Was the incident “being a pompous a-hole”?
Doubt it. It must have been something that was not normal behavior for him.
Beat everyone, in every sport, all the time!!!
By his standards, this doesn’t seem very egregious.
I thought the exact same thing. How messed up is it that if you or I did something like this, we'd be considered complete assholes, yet when he does it, the thought is "ok he's been doing this since the mid 90s.. what is the big deal?"
Thank god he's not on today! GO Bucks!
wonder if they could look at the refs that did the ohio state iowa football game this year 12 flags thrown very next week ohio state had like 2 seems terrible amount of difference in just one week
OSU got hammered in Iowa City and don’t think the refs had anything to do with it. Outplayed, out coached and out disciplined.
Just posting and hoping my comment isn’t deleted.
I.. uh... I need my coffee before trying to read this.
When dealing with that level of lunacy, I'd pour some whiskey in that coffee while you're at it...
If I must choose between peace and righteousness, I choose righteousness! -Theodore Roosevelt.
He needs to retire. He's been a sideshow for decades.
It's about time.
A failure to plan on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part.
He's been a jerk for years. It's amazing to me that this incident is even making any waves.
Varys: I've always hated the bells. They ring for horror, a dead king, a city under siege.
Tyrion: A wedding.
I am getting tire of these so called stars who wants to complain to the ref about anything and everything.
Yes we have one on our team that is getting close to the piss me off line for watching.
Playing the focking game! and let the coach work the refs.
You must not watch CBB. He’s been ALL ABOUT HIMSELF since he began officiating. It’s not about whiney athletes. Wake up.
Bye bye Teddy. It’s about time someone had the balls to do this!!!
He’s been ALL ABOUT HIMSELF since he began officiating. It’s not about whiney athletes.
To be honest, I'm tired of both.
Three things cannot be long hidden: the sun, the moon, and the truth.
F' em Keez I agree 100%. Im to the point where basketball is unwatchable because of the prima donnas always bitching about calls and no calls. Kids have no respect for the officials. Why the hell do you have to bitch every single time someone breathes on you? Shut your mouth, roll the balls out and play for Christ sake. This is exactly what you get when the #1 player in the world is bitching every minute about no-calls.
Has Teddy been wrong in the past? Sure, no doubt. But I have a hard time believing that this was the first time Berry had bitched all game. Getting swerved is better than getting T'd up in a game, lest losing to fucking Wofford. Maybe just play the game, and as Keez said, let the coaches work the officials and you can focus on beating teams like the smallest school in D-1.
Watching the clip only, I agree wholly, Holy. Teddy coiuld have T'd him up. If he allowed the kid to complain to his face, or god forbid, bump, etc, without a "T" he would have really been taken to task. The kid made his point, Ted made his point.
Good. He’s a disgrace.
What a complete ass clown. Good riddance.
Excellence and greatness will be remembered...there is no room for average. None. - Urban Meyer
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ - Joey Bosa
It's because he pulled his antics out of conference. Around the B1G he's gotten away with it but when he's pulling a disrespectful move like that in an out of conference game they have little to no patience for it.
Time to go Teddy
Thank god. Worst ref in any sport
He’s actually a VERY GOOD official if you take away the antics
That's just not true
Yes it is. He gets The calls right 98 percent of the time. If he was not a good official in terms of making the calls, he wouldn’t have officiated at the level that he has for so many years.
Take away the antics and he is good
To say this I can only assume that you've seen every ref in ever sport. Have you?
I bleed scarlet...literally
Pretty much. Especially college basketball. I also watch a lot of CFB, NBA and NFL
And if you’re not good, your not on TV because you’re not in the pool of Officials who work big time basketball
You don’t go deeeeeeep into the NCAA tournament without being great. These guys are assigned game to game during the tournament based on their most recent performance. No room for error.
I'm not sure I even know who this guy is, but I might recognize him if I looked harder. However many refs in a number of sports (looking at you baseball) seem to think that they are stars of the show, rather than a required accessory.
See also: a significant percentage of targeting calls
Those are not “look at me”calls. They are calls officials are given directives to call (and can and have been overturned), If they miss this call, they can be subject to league suspension for not enforcing the rules.
I have always thought umpires have done a fantastic job. They seem like they’re always involved because well, they are. They have to make a call every pitch, regardless of what happens. They also make calls at an unbelievably high correct rate.
Given that there’s what 4 or 5 guys any given night over a 160 game schedule for MLB and you hear about something egregious maybe once a month if that id say mlb refs are doing pretty well.
Its the very few bad apples that change the perception though
We need to get these umpires to help out with some other sports!
That's the worst part Valentine's bullshit. He is literally the only ref I know by name in any sport because he is so damn awful
I know Ed Hoculese because of his guns.
Sadly, those guns are now swinging ropes. Father Time has taken its toll on the old man.
The “look at me” of the NFL.
I get not wanting to listen to a player argue for a foul (especially from UNC), but to blatantly turn around and make a show out of it is unnecessary. Surprised this led to something, nothing new for him
Exactly. He should just waive the player off and put the ball in play. Instead he acted a 2 year old with a temper tantrum, took the ball and went home. There is no place in the game for those kinds of antics.
Couldn't have happened to a nicer official...
"Tina, you fat lard, come get some DINNER!... Tina, eat. Food. Eat the FOOD!"
He's been around so long. I am sure he is losing his patience with a bunch of entitled little kids who whine all the time.
Gotta love it.
No. That’s not it. He’s been a showboat forever.
Nothing to do with patience.
LOL TV Teddy started the entitled whiny schtick! There are plenty of ways to ignore a complaining player than to make a spectacle of oneself, but of course that would defeat the purpose of the original whiny brat Teddy. He needs to GTFO!
All of you see these entitled kids (bball is the worst) throw tantrums for everyone to see when a call doesn't go their way. Yet we're all gonna sit here and ostracize the ref when he just gets tired of it and turns around. TV didn't T him up or impact that game at all. And um, are these opposing takes that bad that you're all DVing them out?
The fact that I know Teddy's name says it all. There are only two basketball officials' names that I have known and his is one. Good referees are anonymous. I have seen him make calls 35 feet away from behind when the play is 3 feet from the ref with a clear view. I have heard his whistle before the contact occurs. And I have seen way to much theatre from him.
this^^^^ They should have that quote "A good referee is anonymous" emblazoned in every ref/ump/official locker room.
Orange Whip? Orange Whip? 3 Orange Whips!
Good Bye Teddy! Hope they make it permanent. You have been a pimple on the a-- of BIG basketball for waaay too long.
"Bring back St John"
They totally trashed Teddy's TV time? That's tragic!
Valentine has been trying to be the center of attention for many years. I wonder how he stays employed with all of his antics and the fact that he is not all that good of an official.
I say this as an aging guy myself but I don't understand how basketball and football have gotten to the point where everyone is chiseled and can run top end speed yet these billion dollar businesses keep trotting out 60 year old dudes to officiate. Heck for most of them officiating isn't even their full time gig.... just doesn't make any sense.
As a union employee, you can rest asure that those refs are in a union......Young guys wait their turn.
Truth. It sucks.
The Three Stooges: Hightower, Rucker and Valentine.
First I've seen that UNC clip...dude is a jackass.
I'm not around that much, running exhausted and lost...
I never really minded him. I actually thought the way he would call the blocking foul was pretty funny.
Yes, what Ted did was bush-league, but under the circumstances, I can't find fault with against any action that puts UNC basketball or its "prima donna" players in their place. The NCAA surely won't !!!!!!
That was uncalled for turning your back like that on a player on the floor..... have always thought he thinks he is more important than the game. I would rather not see him in the big ten - but that's just me.....
Wasn’t a fan of his officiating, but I met him twice and he was very cordial. It was however, when he was early in his career.
"Age wrinkles the body, quitting wrinkles the soul" Woody Hayes
Hey Teddy, you missed a great game, and I am oh so happy you did!! Hope to never ever see or hear about you again as long as I live!
There are many refs who should be forcibly retired. Valentine is high on the list.
With all of the lousy officials out there, people are crazy if they think it's a good thing Ted Valentine is considering retirement. Even the ACC wants him to lay low to let this pass before he resumes calling as many of their games as he can handle. Theatrical or not, he's one of the best out there and college basketball needs more technically proficient officials like him.
Surprised I got DV earlier for saying he was probably sick of the entitled kids throwing fits when they get called for a foul. He's no saint but he isn't that bad. The league will let him know when he goes too far. Not fans. I actually think these kids need to be taken down a notch or two sometimes. Humble is a good thing.
