Assuming Friday commits as expected to join Tyreke Smith in this class, DE has gone from a weakness to a strength, and potentially to a home run if Jean-Baptiste joins up as well.
Now we just need to get our other worrisome position group in this class, OT, sorted out; if we do, this class will be a huge success, regardless of a hiccup or two back in December!
"Any time you give a man something he doesn't earn, you cheapen him. Our kids earn what they get, and that includes respect." -- Woody Hayes
Why is OT recruitment worrisome?
Numbers, purely and simply. I really like Wray, but he's the only OT we have on board this cycle. That's worrisome because, to a large extent, OL recruiting is primarily a numbers game-- a lot of highly-touted HS OLs fail to thrive when they reach the college level. Having a high number of quality big-boys coming through the program every year gives us a better chance of finding ten quality starters and backups each season.
I will be happy if we sign either one of Petit-Frere or Walker, and ecstatic if we could somehow land both.
I'm looking forward to OSU adding Tyler Friday to Larry Johnson's DL group. His size, strength, intelligence, and work ethic will only make this group of young men better. Go Bucks!
Next few weeks are going to be interesting for sure.
Still worried about the O-Line haul. Really need to land Petit-Frere or Walker. Anxiously awaiting the next Hurry Up update on this position.
Trust me! I'm an Engineer.
Me too. Every class needs to have 3-4 OL recruits in it, and we're sitting at just 2 this year, after getting 3 last year. It won't hurt us next year, but eventually it'll come back to bite you. However good we may feel about the guys we DID land, it's inevitable that sooner or later someone transfers, someone has a medical issue, someone leaves early for the NFL, someone gets dismissed from the team, and/or someone just doesn't develop as expected, and suddenly you're short on bodies and trying to fill the holes with first or second year players who just aren't ready. Would love another OT.
Exactly why we needed Carman regardless of the “baggage”
I believe that if we sign either one of Petit-Frere or Walker, we'll be ahead of where we'd have been with Carmen, since it's looking more and more like Jackson is going to end up as an OG, where the Buckeyes already have some quality depth, instead of at OT, where the team is definitely a bit thinner.
Both P-F and Walker seem much more likely to stay at OT.
Carman was not a need and never will be considered a need for Ohio State. He's getting moved inside, has an attitude, plays with his hair too much, and doesn't like pressure. Walker and/or PF would be much better for us!
Carman didn't want the "pressure" of being a Buckeye. That story is over ...turn the page.
"I don't wanna coach average! To hell with that!" -UFM
"But the late offer to Brown may indicate a current Buckeye intends to transfer in the coming weeks or months — though I won't even begin to speculate who that could potentially be."
The saga continues.
This too shall pass.
Luckily, we'll handle the speculation
A man got to have a code...
Who you thinking?
Why not just tweet all the current DB's and ask them? Geez, do I have to think of everything? /s
If you would, you’d relieve my wife of a tremendous burden. I haven’t made a conscious decision or had an original thought in years.
"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." - Edmund Burke
Oh it's all good.
I think the second part of the paragraph was the more likely. Arnette and Sheffield both go to the NFL after this year.
Friday and JJB solidify the def end spot. Sounds like they have two more spots after those two. One goes to Walker or another o lineman. The other goes to a skilled guy like Washington or maybe a DB
Stay golden, Ponyboy.

KBonay if only it was.
I don’t even get weekends off and I logged in to upvote both of your comments. It’s going to be a long week.
Do I have to put something down here?
Back at ya.
Can we stop referring to Alex Williams as a project? That's just disrespectful to the kid.
I get what you're saying, but it is what it is. Guys like Chase Young, Smith (hopefully), and Friday (if he signs) are ready to play from day one. It's gonna take a little bit with Williams to a) get his body more ready and b) refine his skills.
"We gotta go win this next game and make the State of Ohio proud!"-UFM
Just because he's not ready to play day 1, doesn't mean we have to call him a "project". There are several kids every year that aren't ready to play day 1, we don't every one of them a project. It's like people need to somehow justify to themselves him only being a 3 star. Smdh
He's a project. It's not just because he won't be ready day 1.. He most likely won't be ready to play untill his 3rd year in the program.
IMO, he RSs and gets a look at OT.
It may appear that way on the surface but I think most/all 3* recruits are seen as "projects" whereas 4* & 5* recruits are looked at as more complete/developed players.
"The Edge is where average stops and elite begins"
Do we call all 3 stars a project?
Alex Williams might as well go eat worms...Boo hoo. Dude has a scholarship to play football at The Ohio State University. I think he'll be fine.
That's the point. Probably not really a project
Dang, dude, the claws were definitely out for you tonight.
RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE!!
At this point, they don’t know whether he’s going to play offensive line, defensive end or tight end. And I don’t feel it’s a slight or inaccurate to call someone who would take time to develop at each position a project.
I just think it's weak af to keep calling this kid a project. He deserves better than that
Are you Alex Williams?
He might be.......He is kinda new!
I used to play sports, then I realized you can buy trophies.
How about we refer to him as our 2018 "TPO" (Top Project Officer?)
Will that work for you Brutus865???
Does that make you the TTGO...the Top Title Giver Outer?
If it helps, I honestly think the same thing. If I saw someone in a wheelchair I wouldn’t call them a cripple just out of respect. To me it’s just easier to say I really hope he is good enough to start because that would encourage him as well as it would make the Buckeyes stronger.
If i'm a 3 star and recruited by LJ........I would not care what he called me! I would know that i have been looked over by many services and like schools, and THE best line coach in America wants me.........
Hardly an insult!!!!!
I wouldn’t want him to call me collect!
This. It is some respect for the player-which I think the starhanderouters sometimes lack in their whole "on to the next big thing next year mentality".
Tone is off but the point isn’t.
Andrew. If you called your wife a "project", how do you think she'd take it? Would that be a slight?
She’s not, though. I was the project...
But that said, I’m curious why this rubs you the wrong way? It’s a common term in sports, and coaches and talent scouts all agree with that assessment.
We knew he was raw when he committed. Reiterating that he's a project several times over just becomes disrespectful. It's a label, there aren't many labels that are nice.
...but I labeled Smith and Friday, too, and there was no objection to that? It’s not meant to be disrespect, but a simple evaluation. You’re choosing to look at it a different way, and we’re going to just have to agree to disagree.
You labeled Friday and Smith as elite pass rushers, not a project. I just think that if that were my kid, I'm not really liking him being called a project. Is he raw? Maybe. I don't think any Buckeye commit deserves that label. So yes, agree to disagree
Lol who cares? Sometimes it's good to take just take a deep breath, and ask yourself why you're complaining about what you're complaining about. This is so meaningless, man.
Dude you are fight a losing battle. A project doesn’t mean you’re bad or not going to be good. If Andrew was saying that I’d agree with you. Andrews just saying he’s a project though! If anything, it should be a compliment to him. It means they see something in him down the line that they can coach and perhaps become a stud. I mean Hes one of a very few three stars in this class full of four and five stars. It shows that Andrews not the only one who thinks he’s raw and not quite ready. Recruiting experts think so too. I mean he even said that he doesn’t know what position he’s coming into play!!! That’s the definition of a project. Not knowing what’s going to happen but building something so that a couple of years down the line it pays off. You think darron lee was hurt by being called a project, as I bet he was coming in? No, he was grateful to get his offer and worked his butt off to reach that potential Fickell saw in him and prove those people he had the talent to do it. He showed that he had the potential to be something great like you do when you start from scratch building a project. It makes no sense why you are so annoyed by this. Andrew doesn’t mean he’s not going to be good. Just means that it’s going to take longer than some of the other recruits. That’s why they are the five stars and he is the three star.
Good point. If I recall right Lee was a project because he was under sized but had great potential at different positions. Turned out he left early for the NFL. With this class being #2 in the country with numbers tight, it's quite the compliment of his potential (thinking he's really special) that they are willing to do it. Glass half empty thinking if it's disrespect.
Alex “The Project” Williams.
This is your fault.
Here's hoping that nickname finds its way into Gus Johnson's notebook.
I survived Cooper, and I hate Tai Streets.
There are “projects” in every class and some of the best players come in that way. Especially guys that they don’t have a clear position from the jump. Guys like Sam Hubbard, Darron Lee, Jamal Berry, shoot even Jayson Oweh are all guys that come to mind in the past couple of years or so that have been talked about as a “project.” It’s not a derogatory term it’s just for whatever reason they’re not polished players but have potential. The ceiling is the same or higher it’s just they’re not at the same level as others on Day 1.
He is dude!
He was a pretty impressive player for Pick North. Anyone who saw him play would say that he was very effective. I predict he will hold his own.
In old Ohio there's a team that's known throughout the land...
The Brown offer is certainly an interesting one. I'm hoping it doesn't mean we aren't getting someone else we want/need. Just seems weird to offer a corner this late in the game. I'm hoping Andrew is right about Friday, and still hoping for one of the OTs.
The staff has an extra scholly and has covered it's bases-why not add another talented DB-that's one position where you can never be too deep.
The staff has free time and wants another "project" to work on, obviously. /s
Yea these late skill position offers mean there are probably transfers on the horizon. I looked over the roster and didn’t see any that I would want to see leaving. Could be a OL or DT that have been passed by as well. maybe the staff thinks these guys are the best available? A lot of talent on the roster, most I’ve seen here @ TOSU. Just wish some of these underrated guys were from Ohio.
MICHIGAN STILL SUCKS
What a time to be a DL commit at Ohio State. You get to learn from Larry Johnson and now is a time when you’ll most likely be able to garner early playing time
Urban Meyer is my head coach for the Ohio State Buckeyes. I stand by him 100% #standwithUrban #AlwaysaBuckeye
Friday = Michael Bennett
Man we sure are gonna need some WR's in next years class. Most will have the opportunity to play early as well seeing depth might be a concern after this year. I see why their still going after Olave.
Agree. Its possible we lose the starting 6 next year. Could lose 5 if 6 if just 1 of the 2 true jrs leave early.
This is where losing grimes really hurts
Great to hear all the positive remarks. Let’s not pull the trigger too soon, as recruits always use this platform to pull a “surprise “. So whatever happens we are still ok. Just saying...
this 2-tier NCAA signing makes for some yo-yo-ing on the part of recruits and coaches... and over a 'quiet period' as well. This does not bode well for the people and the sport as a whole.
The next thing we know URB will announce that he has secured the OL front four of guys from Yugoslavia or something and they are all 6-10, 350 and can move like LJ did in the Togai video.
That probably won’t happen because, well, Yugoslavia no longer exists...but Harbaugh signed a defensive end from Germany so who knows, maybe Urban can cash in on a Czech or two. A spring game trip to Prague could be in the Buckeyes’ future!
Hey....i’m 3 years old! Gimme time to learn history !!
can cash in on a Czech
Well, Jim O'Brien tried it with the b-ball team, so there's a precedent at OSU.
Another reason to love Friday!
