Not saying there are any crooked judges in our fine legal system. But if there are some, they'll be fighting like cats and dogs to preside over this NCAA/shoe-company fiasco.
Zone6, with rotating WR's, will have 1000+ yards at all 3 WR positions this season
I think this is going to be in federal court and those judges are appointed for life and well paid so there's not much incentive for publicity, and they more than anyone understand the criminal ramifications of bribery. So no, I don't think so.
Not sure if the judges would be fighting for fame or for $$$ #bribes
EDIT: What I mean is Buckeye Jack might have been thinking that hypothetical crooked judges would be looking for $$$ not fame.
With elected judges they wouldn't be looking for fame so much as publicity to help their next election along, which isn't a concern for federal judges. I should also have mentioned I'm quite sure there is random assignment of cases in the federal system, as is the case in Ohio.
Oh yeah ,there aren't any crooked appointed judges.....

I believe you are underestimating the potential for the Lancaster franchise of the NBFL to make Drue their #1 pick in next spring’s draft. He will be signing endorsement deals with Aquafina before you know it.
Jack Tatum hates targeting penalties.
Man, where to start? First off, how is that kid from Sidney only a 3 star? Good size, great stats...maybe he can only match my 40 time.
Mirror Lake District? What the hell does that mean?
I'm not sure that the boys at Louisville are the slimiest, but I'm trying to get over the irony that the two most corrupt, Italian men in CBB both coach in the state of Kentucky.
"We gotta go win this next game and make the State of Ohio proud!"-UFM
It's not really irony, but I think it's funny that 3 of the shadiest or disgusting stories involving college coaches in recent memory involved men named Pitino, Paterno, and Petrino.
Not sure I would call the Paterno story funny. I will call it disgusting.
My re-reading of his wording leads me to believe he called the Paterno story shady and disgusting. What was "funny" was the irony that all three stories involved names that start with P.
Starts with P. And that rhymes with D. And that means the devil. Right here in River City.

disgusting stories involving college coaches
Yes, that is what I meant Avail, the similarities in the last names is kind of uncanny. Probably should have used that word instead of funny.
Nah. You were fine the first time around. It was EXTREMELY obvious that you were not calling the Paterno crime "funny."
Mirror Lake District? What the hell does that mean?
We feel that after a careful review, the students would be better served by a multi-purpose lake facility. The bottom floor will contain the lake and retail store-fronts, while the upper floors will contain apartment space with modern and comfortable amenities.
They spend waste more millions on Mirror Lake than any project on Campus.
Mirror Lake, getting back to nature. I was under the impression that that's what it was always there for. Seems like that is what we were told during orientation!
Beat everyone, in every sport, all the time!!!
I hate to wish bad on someone but I hope Pitino is prosecuted and faces some prison time in his near future. If he doesn’t go to prison, I hope at the very least I never see Slick Rick coaching another game again.
Definitely not in the college ranks, but maybe in the pros. Can you imagine the Show Cause penalty he's going to get?
I’m sure you are right. A pro team will pick him up no problem which I don’t care about since I don’t watch the NBA anyway. As long as he’s out of the NCAA I will be happy.
But can he do it in the NBA with a salary cap?!?
Oh, I'm sure there are shady ways to circumvent the cap. He could always have a sit-down with the DeBartolo's. They will show him.....for a percent, of course. Gotta let them wet their beaks.
NBA doesn't want him either
Rick Pitino has probed NBA teams on return as a head coach in recent years, but there's been no interest in him. That's unlikely to change.

+1 to all of you for the banter, and happy Friday.
Flipping bottles is fine, as long as they're not flipping people off.
Respectfully disagree. Sat next to a 9 year-old girl at the airport and watched her perfecting her "craft" for about 10 minutes before I couldn't stand it any longer and moved. 20 minutes later at boarding time, she was STILL doing it. Ready for this fad to flame out.
Now GET OFF MY LAWN :)

I listened to that Ric Flair interview on the Dan Le Batard Show and it was so sad to hear Ric talk. He’s a shell of his former self. Still trying to drive 100 mph when you have no gas left in the tank tends to do that to people. Hopefully he gets his life turned around.
There was supposed to be an ESPN 30 For 30 on Flair. I'm not sure if I missed it or if it hasn't aired yet. Am looking forward to seeing that.
Fields of Dreams
Saw the ad for it the other night during the Tommy Morrison one. I think the Nature Boy is in October.
Louisville is going to be lucky to have a basketball, let alone a basketball program when the dust settles. It couldn't have happened to slimier people, either!
I disagree. There's a slimy, insane cult in State College, Pennsylvania that should've gotten what they deserved but they skated in the end.
The folks at Baylor have an argument as well.
I think Baylor wins hands down. Crimes committed against the NCAA and college athletics at this point are basically victimless crimes. College athletics is corrupt from the NCAA on down. There are no innocent parties in this thing. The crimes at Baylor on the other hand did create innocent victims. And for that reason, I think they are the worst. In my opinion Baylor football should be shut down. Dozens of innocent lives were turned upside down in a way that they can never be fully turned upright again. And the school knew about it and ignored it for the sake of winning football games. That kind of shit needs to be stomped out, hard.
Sometimes I think protesters and boycotts are annoying and pointless, and I generally don't favor corporations or leagues capitulating to their demands, but when the CFL blocked Art Briles from getting a job just recently I definitely had a huge smile on my face. There has to be some justice for the horrific crimes that were committed under his watch. Losing his job at Baylor wasn't enough. The university also needs to pay a larger toll than it did.
They hate us cuz they aint us!! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
So the same would go for Penn State.
I agree, Baylor was the worst to me. It was more systemic that Penn State IMO.
While The Ville is a strong third place in the slimiest of the slimy, the title absolutely has to go to (Un)Happy Valley, with Baylor in the runner-up slot. Then Louisville, with Jurich as the lead clown for hiring guys like Petrino simply to win games. A bad look all the way around. Let's see some true scorched earth policy on this one and knock the Cardinals off their perch.

I blame it on the egg creams and Waffle House mentioned by D.J.
Make that a bad Espaneesh assent.

If that was your reaction, you got a bad one. An egg cream is sweet, chocolatey, and bubbly. There's nothing not to like. And it's not nearly as polarizing as Cincinnati chili.
Maybe so...it was years ago.
I'm sticking with shakes and root beer floats.
Lol fair enough
In keeping with the New Jersey motif, Stewart's Rootbeer floats!
Those are a boardwalk must - along with Johnson's Popcorn.
Man, you can get those for days in Huntington, WV! Drive up and get a hot dog while you're at it.
A nice add on to the traditional root beer float.
Are you going to OSU/RU? I got great seats, but in the Middle of the RU section.
Sounds like a weak milkshake.
The "Old School" New York "egg cream" is basically a fizzy chocolate milk soda. Love 'em.
In the Jewish deli's in Cleveland, we called them Chocolate Phosphates... So good. Great memories.
New Jersey sounds awful.
It is. I dread going there every time I'm summoned to corporate. Newark airport is the worst. Jug handles suck. People are rude at a higher than normal rate. You can't pump your own gas.
Fitzbuck | Toledo - Ohio's right armpit | "A troll by any other name is still a troll".
My company has a distribution center there that I'm required to frequent every year or so, and I dread it when I do.
But hey, all the Dunkin Donuts you would ever want as there is a store per mile there.
Despite the high cost of living, it still remains popular.
And the smell as you go by all those gas plants is attrocious. I do not like NJ either.
Outside the NYC/Newark metroplex, though, NJ is absolutely beautiful and the people are WAYYYY nicer. FWIW.
BTW - how is the newest addition to the FitzBuck family?
How do you know I have a new niece? Have you been following me? Identify yourself.
Sorry - mistaken identity :) Another 11 dubber mentioned that he wasn't going to be able to watch the game a few weeks ago because his wife was scheduled to give birth (c-section, presumably). Thought it was you.
That's my brother. I'm the one that's sorry. I forgot the sarcasm italics. Hopefully you knew I was joking.
All good. You Fitzes all look alike to me ;)
That''s New Jersey. People are always in a hurry, seem angry and are rude. To them it is normal. Anyone being polite shows they are a visitor (maybe even from Ohio).
100 WINS! Not a bad regular season at all. The struggling White Sox come to the Land for the closing series, tonight at 7:10
100-win seasons in Tribe history:
1954: 111-43 pic.twitter.com/YqmfbMCstQ
— AL Central champs! (@Indians) September 28, 2017
Hey, hold on with that "struggling" White Sox narrative. While the Sox are certainly rebuilding, they have a winning record in September overall, and are 6-2 in their last 8 games, winning back to back series vs teams that were ostensibly fighting for a wild card slot. That said, I still think at a minimum the Tribe take 2-3 and I hope they go on to win the AL again
I confess, I haven't paid attention to the White Sox outside of looking at the standings and seeing them 17 games out of the wild card. Being a life long (50+) Tribe fan, I've seen that season, and worse, and it's been a struggle for me....no offense
Magic number in the AL is two - Bauer tonight and Klubot tomorrow - I like our chances.
No reason for most people to pay attention to the White Sox, unless you are a life-long fan like me. They have been playing decent ball of late however, and knocked off/out both KC and Anaheim the last week.
My wife is an Indians fan, but all is civil unless they are playing each other. I got her MLB At Bat so she can watch her Tribe, and we switch off which game we watch. I had hoped Cleveland could take down the annoying Cubs last year, so I will root for them again in 2017. Would be a shame to have that kind of a historic run and not finish it off.

DJ, was that your mediocre 13-year old son driving 100 mph after drinking a Four Loko or two?
No. If I understand correctly: It was the 14-year-old. And he was only doing 99. And it was only one 4-Loko-- for the road.
But I'll let DJ explain more fully. Aloha.
Very interesting wmd on Sears. I had not thought of the "connection" to Amazon, but it is almost uncanny how similar the tracks are from Sears 100 years ago and Amazon now. Catalog vs Internet, opening stores, etc. Pretty wild.
Will Rutgers be any more competitive vs OSU than the Bears were last night vs the Packers? Maybe not, but I bet they will at least battle to the end. I would still take the Bucks to cover.
What will be interesting to see is Amazon in 30-40 years. Will they become stagnate and fail to evolve with the times like Sears did? S,R&CO was once an anchor in every mall and a key part of the Dow Jones Industrial Average, just like US Steel, Standard Oil and few other forgotten companies. It's one thing to build a retail empire; it's quite another to make it last.
Interesting thing is that Sears was the internet company of its day - started out as a catalog company,
Yes. That was the basis of the article. Amazon is using the Sears playbook.
And men of particular vintages will have fond memories of those catalogs, for,um, reasons.
As long as the don't get too crazy with distribution centers everywhere, or burn a lot of money testing drones for package delivery....I think they'll last. Without major overhead costs I would think you could thrive in the retail space. I think they're pretty smart with selling server space and allowing third party sales through their marketplace. They're taking over eBay. I know I buy pretty much everything from them.....
I agree they are taking advantage of today's technology and a retail market that ignored it for years. My question is will they be agile enough to not become stagnate they way Sears did? Will they recognize the next technological shift (mail order catalog to Internet to ???) and make the leap before the next Amazon beats them to it.
Great observation. Inventory killed Sears catalog. Amazon has 99 (!) warehouses, and while they cumulatively might be smaller that Sears' DC's were - and the total inventory valuations lower - and their model is different with the vendor-direct shipping that they do, that is still a heap of inventory and invested capital. Something to keep an eye on for sure.
In 30 or 40 years Amazon might be the only retailer still in business.
"I find your lack of kalua disturbing" - Darth Lebowski
Folks probably said that about Sears, J.C. Penny and Montgomery Wards once upon a time.
Now that I am sure is true. I am old enough to remember what you mentioned earlier about Sears and the like being anchors in every mall in America. And now not only are they gone, but many of the malls are as well.
Amazon may fail eventually, but it took Sears a century to finally go down, so maybe Amazon can rule the roost for decades before it all blows up.
How long is this Mirror Lake rebuild going to take? They built the Empire State Building in 10 months and we're going on 2 years working on the ML.
You beat me to it. The Shoe was built in 14 months (broke ground August 3, 1921 and opened October 7, 1922).
I walked around campus a year ago and took some pix and it looks like nothing's progressed. Maybe they're purposely dragging their feet as a way of making sure the Mirror Lake Jump tradition isn't revived.
"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." - Edmund Burke
That's exactly my guess. At the very least they drag it past the Michigan game this year to buy themselves more time to figure out how to kill the tradition. Kids should set up kiddie pools out there and jump in those.
DJ - I love Columbus and I go home as often as I can, but Jersey diners are better than a Waffle House. And like the game Saturday, it's not even close. That said, there are good diners and bad diners. Thankfully the latter are few and far between. Look at how busy the parking lot is, that's a good tip off that you've found a good one. And if an egg cream isn't your thing (a head scratcher), try the disco fries. No, they won't play disco, but they are, in fact, fries. You can thank me later. ; )
What no mention of Taylor Pork Roll or Sabrett hot dogs?
Taylor ham! Awesome!
The preferred food of nobility and divinity!
So hard to believe Mirror Lake is no more. Everytime I got out I wondered why in the hell did I just do that because it was typically freezing outside. With that being said I looked forward to it every year.
“Things may come to those who wait, but only the things left by those who hustle.”
Code's justification of the payoff process reminded me of what my Ethics prof at OSU always said. If you are about to do something, use the Ugly Headline test to think about how it looks. Don't ask if you can justify it, because you will always be able to justify it.
The guy seeing everything in shades of yellow after a huge hit may seem like an exaggeration but I believe him. I remember losing color & seeing everything in black and white for the next play (while silently praying that they didn't throw the ball to my side as I was pretty sure I would get burned on anything other than a jet route). I wish I remembered the tackle, it must have sounded amazing.
For me the blues turned green and the greens blue. Between HS football and wrestling, I've had around 10 concussions. No I'll effects yet, and I'm in my mid 40's, but I'll keep my fingers crossed.
I have gone back and forth on youth football, but just within the last 2 days I found out a kid I helped coach in baseball, 7th grader got a severe concussion in a middle school football game (suburban Columbus). Numbness in extremities, they told the parents to take him to urgent care at first, but then he started drifting out of consciousness and didn't recognize his parents, didn't know his name or address or where he was, so the called an ambulance.
He is doing relatively OK now, but definitely a scary situation. Those are the type of concussions that stay with you for awhile.
Definitely agree, it couldn't have happened to a more crooked group of ass grabbers.
Urban Meyer left an incredible legacy. 12/4/18 Ryan Day begins his.

Having lived in New York (Poughkeepsie) for 4 years and traveled with my job in both New York and New Jersey, I have to categorically state that the Diners are fantastic. But the BEST of all has to be Harold's Diner in Edison. Just Google "harold's diner new jersey" and click on images! Try it...you will NOT be disappointed. It is only about 20 minutes from Rutgers.
“...indomitable in victory, insufferable in defeat.” Woody Hayes
Schiano being unconcerned with PIs should encourage fans. I take it to mean that the issues are fixable over the next 3 games as the game with PSU approaches.
There is WAAAAAY to much Shelby County in this Skull session. I work in Sidney and I can't wait to get out of it as fast possible. I am sure that is Bowsher's motivation too. Shelby County is funny though all the small little towns have all the money and are like their own fiefdoms. Fort Loramie, Anna, Minster, and New Bremen (even though it is in augalize) all think they are so great while I just see some podunk little town. Oktoberfest is legit though.
Michigan and Ohio once fought over Toledo. Ohio Lost
Minsters in Auglaize too. You've been Sidneyfied, good luck leaving.
The offseason is the longest season.
Happy Friday, Dubbers! Seemed like this week would never end. Thankfully, the larger national basketball controversy steered the conversations away from the more contentious controversies that we started this week with.
Here's hoping for another great weekend of college football to distract us from the things that may be dragging us down.

And THAT, for you rookies out of college, is how full-grown men and professional millionaires in The League handle punt returns.
Hello Silver - hope you're enjoying the scenery across the waters
And enjoying Buckeye football away from home and watching a young team start to come together.
Hope you are too! Aloha.
Hope Urban's program is squeaky clean, because I'll bet the FBI already have people undercover looking into the same stuff happening in NCAA football .
Thanks for the kind words on Minster and the Oktoberfest, D.J. If I see you up there I'll buy you a jug.
Jersey born and bred, Egg Creams are weird, I can count how many I've had on one hand. If you want good local, low brow cuisine, imo skip the diner. Go for 1) local pizza; 2) bagels [DO NOT ORDER THEM TOASTED FOR THE LOVE OF GOD]; 2) breakfast sandwiches...BUT MAKE SURE YOU ORDER A PORK ROLL (AKA TAYLOR HAM) EGG AND CHEESE SANDWICH on either an everything bagel or a kaiser roll. I recommend it with salt, pepper, and ketchup, but I might be in the minority on that.
And personally, I think a lot of diners are very meh. I'd recommend ordering any sandwich you might want from a local deli (there are thousands) or bagel place.
And we'll drink to old Ohio, 'Til we wobble in our shoes!

I can concur with this. I was forced to go to New Jersey for work once - I was there four days - and we found a diner to eat at and the menu was as thick as a phone book, service was fast, and the food was good.
Hated everything else about New Jersey, though!

I can sort of see Schiano's point. The PI calls are hurting us, and could cost us dearly if they continue, but the players are for the most part in position, where they should be. It's mostly a matter of getting their heads turned around, trusting their leverage, playing the ball instead of the receiver. Coaching up DBs gets them to being stride for stride with receivers. Most of these penalties are not guys who are beat and out of position grabbing in desperation but guys who are where they need to be not trusting and finishing the play, turning at the right time, timing their contact, etc.. These things come with reps, not with instruction.

I'm so tired of the constant construction going on around campus. I know it's great to upgrade facilities and attract the best students; however, it's just an eye sore when I come back. I don't recognize half the buildings and I graduated 3 years ago.
I was bullshitting with a few Oklahoma fans at the game a few weeks ago and they were relatively impressed with Ohio Stadium, Columbus, bar scene, tailgating, etc., but they made a point to talk about how ugly our campus was. Other than the Oval, can't say I disagree..
Proud Graduate of The Ohio State University-2014
I agree there's a lot of construction going on, and no parking garages being built even though they're sorely needed, but when the Covelli Center is finished our athletic buildings and training centers will really be impressive. That whole area, including Jesse Owens stadium, the Schott, and the football practice fields and the baseball fields look nice already.
I feel pretty confident that you have a Google News alert set up for "Four Loko"
I live in NYC. The nearest Waffle House is 75 miles away. I know this because I am planning a trip. You can take the man out of Ohio...
Try living in Chicago. The closest Waffle House is in Indianapoils, about 3:45 away (not including the loss of an hour for the time change). And that one is not even a "real" WH-it is in a building that used to house a different restaurant. Very disappointing.
Love reading 11W but your take on NJ diners is as bad as Jimbo Harbaugh's glasses. U obviously haven't eaten in one. Keep eating at the Waffle House omg! And have fun with the diarrhea the next day.
... If I played youth football, will I have CTE?
After 23 years as a middle school football coach, I have to remind myself that were about a thousand 13/14 year-old boys (and the occasional girl) with whom I had great responsibility for their health and safety. And as I got into the latter stages of my career, I'd sometimes wake up with the nightmare of an injured player in my mind. It got to the point where that fear permeated my ability to coach. Frankly, I'm relieved that I'm retired from the profession.
I don't know what the future holds for the great game of American Football. But this may be a harbinger of things to come:
... NFL players, we’re told, know what they’re getting into by now. They’re well paid, and the trade-offs, brutal though they may be, are worth it. But for high school and youth players, who know little, or are too young and aggressive to care about side effects years down the line even if they're told, it’s a different story. You might ask yourself: Would you do it all over again if you knew then what you know now? The answer won’t change anything for you, but it might help your kids.
As for the NFL itself, if they and the officials don't take a more pro-active stance on the issue of targeting and head-to-head collisions, we're going to see more of this from last night:
I am not very smart, but I recognize that I'm not very smart. --- W.W. Hayes
If you haven't yet attended the Oktoberfest party in Munich Germany, you should put that on your calendar to do so! WOW - what a fantastic experience and one my wife and I will never forget! I don't possess the adverbs and adjectives to adequately explain and/or describe the experience but it is simply magnificent!!!
The best thing about Pastafarianism? It is not only acceptable, but advisable, to be heavily sauced
I, and a few others, disagree about Piqua having the best water in Ohio.
I went to New Jersey once. It sucked. Didn't try a diner though. If I ever have to go back, perhaps I'll try one. I tried a pizza joint, but not only was it trying way to hard to be New York (which is New Jerseys favorite past time) but it wasn't even very good.
Ohio State fans will invade High Point Solutions Stadium (what a garbage name for an amateur athletic arena) this Saturday night.
Sorry, DJ, as long as our basketball team plays at Value City Arena, we're not allowed to throw those stones.
I too will be making the short drive up 66 from Piqua to Minster today after work to join in the Octoberfest festivities. Sidney may have the Indians number this year, we shall see.
As someone born and raised in Minster Ohio, I am biased in saying this the best Oktoberfest in the state (maybe ever?). I have 8 college buddies who live all across the Midwest visiting for the 5th straight year to partake in the event- one of the best weekends of the year!
Went to the Rutgers game 2 years ago and ate at the Edison Diner on Route 1 after the game. Place was packed, even at midnight. We had a "mildly disinterested" elderly male waiter. Food was affordable and tasty. Definitely superior to Waffle House!
Real fans stay for Carmen.
