 right now he could easily end up at WDE. Insiders may not be giving us much of a chance but he's close with Wingo and Cavazos plus Wray will be recruiting him too. Plus we are his dream school. It all comes down to if our staff takes Wingo and how early they'd take him bc he and Wray are about as good a leaders a class can have - lots of high rated kids they're close with and have the respect of in next year's class.

HS
Buckeyes20201107's picture

How do you see DE's turning out in this class? Looks to me like there are several bigger SDE's that could grow into DT's (Bresse, Darrion Henry, Jacolbe Cowan), and a few bigger OLB's that could grow into DE's (Sherman, Jaheim Thomas, Jaylen Harrell).

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

Damn I forgot to add Jaheim Thomas to the LB's so I would go with him and Wingo so far at LB. For DE I'd say Sherman and someone like Fadil Diggs or even Demon Clowney (Jadeveon's cousin and provided we offer him) both from MD. But guys like Bresee/Cowan could always stop growing and end up at SDE. Henry can end up at SDE, DT, or OT just no way to know for sure right now. I'd say DL for him bc I believe we will land 5* OT Turner Corcoran and Paris Johnson next year at the very least we will land 1 of them and my preference would be Corcoran who has the goods to be No. 1 overall in the class next year.

HS
BumJuiceIsBitter's picture

Didn't realize Corcoran was such an elite prospect

I tried bum juice once, it was bitterly disappointing.

HS

Sounds like a move to get Garrett Wilson to flip to Texas. Hudson Card hasn't even started a game at QB if I'm not mistaken.

HS

He’s an elite level athlete though. He was lake Travis number two receiver last year. Would have loved to have gotten him.

HS
Beantown_Buckeye's picture

Card is a top QB prospect. Texas isn't using their 2020 QB slot in order to flip Wilson. OSU offered Card too and his offer list is impressive. He's the top TX QB right now for that cycle so he makes complete sense for them. They take some risk that he hasn't been the starter but thats happened before. I remember Tate Martell's backup Dorian Thompson-Robinson was highly recruited before he ever started a HS game. He ended up being the 3rd ranked QB in 2018.

Ryan Donnelly is pretty dialed in on CB's. Recently tabbed OSU CB's for OT Turner Corcoran out of Kansas and OG Luke Wypler out of New Jersey.

Brian Dohn also put in a CB for Wypler to Ohio State.

2020 OL class could be really damn good.

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

Yeah I think next year's OL class is going to be special. I would predict Corcoran and Johnson as tackles with Wray as a swing T/G type and Wypler an interior guy. Land those 3 to go with Wray and it's the best OL class in the nation not only next year but it would be this year.

HS
Cincybuckeye's picture

Despite the family’s Columbus roots, Branham’s grandfather was a diehard Michigan fan.

Following his commitment to Michigan, Branham posted on Twitter: “Now, I want my dude Paris Johnson to join the winningest team in college football history, the Harvard of the Midwest. Go Blue! Come be a Michigan Man for Life. Our dads know each other.”

That was Branham’s second directed at Johnson, coming five minutes after Branham tweeted: “My guy looks like a Michigan man. We need you. Let’s go be the next 2020 you know you position always goes high in the draft from Michigan. 2 Ohio boys.”

Looks like 24/7 just released what I believe is their first 2020 composite ranking (as opposed to their own ranking). I guess this means some other site released their first 2020 ranking? Or maybe 24/7 just now got around to putting it together to make the composite ranking.

Some notables:

Bryan Bresee: #1
Paris Johnson: #8
Justin Rogers: #13
Jack Miller: #58 (#3 among pro-style QBs)

It’s because rivals released their first 2020 rankings. The composite is just made by a program that combines all of the rankings on the 3 main sites and basically averages them. Since 247 is now no longer the only site with 2020 rankings, there can be a composite

HS

Keep in mind this is wayyyy to early but from what I've read on kids we're at the top or near the top for I'd go with:

QB: Jack Miller
RB: Darvon Hubbard
HB: Jalen Burger or Michael Drennen
WR: Devell Washington or Jordan Johnson or AJ Henning or Chris Scott
TE: Clay Caudill and Luke Lachey (complete guesses)
OT: Paris Johnson and Turner Corcoran
OT/G: Justin Rogers and Jake Wray
G/C: Luke Wypler
DE: Jaheim Thomas and Kedrick Bingley-Jones or Mekhail Sherman or Bryan Bresee
DT: Tre Williams and Darrion Henry
LB: Derek Wingo, DeaMonte Trayanum, And Antoine Sampah
DB: Miles Brooks, Henry Gray, Lejond Cavazos, and RJ Mickens or Jaylon Jones
K/P: Hopefully some Aussie

HS

Those DBs and OL paired with Jack Miller would make me real giddy.

AL also introduced use to Sav'ell Smalls in the Hurry-Up last night. #3 player in the '20 class and half of his family lives in Ohio. Definitely not the favorite, but it seems like there's some legit interest. That'd give us 3 potential top-10 players.

HS
Buckeyes20201107's picture

Michael Mayer, Caden Clark, Lukas Ungar, and Sam Daugstrup are other TE's to look for. Mayer is likely a tOSU vs ND battle.

HS

You can forget Clark that ain't happening for obvious reasons. Mayer is likely ND bound.

I want Bresee bad in this class. That dude is an absolute beast. His highlights you can’t help but laugh watching them.

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

IMO Darrion Henry from OH has the potential to match Bresee. Don't be surprised if he's top 50 on the next update. If also throw Buckeye lean DT Tre Williams in the same convo as he reminds me some of Christian Wilkins but maybe slightly smaller (he's still 6-3 305). Would also have to include both Mekhail Sherman who's Parsons-esque and Savell Smalls who's ridiculous in his own right. Overall the 2020 class has as the potential to be the best overall not just our commits but overall since Urban arrived in Cbus. It's disgustingly loaded at crucial positions.

HS
iowabuckeyes's picture

Sherman and Williams are HS teammates; in fact, of the top 11 players in the DC area, eight of them play for St. John's College HS and five are ranked among the top 214 players in the 247 Composite. From looks of it, their entire team must've gone to PSU's camp last weekend.

Idk. You gotta think, whoever replaces him is gonna inherit an extraordinary amount of talent. So if a young coach comes in and replaces him, he'll have a chance to look great while he still has Johnsons recruits. Could kickstart a career for a DL coach

One of the top prospects in the state of Michigan for 2020. He's currently ranked as the #3 prospect in the state. The 2 above him? Well #1 is Justin Rogers from Oak Park (we all know where this recruitment is going), and #2 is Enzo Jennings... also from Oak Park. Seems like Ohio State is doing pretty well with the top 3 prospects in the state for 2020. I don't know much about Enzo Jennings but if Dwan Mathis is a Buckeye and Justin Rogers is a Buckeye/huge lean, that's only going to work in our favor.

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

Must get IMO. Potential difference maker that I compare to Christian Wilkins at this stage. Really good chance he ends up a 5* at some point. Good thing is the guys we have committed and will be committed soon will really help here even though Tre already loves him some Buckeyes.

HS
ajskiba23's picture

Lejond Cavasos tweeted that he had a surprise for Buckeye Nation this weekend and Derek Wingo responded back saying “I know what it is.” If someone could embed as I’m on my phone, please do.

Also, Wingo has put up a series of tweets in the last 30 hours or so that it seems like he’s a silent or about fully ready to be a Buckeye. He’s about damn near recruiting for us.

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

Wingo played a lot of QB last year so there's not much tape on him at LB, which is why there will be a little bit of time before he commits. But make no mistake he's 100% lock to be a Buckeye once the staff gets to see him play LB. Apparently he was really good at FNL. Again at this point it's a matter of when not if with Derek who has dreamed of being a Buckye for awhile now.

HS

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

That's 2 down with Jake and Paris. Turner Corcoran, Justin Rogers, Luke Wypler....you're up next

HS
NHBuckeye's picture

I am assuming that Rogers would come in as a Guard.   Do you see Corcoran or Wypler coming on board as a 3rd Tackle in the class?

I was also thinking that young Wray could possibly slide inside.  So much flexibility / versatility with many of the guys we are landing.

Fields of Dreams

HS
Northbrook's picture

Wypler is an inside guy in my eyes. As is Rogers. Wray is the guy who could do either. Add another true OT and Wypler and Rogers and you have quite a class.

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

Actually Rogers has the ability to play tackle he has that kind of upper body strength and feet already. Wypler is almost a clone of Harry Miller just an inch or 2 shorter so he's inside guy all the way. Corcoran would be a tackle and with Paris in the fold could be a RT type. IMO I think Turner has just as much potential as Paris does at tackle. Both are elite and if you could build a tackle from scratch they would look exactly like Turner and Paris

HS

HS

He's definitely a take. Wingo will probably be a top 100 player once he gets more game experience.

HS
BengalErnst's picture

I agree that he’s going to be a take but I feel like the staff wants to see more from him hence the usage of the word yet in my post

Nicholas l Ernst

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

Been reported not a take yet due to not having really any LB film to this point. He played QB last year. He was really good at FNL but the staff needs to see at least some tape at LB. Will be a Buckeye by the end of the fall IMO so not a big deal either way.

HS
NHBuckeye's picture

Well since Miller had already said he was announcing this weekend, I'll say the surprise is Justin Rogers.

Fields of Dreams

HS

Now that Battle has committed, I would guess this is the surprise Wingo knew about since they are team mates. Spooner, you should put together a big board for this 2020 class. It could be really special

Nicholas l Ernst

HS
BucknutinNC's picture

Wanted to ask either of the Andrew's or Spooner who obviously have more insight into this recruiting stuff than me a couple of related questions:

A) What is the likelihood that the Buckeyes could land both Bresee and Henry in the 2020 class, because both are listed as SDE's and both so elite?

B) Looking at the difference in their sizes, and comparing Henry's size to some WDE's is Henry capable of playing the week side?

Obviously with the way Larry Johnson has developed the rushmen package where he slides the best DL on the roster all along the front its definetly consevable for them to be on the field at the same time, but I was just wondering about every down situations and such. Also the thought of Harrison, Bresee, Potter and Henry lining up as a possible future package looks pretty exciting!

A.E. Porter

HS
Hanawi_'s picture

Think it's more likely that Henry slides inside than plays as a weakside end. His teammate, Jaheim Thomas, will probably end up as a weakside DE though. He seems to be similar to Stover, where they may be athletic enough to be a LB, but their best position may be DE.

HS
BucknutinNC's picture

Thanks Hanawi, good stuff

A.E. Porter

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

Hanawi's answer above is spot on. I think both Bresee and Henry have a chance to end up as 3 tech DT's bc they just keep growing. Of the 2 Bresee more likely to stay at SDE.

HS
Andrew Lind's picture

I agree, as well, though I don’t foresee Bresee being a defensive tackle. Two ends (Bresee, Thomas) and two tackles (Henry, Williams).
