He ain't even stretch doe!!
Keep moving up Bucks!! Way to go!
Keep fighting CalPoppy
Unbelievable that a team that couldn't even sniff the NIT last year now has a ranking beside its name. Holtmann is a damn wizard.
The all around effort on both ends of the floor compared to last year is mind blowing. Last year offensively things seemed so clunky and forced. And defensively it seemed like players were just going through the motions. It's been a few years since OSU basketball was watchable. It's amazing how a coaching change completely turned things around. If this team keeps winning, makes the NCAA tournament and wins a few games you'd have to think Holtman gets COY
Don't listen to Freddy P. Soft
Sorry, but Big Ten COY awards are all reserved for Kirk Ferentz.../s
Agree completely with you, Crusher, in regards to effort etc, but having a healthy KBD is the difference this year. He is a legit national POY candidate so far this year.
I would say COY is probably Holtmann's to lose at this point. As OP said, this team didn't even get an invite to the NIT last year, was picked to finish in the bottom third of the conference, and is already 1 win shy of their last year's total Big Ten wins - just 6 games in. The transformation in the first 20 games of this season has been complete night and day.
I came. I saw. I conquered.
Not so fast Chief, this site lists Purdue's Painter as the leader in the mid season clubhouse with Holtmann as a possible from the field.
Man, I don't know how much weight I'd put on Andy Katz' opinion here. He's got Jay Wright and Tom Izzo in that list, as well. Maybe my definition of COY and his are different, but I hardly think either Izzo or Wright deserve to be in the discussion.
If you don’t think Izzo or Wright deserve to be in the discussion for having built successful teams already, are you cool with Urban never winning it either?
I would say back in 2012, Urban probably deserved it. Took a team that had really nothing to play for other than pride 12-0 in his first season. Izzo and Wright have built a championship calibur brand at both their institutions. I'd say expectations at those two schools are to make the Final Four every year, or at the very least Elite Eight, and I would think missing those goals is a disappointment that doesn't deserve coy merits.
I think Chris Beard would have to be right up there as well but Holtmann will certainly be a finalist for it if we keep winning.
WTG , took the poll long enough.
FWIW the computers all had us outside the top 25 up until this week too. So it wasn't like the pollsters were biased.
I agree. I think 22 is really low considering how the hoops polls tend to treat teams that are trending one way or the other. This team has 3 straight 20 point wins over #1 in the country, a pretty good Maryland team, and on the road vs. a below average team. We should be 18 I think, but whatever... keep going in the right direction and HAMMER THE WILDCATS!
Sparty is #9 now, not #1. They hurt our resume a little by losing to Michigan over the weekend (yes, we beat Michigan too, but all things considered it probably would be better to have a "signature win" over a top 5 team).
Yes, but OSU blowing out MSU is a big reason why the dropped as far as they did in the first place.
They only fell three spots last week. Losing again makes them look like they have bigger issues.
AND the OT win against Rutgers AT HOME.
I haven’t read or heard anyone say that Sparty has issues. Decourcy said on B1G that they have the highest ceiling of any team.
Yes, of course MSU losing again after OSU beat them dropped them further. I'm just saying that the flaw in basing a win off of a team's current seeding is that once a team loses, they will almost surely drop. So to say OSU didn't have a win against a #1 team is unfair. They were #1 at the time, and dropped after OSU beat them. I'll take a win over a team that is now ranked a bit lower than a loss over a #1 ranked team that stayed put, that's for sure.
Izzo will make some serious noise in that NCAA tourney. You can count on that. Beating MSU this year is a solid win no matter where they're ranked.
Saban on a cart eating cold pizza
If a team is ranked #22, any win over a higher ranked team is "signature".
I agree, wish you were ranked 18, or even higher! Come on, you can do it.
I'd have been happy if the polls had still kept us out... with something then to prove. There's still plenty of time to climb and get a good NCAA seeding (not that the selection committee is bound by or uses the same criteria as the poll voters) if the wins keep coming.
Lunardi has you in a six seed. Keep on winning, and you might get up to a 3 or 4 seed.
The world is yours
Thanks for ruining my day...this song will now be embedded in my brain
Holtman for president!
There can be only one
At least National Coach of the year.
Wow. What a difference a year makes. Last year was difficult for me to tune in and watch. This year I have been making plans around their games so I can be home to watch. The excitement is back!
i don't mean to sound whiny, but 22 seems low after the way we've been blowing teams out in conference play...
"Because I couldn't go for three." - Woody Hayes
Kinda hard to figure out who to swap with though. The teams above us have the same or fewer number of losses. Clemson is at 20 and they beat us.
Just keep winning (and have other teams lose) and we'll climb in due time.
Having four losses and no good non-conference wins is kind of dragging them down right now. RPI also has them 22nd and KenPom has them 16th, so it's hard to argue that it's a really egregious slight.
That said, their next 6 games are all against non-tourney teams, so if they take care of business (combined with attrition elsewhere), they'll very likely be near the Top 10 (!) by the time that game at Purdue kicks off in early February.
Not sure we'll climb too much in the near future unless teams 10-20 all crap the bed. We don't have any opportunities to impress until Purdue. Just need to avoid faceplanting for a while.
In the past 2 weeks there were 12 teams in the Top 25 that "crapped in their bed".
Avoiding being one of those teams is always a good way to climb in the rankings, given that there are ALWAYS such teams.
I'm seeing us as a 6 seed in the latest Lunardi bracketology, which is crazy. I was expecting a 6 seed in the NIT. Never been so damn happy to be wrong.
What seed does Ohio State get with 6 losses and a share of a Big Ten Title?
My guess is a #3 seed in that scenario.
The problem is that to some degree at this point, OSU is "expected" to win against teams with a lower RPI. So if you end up with 6 losses, and the two losses are to Purdue and Michigan, you will about hold serve. If you beat either Purdue or Michigan, that will help you out quite a bit. If you lose any home games, that will hurt quite a bit. And how you do on the road matters . . . win against NW, Indiana, and PSU, and it helps a bit.
The other issue, of course, is the Big 10 Conference Tournament. This year, the tournament ends a full week before the NCAA tourney seeding is announced. This means Big 10 teams might be a bit rusty, or it means they might be well rested. But there is one other thing that obviously happens with the Big 10 Tourney being finished a week early. Because of this, the Big 10 tourney can be taken into account in setting seeding for the NCAA's. It was hard to do this last year, when the championship game ended just before the NCAA announcement. Michigan got a 7 seed, even though they ended up winning the Big 10 tourney. In the Big 10, they were seeded 8th, upsetting the 1, 4, and 2 seeds to win out. But this didn't appear to help out in seeding for the NCAA.
Look at the seeding of the Big 10 Tourney this year. The 1 through 4 seeds have a double bye. It is important for OSU to win their first game, beating whichever lower seed they face. The second game will be critical for whether you jump ahead or not. OSU will almost undoubtedly face Purdue, MSU, or Michigan for their second game. You have already shown that you can convincingly beat MSU and Michigan on your home floor in Columbus. Can you beat them at the neutral site of Madison Square Garden, or beat Purdue? If you do that, it will prove something to the selection committee. Can you win out? That will show even more.
At this point, I think that OSU will either tie for first or come in second place in the Big 10 in the regular season. This would mean that you would face MSU or UM in the 2nd tourney game. How do you like your chances? Beat either of them again in the Garden, and you will shock the world and probably get a 4 - 5 seed. Win out in both the season and the Big 10 tourney, and you might jump as high as a 2 - 3 seed.
Just keep working.
I know there's a game Saturday, and my ass will be there.
I Believe In Ohio State.
Thad was let go a year or 2 to late.
C'mon that's unnecessary, let the man live happily in retirement. Just be grateful we have Holtmann as our coach. If we would've let Matta go two seasons ago, we probably would have Archie Miller as our coach right now and who knows where we'd be as a program. Everything played out this way for a reason.
"The hate of men will pass, and dictators die, and the power they took from the people will return to the people. And so long as men die, liberty will never perish" - Charlie Chaplin
Maybe , but we might not have gotten Holtmann if we fired Thad a year earlier, so I’m glad things worked out this way.
I agree he was kept around too long BUT I think Holtmann has a great situation on hand with Tate and KBD being his senior leaders. No way any team led my Amir Williams or Loving make this kind of attitude adjustment in my opinion. The leaders bought in and so has the rest of the team. I love that you can see everyone knows their role and have accepted it. We know what to expect from each guy every game.
Keep Calm and Buckeye On
I was 100% in favor of Matta being let go and had said as much before last season started, that failure to finish in the top 4 of the conference should have led to his dismissal. That said, Matta had earned the right to get his ship back in order. When Thad said the 4 recruit who left were bad seeds and was bringing back Jent and "going to coach the way I used to coach" etc, then I think given his previous track record he deserved a chance to turn it around.
He had a veteran team last year with Lyle, Thompson, Tate, Loving, Diop Williams etc all having extensive starting experience plus a decent recruiting class again and frankly a fairly weak OOC schedule and the B1G being down a bit there was no excuse to not finish in the top 4-5.
Even with Diop hurt they still "on paper" had the talent to finish in the top 5 or top half at least which only would have required going 10-8 ie barely over .500, but instead they floundered as the year went on, going 7-11 and then having the debacle against this very same Rutgers team in the B1G tourney.
He should have been let go then.
I am happy with how it has all turned out, but firing Matta prior to last year to me would have been a bit premature.
I can't argue against any of that.
ONE Not Done!
That's right. Keep grinding and prepare for Northwestern. Holtmann's challenge is to keep building confidence and teach how to handle success.
Seems reasonable. Just keep winning. And, we're only four spots below Kentucky. LMAO!

The Boilermakers (17-2) check in at No. 3 in the AP poll, winners of their last 13 games.
Target on their back.
Awesome news ! Also , 6 very winnable games coming up before the trip to Purdue , a chance to climb higher !
Next two games will be tough - Northwestern and Minny. Let's get to 8-0 boys, keep the hammer down!
With those teams it depends which one shows up, they've both had a couple of clunkers recently. I don't know if it's good or bad thing that Ohio State hasn't had one since Keita figured out he's THE man.
Also, Minnesota is a neutral site game.
KBD is certainly feelin’ it
Jae’Sean is a hustle machine
AJ, Cam, Andrew, Micah are getting better
Wesson Brothers may turn into a key tandem if Andre gets it in gear
The focus now should be getting to 7-0. One game at a time. Enjoy each step of the process/journey.
All the respect feels great.
Thank you Coach Holtmann for getting a lot out of these guys, thank you players for playing to your potential and bonding as a team, and thank you Coach Matta for recruiting most of this talent in the first place.
"Luck is my middle name. Mind you, my first name is Bad."
I was hoping for one more week out of the Top 25 to make that chip on the shoulder feel a little heavier.
8 teams ranked higher than Ohio State with significant high school recruits from Ohio
Well deserved! Keep it up Bucks. The effort this team plays with is incredible and really, makes me as a fan so happy!
Great accomplishment. Crazy to think it's been 3 years since the squad has last been ranked. With this comes a healthy awareness. Teams are starting to circle you on their calendars. I believe Cam Brady said it best...
Make preparations in advance. You never have trouble if you are prepared for it.
Would probably be top 15ish if we didn't choke that game away against Butler.
And beat 15-2 Clemson when they had them down 10 in the 2nd half at home. Ohio State wouldn't have blown that 10 point lead now.
Not sure about that.
It was clear the Buckeyes ran out of gas that game. I think they were running on fumes the 1st half as well, but they just happened to be shooting well. As Holtmann said at the time, it was 'fool's gold.'
Those circumstances were so uniquely against the Bucks despite being the home team. They had just finished up playing 3 games in 4 days on the other end of the country with the last game being a devastating loss the Sunday before their Wednesday match up with Clemson. Clemson, on the other hand, played a low level mid major the Friday before at home. They had 4 full days to rest and get ready for the Bucks.
Even if the team was playing with the confidence they are now, that wouldn't change the unfortunate circumstances involved with that game.
I play, coach stays. He goes, I go.
But maybe the players needed that Butler loss, and the Clemson one, to figure out what (and how much) they needed to improve.
I decided to subscribe to BTN...just to see dem Buckeyes.I haven't done this for Buckeye Basketball for a very long time. GO BUCKS !
Just think OSU could have ended up with Greg Freaking McDermott. We got lucky as shit Holtmann said yes, lets all take 22 celebratory shots for being ranked for the first time since D Russ was breaking ankles
— Nicholas Shook (@TheShookster) January 15, 2018
Def would take Holtmann over McDermott. Saw enough of him at UNI. Not a terrible coach though and Creighton is pretty good. They beat Butler at least this year ha.
Holtmann coach of the year
I hope so, but my gut says it will go to Kirk Ferentz.
He had insider info. Not fair.
Loving the way the BasketBucks are playing. Holtmann is getting it done, but these stand out:
1. KBD is BACK and on a mission.
2. JT is a real leader and will not be deterred
3. These Buckeyes have a GREAT chemistry, are unselfish and playing for each other.
There is a LOT of season left and Purdue is on the horizon, but these Buckeyes are to be taken seriously.
but can he pass the ball down field
with surgery on both shoulders I reckon he can
2 weeks ago we didn't have any quality wins, but we took care of business against teams that we were supposed to. Now we have a win against the then #1 team in the country, another predicted #6 seed (Michigan), and a Maryland team that's currently picked to be in the last 4 in. Those are great to have in our back pocket now that Purdue and a rematch with Michigan are the only potential quality wins left.
The other side to that is not a bad loss there either. The 4 losses are all to quality opponents who should all be tournament teams.
Here are some comparisons to last year
FG% - 49.4 vs 46.3 - improved by 3.1 Percentage points, that improvement has meant 35 additional baskets made or 70 points
3pt% - 37.6% vs 35.6% - 2.0% improved, that's nearly 8 more 3 pointers made on the season or an additional 8 points
FT% - 72.6% vs 68.2% - 4.4% improved, thats worth another 16 points minimum
Opp FG% - 40.4% vs 41.6% - 1.2% improved cutting 26 points out
OPP 3PT% - 33.8% vs 35.6% - 1.8% improved cutting another 8 points out
Asst/TO Ratio - 1.24 vs 1.03 - 20.3% improved
Steals/Game - 5.95 vs 5.19 - 14.6% improved leading to 14-15 more steals on the season so far
Blks/game - 4.05 vs 3.78 - 7.1% improved leading to 5 more blocks
Reb Margin - +4.7 vs +2.2 - 114% improvement
Fouls/Game - 17.2 vs 17.6 - 3% improved, so the improved defense that shows up in steals, Opp FG%, Opp 3PT%, Blks etc, has not come at the expense of more fouls
all of this has lead to being 15-4/6-0 thru 19 games rather than 12-7/2-4 at this same point last year.
Thanks for compiling and analyzing that, Jpf.
Good stuff, JPF. I would also add that we have played a tougher schedule so far this year versus last year.
The non conference schedge may not be dramatically more difficult, but the circumstances of the schedule were way different. To have to play 3 legit opponents in 4 days on the other end of the country and then fly back home to face Clemson, Wisky (in Madison), and UM in a 6 day time period is way more difficult than any stretch in November or December of last season.
Thank you for your time and effort! We have an unusual situation where a team first coach has as his leaders two players who are team first guys! Let us enjoy each game and each opportunity to watch them as they share in this revitalization together! To have been on the operating table or watch the bed as your brother breathes, these are the moments that fuel them in such trivial things as basketball games! When you are coaching men like that who are good teammates, then getting buy in from the other guys becomes MUCH easier! Go Bucks! Beat the Cats lets get to 7-0!
I would rather be on hand with 10 men then elsewhere with 10,000 - Timur Lenk
Congrats Buckeyes. Focus on 1 game at a time. Rankings are much more interesting and important towards mid February.
Biggest factors to the turnaround:
1a. Coach Holtmann
1b. We really needed to get some of those guys off the roster last year.
2. KBD is back
They're still going to struggle at times (need more depth) but it's at least a legit team now.
Still should have benched JT after the Oklahoma game....
You can see this team learning and improving after each game. Even after the loss to NC they learned from it and have made adjustments. A sign of good things to come.
Very proud of the way this team has managed to turn things around! Coach Holtmann has done a fantastic job and its nice to actually enjoy watching buckeye basketball again (The last couple of years havent helped my blood pressure). Great job, fellas! Buckeye nation is proud of you!!
I think the OSU turnaround is the story in the Big 10 this season. Coach Holtmann has done a masterful job. Matta just didn't have the health to continue coaching and recruiting at a high level.
I am really looking forward to the rematch. It will tell both Michigan and OSU a lot about their teams, respectively.
The team plays hard every night which win or lose makes it fun to watch. Also a lot of players bought in and look like they're having a blast. I also think this will really help with recruiting and get a team Holt wants to build.
I was really worried about the Purdue game, but the more I watch them and OSU play I don't see why OSU cant beat them. The only thing is, its at Purdue.
I am worried about EVERY game, yet enjoying the way this team goes about trying to win!
AND they have a 7-2 and a 7-3.
Keep getting the W and the rest will play out as it will.
