This is close. I think there’s a reason Urban didn’t commit to Haskins this year. Tate runs the spread the way Urban wants, and there seems to be a desire to have a running QB who can shot put over a passing QB who can lunge. I’d put Tate at the top to start the offseason and see where it goes from there.

I like that you're the only one who tried to gauge odds, instead of a probability guess (the OP asked for odds, after all). However, the implied probability of your odds adds up to only about 65 percent, meaning you think there is about a 35 percent chance that some other "dark horse" will win the job.

Well, you probably didn't mean that . . . So, if we adjust your odds proportionally such that the implied probability for all four candidates comes out to about 100 percent we get:

Dwayne: even money
Tate: 2/1
Burrow: 5/1
Baldwin: 65/1

Burrow is not getting his just due here. He's a combination of Martell and Haskins, more 7 than 18, but still a melding of the two. I want to say Haskins/Burrow are 50/50 to start, but that's not giving Tate Martell a chance and I believe he absolutely has a chance. Tough call, but what I HOPE hasn't happened is that Meyer has made up his mind before spring /summer/fall. Let the three of them compete for the job... please.

When I die, sprinkle my ashes over the 70's

HS

It's #7's show now..  with a sprinkle of Tater Tot.  Baldwin red shirts. Urban recruits 2 QBs in 2019.

"Vision without execution is just hallucination."

HS
bakerjon's picture

We already know Weber decided to stay because the coaches told him they will rely less on QB runs next season. I think this tips their hand a bit where they are leaning. I think Burrow gets a shot to change hearts and minds in the Spring. Martell, too.  But let's not kid ourselves, Haskins is the man. UFM has been enamored with him since before he was committed, based mostly on his advanced skill throwing the ball.

Based on the personnel, this offense will change. Ryan Day did not coach running QBs in the NFL. Wilson has featured RBs and less of the QB run in his packages. I expect the extra year with those guys to influence this offense dramatically.

So I give it this for odds

Haskins - 7/1
Burrow - 1/10
Martell - 1/18

All above are percentages. (My phone doesn't have a percentage sign.)

I think OSU's new interest in Tavion Thomas indicates we are looking at the quarterback to be a passer and the running backs to carry the ball. Thomas may be the person to replace JT on 3rd and 4th down short yardage situations. Thomas is a big back who should be able to pick up the tough short yards.

This year is a clean slate..Joe has more real game time experience through his career than Dwayne....only reason he wasn't the guy was a hand injury.....runs the whole package of offense better.....is a hybrid of Dwayne the pro style pocket passer and Tate the mobile gunslinger....Joe has one more year in  the system as well and Urban appreciates ball control and caution on offense as much as anything...Joe is your guy.

Buckeye Jack's picture

Haskins and Burrow are both great QB's. But Haskins likely has it sewed up. Probably 60% to 30%. More because of logistics than talent. Burrow's injury set him back. And Haskins has 3 years left to Borrow's 2. And that Michigan come-from-behind win is impossible for the coaches to ignore. That was the definition of "clutch". Sadly, I think Burrow moves on to a starting role at any of a dozen power-5  programs who will fight to sign him.

Depending on how committed UFM is to the Wilson/Day offense, Tate may have trouble beating out Baldwin for backup.

SO much talent in the QB room.

Dwayne Haskins will undoubtedly be the opening day starter barring any injury. I'm honestly surprised that Joe Burrow decided to stay and by the end of spring practice I'm fairly certain he will be looking to go elsewhere. Urban Meyer has always preached trying to get the best eleven players on the field, which is why I think Tate Martell will get snaps and see his production increase throughout the season. I'd like to see Meyer employ a Chris Leak/Tim Tebow style of play to get the best out of both guys. We shall see. Go Bucks!!!
