You young bucks don't know nothin about Sam Barry. Regal his teams were. Played in sweaters. Didn't give up a three all season. Built the railroads. Overcame a small pox outbreak. When the Fighting Horseless Buggies put on their codpieces and sang their terrifying war cry, "Don we know our game apparel!" there wasnt an unsoiled pair of long johns on the opposing sidelines. They would crush this Buckeyes team 7 to 2.

I am going to say that all day long, out loud at work. Over and over again.  They all think I'm crazy anyway.

I know the B1G is down, but they’ve already exceeded my expectations for wins for the season. Really impressed, and hope they can keep the trajectory of the programs headed this direction.

Maybe they're down because we keep beating them !?!?!?!

Yeah, I'm willing to wager that comparing a strong start in 2018 is very different to a strong start in 1859. Let's go ahead and give Holtmann the crown for new coaches in the BIG.

What I like about coach is that he could care less about his record and just wants to get back in the film room to get the team to play better the next game on Sat.  Go Bucks

What do you think the big difference between this year and the previous years have been? I know free throw shooting looks to be much improved. A healthy KDB also helps. There also seems to be some more passion this year. Is it because Marc Loving is gone now?

Basically, what is Holtmann doing different than what Thad did the previous three years?

Yayyyyyy Buckeyes!!!!!

This is the first year I have watched OSU's basketball since Russell's freshman year.  The past few years it looked like the players didn't care and had zero intensity.  I believe the talent was there but Matta with all his health problems couldn't bring the intensity needed.  I am liking what I see out of Holtmann so far.

A healthy KBD is far and and away the biggest difference.  As far as the differences between Holtmann and Matta, primarily we have a healthy coach again.  It was evident just looking at Matta that he wasn't anywhere near 100%, and I hope his time away from the stress of CBB has helped his overall health situation. But on the court I think it's probably a combination of 2 things - #1 Holtmann knew he needed to get buy in from the upperclassmen and from everything I heard it sounds like they love playing for him which is huge.  That also means they are going to do their best to win playing time.  Guys like Tate and Kam Williams and KBD obviously were going to get time, but Holtmann didn't really know them like Thad did, so it seems to me like they all viewed this new start as a "I need to prove myself" kind of situation which has really benefitted the team.  Sometimes you get in a routine, not always bad, not always good.  When something significant shakes that up sometimes the cream rises, other times it becomes jumbled.  Holtmann did a tremendous job of weeding out the problems and getting the cream of the crop to play to their abilities.

MIght we actually have a chance of a coach being named B1G COY??

It's not that rare for an OSU coach to win it.  Welcome (back?) to the basketball bandwagon!

Thad won three 06,07, and 10. Other than that nothing.  Not sure about O'Brien or Ayers if they won.

I've been here. Heck I went to the Texas Southern game they almost blew before KBD woke up in November

I think you will win COY. Only way not is to poop the bed . . . lose to Purdue and UM, also Indiana and one other. I don't think that's going to happen. Thus, COY.

Holtmann deserves much credit. He has energized and instilled purpose and confidence in this team. They are fun to watch and are definitely enjoying themselves. I'm looking forward to seeing Holtmann's continued leadership through the ebbs and flows.

Wow...definitely did not know.

My lack of knowledge didn't diminish the appreciation for the great start...keep going, Buckeyes.

Watching this team is so much more fun than the last few years. Good D, move the ball, everyone engaged, better shots, better shooting, passion, gritty. They want to win as a team. Thad was a great coach and we all appreciate what he did for OSU - but after watching the last several games - wow. I forgot what OSU basketball looks like.

I know this 95 years thing sounds fantastic and it is, but it as also the first time OSU has opened the B1G 6-0 sonce the 2010-11 season when they started 11-0

And that team had many close calls like last night for a loss.

1/4 at Iowa won by 5

1/9 home vs Minn won by 3

1/12 at UM won by 4

1/15 home vs PSU won by 3

1/22 at Illi won by 5

1/29 at NW won by 1

that team would win the regular season and B1G tourney titles be a #1 seed and make it to the sweet 16

Gene may have been late to the game in making a change but he made the right choice. So many were talking Archie but in all honesty, and no disrespect for Archie, I prefer and am delighted that we got and have Holtmann.

HS
bucksfan92's picture

I was totally perplexed by all the Archie fawning that went on here. He is too much of an unproven coach for me. I admit I also wasn’t thrilled with the announcement of Holtmann, but he clearly had a stronger resume than Archie. And so far it’s worked out. I also think Holtmann took over a much better situation than Archie.

HS

I was not thrilled with all the Archie talk, I felt that was not a good choice, so I am very very thankful that Holtmann is our guy.  I think he is the right guy for TOSU!

After being almost unwatchable the past season or so, this new coaching staff and start to the season has been a breath of fresh air.  I was hoping this team would be watchable/competitive and have a chance at making the big dance.  At this point, it would take a collapse to not make it.  Been very enjoyable to watch!  GO BUCKS

HS
ScarletGray43157's picture

It's unlikely, however, that Holtmann will top Meanwell's start. The former Wisconsin coach won his first 12 Big Ten games his first year before rattling off 11 more the next season for a near untouchable 23-0 start in conference play.

"Unlikely" but not "Impossible".

So you're saying there's a chance? (need help with that gif, anyone?)

the task at hand is to beat our next opponent, not to count back 95 years and pat ourselves on the butt.

after NW's lesson, we have a lot of work to do....

Sometimes we need reminding...of that which we already know.

Keep 'em focused and challenged, Coach.

Fortunately, Coach Holtmann seems to agree with your line of thinking. He often says they can be happy with the win, but must continually improve because they haven't really done anything yet.

IMO our common challenge in this Age of Diversity, this WOW [World of Whatever], is to remind ourselves daily of the program standards UFM has set, BEFORE we do what comes naturally... for surely we are 'beasts', and get so excited when we recruit the same.

this has a fundamental relationship to tactics in football:  we initiate; if they react, they will make themselves 'second'.

There is much the players/coaches do daily; but, those are not things to rest on, but springboards to 'next'.  The term i've heard to express this appreciation but forward thinking is "lay what you have done aside, and press onward in the upward call..."

MaArthur put it "a leader looks backward, but only thinks forward".

One game at a time to be sure and there are some quality opponents ahead but the real barometer of how good this team is will come @ Purdue on 2/7. If we can upset them or at least make it a close game, that will be a great metric of where we're at.

Purdue is for real.....

Believe in each other. This seems to be the feeling amongst the program right now, for the last few years (including with Russell) it has been believe in myself. This difference has appeared to have a profound impact upon the team, my hope is it survives the inevitable losses and leads to many more victories!

I would rather be on hand with 10 men then elsewhere with 10,000 - Timur Lenk

Really surprised at how the team is playing this year. They actually seem to give a shit out there. Now, I'm not saying tOSU is elite or anything, the BIG is rather weak this year. But I think they could probably make a S16 run if they play like they have been. Guard play is the biggest weakness on the team, which is probably the most important position in the tourny. I'm actually excited to watch them vs Purdue, haven't been excited for Basketball in a while.
