To reaffirm, J.K. Dobbins is the man.

Also happy to read LJSR is equally as happy to stay in Columbus.

Serves Carman right for buying into Swinney's lies about Urban's "imminent retirement." This extension they're finalizing all but confirms that Dabo's assumption was inaccurate and nothing more than a shady recruiting tactic. Hopefully Carman tastes sweet karma at Clemson soon enough just like Kyle Kalis did when he fled up north after the Tattoogate scandal broke and attempted to take more recruits with him.

I'd focus my shade on Swinney more than Carmen, but over it in all honesty.

Today's a fine day to celebrate who the Buckeyes are, rather than who they are not.

Vicious rumor-mongering this recruiting cycle:

Hints about Larry Johnson getting long in the tooth and his imminent retirement;

UFM and how long he will be around;

Greg Schiano heading to the NFL.

Who's laughing now ye sowers of lies?

HS
fear_the_nut70's picture

I believe William said Meyer’s career was on the downside which is not the same as retiring.  That is definitely more subjective.

I have always said I want the kids that want to be Buckeyes.  Carman rubbed me the wrong way with his tweets and his fake indignity over people assuming an Ohio kid would want to be a Buckeye and I am glad he went elsewhere.  Many think we upgraded.  We shall see.

You are entitled to you own opinion, not your own facts.

HS
Dstacify's picture

According to Carman himself, Dabo's exact words to him in the recruiting process were that Urban might quit soon. Not a whole lot of gray area there if that is indeed what he said word for word.

I have more questions than answers about our coaching staff upgrades and contracts after this presser. Did we work to keep Schiano? Did he get a contract extension as well? Grinch? I have no idea why we hired him other than he wanted to come here. I guess that's OK. You get the right people on the bus then figure out the seats they sit in. LJSR may be the only thing that makes sense. He is not taking jobs so he can finish in the next 4-5 years here likely. I like that!

HS
Whiskaz's picture

You have no idea why we hired Grinch? Continuity.  Schiano isn't here for long and we were lucky to keep him now - especially with Coombs' unexpected departure.  Hiring Grinch now means we won't be scrambling to find Schiano's replacement when he inevitably leaves.  The bonus is that Grinch now gets at least a year to get acclimated to the program.  IMHO, having the ability to get a DC in waiting this offseason was a luxury and boost to the program.

HS
jpfbucks01's picture

At the time of his hire we had 1 open spot due to the new 10th coach rule, we already had 5 offensive assts and Urban is more geared to Offense as well so effectively 6.

On defense we had only 4 and Schiano had already gone thru the Tenn debacle but his name was still being mentioned.

So a chance to hire a young up and coming DC with Safety experience when your current DC/safety coach may be leaving as well as the 10th assistant rule and he is a no brainer.

HS
bakerjon's picture

Of course, that's why we hired him, I'm not really that stupid. But what's he going to do this year, now that Schiano is staying?

Schiano isn't going to be here forever-maybe only one more year. Urbs went out and got the hottest DC on the market who happens to be a Columbus native-what's not to understand. Going from Wazzu to tOSU is like going from AAA to the majors-but as a free agent........

HS

2 years seems like a pretty short extension, no?

HS
Sanantonefan's picture

My understanding is he has 3 years (?) left on his deal--that takes him out 5 years.

You Got Barbecue Back There!?!?!?!

HS

Yes I know.  But the whole point was that they didn't like him being under 4.  So this would seem to leave them in same position again very soon.

I still think he expects to retire soon, so 5 years is a home run in my book.

HS
Dstacify's picture

I'm under the firm belief he wants to win at least 1 more NC at OSU before he calls it quits. Hell, I wouldn't be shocked if he's loading up as much as he can so he can catch up to Saban. I do think OSU will be the program he ends his career at though. I don't think it's all that likely he spurns us for, say, Notre Dame at this point in his career.

11 Strong.

HS
armynurseboy's picture

Urban has said in previous interviews that he doesn't intend to coach into old age like some of his mentors (Lou Holtz, Earl Bruce, etc) have.  He may be getting ready to call it quits after the next 5.

HS
Trapper99's picture

Had 3 years left on his current deal so this brings him to 5 year under contract. That puts him right around 60 and 11? years coached here. My guess says this is his last extension.

Edit: Beat like a rented mule

HS
Schizo's picture

5 years gets him close to age 60. I'll be extremely surprised if he decides to coach past 60.

HS
Dstacify's picture

Saban is in his mid-60's and not retiring anytime soon. If he can do it why not Urban. My guess is Urban's time at OSU will come to an end when his family pressures him to call it quits for the sake of his health (that was the underlying factor surrounding his departure from UF to begin with, he wasn't taking care of himself and his family picked up on it and pressured him to step away as a result).

11 Strong.

HS
Sanantonefan's picture

I'm sure he can coach as long as Saban. I'm just not sure he wants to. Heck, he might sign another extension in two years. We'll just have to enjoy the time we have and cross that bridge when we come to it.

You Got Barbecue Back There!?!?!?!

HS
linepilot15's picture

Imagine what it was like when Woody used to renew his contract every year.

linepilot

HS
EZE4TD's picture

It's common for coaches to have a 5-year contract, then after the season sign a 1-year extension, so it's always 5 years, but keeps the options open for both sides. Urbz doesn't want to get locked in for 10 years, not because he won't be here, but because he can make it rain money with an extension after he wins another NC.

HS
stxbuck's picture

Smith-and Urban-want to be able to say to recruits w/ a straight face "My contract is guaranteed for as long you will be in Columbus". That's why Smith said "It's south of 4 years, we need to get it done". I'm sure Urbs pretty much has a rolling contract w/ tOSU-in theory if not practice.

HS
Canukbuck's picture

Okay, this could get confusing going forward - during a practice, we could have Nick Bosa (Joey's little brother) going up against Nicholas Petit-Frere (which translates to Nick Little Brother), so we'd have Nick (the) Little Brother pass rushing Nick Little Brother ..... man, I better buy a program ......

HS

Smith said he does not believe in 10-year contracts.

Didn't we get Holtmann for 8 years? Really splitting hairs there, Gene.

HS
jpfbucks01's picture

25% longer is not splitting hairs in my book

HS
NavyBuckeye91's picture

Exactly. Besides in coaching years, two years is actually like 14.

"You beat cancer by how you live, why you live, & in the manner in which you live.
So, live. Live. Fight like hell. And when you get too tired to fight then lay down and rest and let somebody else fight for you. "
- Stuart Scott

HS
kjonesATX's picture

The two years at the *end* of the contract have very little distinction. If a coach is going to last to the end of an 8 year contract, he will be extended. So I don't very much difference.

The difference between a 4-year deal and a 5-year deal is bigger, IMO. Also 25% longer.

HS
Dstacify's picture

8 years is a long time but it's still not a 10-year contract. So we can't really say Gene was lying about that by using Holtmann as an example. Plus, is anyone really complaining about Holtmann being under contract for 8 years right now? Look at how much he's turned around OSU basketball already in just 1 season?

11 Strong.

HS
Desymond's picture

I think I remember that Gene really only wanted to give Holtmann 6 or 7 years, but Mrs. Holtmann wanted a contract that would cover until their kids graduated high school. That seems like a fair compromise from Gene considering how the search was going at the time (or at least how we thought it was going).

HS
kjonesATX's picture

I don't think the point was to validate or discredit Holtmann's contract in any way. I'm super happy thus far. However, to say we don't believe in 10-year contracts when he just signed our bball coach to an 8-year deal, is a little humorous. The two years at the end aren't very different, IMO. If you aren't successful after about your first 3 years, you're out regardless of an 8 or 10-yr deal. If you are, that 8-yr deal will be extended, probably after about the 5th year.

HS
Dstacify's picture

So, by definition, Hairball's "lifetime contract" up north even though he's accomplished nothing in 3 seasons there. Tbf though their policies are a little different than ours (thank God).

11 Strong.

HS
stxbuck's picture

It's not the length of the contract Smith worries about, it's about how much $$$$$ would be tied up for a 10 year football HC contract at tOSU. If the fencing coach, or Tom Ryan wanted a 10 year deal, Smith would probably listen.

HS
rkylet83's picture

J.K. Dobbins telling Nicholas Petit-Frere about his relationship with Mickey Marotti was a big selling point in Petit-Frere's decision to sign with Ohio State.

Just in case you needed another reason to like Dobbins.

Dstacify's picture

Agreed. Not to mention the more under-appreciated staff guys like Marotti who have strong enough reputations to be a selling point for recruits as talented as NPF. Urban really has done a masterful job of putting this staff together and Schiano electing to stick around is yet another win for OSU football. What a lovely day!!!
