Solid hire with Taver.  Proven

I know right? Watch both the guys that don’t like him try to go down to the oval and Schiano him.

It’s fine to express your own opinion (as long as it’s the same as mine) but I don’t get the nagativity so early. Even Beck got two years before he was hated. Can’t Taver get two days?

I’ve never intentionally given a DV, but I certainly have fat fingered a few on my phone.

I know for certain my are fat fingers since I have never DV’ed anyone by intention. So far my ratio is about 300 UV’s per 1 fat finger DV.

Taver may bring good energy every day, but Coach Coombs reinvented the word ENERGY

HS
BuckInNashville's picture

JK

just last night I had the good fortune of meeting Kerry Coombs at the Costco in West Nashville. My wife told me to go down the wine aisle and pick out some gems, and I’m putting a bottle of Pinot in the cart. Here he comes with a very cool Titans logo spider ski jacket and he’s built tight like a tiger.

i look up and I say “coach Coombs, I’m a huge buckeye fan”.  The guy stops in his tracks and starts asking ME questions. “Where are you from, why are you here, where do you work ?”  I swear I felt like he was as interested in meeting me as I was him. No wonder these kids are drawn to play for the Buckeyes. There is an energy about him, but it’s more of a positivity than it is an electricity. Very glad to have met a person like that.

big big shoes to fill from a recruiting standpoint. Glad to hear former players voucher for Taver in the energy department.

Very cool story BiN... That must have been awesome.

Be honest... How much Red Bull was in his cart?

That’s hilarious Bradenton  - come to think of it - he had no cart. So maybe his wife sent him down the wine aisle as well !

my wife is from Sarasota - we spend a lot of time there with her family. hope to see you soon.

That's a great story.  I know- I'm over a week late to the commenting party- been sick.
I think I would have first thanked him for everything he did for the Buckeyes and then asked why decided to make a move to the NFL.  Would love to know more about his decision.

I am confused by this hire. What has he done since 2012? While at OSU, do you realize how poorly he recruited the greater Cleveland area? great, a high energy coach...sounds like he’d make a great gym teacher too :)

So does he get credit for Jermale Hines, Christian Bryant, Marcus Hall, John Simon, Boom Herron, CJ Barnett, Doran Grant, Devin Smith, Cardale Jones, and Corey Linsley?

No, because that would blunt the point being made.

You’re funny! Somehow Tressel pipeline to Glenville well established before Taver arrived, yet he closed the Grenville recruits?? Right!?!  Geography update, Youngstown is well east of Cleveland...territory was handled by Fickell. What else you have?

Taver Johnson stuck a pin the back of the voodoo dolls of McVey and Fellows to cause them to quit football due to chronic back issues? Do you say stuff in public/at your job that is as dumb as the stuff you have said in this thread?

HS
Etenim's picture

What precisely is your concern - that Johnson forgot how to coach and motivate DBs in the interim?

How likely is that? Especially considering how well-regarded he was at both Arkansas - where he was named interim HC after John L. Smith was fired; at Purdue, where he coached three seasons under Darrell Hazell and where his work there led to a career advancement up to DC at Temple. Hazell on Johnson getting the DC job at Temple: "I think that is a great hire and he will bring a lot of experience and expertise to Temple. I think he has a tremendous amount of passion around the kids and they will feed off that."  In his one year at Temple the 1st and 2nd team All-AAC safeties were from the Temple defense.

I'm just not certain what people would expect to see on his resume from that time in the brief stints he had after OSU.

I'm also not sure how it is that Urban Meyer's imprimatur - and now that of one of his former pupil's in the article above - isn't enough to convince anyone that this is a great hire.

HS
rblackbu's picture

If Johnson had no prior history with OSU, you’d be pumped about bringing on a coach that was part of a terrible Arkansas staff, horrible Purdue team and Temple, who is more famous for Bill Cosby and packs 10,000 fans into Eagles stadium for a home game...yes!!!!  What has he done since 2012?  What did he even do while at OSU other than bomb recruiting Cleveland area?

Said recruiting area was debunked above ^

Jermale Hines, Christian Bryant, Marcus Hall, John Simon, Boom Herron, CJ Barnett, Doran Grant, Devin Smith, Cardale Jones, and Corey Linsley. One could probably go on for hours, but he did in FACT recruit the area at that time. But no use arguing with a troll with no facts!

Not my DV.

I'd love to entertain the notion of evaluating Johnson as if his time at OSU never occurred  - but it did. And taken together with the regard shown him by his three employers I have to conclude he's a damn good hire.

Re: Temple football, I've been an observer and sometime fan for decades, and what I know is that they've put players in the NFL at a surprising clip for much of that time. In fact, right now (as listed at ESPN) they have 16 players on NFL rosters. This is nothing new. Temple's currently on a historically good run with three straight bowl games, but even when they've been horrid, they've had very talented players go on to the NFL. A bad team didn'tt spoil the talents of those quality players. Which is not unlike bad staffs at Arkansas or Purdue not having spoiled Tavar Johnson's abilities to coach DBs at a high level.

Pretty sure when he goes to cash that check he’ll ask the teller to give you a call to make sure it’s ok.

He is the 10th assistant! Urbz just filling a few gaps. No need to become a Volunteer fan

You know what he has done? Impressed Urban Meyer. That he doesn't impress you is a quark like burden.

"You're welcome for the house I built."

HS
0H-10's picture

Yeah, Rb; I get that. All I can say is, you'll have to trust the process. Coach Meyer did nothing from late 2009 to 2012 either, but he seems to have come out of that period refocused and redefined as a coach who knows who he is and what he wants from his team. He's earned the option of making a few mistakes too (if this is one, which I doubt). I choose to believe that next year at this time we'll be celebrating another National Championship, and Johnson's CBs will have been awesome on the road to that success!

Chimdi's testimony is a plus.

His circumstances of leaving tOSU and multiple stints elsewhere at roughly the same staff level... are worth looking into for first-hand information.

Meanwhile, Welcome Coach Johnson!  TODAY is a new day.

Guys

its ok for some to question a hire. Especially when replacing someone like Coombs who I actually met last night -(check my post above for that interaction). So it’s very easy to be concerned because no one can or will be Kerry Coombs.

its also alright to question UFM - he isn’t batting 1.000 with coaching hires. Although he has a lot of at bats because when he does hit, its gold, and they move on (Herman, Ash, Coombs - and of course, LJ who stayed) So let’s all sit back and see how he handles some of the best CBs in the nation.

Here's to hoping Taver turns Arnette into the next Chekwa going into next season. The fact that Chekwa was an utterly unheralded 3-star recruit coming in and yet Taver was able to turn him into an elite lockdown corner by his senior year definitely speaks well to his credentials. I seem to remember also in 2007 (the beginning of Taver's first tenure here) Malcolm Jenkins taking a huge leap in coverage ability from his FR year in 2006. That also is a good sign. We could be due to see great things from Arnette and Sheffield next season and I really can't wait to see what Taver is able to do with guys like Okudah, Wade, Tyreke Johnson, and Sevyn Banks. Don't know how hands on he is with the safety position though or if that will be more Grinch's job to develop the safeties but I seem to remember Kurt Coleman played during Taver's first tenure here. That could be another good sign.

11 Strong.
