JT......love those initials in Ohio State recent history. Had no idea that his shooting percentage was so high. Glad to see him leave on such a high note after several difficult years.

The pain of discipline or the pain of regret, take your pick

What a player & leader!

I wish Tate could do a Vulcan mind meld with all the underclassmen on this team.

I think JT has dethroned DLo as my all-time favorite Basketbucks player. I'm gonna miss this guy so much and I'm so glad he gets to experience a season like this after all the crap he's had to endure the past couple of years.

JT has very much been the David Lighty of this current Buckeye team. Steady, dependable and able to do whatever it takes to give his team the best chance to win.

Tate has been my favorite Ohio State basketball player all 4 of his years because he works hard and does the little things to make his team better.  For JT, it is not about personal accolades, it is about the team.  That has definitely spilled to the whole team this season.  Jae'Sean will definitely be missed.

I'm so happy that things have finally come together for his senior year.  He made his impact felt as a freshman, and I remember being surprised when I discovered he was "only" 6'4."  Right from the start he was never shy about mixing it up down low with the trees, and he usually came out on top.  Then his sophomore year things were going not great, but OK, until he got hurt in that late season game at Nebraska.  If he had been able to finish out the year the team would have ended up in the tournament, not the NIT.  Then last year, even with the world crashing around him, he still gave 100% every single minute of every single game.  And you tell he was really trying to inject life into that team, but for whatever reasons the chemistry just never developed. Then this year he just decided to take over, and along with getting his buddy KBD back, he just wasn't going to let his time here end on a sour note.  We've been lucky to see great players come through this program and there will be many more in years to come, but I don't know that we will see anyone quite like Tate.  He successfully played all 5 positions on the floor at various times, in major college basketball.  That does not just happen, in fact it almost never happens, you have to be a special kind of player to not only be able to do that, but to earn the trust of your coaches to be put in those situations. Let's hope we get to see him for 10 move victories in scarlet and gray!

Yes, there were issues on that team, but let us not speak ill of the departed.

OK, I go back a ways and I'm going to list my Last-60-years scrap/hustle/effort team:

  • John Havilchek
  •  Jaesean Tate
  •  Aaron Craft
  • David Lighty
  • Gary Bradds.

My Dad was just telling me his favorite 5 Buckeyes of all time at the Rutgers game. He had the first 4 you mentioned and Mike Conley.

I told him I was surprised with Conley as a choice since he only played one year. He responded that 'he never wanted a player to stay longer' than him.

I play, coach stays. He goes, I go.

Can we add Jerry Lucas as our 6th man?

This list must be flawed.  I don't see Amir Williams on your list.

Go Bucks!

He has represented the university and basketball team as well as anyone can!

Love it or leave it!

As good as Keita is, the wheels on the bus don't go round and round without JT. Thank you, young man.

Yeaaaaaah! Go Tate! He has been such a great player, always bringing the energy and really fueling this team, one that is finally having the kind of season he deserved to be having the last 3 years.

-Yeah, Baby!

Tate has been a breath of fresh air with his give insanely high Give a Damn Factor even with playing with Amir Williams and Marc Loving. I dont know how he did it.

A great Buckeye and no doubt the glue that holds this unit together.

My only real issue with him is he is essentially the same guy he was when he got here, ie excellent around the hoop, plays taller than his listed height, but as a jump shooter etc has never improved.

If you look at his stats they are remarkably consistent. Using stats on a 40 min basis from sports-reference.com, not much has changed or improved year to year.

scoring has been 16.0, 16.1, 17.9, and 16.8

Rebounding is 9.1, 8.8, 8.0 and 8.3, FG% is 59%, 52%, 55% and 56%, His 3 Pt shooting is 16%, 35%, 22% and 25%, his FT shooting is 52%, 52%, 57% and 59%

Love the guy love his hustle, but if he could have developed a solid jumper to go with that low post game, he might be a lottery pick.

HS
jpfbucks01's picture

The guy he kind of reminds me of although I think Tate is better is Jerry Francis, also a hustle monster, part of the glue of those teams and an undersized forward at 6'5" who battled every night.

Tate is currently 14 points behind Francis in all time points,

Tate is a better post scorer and rebounder where Francis was bit better on the perimeter and passing, but very similar guys

HS
IGotAWoody's picture

I think his defense has improved, and clearly he's developed into the unquestioned leader of his team. So he has DEFINITELY developed over his 4 years.

His biggest improvement would be ball handling, his second would be off ball defense. Tate in my opinion is a now a small forward, where as when he came he was an undersized 4 who could not stretch the floor. Now with KBD defending the 4 and Tate guarding anyone from the 1 to the 3, we are a MUCH tougher defense!

I would rather be on hand with 10 men then elsewhere with 10,000 - Timur Lenk

TOSU is going to miss Tate terribly. Great performance this season. He and KBD are the heart of your team. They will leave a huge hole, a crater Holtmann is going to be hard pressed to fill.

I wish we got to see JT play next to Aaron Craft, that would have been absolute insanity. No one would have wanted to play that team.  That would be the opposing guards nightmare.

If you ain’t first you’re last

Yes I can only hope that Tate through Scoonie Penn, plays with the guys and they come back to play in The Basketball Tournament! Tate would be an amazing addition!

I was always worried that he wouldn't be appreciated sufficiently until he left. I'm glad to see him get the attention while he's still here. He's been a great player and representative for Ohio State.

HS

If only he could shoot the 3 and especially free throws. But as for hustle very few will match him. He is in the top 5 of players I have seen play basketball for the Buckeyes that played with hustle and heart.

WTG JT I have enjoyed watching you play for the Buckeyes.

I've always been an unabashed fan boy of Evan Turner, but Tate's done everything he can to sway my vote.

When it comes to football, nobody is ever going to tell me there was a better one than Braxton Miller. Sorry, I don't care! Braxton and Tate are two dudes who gave it all they had 100% of the time, the kind of dudes who make you proud to be a fan of the team you cheer for

He ain't even stretch doe!!

Heart and soul of the team.....though a little awkward watching the two dudes hugging in the background at the 4:00 mark of the Senior Night speech.
