Stock Up/Stock Down: K.J. Hill Steps Up, Demetrius Knox Wins a Job and Tight Ends Get Involved in the Passing Game

Comments Show All Comments

The Buckeyes have already found the tight end 22 times in 2017 as Baugh, Berry and Luke Farrell have contributed in the passing game. Baugh and Berry each have two touchdowns on the season, already doubling the scoring output from the tight end position last season.

More of this .. please!!

WEEK 8 GAMES -  Yes, outside of those 7:30 games the slate doesn't appear great, but did you see the 4 top 10 teams losing to unranked teams last week?  CFB is the Absolute Best and we only get 14 or so weeks of the regular season. Don't miss it!

So happy to see Meech take a spot at the table, getting past that Clemson performance (and getting healthy), continuing to work hard, and then step in when the opportunity presents itself.

I think the Slobs are prime to shine these next several weeks.

Yep I’ll buy all the stock ups.

Hill is not the homrun threat that Campbell is but I agree he’s a better receiver that still has plenty of YAC potential.

Knox played very well and I’m excited to see him moving forward.

Berry is something special and really look forward to his next couple years in a Buckeye uniform.

Just posting and hoping my comment isn’t deleted.

Have to give Campbell his shot to make plays cause he has proven he can once the ball is in his hands. Anything like a 3rd and 7, etc give me Hill all day.

HS
SoulPatrol32's picture

Totally agree. Can’t take Campbell away but as stated above I think Hill is best suited as a true WR.

KJ Hill is a receiver, as in receives the ball, as in catches the ball, and he can catch anything thrown at him.

Parris is a speedster, but can't track a ball downfield or look it into his hands.  So don't throw deep to him, or even throw short sometimes.  But you can hand-off to him or throw 5-yard crossing patterns and hope he cuts loose.

Or simply coach Campbell up.

You can teach a guy to catch a ball but you can't teach 4.3 speed.

Hill and Knox made the most of their opportunities.  I hope they can carry that success into the PSU game.  I would love to see Knox pancaking a PSU D-lineman. If JT can spread the ball around to 7 or 8 targets against the Lions that will really keep PSU off balance.  Oh yeah, there is no mention of JK and JT this week because their stock has already maxed out.  With a 'woof' slate this weekend and no Buckeye game to watch, I am definitely glad that my boys have a baseball tournament at the beach.  Family Time!

Love the TE involvement! TE lining up in the backfield and sometimes even saw two TE on the field. That gives a lot of new looks and wrinkles for the defense.

The perfect red zone package is OL, JT, Berry, Baugh, Dobbins, Victor, and Mack/Hill. The whole playbook is open with that package and potentially a mismatch to exploit.

HS
SoulPatrol32's picture

The 2 TE alignment was great to see. Baugh has stepped up his game this year which is nice and Berry is just a mismatch nightmare for an opposing LB or safety.

The stock may be up at RG and TE, but those two positions are going to have to work together to help Prince keep Penn State off Barrett next weekend. That will be the true test of those 3 positions. Knox seemed to have performed well in Lincoln. I am digging Berry as the extra blocking TE in the backfield. He seems to play very physical.

TE play and involvement has been building all season.   Really like how Berry is becoming a hybrid type TE- used in passing game and as a lead blocker in the backfield.  Sky is the limit for this guy.

Berry:  versatility [FB, TE, blocker, runner]  * DECEPTION = synergy!

HS
Trebor40's picture

We recently faced a team that used a hybrid back to hurt us (Oklahoma) I can only hope that Kevin Wilson will slowly adapt that type of match up issue as Berry grows more comfortable. The nice part is Berry is already a complete physical mismatch and more than comfortable dealing with DE and OLB, he also has had one year of Coach Johnsons hand to hand combat training before switching completely to TE. He is an issue with quick twitch rarely seen in TE.

I am actually really happy with the TE production so far this season.  And further, it shows how athletic those guys are by seeing some of the plays they've made.  Good on the coaching staff for following through.

Urban Meyer left an incredible legacy. 12/4/18 Ryan Day begins his.

Stock up on Hill as a slot receiver and punt catcher. Stock down on Hill as dangerous man on punt and kick return. He just isn't explosive and doesn't have top end speed as a returner. However, he has excellent hands and absolutely deserves to continue to receive more targets coming out of the slot. I would say keep him as punt returner because he has such good hands, but Ohio State needs a playmaker at kick returner if Campbell can't go.

This is definitely where I parked my car.

HS
SilverHaven's picture

Agreed.  KJ is a much better receiver whether in the slot or out wide.
And Parris is a more explosive kick returner.

Since punts are rarely returned, I would prefer someone who can consistently catch the punt rather than return it.  There are too many disasters from fumbled (muffed for those who get technical) punts on Tressel's most important play.

SilverHaven - good point about PR.  And statistics back it up so it must 'be'.

Enjoyed the astute responses to that Tressel Red Herring Device  ;-{)}

HS
SilverHaven's picture

Coach was critically questioned why he used all-conference DB "Bomb Be Gone" Mitchell for punt returns when he rarely ran with it.  Coach responded, "He never drops it."

That's the kind of assurance we did not have with Dontre Wilson and Jaylen Marshall who had some good run backs.

HS

In the past I've been so against those stupid little swing screen passes that just get blown up by the D for a loss of 5-8 yards and sometimes get picked/fumbled, but this year Campbell is a serious threat on those.  Seems to be the only pass he can catch anyways.  Combine that with the excellent blocking by guys like Baugh and even McLaurin on the outside, I think we seriously need to consider giving Parris the ball even more in those situations.

Either way, these Wilson designed crossing routes are working to perfection.  I'm loving how he utilizes the speed of our players to bust big plays loose.  And just when the D expects another pass up the middle, we connect with the long ball to Hill or Dixon or the jump ball end zone pass to Victor.

This offense is actually fun to watch for the first time since we had Herman.  Excited for the possibilities this year.

JT was praised in 2014 as a "distributor", I think we're back to that. When he's playing point guard, we're the best. O line block, get the ball out quick to our 4 and 5 star receivers, and let them run. This model can hang with anyone, Bama included

HS
Trebor40's picture

The stock is up on most all of our offense and is currently sold out on our defensive front, we are a very large problem for the rest of the B1G Ten and unless someone truly can run against us, we will be a problem for every team in the country. These kids stop the run so well that when the opponents get a twenty yard run I am disoriented for a couple of moments and a bit furious! Look back at the tapes and just appreciate how few times an opposing team had back to runs of 5 or more yards THIS SEASON!
