What Ohio State's Surprising Loss to Penn State Means As The Regular Season Winds Down

From what I’ve seen with Holtmann, I believe that they will.

One thing I am confident in is that there will be no letdown from an effort standpoint.

Kaleb Wesson will have to get his lower body injury sorted out, and Kam will have to get back in rhythm, and the team as a whole needs to avoid foul trouble.

No matter what, though, I see them coming out strong and working hard for the whole game at Michigan.

In old Ohio there's a team that's known throughout the land...

My concern is that we seemed to be running our offensive sets from half court in the first half. PSU was playing so aggressive, even overplaying the passing lanes at times, and seemingly pushed us out and made us very uncomfortable. We needed a point guard in the first half to settle us down offensively, and that’s just not who CJ is.

HS
UrbanCulture's picture

Guard play has to improve. Jackson played decently today, but Dakich, A. Wesson, Kam, and Jallow were all nonfactors today.

HS
WorthyBuck's picture

Unfortunately, none of those guys is really any better than they showed.  Dakich is a walk-on talent.  Cam is just a shooter and nothing more.  A Wesson is a 3 am with limited offensive abilities, and Jallow is a frosh who seems limited offensively.  Jackson is our only decent guard.

Well now that you "put it that way" which can be countedon I will proceed to to selfdash all those deluded perceptions I've clung too regarding this team and its potential. Lol

HS

Ditto, Blackcoffee:  as my feelings leap and drop... so goes my team in my "put it that way" reality....

Yet we 'cling' but for a few moments to each "deluded perception" - be cuz we are fantasizing desperately to conjur up the next one....

it is 'so unfair' that a bad habit takes but one rep to form.

And he may be the streakiest shooter of them all WorthyBuck.  (Jackson)

It always seems to take a while to get him warmed up.  Of course evryone was sleep walking most of the game, and no one ever found any rythym.  I was having flashbacks of playing a championship game against an Urban lead Florida Gator squad.

Michigan has s tendency to wilt against good defense. But osu will need to play 20 times better

Stay golden, Ponyboy.

Just beat Michigan. Quick turnaround. Play with some fight on Sunday.

HS
UrbanCulture's picture

Also is it just me, or has OSU had an inordinate amount of really, really bad missed shots. Like not even close. CJ is culprit on some of these, but KBD has had his fair share as well. Can't remember a season with this many that just aren't even close.

HS
PhillyNut's picture

Last night the Buckeyes were taking bad shots late into the clock. Penn State's defense was good but not that good but the level of aggressiveness was not being met by taking advantage of the overplay. Not sure I saw one true screen by the Buckeyes last night. And the players off the ball were really not making their defender work to stay with them.

I don't buy one goddam drop of gas in the state of Michigan!

HS
tcm1968's picture

I think we'll be fine. The B10 is just like basketball as a whole this season. There isn't a "special" team and anyone can get anyone on any night. Having said that they can't stand around waiting for KBD to save them. KBD was BAD for most of the game and in a blink of an eye the game got out of hand. Zero response after getting hit in the mouth...

Go Bucks!

How Penn State got a player as good as Tony Carr will be one of life’s greatest mysteries.

HS
buckzilla1's picture

Dakich needs to shoot the god damn ball. 12 footers should be gimmies. Use the backboard if you need to. Being a threat to shoot makes them play defense on you and not clog up lanes and double team others. Scoring opens up everyone and right now, nobody respects Dakich's ability to score. He is the key to our success with our big runs and he needs to contribute with scoring.

You never lose to those pricks. Ever. Ever. Urban Frank Meyer

I believe coach Holt told him exactly that at one point last night.  Dakich had a nice drive into the lane with shot clock winding down.  Instead of shooting the 10 footer, kicked it WAY out to Wesson w 2 seconds left to force a deep 3, very low % compared to the shot he had.  The look on coaches face said it all and he immediately pulled Andrew over for a word.

I figured the Bucks might lose this one, and they did. Now beat TTUN and all is forgiven. Guard play is an issue at the wrong time of the year, though. Bummer. Holtmann will square it away.

Keita Bates-Diop absolutely NEEDS to take over games like this, but he just didn't have it tonight.  His game translates to the NBA with his post-up game, but Josh Reaves figured out his kryptonite.

Wow, that was pretty hard to watch. When Carr and Garner are tossing anything and everything into the basket, no comebacks are possible. Disappointed to lose like that, but I imagine Michigan St. said the same thing after we blitzed them. Michigan on the road will be another tough one, but I'm expecting a much better effort. The difficulty of winning on the road and our ability of overcome that reminds everyone of just what a great season this has been to date.

This is the danger of the 3 point shot. When a team can hit a few they can close a big deficit quickly a la NBA. But when they don’t fall, a team has to recognize it, work the ball and drive the hoop. Otherwise they keep hoisting threes and the deficit grows to 45-21 , which is unmanageable.

PSU was stuck at 25 for at least 5 minutes and the Buckeyes could only manage to close the gap from 25-10 to 25-14 because they kept hoisting and missing.

Need to recruit an athletic big man. The Penn State center is way more athletic than Wesson. Wesson will be good off the bench. Also have to recruit a play making guard.

We have a long way to go!

Re-group time. Holtmann will need to reel the good guys back in from wherever they drifted off to last night.

You are absolutely correct, Mr. B. OSU is not very talented, outside of KBD. TATE gets by because of his toughness, strength, and never-say-die attitude, but will never even sniff the NBA. I've been simply amazed at what Holtmann has been able to do with this group. We have been winning games over teams who have more overall talent than us.

"Ohio State might need Kam Williams' scoring boost"

It did not look like Kam picked up a basketball during his time off. I really expected him to play with some fire after suffering through a suspension. He was lost out there. Would like to see Kyle Young get more minutes...he played with fire.

OSU needs guard in a big way. Consistent guards that don't disappear for long stretches.

15-1 is SWEET!

HS
bucksfan92's picture

Absolutely shocking.  Doubly shocking after what happened in the game here.  My brain just cannot process what happened last night. It makes ZERO sense.  But we got some help from Wisky and let's hope Northwestern gives us some help this weekend.  If we win @Michgian and MSU loses @NW that will wrap up no worse than a share of the B1G, and for historical purposes I'd rather share a title (if we have to) with MSU vs Purdue, since that would put us back in a tie with them for most B1G titles of any program at 23.  As it stands right now we are not going to do any worse than a tie for second and we own all tiebreakers, but to be this close to the finish line, it would be nice to finish the job off.

Has it occurred to you that at this point of the season, PSU just might be a better team than us?

HS
Sanantonefan's picture

I thing coach Holtmann was correct when he said that they are a matchup problem for us Maybe they are better at this point in the season. However, they have 9 losses, some to teams we beat like Maryland, Wisconsin, IU, and MSU. We'll see how the season plays out.

We have overachieved in a way none of us thought possible before the season. However, winning the B1G would still be sweet, no matter what PSU does.

KDB needs to be a tougher...his glide to the middle for a finesse shot and not be able to handle any ball pressure shows he needs a lot of time in the weight room and another year to play more physically because he gets dominated by a physical defense...and Holt should tell Tate if he ever shoots another three point shot because he is lazy in passing the ball he will get benched...he is horrible outside the arc yet settles when the ball stops moving....and we really need CJ to start the offense much sooner and quit dribbling to just past half court and waiting for something to happen....he is the point guard and one assist say it all....this looked a lot like the team we thought we may have at the start of this season.

HS
Horvath22's picture

Excellent analysis, BD, on KBD, Tate, and CJ. On KBD, don't think that NBA scouts, coaches, and GM's don't see the same thing. I have been secretly hoping that KBD would come back next year to add 10-15 lbs of muscle to his frame, and become more physical, and a lottery pick.

HS
Icouldnotgofor3's picture

2-15 from three point land will usually get you beat. Penn State's kryptonite is a zone defense. Surprised we didn't utilize it more.

Simply put the Buckeyes will struggle against good teams that have their mojo working. Ped U was a step faster last night and it was not close.

Ped U was also collapsing on everything inside and the Bucks were taking bad shots rather than firing it out to an open guy. Work needs to be done there. Don't know where Jackson's shot has gone but we need it back especially when KBD is doubled teamed. Most teams are well aware of Tate's stuff now, and gear up to stop him inside.

TTUN is having a "shitty yellow out" so we likely will be facing another game where a team plays over it's head. Predict it will go down to the wire - good luck Buckeyes!

First and goal at the five and Arch is getting the ball.

an "off night" is a statistician's lifeless "staple", and intro to old familiar narratives....

What we had shown signs of lately ... small gaps in our game "energy & hustle"... Penn St turned themselves into a river of out-hustling and us into a bunch of clod-hopping, out-of-control reacting.

our 'focus' transferred from that "edge" our players had believed in and fed themselves with... to ...the usual distractions.

This is what it looks like when your 'heart'... 'takes a break' to pump itself up.

Could be something and then again, it might mean nothing, but it seems the chemistry of the team over the past three games was outstanding, but seemed to wilt once Kam was back from suspension ??  it might be that the team played harder, to compensate for Kam's absence and then once he came back, there seemed to be, "a disturbance in the force" !!

What also didn't help was once Wesson dominated the first few minutes and had the Buck's only points, he then had to be helped from the court and it just seemed that PSU smelled blood and went on a major run .....

Frankly speaking, regardless of how the rest of the season goes, this team and what the coach has done to put OSU basketball back to a respectable level, has far exceeded anyone's expectations and I'm just glad that their hard work has paid off .....

HS
funky123's picture

Again, like with Matta, no zone defense. If they are going to be successful in the tourney they will have to be able to play both. Especially when our guards can't keep up with the other teams.

HS

The game with TTUN Sunday was huge before and now is really big.  I cannot wait to see how this team responds to the most adversity they have faced in the conference season.  Coaches and players must step up big time!

HS
RMLogic's picture

Come tournament time this team has no chance to win if KBD does not play well. There just is no other player that is consistent offensively that they can count on. It is like when Russell carried the team to a win over VCU. Then the next game he got shut down and the team had no chance of winning.

It is just so hard to win when you have 5 players- AWesson, Jallow, Potter, Dakich, Young that are very poor offensive players.

And Jackson's play recently has not been good either. Last nite he missed shots by a mile.

It is a miracle that Holtmann has this team where they are in the standings.

Kenpom has Michigan favored to win by a point, 56% probability of winning. Home court helps. That sounds about right, but OSU has seemed unbeatable to me. Several factors I see:

  • 3 point shooting. Will Duncan Robinson hit them for Michigan? Michigan could not buy a three in Columbus. Their 3 point shooting is pretty pedestrian this year.
  • Switching on defense for OSU. Michigan has not dealt well with this, along with zone D, but is getting better. This game will tell us a lot.
  • Guard play. Xavier Simpson can't hit a FT to save his life, and doesn't drive Michigan's offense. But he is good defensively. Several teams have fouled the heck out of Simpson at the end of the game. But OSU's depth may cause this to be a challenging strategy.
  • Rebounding. Michigan has been very good at getting defensive rebounds, along with limiting turnovers. If they greatly limit OSU's second chance points, and transition offense, along with hitting threes, it will be difficult for OSU to win.

This game has huge implications for both teams. Michigan desperately needs a quadrant 1 win, at home. It will massively affect seeding for the tourney. OSU needs to win in order to win the conference, and not have a two game losing streak. The implications for seeding aren't as great, but you definitely don't want to lose two games in a row. Should be good.
