I very very rarely would call for someone's job, but Ed Terwilliger cannot be retained after this. YOU HAD ONE JOB! Recruiting Assistant should equate to KNOW EVERY GOD DAMN RULE KNOWN TO MAN ABOUT RECRUITING! I know, every school has rules violations because they are petty and moronic, but not every school violates a rule that loses a chance at a 5* who will likely go to a rival. The Ohio State University is also not every school.

Touche. "Rule 4-5-8 Article II, Section 3, Verse 6 in the NCAA Book of Matthew Chapter 4: Coaches are not permitted to make eye contact with a recruit or his family between the hours of 10:00am and 11:00am on Sundays while engaged in a discussion about any food or food product. Eyes shall remain fixated on the shoelaces and hands are to remain in pockets"

So you're saying we need to hire a few engineers to recruit for OSU between 1000-1100 on Sundays? I'll volunteer.....

HS
GVerrilli92's picture

Would there need to be some form of discourse on the staff's part to prove that they didn't actively recruit him if he does still choose Ohio State?

Or is it up to somebody like, I don't know, say a pissed off James Franklin to find some shred of evidence suggesting that we made illegal contact with the recruit?

This is an absolute no-win situation for Ohio State. Either we lose out on a 5-star prospect at a position of need that we allocated countless resources to recruiting, or we take him and watch the witch-hunt for contact begin.

Kitties aren't supposed to smell like cigarettes, they're supposed to smell like kitties.

HS
GoBuckeyes1020's picture

DJ, any idea what the definition of 'actively recruiting' is? I'm guessing there could have been a conversation between Meyer/Johnson and Parsons before they self reported stating 'Micah, sorry but we were unaware of a violation while you were on campus and we are self reporting. We have to stop actively recruiting you but rest assured we have a spot for you come December 20.' Can Parsons send a message to Meyer/Johnson asking if a spot is still available? Can Meyer/Johnson drop him a line today telling him there's still a spot? This would be the back door commit of all commits if somehow he signed a letter of intent to play in Columbus tomorrow morning. Long shot at best but I still buy the occasional lottery ticket in the hope of getting lucky.

According to the Lantern article, OSU also agreed to consider him ineligible for a certain period of time, which the Lantern did not specify.  Can't see a kid of that caliber going to a school where he could not even dress for at least one season (my guess at min. period of ineligibility).

HS
MDBuckeye23's picture

Could not have said it better, the NCAA and its arbitrary rules are a god damn joke. They will not police ACTUAL crimes, but will levy unbelievably harsh penalties when their pockets are impacted even in the most insignificant way.

I am still not over this situation and it happened maybe 7 years ago...

Player A - Underage, driving with alcohol at 80mph in a 65 (I think the numbers are correct) and is cited with a DUI = 1 game suspension from the school.

Player B - Sells game Jersey (which should be considered his property in a free fucking country) for 1,000 that probably paid his rent for 2-3 months = 4 game suspension

HOW DOES THAT HELP THE GAME OR HELP THE STUDENT ATHLETE?

HS

Player B - Sells game Jersey ...for 1,000 that probably paid his rent for 2-3 months = 4 game suspension

Seriously, you can't see what's wrong here? How wealthy boosters of a school could influence recruiting?

If this is not simply a cover for going away from Parsons, Terwilliger ought to be GONE.  The guy doesn't coach, so he has plenty of time to bone up on NCAA regulations.  Unless OSU did not want Parsons to begin with (and there is a lot of smoke in that regard), he essentially cost OSU a top-flight DE in a critical recruiting year for that position.  I wouldn't tolerate that as a HC.

HS
kmp10's picture

Respectfully disagree, NB64. Firing the guy seems a bit harsh, imo. In addition, there were several reports when OSU was recruiting Parsons that he was surrounding himself with the 'wrong' crowd, that he had maturity issues, and that Ohio State was concerned with his off field antics. I understand your frustration, and IF the ONLY reason Parsons and OSU parted ways was because of Ed Terwilliger being unaware of the rule, ridiculous tho it is, then I'd be more on board with you... although I don't think that, in and of itself, should be a fireable offense. There are assistant coaches who've not necessarily performed up to the expected standard and they remained on staff (one still does). We all make mistakes... it's when those mistakes are continually repeated that something as a severe as termination should be considered, at least in my opinion.

When I die, sprinkle my ashes over the 70's

So, let me get this straight, recruiting websites are allowed to charge money for the information that a recruit has visited a public university, but a recruit is not allowed to take a picture with Eddie George because people might find out that he's visiting Ohio State?

I’m gonna say...Parsons was already a ‘no’ and Ohio State used the opportunity to self-report a violation. You don’t give the NCAA a reason to start snooping around, so self-report a handful of violations and keep up the appearance that you are self-policing.  This was an obvious one anyway. Good move on the part of OSU.

HS
buckeyeupnorth's picture

"Keep up the appearance that you are self-policing"? Really?

Are you saying we just try to fake the NCAA out once in a while so we can commit recruiting violations?

OSU , as other colleges do, self report NCAA violations every year. Usually the football staff has around half a dozen or slightly more recruiting violations , all of which are minor, and remain minor because they self report AND take corrective action, as was done in this case. We have one of the largest NCAA athletic compliance departments of any D1 school and Smith has received awards regarding his compliance department accuracy and leadership on this issue.

The corrective action included suspending the staff member who allowed Parsons to meet with ESPN staff and then suspending any recruiting of Parsons. By February, the Lantern will provide a list of all reported recruiting and NCAA violations through the athletic department, football and basketball aren't the only sports with violation issues.

HS

Urban: Hey, Ed. Why don't you take Micah down to the Gameday and Fox sets so he can meet Kirk and Eddie.

Also seems a bit odd Herbie & Eddie would willingly take pics with the kid if its a "well known" rule...kinda goes to show multiple people were oblivious to the implications or is this just an obscure rule that is not closely followed & is an excuse for OSU to move on???

I am not sure there are too many well know rules with the NCAA. Other than do not give them money or equivalent things.

This sounds like the result of annual self-reporting article of things like coaches butt-dialing recruits, using smokeless tobacco on the field, or mentioning the summer job custard stand in a media interview. Meanwhile, in Chapel Hill ..... I'm sure the Lantern has an annual FOIA for the self-report summary just like 11W has one for the coaches' evaluations.

Winning is a habit. Unfortunately, so is losing.

These rules are common knowledge to many. I have seen Ohio State football put out hype videos with faces blurred out, I distinctly remember one in the last year. The face was blurred out because a recruit came to an OSU practice.

Gotta keep up on all the dumbass rules the NCAA has.  If that's even possible.  Is that possible?

Class of 2010.

First, according to ET's job description, he "sometimes" leads tours, so it's not like this is all the man does. He researches, gets info from high schools (way harder than you think) and compiles the info. Not exactly glamorous, and high-paying. I think having to go talk to UFM after this came out would be a punishment enough.

On the other hand, though, somebody should have thought, "Ya know, I've watched GameDay before, and I've never seen a recruit on a trip get put on stage. I wonder why that is?" And ESPN damn should have know better as well. Otherwise, they'd do it every week. And I'm sorry, because I think the NCAA is a bunch of dipshits, but this IS a good rule. Otherwise every 5* would be trying to get his mug on TV every visit. Sounds harmless enough, but I think we mostly agree that we don't like the recruits who always cause drama and seek the limelight, and is also an unfair advantage against the 114 schools that WON'T host GameDay each year.

The first thought in my head when I saw him on ESPN that day was, "Hmmm that's not a recruiting violation?"...  Turns out I gave the staff too much credit.

I wonder what were the other reasons why OSU stopped recruiting him, if they actually did??? Story seems a bit conflicting....

It is time!!!!!

From The Lantern:

"As a result of the violations, Terwilliger was suspended one game and received a letter of reprimand. The compliance office also prevented every athletics program from “being in the vicinity” of the College GameDay set for the rest of the 2017-18 academic year. The compliance office will “provide additional compliance education” to Ohio State’s football recruiting staff. College GameDay producers and analysts will also be “provided education” during future broadcasts involving Ohio State."

The letter of reprimand and additional education on the rules are fine. The suspension is a bit heavy handed. Barring all programs from visiting the set is crazy and ESPN should tell OSU to jump in a lake if they think ESPN needs to know the rules, too. This is OSU's responsibility to monitor.

P.S. I'd also check into the last time Compliance covered this with Football before the violation took place. Is this something they review each season? Each week before recruits arrive?

P.P.S. Someone with NCAA experience or contacts could also look into the punishments that other schools self-imposed for the same thing. This would provide a check against OSU's claim that what it did was in line with the industry standard.

WHAT I TOOK FROM THIS ARTICLE:  Although Ohio State had to end their recruitment, nothing is preventing the young man from pulling the trigger for the good guys.

So, you’re saying there’s a chance.

HS

Didn't it get reported here multiple times that it was character/influences reasons why TOSU stopped recruiting him? Would have liked for the above article to address that and whether the reason the recruitment stopped was one or the other or both.

Parsons is only going to PSU because he will play right away.

PSU replaces 7 starters on Defense next season and will be horrible.

Hope Parsons enjoys losing 4 or 5 games right away!

I, for one, would not be shocked to hear there were recruiting violations at every school. Especially the last month or 2 in a state or 2 that I won’t name but will use initials, CA and FL

My understanding of NCAA rules based on the UNC ruling is that we need to start a photo op line for any student that wants a picture with the former OSU players on staff at ESPN. That would solve it.

Dave Biddell was on 97.1 the Fan and said that this has been refuted by OSU officials.  He didn't go into detail, but chalked it up to Parson's being a "knucklehead".  Had nothing to do with this minor recruiting violation and they had cooled on him even before the Sept 7 visit for the Oklahoma game.

It kind of doesn't matter for OSU . . . you still will have an absolute killer class. When you have a dozen top 100 guys in the country, what does it really mean if you lose a couple. And Michigan's class won't be as good as their ranking last year. Meyer isn't sitting still, but is doing everything he can to improve the class.

The NCAA lets North Carolina skate free after they pass their basketball players with C's to maintain eligibility even after it's proven the players didn't even attend the classes. And OSU gets hit with a ticky-tack violation in recruiting. The NCAA is a joke.

Yes.   But even better it said 'as confirmed by ESPN, first reported by the Lantern'.

How did ESPN go about confirming it?  That makes it sound like they verified via another source to be sure. They didn't.   They suck.
