Snap Counts: Michael Jordan, Damon Webb Lead Ohio State in 2017 Snaps After 58 Buckeyes Play in Season-Ending Cotton Bowl Against USC

Didn't we have a 1,000-rep club some years? I know we had a longer postseason in 2014, but I wonder if the fact that nobody surpassed 1,000 is indicative of an overall slower offense. Blowouts probably canceled each other out and if anything, I think we had fewer blowouts this year.

I believe the 1,000-rep club pertained to practice snaps. I could be wrong but I remember some of the older guys sitting out some practices because of the 1,000-rep club.

Actually a 2,000 rep club - which Meyer has implemented/monitored since 2015 (that I'm aware of), tracks both practice and game reps.

I'm not around that much, running exhausted and lost...

Those "ors" at DE sure make a ton of sense now.

To be honest, I was really happy with what I saw from Kendall Sheffield in the post season, hopefully he's back for another round next year.

Urban Meyer left an incredible legacy. 12/4/18 Ryan Day begins his.

That's pretty damning on Booker. Wonder if we see an exit from him.

It really is, but he struggled pretty badly for much of the year. It sucks, guy seemed to have talent but seemed lost back there.

HS

it's not the "badly"; it's on the leaders and team if they do not find out 'why'.

pierces the narratives of 'get better each practice' and 'better next year' and so forth.

directly contradicts 'problem-solving' as a continual, fundamental process essential to individual and team building.

Yeah, what is the deal with Booker? He wasn't lights out this season but he also wasn't abysmal. It's sort of odd.

It's crazy how truly even of a rotation it was with the 4 ends and the 3 CBs. It seems like they must keep a snap count in game on these guys.

I think it helps with recruiting as well. "Come to Ohio State... you think the depth chart looks crowded? Well, we have 4 starters at DE" and they're not lying.

I believe Booker had a few injuries that kept him out of games. He has 1 more year so hopefully he busts out. Tressel always said you need some seniors to make a difference. I was really excited when he was recruited, he was a playmaker coming out of high school.

MICHIGAN STILL SUCKS

thanks for the "a few injuries" input, Awlin.

of course the devil's in the details... or narratives...

but it's a start to explaining!

We'll see if Urb gives him a 5th year.  Personally I think he has reached his upside and looking forward to the 1st and 2nd year LB's(Browning, Werner, Jones) getting more time next year.

Notice his last action was the dreaded Iowa game... I wonder if that had something to do with it since it would have been his man, the TE, who consistently burned us and cost us so much of that game. Makes one think... Did he not see any more action for fear of a repeat, which OSU couldn't afford down the stretch with marquee matchups?

I posted the stats a while back, but Booker wasn't even OSU's worst LB in coverage... it was Baker, by far. I think like Webb last season that the casual fan thinks Booker played a lost worse than he actually did. Was he a playmaker though? No.

Didn't Booker have a concussion? He missed at minimum 2 games while in protocol.

Really impressed with Jordan Fuller's emergence this year.  Glad he didn't go up north

CJ Saunders might play a bigger role next year if Mick can turn him into a gymrat.  Seems to catch whatever comes his way

I've got a feel CJ will be the first one in, last one out at the WHAC during the offseason. Spending a lot of time in the weight room and film room.

Zach Turnure is so fun to watch on special teams: everything he does is 100 mph

Insert sad face emoji. He will be missed on Special Teams that is for sure.

Thumbs up to a team first guy, Billy Price, and all others like him - 900 snaps in the trenches.

Thumbs down to Ward, maybe a good player but definitely not a great teammate - 628 snaps in the back field.

Who really had the most to lose?

HS

although we lost one for the season, remarkable OL pt consistency overall.  Several games OL performance earned rotation opportunities for other linemen....

Robert Landers sure made the most of his 16 plays. He was fantastic at DT.

Go Bucks!

The USC game results were never in question. Would the Earth have exploded if Haskins had played 6 series towards the end ? Obviously not. Hopefully in '18 We start game planning a better attack plan. So overdue that we use the use the offensive coordinator. We could have been much better with coach Wilson in control.

HS
Huskerbuck's picture

Hopefully Urban will allow Wilson more input or at least listen to what he has to offer.  Wilson seemed to get more out of less at Indiana than with a more talented roster at OSU.

HS

totally, Buckeye in Florida.

i honestly, actually really had 'no questions' when it was 0-0, or 7-0, or as we 'dominated' no scoring in the 2H....

but... i knew all along OK & Iowa ... and so froth....   ;-{)}

anyway, when USC scored i knew it was a fluke, and would never, happen, again....   LOL

I like how our defensive coaches deployed the defensive ends for the vast majority of our snaps. USC's strength is the passing game and we needed every bit of their rushing capabilities. That's a great adjustment and shows that they aren't afraid, or too prideful, in mixing it up.

Victor really had 24 snaps in the Cotton Bowl? Sorry, I didn't notice him much . . .

Also, Kendall Sheffield really arrived in this game! A lot of us were pretty rough on Gareon Conley in 2014, too, and he turned out alright.

I can see Sheffield turning into a monster in 2018. He has great size and athleticism, so if Sheffield can continue to develop his technique and understanding of the defense - i.e., "put it all together" - he has the potential to regularly abuse receivers next season.

And if Tyreke Johnson gets some snaps next season, too . . . I don't know if they'll always cover receivers like a blanket, but I would fear for opposing receivers' poor little bodies . . .

HS
Buck68's picture

I was impressed by Sheffield's mental toughness when he got soundly beaten early and USC kept throwing against him.  Seems to this amateur that Sheffield improved such that he 'let' our other DB's 'get their fair share' of targets....   ;-{)}

IMO Sheffield is decidedly ahead of Conley's responses when he was 'the go at guy' in 2014.

I think the lesson SHOULD be not to be too rough on young players. Yet every year it's wash, rinse, repeat.

Isaiah Prince is a good example..Conley, etc

It is amazing how durable and how many snaps a player will take in a season.  What endurance those 500+ must have.
