JT: Struggles to hit any pass over 10 yards.

Simba: Hits every single pass over 10 yard like its nothing.

But seriously, every pass from Haskins was on the numbers of the receiver and it was pretty to watch. Can't teach arm talent like that, period.

HS

Haha wow I love it!I kinda agree.  comparing to the slow pace Jt vs D Haskins I'd take d Haskins on garbage time any day of the week . Sad thing is d Haskins looked better with the secondary / some starters then Jt has all game hate me for saying it but appreciate the truth ! That 1 drive Haskins had  deserved a touch down. Say what you want but the offense looked a lot quicker on the passing then normal !

HS
Chicago Connection's picture

Same here. That's such a wasted weapon. I wish we'd not only be more dynamic in our play calling, but the use of players, adapting plays to personnel with different packages (just like we have our rush man package on defense), so that we'd fine ways to get McCall on the field in space, as well as run Dobbins and Weber at the same time, and, of course, throw in Haskins on obvious passing downs.

One things for sure, I don't know what we're accomplishing by calling so many screens, other than piling up garbage yards and proving to opposing coaches/defenses that we're still a horizontal and predictable and limited passing attack with J.T. under center.

Sure, he had some downfield throws, but ONLY after we were up by three or four scores and Dobbiins had run wild to leave wide open receivers. We can't expect that against the legit competition, so we need to mix things up whether with play calling or packages, which is how Oklahoma beat us and out-coach us.

HS
buckeye-bengal's picture

I think this was mostly right, but I don't think JTs passing improved.  Even the TD to mack was late and behind him.  Mack just reached back and hauled it in.  This is why I want KJ Hill, Austin Mack, and Ben Victor getting the majority of reps.

HS
Buckeyes17's picture

We will agree to disagree. I think I saw some improvement. No doubt Haskins is better, but I only see us trending upwards and for that I am happy.

"Khajiit has wares if you have the coin."

HS
fear_the_nut70's picture

Yea no doubt a guy who completed 4 passes against Army's second string guys in garbage time is better than the qb who has the most TD's in B1G history.  Fans crack me up.

(And note, Haskins might be.  It's the no doubt that is beyond ridiculous.)

You are entitled to you own opinion, not your own facts.

It should be noted that I meant he is a better passer. I believe he is based off what I've seen from JT.. but I still like JT.

"Khajiit has wares if you have the coin."

HS
boostinbob's picture

Haskins doesn't need to break any of the QB records to be better than JT. If you are so into stats look at JT's vs any team with a pulse.

HS
stuckupnorth's picture

Don't bring logic into it. Hawaii and Houston Texas Tech all set records as well. Must be better.

HS
fear_the_nut70's picture

All of this misses the point--nothing is known about Haskins.  I deal in what is not what might be.  You want to be at fanboy and fall for the hype, go ahead.  And note, Haskins may go on to be the best qb in OSU history or wash out and be a complete bust.  That is the point.

You are entitled to you own opinion, not your own facts.

HS
yantubos's picture

There's no doubt that - from what we saw - Haskins is a crisp, efficient passer. Of course, doing it for a longer period of time, in a meaningful situation, would prove a lot more.

HS
fear_the_nut70's picture

Yan, that is my only point (and I agree, Haskins mechanics do look better).  Very reasoned response.

the fanboy response is that HE IS ALREADY THE BETTER PASSER.  You get the difference in these statements, they don't.

You are entitled to you own opinion, not your own facts.

HS
BuckeyeinFlorida's picture

We looked much better. However don't get to excited. We played a soft opponent. Several areas for much improvement. If we had a game tomorrow against a tough defense... well you all know.
Welcome Mr. Haskins. I hope to see you much much more.
In closing, 500 B1G QB records and 2 bucks gets you a coffee at the gas station.

HS
fear_the_nut70's picture

At Bif(f)

irony here is what JT did with game on the line is dismissed as against a weak opponent but we can draw firm conclusions on what Haskins did against same opponent on four pass plays in garbage time against second stringers.  SMDH.  Fanboys crack me up with their silliness.  (Now cue talk about performances in glorified scrimmages).  I'll take the guy that comes up big on the road against PSU with a sprained  MCL.

You are entitled to you own opinion, not your own facts.

HS

JT will probably never throw a perfect enough pass for most fans here. Haskins will... until he doesnt...

HS

Ha ha, yep.  That is the lure of the backup and why fanboys are drawn to him, he has never let them down.

JT also doesn't get credit for what he does well like pretty much never turn the ball over.

Fanboys will be fanboys, whattya gonna do.

HS
fear_the_nut70's picture

You should read all my responses (e.g. Haskins mechanics look better).  You may not agree with my opinions but I don't say stupid shit (e.g. Haskins is already the better passer because of the four passes he threw tonight).

The LBs have been surprisingly underwhelming this year, and Oklahoma burned us over and over again per their over pursuit, just like last year against Wisconsin in the first half (the Sooners sure looked like they watched that tape). Booker has been a relative no show, which is disappointing given this was supposed to be his year to step up, while Worley, who had a great year last year, hasn't handled his transition well.

Bottom line, except for one play, Tuf looked like a big upgrade.

Well, that seems like it MIGHT be a pretty accurate statement based on reports, the spring game, and the minuscule PT Haskins got today... but the key word in your comment is "waiting". Look, the triple option does this to every team. It takes the highest discipline, endurance, and execution to stop it. I thought the defense did well considering.

My take is Tuf Borland should be our middle linebacker and Worley back to the outside position. Borland was machine like in how he was playing.

I think Kevin Wilson might need to talk to Urban about possibly running a two-QB system. Barrett is still a very effective QB but I don't think it is coincidence that Haskins comes in and starts running the offense like he has been doing it for years. If Kevin Wilson's ideal offense looks like what Haskins was running, we need to seriously think about it.

I have no problem seeing bubble screens when the corner backs are playing 10 yards off the wideout. The 2013 Clemson game comes to mind. Or, really, every game that year with that defense.

If the defense is playing back to prevent a deep pass there is no reason not to hit the easy short passes.

Im not going to over analyze Haskins because it was garbage time against backups of an overmatched opponent, but JT didn't look great. I'm personally over the bubble screens and sideline passes. To that point, it tells you how much Urban thinks he needs to know what Haskins has at game speed. Urban says there's no way he pulls JT, but this action says different. If you remember when Cardale got mop up time in 2014, he never threw.

I don't think Meyer cares about the opinions outside the locker room. I think it was wise to give him a chance to shine when he hasn't had any game experience yet. HS
kareemabduljacobb's picture

Good win, still a lot to work on in both the passing game and pass defense.. but luckily offensively speaking, we have two more shitty teams in a row that hopefully we can build some cohesiveness between JT and the WRs as well as the offense in general.  The running game is always going to be there (when we actually give our RBs the rock).

Dobbins up to 55 carries 425 yards (7.72 ypc) and 3 TDs on the year.   Averaging almost 142 a game.  I'm glad we landed him without even having to put on a full court press for him.  Love those guys who want to be Buckeyes from the get go and come ball out.

Throw Gill in there as well.  I think he's gonna have a big impact as a true freshman as well.  He's got that all around skill set ala Samuel to be pretty nasty as an HBack.  Although, I think Campbell will be back next year.  If he can improve his hands and ability to track and catch deep balls... he can be a nasty weapon for us.  He just glides out there with ease.

HS
rockyincbus's picture

Decent performance by our offense.  Given that Coach is going to stick with JT this year, I hope seeing the ball go in the hoop so to speak will help him with his confidence.  If we are going to play that way going forward, JT needs to work on snapping off those bubble screens because almost every time the defender was able to react and make the hit at the line of scrimmage (and almost every time our superior athlete broke the tackle.)  Dobbins is the real deal and is only going to get better as he grows.  Haskins looked just like we expected. NFL arm and can't wait to see how he handles the blitz, moves in the pocket and all of the other things he will need to be great here.  But, what a difference in rpm.

You've got barbecue back there?

HS
DaiTheFlu's picture

It's so funny to see so many people bashing the "bubble screens". Do you not remember 2014? We ran those and swing passes CONSTANTLY, and with a lot of success. I get that it's not as exciting as a 50-yard bomb, but people don't seem to understand that if you can actually EXECUTE them properly (this is why they often go for no gain or a loss), they serve more of a purpose than gaining 5-10 yards. The TD to T-Mac was based on the constraint of the bubble screen, as the D bit on the fake bubble screen. This also serves to spread the defense out, which opens up our inside zone running game, which if you recall, was a huge part of our success in the 2014 playoff run. Obviously, we need to get better at downfield passing and also the intermediate game, but I did see improvement today. When is the last time we saw JT throw with the authority that he had on the TD's to T-Mac and Austin Mack? Don't forget that those annoying little bubble screens also help get the QB and offense into a rhythm and build confidence. Maybe JT doesn't have the confidence to throw those two TD darts if he hadn't gotten into the flow of the game with completing all those darn "bubble screens". I say keep it up; hopefully by the time PSU comes, we will be able to hit a couple bombs per game to keep defenses honest.

We can't stop here; this is bat country...

HS
kareemabduljacobb's picture

Bubble screens are fine against the Army teams of the world... but they're not gonna work vs a Clemson or Bama especially if we throw that many in a game.  They're good to use to keep D's honest in having to respect those with the hopes of hitting one deep and or behind the secondary for a big gainer but we can't do that right now.

And to be fair, I don't really remember running many bubble screens once 12 Gauge become QB cause he could throw the ball down the field with ease (sort of like Haskins) so we didn't need to do those and we ended up running through Wisky, Bama and Oregon on our way to the title.

HS
DaiTheFlu's picture

I remember several swing/screen passes to Elliot and Jalin Marshall, in particular the Big Ten CG and the game against Oregon. Obviously you won't be quite as successful against a Clemson or Bama, who is faster defensively sideline to sideline. But these have been a huge part of Urban Meyer's offense since UF, when he had burners that could easily get to the edge and get 10+ yards a pop like clockwork. I'm not advocating basing our entire offense around it, but there's a reason they do it as often as they do, as I mentioned above.

I do remember some check downs to EZE on the sidelines during that run but that was usually after Cardale scanned the field and saw nothing there.  But either way, I don't mind the screen/bubble passes.. just not when we run 10+ in a game.  They may work a few times but against good teams and D... they'll adjust after a couple of those.

Speaking of passing, whatever happened to our pop-passes?  Seems like Campbell would be good for those, basically just giving him a handoff except it's a pass which makes the overall passing game look better.

HS
buckeye-bengal's picture

You are missing the point that swing passes would have cost us in the playoffs.  Saban has even said that was how they prepared for OSU to play and didn't expect Jones to sling it deep.  The bubble screen and swing passes can work but you also have to be able to throw it deep so people back off.  That also gives the RBs more room to operate.  The bubble screens don't open up the running lanes because they draw the safeties closer to the line of scrimmage and put more people in the box.

HS
DaiTheFlu's picture

Ok, so Urban's a liar then because that's exactly what he said in his presser after the game. Lol.

We can't stop here; this is bat country...

HS
Chicago Connection's picture

I think the frustration is fair, and at least speaking for me--though I bet a lot of people would agree--this isn't a matter of calling for an end to bubble screens. Instead, it's simply a recognition that the spread is only effective when it truly spread defenses both horizontally and vertically, and we simply haven't proven the ability to do the latter on a consistent basis, and until we establish that threat, legit/comparable opposition will pop our bubbles.

Improvement on offense against an overmatched opponent. It won't be as easy all the time, but should be a confidence boost that was sorely needed. Plays were being made today that were not being made the last few games.

I started the season fully backing Mike Weber to keep his starting job and get the lion's share of carries once he is healthy again. But Dobbins is electric. You can not keep him off the field for long. I'd be fine with a split load, but in my opinion, Dobbins needs to be the primary ball carrier. Can still have a healthy dose of Weber, I still think he's one of the top backs in the conference.

Haskins has a gun. Let's see him do it in something other than garbage time before we anoint him as the next HOFer though. Burrow has looked good before too. And those read options with Williams looked sloppy.

HS
huntinwabbits's picture

I can't wait until garbage time next week.

Said it earlier this week, Bucks can't win this week. If they looked atrocious there would be mass chaos. If they do well, we will attribute it to the opponent. And I do attribute it to the opponent. I want to see progress when we face top ranked teams. I just want them to build off this each and every week and put it together by the time PSU gets into town. It was a good start today. There were some good plays mixed in with the bad ones this week, unlike last week.

My input? He showed improvement but he garnered those stats against an okay team. Talk to me after the Penn State game.

And as far as Haskins, he performed excellent for the one drive he played. Yes this is only one drive against a 2nd string defense, but so far he's batting 1000 with our 2nd string receivers. Not really seeing Urban's "he's not game ready claim yet

HS
tcm1968's picture

So JT gets no love because Army is just an okay team but Haskins is ready for prime-time because he completed a few passes against 2nd and 3rd teamers from that same team??? And when did Mack and Benjamin become 2nd string?

HS
TresselforPres's picture

I said he showed improvement (not hard to do coming off of the terrible performance he had last week) which you would also expect him to have playing against an okay team - so there's my love. I also never stated Haskins was ready for primetime, I said I didn't see the truth in Meyer's claim that he WASN'T ready for primetime. We won't know until he is given a chance in a primetime game. Please don't tell me you went to an Ohio high school, your reading comprehension skills could use improvement.

Huh? He says he doesn't agree with Urban saying Haskins isn't ready for real snaps (primetime).... here's his quote..

I also never stated Haskins was ready for primetime, I said I didn't see the truth in Meyer's claim that he WASN'T ready for primetime.

what exactly did I claim wrong? If you disagree with Urban saying Haskins isn't ready THAT MEANS YOU THINK HE'S READY...

He also said Haskins looked great throwing to 2nd tier receivers and I pointed out 2 of those passes went to Mack and Benjamin ( non 2nd team)..

He also says Haskins was excellent yet JT against the first team was just "improved" and it was against an "okay" team..

I've got no problem with anyone who can back up their problems with JT. Just don't see the point in praising one guy and bashing another when they just played the same "okay" team.

As I said... bad logic...

HS
TresselforPres's picture

If you disagree with Urban saying Haskins isn't ready THAT MEANS YOU THINK HE'S READY...

No it doesn't, and that's not what I think. It means I disagree with Urban from what I have seen thus far, and that Haskins could POTENTIALLY be ready for primetime if Urban ever gives him the chance to see. Who knows, Haskins could go in against Penn State and play like crap.

He also said Haskins looked great throwing to 2nd tier receivers and I pointed out 2 of those passes went to Mack and Benjamin ( non 2nd team)

I'm willing to admit (unlike some people) that I was wrong about this.

He also says Haskins was excellent yet JT against the first team was just "improved" and it was against an "okay" team

Am I wrong? Haskins did do excellent with the opportunities he was given. JT threw out of bounds multiple times, overthrew a few passes, and threw an interception that the defender dropped. And this was all against an okay team, NOT a good team which is what will matter.

I'm done picking you apart, I've got better things to do. Bad logic > No logic

We can't stretch the field in our passing game and Dobbins can stretch the field. Simple as that. You bring Weber in and everyone cheats up because they know they can track him down. Having Dobbins in there keeps the defense honest and allows us to dink and dunk down the field.

The play at QB was solid. JT showed great leadership and made the completions needed.
RB/HB play was off the hook.
The offensive play calling got more into rhythm.
Billy Price and the OL looked dominant at times.
The DBs played well, especially vs. the run/option.
Dwayne Haskins should strike fear in all future opponents.

Guessing they saw enough of our LBs not being able to close or cover the edge so we went to a 4-2-5 nickel defense to allow the speedier DBs to attack the edges. Was just two LBs for the bulk of the game after we made the switch ( Baker and Tuf with 5 DBs).

Buckeye Chuck's picture

Well, that was better.

Army averaged 4 and a half yards per carry, but when you get exactly 4 yards on every rush, it makes them very frustrating to play. They don't commit penalties and rarely lose yardage. Things seemed to tighten up in the second half, and Borland has to get a lot of the credit. He did a terrific job of diagnosing the play. We need to look into getting him more time, because Worley has not made much of an impact inside.

The Army defense just couldn't deal with our speed players. The couple of unsuccessful drives we had were more self-inflicted wounds than anything else. The timing on some of our passing routes was still off, but there was obviously progress. I'm surprised more people in here aren't talking about the work of K.J. Hill today. It looks like he's emerging as Barrett's possession receiver of choice.

I'm sorry about the people who were on 11W this past week saying they had no more interest in watching the team until a change was made at quarterback. They missed a good show.

Dobbins is phenominal and so much fun to watch run that ball. Get your eclipse glasses back out when this kid carries the rock because he is too hot to handle. His change of direction is reminiscent of some of the elite backs of the past 25 years. Pure RAW talent. (Obv. didn't want to compare him directly B. Sanders) Only comparing that slashing, cutting, nastiness i saw in the open field today. Defenders, at times, literally had no chance of stpping him in space. J.K brings the swag with a throwback style. Love his attitude as well. When he gets to the end zone he acts like he's been there before. Can't wait to see him run wild againt ttun.

Loved the sportsmanship at the end of the game Saturday...ending the game in V formation, not trying to run it up, showed much respect. Also singing Carmen Ohio hand in hand with Army players. Class act. Wish there were more of this in college football. All in all, it felt like they put last weeks mess behind them yet they know they have to put their hard hats on and get to work.
