Growing up, my mom was teaching me piano.  She taught me to play Prelude in E Minor.  If any of you know this composition, the notes themselves are not difficult. My mom would get so frustrated with me.  "Don't just play it, feel the emotion... FEEL THE EMOTION... play with conviction... ".  To this day, I can play Prelude, still can't feel it like mom wishes I could.

Hip-hop. Easily. They have to be real Lyricists though. I can't stand new rap. Look up No Words by Hopsin. It's mocking new rap, but it's basically what most new hip-hop songs are. Auto tuned, unimaginative, garbage.

I'm going to go with Classic Rock.  Like many of you, I listen a plethora of bands/styles.  I think that more than anything, I prefer musicians and tend to follow whatever band they are in.  Bill Sheehan is a prime example, he's been with DLR, Mr Big, Winery Dogs and now Sons of Apollo.  I love everything he does.

Some bands that I listen to regularly:

Joe Walsh "I Told You So" is a great song

Corrosion of Conformity, the new album is insane and probably my favorite metal band

Early Megadeth and Metallica

Iron Butterfly... Ball, Heavy, Inna-dodda-da-diva, Metamorphosis... Doug Ingle brilliant song writer and vocalist

Van Halen... ALL ERAS, get over it

Cinderella... Night Songs baby

Frank SInatra/Dean Martin

The Sword... ZZ Top meets Corrosion Of Conformity

King's X... greatest rock/metal band that never made the big time

Mr. Big.... musicianship musicianship musicianship

Free...'nough said

Mississippi Bones...never listened to them?  Don't wait, YOUTUBE

Whitesnake.. David Coverdale's voice is epic

Anthrax... just when you thought they couldn't turn back the clock, they write In The End.

Then there's always, Beatles, LZ, Sabbath, Bonamassa, BLS, The Who, Frampton, Living Colour, Sammy Hagar, Clapton, Clutch, Primus, Testament....

Boz Scaggs... Lowdown baby!

Robin Trower.. most know Bridge of Sighs, but I implore you to listen to Shame the Devil

Thanks for listening...

Favorite "genre" is irrelevant to me. I like quality music regardless of genre, and just b/c a band is "metal", "classic', "rap" or whatever, doesn't mean I will like them or gravitate towards their genre. For instance, here are a few of my (many, many)favorite songs-they don't really correlate to genre.......

Genre specificity is a crutch for the incurious and boring!

My personal favorite genre at the moment is lowercase: Lowercase refers to extreme ambient minimalist music. Lowercase recordings feature very quiet sounds, such as ruffling of papers, and amplifies them to an extreme volume.

Also, getting more into bubble trance: Bubble trance is bright, upbeat trance music.

OK - I  totally copied those from a genre glossary on Spotify.

I guess I am good ole rawk music in general with some  old R&B , GorillaZ, Wu Tang Clan and similar artists .mixed in.

If I had to pick only one artist's collection to take on an exile island, it might be a hard choice between Pink Floyd, Alice in Chains and Metallica.

HS
Guts's picture

lowercase sounds super interesting. Mostly because I do video editing as a hobby, and the thought of editing to just sounds of like everyday noises that no one really pays attention to seems like it would be super fun.

Classic rock/metal - The Who, Sabbath, Zeppelin, Floyd are the ones who've logged the most minutes in my catalog.

Did also apprentice under the big musical movements as well - punk (Generation X, Black Flag, Social Distortion), rap/hip-hop (Run-DMC, Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, Eric B and Rakim), and grunge (the Seattle bands).

Can listen to anything but country.

I'm not around that much, running exhausted and lost...

HS

Blues/Blues-based classic rock (Zep was my go to band when young). If my Sirius isn't on Bluesville, it's on classic vinyl or classic rewind, but I like most genres .

Like straight up rock--love Foo Fighters, Collective soul, etc.

Played in the orchestra throughout high school, so I enjoy classical. Sometimes when I'm driving, I MUST listen to classical to chill because of all the idiots driving in San Antonio.

My dad was into Glen Miller in a big way, so I learned to enjoy big bands.

Like grunge bands such as STP, Pearl Jam, Bush, etc.

Enjoy jazz.

Don't prefer country but my son. DIL and grandkids love it, so I often get to listen to it. No problem.

Don't like hip-hop--I will listen to just about anything, but would rather silence than hip-hop.

Alt rock/pop'ish I guess.... but have never really bought into genre. I tend to just like good songs no matter the artist/genre.

Do miss the days when bands actually put albums out at a consistent pace. For decades there if you didn't get a new album out every year or in a lot of cases in under a year people wondered if you still had "it". These days we're lucky if a band puts out 3-4 albums a decade. Always kills me when you see a band these days working and working and working and then you look at someone like The Doors who did 6 albums in just over 4 years..

Grew up on classic rock and metal so the genre that I've been hammering on the last year or so is Jazz.  Acid Jazz, Bop and hard bop, Cool jazz, Free funk, fusion, hard funk, Modern Jazz,  Post bop, and smooth to name a few genres of jazz that I'm digging. .  I still listen to classic from time to time but with the resolution of my system, Jazz is the ticket.
