"Penn State is really good, and we are really good, so it's going to come down to bonus points."

Snyder is absolutely right. Glad we're working on that from the get-go this season. It's an odd day when the Jordans go 0-2.

Great recap Andy, the Jordan brothers will need to put together a season to remember if the Buckeyes are going to win the Natty this year. Nice idea to emulate Miami with the pin chain.

Thank you for another great write up Andy.  The Buckeye wrestling coverage separates 11W from the field.

For us to have a chance at Penn St. this year we nedd 133, 141,149, and 157 to wrestle a lot better than they did today. To be honest they looked tired on the mat and a little gassed early in their matches. Hopefully its just getting early season issues out of the way, but we will need bonus pts from them against unranked wrestlers in the tourney. I know 149 for ASU was ranked, but not highly. Hayes needs to get a little bigger for sure. M. Jordan didnt even try to get out from bottom. Not a good sign when you are down by 1 in the 3rd and you choose neutral when at the time riding time wasnt a factor. Hopefully he just wasnt 100% percent today and will show better going fwd against guys he will see in the 2nd round on in NCAAs.

Coach Ryan agrees with you on the first part, for sure. He noted in the post-meet press conference that he wanted more shots from Pletcher and McKenna in particular. I think he was pleased with Hayes, but he noted that all of the guys on that end of the roster have to get more comfortable cutting weight, and I think that may have been a factor in why the lighter weights looked a little off in their matches. It'll come.

I'm with you on the part about Micah on bottom - that was a concern last year, and I was having flashbacks during Sunday's match for sure.

Micah will avenge his loss, BoJo I’m not sure. Valencia made Bo look relatively pedestrian. Which is astounding.

Great write up Andy. Sounds like the Wrestle Bucks are off to a great start.

Not sure how I feel about the Pin Chain, but if it works for Snyder I guess it’s a good thing.

They've taken a lot of hell for the Pin Chain on social media over the past 18 hours... really the whole thing stems from J Jaggers trying to have some fun with his guys, and they definitely responded to it. I felt a little bad for Jaggers last night, actually.

He was surprised by the reaction, I think, though he noted that wrestling folks have generally been more supportive, and that most of the social "backlash" was from football fans who thought it was just Ohio State ripping off The U.

I have decided that most people on Twitter are awful, actually.

While 133, 157 and 174 didn't perform as expected, 149 and 165 were very impressive. Hayes knocked off his 2nd top 13 ranked opponent in two weeks and Campbell destroyed #6 ranked Valencia. Hayes probably is a true 141, so competing at a high level with these guys is a good sign. And Campbell is competing at perhaps the strongest weight class in the NCAAs and just showed that he can compete, and beat, some of the top guys. I don't see Campbell beating #1 thru #3, but think he could compete with any of the others. Pletcher, while perfect on the year, is winning nail-biters against unranked (but decent) opponents. The Jordans have shown that they can compete with the best, but not yesterday. Bo may get another chance at Valencia at the Cliff Keen. If not a victory, a better performance would be a sign that he can compete for a title in March. If Micah struggles on the mat, he's going to have to be less sloppy on his feet. It was good to see McKenna and Moore return from their injuries. As always, great work Andy.

It was pretty obvious that Snyder got the points to where he was up by 14, then decided to get the pin instead of the point win. Great to get to see this guy wrestle in Scarlett while we still can.

Does anyone know why Harris - who is listed as a 197 pounder on the ASU wrestling site - went at 285 insteae of Tanner Hall who was rated the #3 285 pounder?  Especially curious since ASU forfeited at 197.  Hall wrestled at Michigan and he looked ready to wrestle Sunday (and perhaps a bit pissed he didn't get the call).

There is a school of thought that says ASU Coach Zeke Jones wanted to protect his heavyweight’s record and ranking. They couldn’t win the match, so you pull Hall knowing he’s probably going to lose to Snyder anyway. Now why they forfeited 197 instead of 285... who knows.

bdhof's picture

I don't think they were protecting a ranking and/or record. Everyone would expect Hall to lose to Snyder, and that loss wouldn't have dropped Hall any. In theur only match last year, Snyder won 20-8. My guess is that Hall, who just lost Friday to Michigan (#2 ranked Coon) was banged up somewhat, and he'd only wrestle if AZST was ahead and they needed to not give up bonus points in order to win the dual. MyMar clinched the dual, so they pull Hall. Someone said on another site that since Snyder is only wrestling a few matches this year, Ryan didn't want to disappoint the home crowd and Zeke was gracious enough to play along and sacrifice his 197 to Captain America.

I heard some of those comments as well; I didn’t ask, but I had heard that Hall wasn’t happy with the decision, which is why I posed the scenario above... but ultimately I agree with your assessment, that it wouldn’t have made a difference to Hall’s standing.
