Skull Session: Ohio State Scholarship Crunch, Beer Sales Boom in Big Moments, and B1G Basketball Wild This Year

I need to calm my nerves with an overpriced beer. I'll be back in 45 minutes.

The sad thing about me laughing as hard as I am is how true this is. I still get hammered in the parking lot so that I don't have to miss so much of the game (except for pee breaks) and I can save a bunch of money.

Not related, but if you’re basically anywhere within 400 miles of Columbus, be careful, the winter storm from hell passed through much of the area the last day or so. Much love to all fellow 11w’s in their travels.

Every year a few kids transfer or leave do to medical or disciplinary issues between now and the beginning of the season.  If we only signed 85 in Feb, we would only have 81 or 82 players by the time the season starts.

So going forward I'm going to call it not-undersigning instead of oversigning.

HS
BuckeyeRealist13's picture

lol whatever you want to call it.

HS

Despite consistently over signing the last couple of years, the staff has been able to give multiple walk-ons scholarships due to attrition. I don’t think the coaches are forcing kids out to make way for walk ons. Shit happens.

HS

I think the difference here is the degree to which it's done. Ohio State's "oversigning" is still signing around 20-25 players a year, which usually ends up having just a couple of players transfer or retire to fit scholarships, some of whom would have left regardless (e.g., the loser of the Haskins/Burrow battle is likely to transfer, but not really because of the scholarship crunch).

When some of the most ridiculous SEC schools were doing it, they were signing 28, 30, or even more players in a year - if you're doing that, you basically *need* to be running off at least half a dozen players a year just based on pure arithmetic.

HS
Citrus's picture

There were kids from ‘bama claiming they were being forced out for medical reasons when healthy. I can only remember one such claim here, and that player was starter quality.

So are we to infer from the beer sales that the closer the game the more the faithful need the overpriced beers? Asking for a friend.

Why has Monday Night Raw become huge? Much of it is character driven to be sure, but without WCW rising up and making the Monday Night Wars between the two a thing, I don't see any way that Raw would have gained the foothold it did. Still impressive to keep it going this long.

The BasketBucks have just as good a chance as anyone this season the way things look. It would be fun to see to make the winter and spring go by much faster. Bucks, Boilers and Spartans could make for a B1G heavy tournament.

I guess I wasn’t paying attention to the RichRod firing story.  Did Arizona not have a conduct clause in his contract?  If they did, why are they stupidly paying the buyout?  Before clicking on the link I actually respected the guy for what he did at Tulane.  I no longer do.

HS
Citrus's picture

Arizona looked into it and it appeared there wasn’t much to the allegations. So little, that they did pay him. I’d give the guy the benefit of the doubt in a situation like that until their is some additional evidence beyond a compliant.

The drive to 85 is on. I had a little laugh After a certain receiver of ours announced his return for his fifth year and the reactive ‘booms’. Where was he going to go? There’s not a huge market for a receiver coming off of three years of injuries and an 18 catch season. I’m thinking he’s trying his best not to be a fifth year senior casualty on our new norm of following SEC behaviors. Love it or hate it roster management in Columbus has changed. I’m thinking oversigning.com is collecting dust.

The pain of discipline or the pain of regret, take your pick

HS
Buckeye Jack's picture

Where was he going to go?

Free agent contract, at worst. Dixon's 23.4 yards per reception ranks 4th in the nation.  And 8 TD's in 18 catches is off the charts! That's 2.66 points for EVERY RECEPTION.

Top 5 WR's -  Yards per reception:

1. Cephus (Rice) 24.88 yds - 5 TD's (25 receptions)

2. Hall (Missou) 24.76 yds - 8 TD's (33 receptions)

3 Pringle (K ST) 24.1 yds - 3 TD's (30 receptions)

4. Dixon (tOSU) 23.4 yds - 8TD's (18 receptions)

5. Ratley (T A&M) 23.1 yds - 2 TD's (30 receptions)

So, yeah, BOOM!!!!!

Zone6, with rotating WR's, will have 1000+ yards at all 3 WR positions this season

HS
Buckeye Jack's picture

That's 2.66 points for EVERY RECEPTION.

More like 3 points. Since PAT's in college football are 97.1% made.

Can not wait to watch Zone6 in '18.

Hope you guys are right and I hope he has a break out Year in 2018. Still no way he would have been chosen in this year’s draft so I kinda think the announcement to return was a foregone conclusion.

The pain of discipline or the pain of regret, take your pick

HS
Buckeye Jack's picture

I'll have to disagree with your opinion on that point, 1020. My opinion is that the NFL scouts have zeroed in on under-used Buckeye WR's. Dixon's stats are thru the roof as to breakaway ability. I think he was a shoe-in for a mid round to late round pick.

But I agree that with a good showing in '18, his draft stock will greatly improve.

Zone6, with rotating WR's, will have 1000+ yards at all 3 WR positions this season

HS
stxbuck's picture

Dixon has a knack for busting crappy coverage when healthy. He hasn't shown exceptional hands, route running, or body control. Would he get drafted in the 6th or 7th round-probably, but not for certain. Another year in Columbus won't hurt his draft stock

HS
Hovenaut's picture

Have to give Dixon my respect. He's had a long, tough road to getting healthy amd finally breaking through in the rotation.

Eager to see him further progress this coming season.

I'm not around that much, running exhausted and lost...

HS
Buckeye Jack's picture

has a knack for busting crappy coverage

Pleeeez - Half of Dixon's receptions AND half of Dixon's TD's were against Penn State, Wisconsin, Oklahoma, And Iowa.

He hasn't shown exceptional hands, route running, or body control.

He hasn't shown them - or you haven't recognized them? Dixon is an elite wide receiver. 24 yards per catch? 8 TD's from 18 grabs? Spectacular. Nothing short of spectacular.

Zone6, with rotating WR's, will have 1000+ yards at all 3 WR positions this season

HS
GoBuckeyes1020's picture

Take it easy buckeye brother, your JT is the root of all buckeye evil is showing. Dixon is a great feel good story of resilience but using the words elite and spectacular are a little much. Hope those words are applicable this time next year but he’s not there yet.

The pain of discipline or the pain of regret, take your pick

HS
Buckeye Jack's picture

the words elite and spectacular are a little much

23 yards per reception is elite by any sane measure. And 8 TD's in 18 catches is beyond elite. In fact, I haven't been able to find any WR from any year who has matched that amazing stat. I doubt that more than 1 or 2 (if any) in the history of college football have done what Dixon has done as to 8 TD's in 18 receptions.

Paging Remy.

Zone6, with rotating WR's, will have 1000+ yards at all 3 WR positions this season

HS
Buckeye Jack's picture

And even more unlikely that anyone matched Dixon's 8 TD's In only 18 catches along with 23.4 or more yards per catch. I'll have to see that stat to believe it.

Zone6, with rotating WR's, will have 1000+ yards at all 3 WR positions this season

HS
GoBuckeyes1020's picture

You bring up a lot of stats in your arguments. Dude, I hope Dixon has a great 2018 and is a first round pick next year too but please back off the elite and spectacular. You mention this:

Pleeeez - Half of Dixon's receptions AND half of Dixon's TD's were against Penn State, Wisconsin, Oklahoma, And Iowa.

He had 1 catch for 12 yards against Oklahoma. That you can include that stat line in your proof should say enough. What you could and should include is in his last 180 snaps this season over the last 5 games he had 1 catch for 9 yards. I know, I know....JT Barrett was his qb and I think I know what you think of him and his stats but 1 catch for 9 yards in 180 snaps in 5 wins to close the season is not elite or spectacular.

Again, I hope he makes some nice coin in 2019 playing football but in 2018 he should be thankful to have a fifth year scholarship.

The pain of discipline or the pain of regret, take your pick

HS
Buckeye Jack's picture

The fact that JT failed to get the ball to Dixon more than once in the last 180 snaps of the season comes as no great surprise. Getting the ball to our playmakers was never JT's strong suit.

23.4 yards per catch while making 8 TD's (from 18 catches) is spectacular - I don't care HOW you slice it. I seriously doubt that it has ever been done before in the entire history of the game.

Zone6, with rotating WR's, will have 1000+ yards at all 3 WR positions this season

HS
GoBuckeyes1020's picture

And there it is finally. JT. The guy who threw every one of those 18 Dixon catches and 8 TDs. Even the one catch Dixon had against Oklahoma.

63 catches made in those last 5 games. 1 out of 63 by Dixon. Again I hope he has a break out 2018 and works his way into the draft. I also hope Haskins, or Burrow, or Martell tear it up this year too. I also hope they break every JT record in the books without taking the mounds of shit buckeye fans threw his way.

The pain of discipline or the pain of regret, take your pick

HS
Buckeye Jack's picture

Prior to those last 5 games was the Iowa game. Dixon scored 2 TD's against Iowa.

So, 1020, your trying to blame Dixon for JT's failure to get him the ball in the last 5 games? C'mon. Dixon had some of the best WR stats in the nation after Iowa. Almost all on yards after catch.

We've been telling you for years that JT is a 2-loss non-Natty QB. Nice solid read/option QB, but all his "records" come from the elite NFL-level teammates all around him. Also, ou seem butthurt because you were wrong about JT being a Natty-level QB. And seem to be trying to make JT look "great" by ripping on the WR room along with dissing a host of other fall guys.

Zone6, with rotating WR's, will have 1000+ yards at all 3 WR positions this season

HS
GoBuckeyes1020's picture

Dude....butthurt? No need to get personal. Other than last month’s colonoscopy it’s been an exit only orafice since birth. JT does have a ‘natti’ by the way. I’ve not laid blame on anyone (you’ve been the only one in this conversation to do that). All I’ve said is that using the words elite and spectacular with Dixon is a little premature at best. You talk yards after catch and mention his great game in a 31 Point loss to Iowa. He had 44 and 22 yard touchdown catches both of which he caught on the run perfectly timed on the goal line with exactly 0 yards after the catch. Love his story after battling injury for two years but AT BEST he was a late round or camp invitee if he left this year. At best. He should be thankful for a fifth year because not all fifth years are granted under Meyer. I hope he tears it up in 2018. Maybe you should aim a little of your angst at the coaching staff who calls the plays and posts the lienup instead of the QB. I know JTs limitations as I’ve  seen the HANDFUL of losses in a four year career. I also saw a guy pick up the pieces in 2014 and lead us to a shot at the title. I also saw the same guy get dicked around all of 2015 while the savior couldn’t get the job done either. The blame rests with the coaching staff not the player. Now I’ve wasted way too much time responding to you and prefer to drink another IPA while watching a little football this evening not bitching about how bad our record setting QB has been the last few years all the while making excuses as to why his records don’t matter.

The pain of discipline or the pain of regret, take your pick

HS
stxbuck's picture

Do you even bother to look at stats before you post? http://www.espn.com/college-football/player/_/id/3121413/johnnie-dixon Check out Dixon's stats against Wisky and Oklahoma........2 catches 21 yards.....0 TDs.......just man up and admit you are talking out your butt.

HS
GoBuckeyes1020's picture

Only the stats that fit his narrative. It's a shame that JT has become such a polarizing figure after such a stellar career. As I said several times, I hope Dixon tears it up in and I hope the next QB does the same.

HS
0H-10's picture

He gets to 85 every year without much complaint coming from the players...even those red or gray shirting or transferring. He seems quite aware of his human resources going into each season. Example: wonder what kind of conversations have been had with Feder or Wohlabaugh leading up to decisions to depart with respect for the time/experience here...the coaches must be keeping it somewhat honest & transparent throughout and even aiding them in making connections going forward.

College football is a meat grinder. The same thing happens to tOSU's roster (minus lots of early NFL declarations) that happens to New Mexico's that happens to Akron's that happens to Eastern Kentucky's-injuries,academics,discipline,tired of playing-you name it.

Just my opinion, Wody would probably prefer you take the money for a statue and pay it forward.  Not sure what, but a scholarship endowment, something with a children’s hospital, quite frankly anything that helps people.  Statue is kind of neat, but at the same time, 50 years from now, most folks will have no personal connection to Woody.

For two months, it looked like Arizona had a coach and quarterback to build upon. Then it turned out its coach was a serial sexual predator.

Please don’t state this as if we know it to be a fact. What we know is that one woman alleges that Rodriguez did some things and that she’s suing him for like $7 million. There have been so many high profile false accusations lately that didn’t involve $7 million so I think we need to slow our roll a bit.

HS

We've debated the definition of oversigning on this site before and the problem is the word means different things to different people. To me, the egregious SEC version included bringing in more kids than typical roster management required, and then dumping the lower starred signees or forcing kids to take a grey shirt , or other underhanded bullshit. That's my definition of oversigning. What Meyer has done since he's been here is anything but that.

If Ohio State shocks the nation and signs 10 more prospects next month, those numbers will work themselves out before September because the coaching staff already crunched the numbers before signing them. Or so we hope.
