Ohio State Men's Basketball Has Made Strides This Season, and Last Night Showed How a Change in Attitude Has Shown Why

Where can I find one of those jerseys? Damn.

HS
BusterTillmanFanClub's picture

Was on here looking for the same thing, please help community.  Called Buckeye Corner and no bueno.  Might have to have my own made from one of those illegal Chinese companies.  Question is do you go Jimmy Jackson, Chris Jent or Jay Burson on the back?

Don't mess with Tress

HS

The answer is always Granville Waiters.

Although it appears he never wore that particular jersey.

Thad is/was a better man than he is/was a bball coach, and as a coach he was pretty darned good! That said, I wonder what Holtmann would have gotten from Buford or Loving? Both had over the top talent, and both under-achieved by miles. never will forget Buford having the highest percentage body fat of anyone at the NBA camp. And Loving, he hustled at least 5% of the time he was on the court. Thad permitted both to under-achieve.

HS

Thad and staff did a great job getting Buford  - as a player and person - from where he was freshman year to where he was when he left.  That was the start of "addition by subtraction bringing out the best in guys. And while it worked with Buford, not so much last year.

Great read...and I don't hate the offseason so much this year.

It's been an absolute pleasure to watch this team the past few weeks...they've grown in such a short time.

Should continue to be a fun next couple months plus, and the best part?

Holtmann is just getting started.

I'm not around that much, running exhausted and lost...

KBD is easily the MVP of this team and his scoring ability gives this team a chance in every game, but Tate is the captain; his relentless hustle gives this team an identity.

HS
southalabamabuckeye's picture

Great read, Johnny.  I didn't get to watch the game because I was coaching a game last night.  The rebound by Tate is everything symbolized everything that Ohio State lacked in recent seasons.  Hustle, heart, and drive to be your best we absent.  Even now as I envision Amir and Loving with their listless attitudes and efforts it angers me.  The Buckeyes are enjoyable to watch and give all plaudits to Holtmann.

HS

What?  You don't think last year's team gave all out effort every time??

(Note: the above is actually a 3 minute gif.  The lack of any movement is not an accident)

I think Gene did us all a favor. He saw where we were heading and wanted Thad to get healthy and the team to get better. Neither was happening to where they needed to be and Gene pulled the trigger.in the long run it was best for both the school and Thad. My hope is Thad gets healthy and returns to what makes him happy. Holtmann is a hell of a coach and i hope he builds a dynasty.

Hey Cancer! This ass kicking is brought to you by the Guernsey county mafia. Give it Hell 84!

HS

Gene deserves a victory lap.  Not only is Holtmann looking like COY, Indiana has spent most of the season barely above .500 with the guy our fans were clamoring for.

HS
Sampson8080's picture

Indy's results have really surprised me. It is still early, but I thought Miller was THE prize of college basket coaching last off-season.

HS
Turban Meyer's picture

I think OSU has more talent top-to-bottom right now than Indiana.  I think Miller is a good coach and will get them going eventually.

HS

The best $10 million Gene ever spent to pay off Matta for the 3 years left on his contract.

I was at the game last night and while all those were great plays, the play that mattered most was about 5-6 minutes into the game.  Maryland opened up a 4 or 5 or pt lead and Holtmann had a odd line-up on the floor. Maryland scored an EASY basket. Holtmann called a quick TO and just tore into the players on the floor starting with Tate. Tate even gave a little back. But from section 228 we could see Holtmann just ripping the team a new one for the evident lack of effort on the defensive end. After the TO KBD, Tate, Dakich (esp Dakich), big Wesson, and Kam just took over.  Slowly at first, but the rout was on after that. It's been a long time since an OSU basketball team responded like that.

HS
Scooter's picture

The defensive intensity really ratcheted it up after that time out.  Totally different team.

I couldn't tell what was going on in the huddle.  I was in the cheap seats, 1 row from the top of the Schott.  And that's a LONG way up!

Scooter

HS
MudBuck's picture

Agreed, they came out a little flat and completely changed after that and it was really built off of an emphasis on defense. It reminds me of the early years under Thad. Defense wins championships and it has a way of giving people energy and rhythm on the offensive end of the floor, especially by creating easy buckets. Really like how this team seems to be playing with a trust and joy in one another.

On the KBD highlight the Buckeyes were thumping a good Maryland team so badly that the announcers had already started filling time.

Life is short.  Filled with stuff.

"It doesn't just make them a dangerous team to play as they enter the heart of Big Ten season, it also makes them enormously entertaining to watch. Ohio State men's basketball is appointment television for the first time in a long time, and for those of us inclined toward laying on the couch and staring into space, we've got an inspiration on the court instead of a partner in crime."

Goddamn that paragraph was beautiful (as was the entire article).  Major props, Johnny.

HS
t-dub's picture

that was the best rebound ever!

I almost skipped the game because I was afraid of a letdown after the Sparty win.  I'm glad that I watched.  My favorite part was the effort, hustle, and TEAM play.  No one else will take the team lightly.

Player development stands out most every time I've watched the Buckeyes this year. Holtmann for President./s

HS

My favorite part was Dakich actually shooting the ball like he meant it. I've been clamoring for that all season.

Full confession, I got to point last year that had been brewing for two seasons before, where I just gave up on Buckeye basketball and the Matta era.  My dad is a season ticket holder and I wouldn’t/won’t go with him when I’m in town.  They were just unwatchable. It carried over to this year, and the MSU game was the first game I watched.  Man was I pleasantly surprised, and I even followed it up with tuning in last night. They were genuinely a joy to watch and I’m happy to be on the bandwagon now

Thanks for the article. Great read and reminder of the non physical side of sports. This team has turned it around very quickly and much of that is due to the new team attitude. Playing with heart, determination, unselfish attitude, and hustle show that the intangibles are extremely important. Love the "give a damn" phrase. Covers most of it.

HS
Icouldnotgofor3's picture

The biggest improvement I see is the movement of the ball around the horn and the assists to basket ratio. Their ball movement has improved tremendously and is quite crisp. The way it should be...

In sports as in life, you cannot minimize the importance of attitude to one’s success or lack there of.

A wise man told me many moons ago; “ in the greatest country on earth, you can be anything you want, and whatever that is strive to be the best; if you are the garbage man, be the best damm garbage man that there is”. BTW, that wise man played for Woody. Go Bucks!

HS

"...KBD, his progression into an absolute machine on offense is part of the whole thing."

Many here have stated the *team attitude* improvement, it was definitely Holtmann's time out fire under their butt rant that sparked the run.

Thanks for the excellent write up Johnny, looking forward to more.

HS

Watch the replay of Tate flying in for the rebound, but check out Kam this time. Kinda the opposite...

HS
GoNutz27's picture

Kam's responsibility on that play is to get back on defense to help prevent a run out if the defense gets the rebound, so not going to fault him for not crashing the boards on that play.  I think his overall defensive effort has improved this year, as well.

HS
rosycheeks's picture

Maybe. I see it a bit differently. When the shot went up, Tate was back toward mid-court. In my mind, he's the one who would have had that responsibility. Kam didn't know Tate was flying it, so it's not like he was playing smart basketball. I saw it more as "this shot is going in, so I'm going to jog back now." Good thing Tate didn't do that.

HS
Sampson8080's picture

If Kam flies to the glass there, it greatly increases the change of an easy Maryland layup in transition. It appears he was filling his assignment.

HS

KW, my favorite Buckeye for the last 4 years.  Go Kam!!!!!!

Excellent article IMO, on a fundamental topic.

Compare and contrast.  Anyone can do it, but it's the values and process chosen to do it... that make words we define, matter.

A picture [gif] is worth 1,000 words?  IMO an undefined word can launch 1,000 ships....

A couple fundamental values, applied daily... inspire and sustain team building.

HS

A very well written and considered article, Johnny. This team is a blast to watch.

HS

I was at both games but I'm sure you could see it on TV too, The effort on defense energized the crowd and that, in turn, energized the team even more.

We're never going to be mistaken for the Duke or Kentucky fan bases, but give us a team that gives a shit and we'll show up.

HS
nvbuckeye's picture

Watching the game last night here in western Nevada, that Tate rebound reminded me of my friend Critz on our Air Force BB team.  He always went after rebounds like that, too.  This team is playing like a team every game.  Thank goodness there are no Lovings or Williams on this team.  I will be filling up my VDR this winter with Buckeye Basketball.  It should be a great ride from now until March.

GO BUCKEYES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

HS
bucksfan92's picture

I honestly think Tate is the only player in CBB who could have made that play last night. Not only did he hustle to the rim, and use his “nose for the ball” instinct, but he also had incredible body control to maintain balance, stay in bounds and make a great pass

HS
Stampeding Buckeye's picture

That is one reason Tate is my favorite Buckeye BBaller this year. I love his hustle and desire!

Didn't really recognize that it was Throwback Thursday.  I don't think I've been to a game since those actually were our home uniforms.  But had to come out and see if this team was as exciting in person as they looked on TV.  Was it strange to not think they were going to fold after going down by 7?

Another play that could've been mentioned that demonstrates the Buckeye Basketball attitude is when Dakich had a nice steal but missed his layup (he could argue that he was trying to pass it), but CJ Jackson hustled down the floor to follow up the play.

So much good basketball stuff that I saw while watching these last 2 games.
