I can't speak for EW posters in particular (I am working FWIW), but the statistics I've seen nationally on federal holidays basically break down into two groups.

One group of holidays - New Year's Day, Labor Day, Christmas, Thanksgiving, Memorial Day, and Fourth of July - are paid days off for the vast majority of the country, like eighty percent or more of businesses are closed.

The remaining 'holidays' - MLK Day, President's Day, Columbus Day, and Veteran's Day - are basically ignored by most of the country, with only a third or less of workers having them off.

I have never much liked John Cooper as a coach, but he seems like a really good guy. I met him in New Orleans in before the Sugar Bowl against Arkansas. He was all decked out in Buckeye gear and walking up and down Bourbon Street with his wife holding hands. They were just a regular old couple being regular fans. I said hi to him and he shook my hand and that was pretty much it. But he came across as a very friendly, down to earth, regular guy. Its hard to hold a grudge against someone like that.

HS
pompano buckeye's picture

Having been a Buckeye fan since Woody was the coach, I am happy, at some level, that I survived the Cooper years because it helps me to revel in the total angst that the UM fans feel with Hairball!  He still has to lose many more to us before I feel vindicated.  I hate to hear people say that a better Wolverine team is good for the rivalry.  I want them to lose every time! Just sayin'.

HS

Night games were the bomb ten yrs ago. There were only a few so it meant you had the best play by play, best teams, best audience share.

Now there are as many games competing at nine pm for eyes as at noon. Maybe more. So it needs to be a good game to warrant playing at night. No Rutgers. No northwesterns.

But if it’s a good game, night time is the right time. Midnight is just an hour on the clock. Sleep in

For someone who became a BUCKEYES FAN in /, the mere mention of the Cooper years immediately brings back a tsunami of hurt, anger, frustration, humiliation, and armageddon....But he did lay the foundation for the Buckeyes to be national from a recruiting standpoint, ultimately playing a big part in taking the Buckeyes to where we are today.

"People will lose their minds, and then everything will be normal in two years. Just how the world goes."  When people "lose their minds,", it's everyone's responsibility to call them out on it and remind them to "calm the fck down".  Taking a laissez-faire approach to fake moral outrage breeds extremism and stupidity, which is as pleasant as testicular cancer.  A grown adult should speak and act in a REASONABLE manner at all times.  That shouldn't be too controversial or asking too much.

I agonized over the Cooper years too.  But just remember as you slander him, speaking only at OSU, Urban Meyer only has one more NC than Cooper did....the same for Jim Tressel.  And the last time I checked, at this salary, that is the standard.....the only one.

HS
blueblazer22's picture

This is true, but Urban has only been at the helm for seasons. Cooper had a dozen or so, and the Vest was more than a decade as well. So there is still time, but I get your point. I have long thought that Cooper does not get as much credit as he should, but that record vs ttun just kills it

I don't think this deserves its own thread, so I'll post it here. Since one of the topics in the skully today was a TTUN man (Ted Kaczynsky) I think its kind of on topic. But I was having a conversation with a TTUN fan this weekend who made the argument that Khaki Jesus is a better coach than Urban Meyer. I actually had a difficult time coming up with a response because I thought this was settled, and there was no further need for debate, thus leaving me totally unprepared to respond to a statement so stupid. According to this guy, going to three NFC title games is better than winning three national titles. Of course this guy also gave Harbaugh credit for winning at San Diego State (a school he never coached) and claimed that Harbaugh won two of those NFC championship games (he won one). Typically I wouldn't even bother giving this conversation a second though because this kind of thing isn't out of the norm for the delusional honks. But this came from a guy who I have always thought was smarter than this. Granted there was a lot of alcohol involved and I'm guessing thats the reason this guys true thoughts finally came out.

HS
BrutusB's picture

We have fans who do mental gymnastics to proclaim that Meyer is better than Saban. Fandom is a hell of a drug.

HS
MichiBuck12's picture

In no way is Urban better than Saban at this point, but at least Urban has won head to head a couple times. It would still take some mental gymnastics to get to that conclusion, but its a little closer. Concluding that a coach is better than another with zero head to head wins in three tries, zero national titles against three, and zero conference titles (FBS only) against six requires mental gymnastics with a degree of difficulty that would get you an olympic medal.

HS
blueblazer22's picture

A line of incredibly ludicrous thinking, but considering how the hopes and dreams of ttun fans have been crushed since the new century began, I guess that delusional works for this guy. JimBaugh has had some success in his career, but none of it at his current stop, and in zero ways is he above Urban, period.

HS
blu.fan's picture

Granted there was a lot of alcohol involved

You answered your own question (as to how to respond to someone who thinks Harbaugh is better than Meyer.) Look, I love Harbaugh, and hope things improve significantly next year and the year after, and that he stays as Michigan's coach for a long time. But someone has to be high as a kite or drunk as a skunk to think he's a better coach than Meyer, based on what he has done thus far.

There is often debate on the GOAT, or even on greatness. I am happy with Harbaugh (though not happy with how things have turned out the last couple years.) I believe he has the potential to be a great coach, but he hasn't proven it yet.

  • Sometimes, it takes a long time to be acknowledged. Michigan fans themselves questioned John Beilein . . . at least in these parts, he is more and more being seen as a great basketball coach.
  • Sometimes, the debate continues:  (who was greater? MJ or LeBron? Woody or Bo?)
  • Sometimes, it seems to be settled, beyond question, at least for the time being:  Brady right now has the title of NFL QB GOAT. (That's one I'd debate, for any anyone who holds that Manning or Montana or someone else is the greatest. There's no question that Brady isn't the fastest, biggest, strongest QB. But he works very hard, and has managed to succeed despite a huge variation in who is around him, receiving, blocking, etc.)

But JH has done nothing thus far to earn the mantle of being a "great coach." How can there be any debate?

Being at OSU during the Cooper tenure, how he never seemed to “click” completely with the culture and that he was from the south, not to mention the failure to win against TTUN, I never would have imagined that he would call C-bus home, and adopt the Buckeyes as his team the way he has.  I guess it’s a testament to a great city and a great program.  Respect him for staying in Central Ohio.  Glad it’s been good to him.

The Unabomber mini series on Discovery is highly recommended. Normally when I watch TV I’m on my laptop at the same time but for that show I had to turn it off to make sure I could follow the story. It was the case that led to forensic linguistics being accepted in criminology, which came from breaking down Kaczynski’s manifesto into idioms, grammar, punctuation and patterns of speech that by themselves weren’t unique but when pieced together like a puzzle collectively formed a sort of signature.

We make fun of Michigan and Crazy Jimmy for obvious reasons but I can’t imagine there’s another American college that’s turned out more whackos, including (from Wikipedia, which is never wrong):

François “Baby Doc” Duvalier (Public Health, –), Haiti’s  repressive dictator, who was excommunicated from the Catholic Church; estimates of those killed by his regime are as high as ,.

Theodore Kaczynski (PhD ), better known as the Unabomber, one of UM's most promising mathematicians; earned his Ph.D. by solving, in less than a year, a math problem that his advisor had been unable to solve; abandoned his career to engage in a mail bombing campaign.

Jack Kevorkian (MED: MD Pathology ), guilty of second-degree homicide after committing euthanasia by administering a lethal injection to Thomas Youk; spent eight years in prison.

Nathan F. Leopold, Jr., thrill killer of Leopold and Loeb, transferred from Michigan in to the University of Chicago, before murdering fourteen -year-old Robert "Bobby" Franks.

Richard A. Loeb (B.A. ), thrill killer of Leopold and Loeb, youngest graduate in the University of Michigan's history, murdered -year-old Robert "Bobby" Franks.

Herman Webster Mudgett, a.k.a. H.H. Holmes (MED: MD ), th-century serial killer; one of the first documented American serial killers; confessed to murders, of which nine were confirmed; actual body count could be as high as two hundred and fifty; took an unknown number of his victims from the Chicago World's Fair; his story was novelized by Erik Larson in his book The Devil in the White City.

After the snafu in Hawaii, it can only be that the government has seized all numbers in order to protect the integrity of the launch codes. WarGames was not entirely fictional.

EDIT: Damn! Wouldn't let me post a cool WarGames gif!

Does anyone ever proofread? Love this site and the info but this is just bad journalism. Shouldn't you have the fundamentals like grammar, spelling, and missing numbers figured out. It takes away from your product and reading this was basically a waste of time. Hone your craft dude.

Regarding the length of games, the elephant in the room is TV timeouts.  During the Bten championship game there were ten - three minute TV timeouts in the first half.   I can't figure out why any company would ever advertise during a football game with three minute timeouts.  No one watches them.  Most people turn to another channel and watch a series of plays in another game.  If I were an advertiser, I would demand no longer than ninety second TV timeouts.  Long TV timeouts add an extra thirty to forty five minutes to a game.

So if the NCAA changes the transfer rule, does that mean Crazy Jimmy will be flying around the US actively recruiting transfers?

HS
analyticalguy's picture

Probably. And landing transfers who either A) haven't been good enough to get themselves into their first team's starting lineup, or B) became starters but lack the confidence in themselves to make their original team good enough to compete for championships. Then Harbaugh will patch them all together and hope that these spare parts help him to beat the Buckeyes and have post-season success. Good luck with that.

Noooo body hates or hated John Cooper!!!!! Good man. No questions at all.
They / We / I - just hated every single game that wasn't a victory. (Still feel that way today). Made me crazy that it bothered me more than it bothered him. Great man just not a great choice at that time in our history. Much respect though. Buckeye for life.

Though his manifesto is long-winded and overwrought, I did read Ted Kaczynski's Industrial Society and Its Future some three decades ago. Nutty as a fruitcake? Probably. Wacko terrorist? Most definitely. But his Neo-Luddite ravings weren't entirely off-base.

Part Brave New World predictions and the Butlerian Jihad from Dune, Ted was certainly out there where the buses don't run. But the exurbs of the mind are sometimes ahead of conventional pathways of thinking about the human condition.

Tragic and stupid that Ted had to kill and maim people to make his point.

I remember reading some of it and being scared that occasionally I would nod my head and think "huh, that's a good point actually".

When a new item of technology is introduced as an option that an individual can accept or not as he chooses, it does not necessarily REMAIN optional. In many cases the new technology changes society in such a way that people eventually find themselves FORCED to use it.

Basically think of cars or smartphones.  At one point they were a cool new gadget, now they're practically mandatory.

...Not to mention, BB, the fascination today with social media (Twitter, Facebook, et al) and following sports teams (think of fantasy football, recruiting, etc.) that Kaczynski termed "surrogate activities" that he thought were "useless goals."

Guess I'm also guilty of the above as I type here on 11W. ;-)

If I have to watch one more stupid Direct TV ad...

For those of you too young to know the Cooper Years (spoiled Tressel/Meyer fans), ask a Michigan fan these days... Soooo painful!   However, the difference would be Coop had great Buckeye teams who seasons were ruined by Michigan... Outside of 2006, Michigan's teams have been average at best-- so they don't really understand the "devastating" pain Coop's Buckeye fans endured...

I feel like an AA meeting... I suffered through the Cooper era - even worse, I attended EVERY version of The Game under that darkness!  NOTHING will erase the stench I still smell, the bitter taste I still have in my mouth, of sitting in that shithole stadium in AA while the Buckeyes lost.  It sill guts me to think of those great Buckeye teams laying an egg just about every single year.  If you ask ANY fan that was alive during that era, they can say it instantly... 2-10-1.... TWO-TEN-AND 1.... do I get a chip for this?

Weird - I find myself suffering from bouts of CFS.  It usually lasts about a week and it is frustrating as hell!  I'll sit on the couch fighting to stay awake and as soon as I hit the bed, BOOM, wide awake with no ability to sleep.  To keep my marriage intact, I stumble out to the living room, turn on the TV, and zombie watch something.  I may doze off for 1/2 hour but never for any length of time.  I'm sure I've come close to overdosing on sleep meds trying to get a normal night of sleep.  Then, as mysteriously as it appeared in my life, it vanishes... most bizarre thing!
