Woodbey knows that these DB's are young and lack experience.  Hooker was a freak and the exception.   It takes time to develop and he knows who will get him to the League.

I'd really like to see a recap on signing day of the ones that were in the shoe on Saturday night that actually commit to Ohio State. I remember during the VA Tech game, we had a DT that I was really hoping we would get, I believe he went to Clemson instead.

Hopefully, things straighten out, but per the online poll, it appears most of us expect to lose at least 2 more games this year. :-(

Here is the problem and history on prospects supports it. September and October is so far away from LOI day that by the time kids make these decisions, the trip is a distant memory.

As fans, we put too much into getting the kids in for these games. Does it help? Yes! Is it a huge difference maker, not really.

HS

I respectfully disagree.  Sitting in the skull session Saturday and seeing 20 plus recruits/families hear Chris Carter, Urban, Schiano, and company speak to the crowd hyped the situation.  And in the fourth quarter when the crowd went from 109K crazy to about 30K quiet with just as many Oklahoma supporters staying, it was a sad sight.  That would be burned into my memory as a recruit.  A somber crowd, a littered campus, and some drunk pissed off fans is their last memory of the shoe.

Crimany, is Andrew the only one writing for this publication?! The man is an animal!

To the bigger picture ... a great article on Yahoo called Opposing coaches on what's wrong with Ohio State: "It's the offense, not the QB."

A sample ...

"The first two games have felt like Wilson trying to get comfortable calling Meyer’s offense, and that left the Buckeyes (1-1) stuck in neutral against Oklahoma. Meyer said Monday to expect a “continuing merging of ideas” of him, Wilson and Day. But so far, according to people who’ve studied the Buckeyes, Ohio State’s scheme hasn’t done service to their talent. “They have some damn athletes,” said a coach who studied the Buckeyes. “Their wide receivers can run and they’re all athletic. Their offensive line is good and there’s two good running backs. There’s no way that an offense like that should put 16 points on the board.”

Thanks for the link! Some great quotes in that article from experts who should know better than anyone else.

I said in another thread that Wilson's innovative and successful background proves that the issue with this offense falls squarely at the feet of Urban Meyer. Bluntly, offensively, this program is in crisis under Meyer's leadership. As one NFL scout put it "It’s like four of the six years Meyer has been there, they’ve had zero identity on offense". As a fan, I need some hope that this thing can be fixed - that I'm not just wasting time rooting on a team whose destiny is already written by a coach who won't get out of his own way. It's one thing to hamper a Beck/Warinner, totally something else to handcuff a relative offensive genius in Kevin Wilson, who's been innovating his entire career.

What I most want from Urban Meyer right now is for him to talk less about the offense and what it needs - I've heard way too much of that from him, and seen too little change after he says it - and for him to go coach the special teams and allow Kevin Wilson to do his job.

HS
BuckeyeLefty's picture

Well said. "Getting out of his own way" ... is spot on.

HS
CanadianBuckeyeEh's picture

Can't disagree with any of the above.  Hate feeling this way, feeling critical of Urban, but we are ALL human and we all have our week spots and blind spots.  Urban is great at teaching leadership.  I hope- no, I PRAY- he is able to look honestly and objectively at things and make the changes necessary to the offense.  If HE is indeed (part of) the problem, that will require humility as well as leadership. Humility is a tough thing to come by because it requires introspection and admitting your own short-comings.  Blessings on him and the team as they move forward and make the hard choices.

Kudos to Andrew for discussing this... "immature" topic....   ;-{)}

Picking out opinions anecdotally can stimulate... or starve... discussion.

To 'build a case' for advocating 'change'... more difficult, and fraught with all the usual agenda temptations.

The reward for solving a problem... is to reveal more, 'better' problems.

But the consequences of NOT solving a problem is that it invariably grows worse, and the only question is how long it festers before 'the usual' 'happens'.

Fairfield five-star offensive tackle Jackson Carman on Monday night became the latest recruit... to take to social media and share his opinion that Ohio State should replace starting quarterback J.T. Barrett with backup Dwayne Haskins.

I was wondering when this guy would weigh in. It was a foregone conclusion, imo, that he would have to opine on the topic.

Just curious as to why you figured Carman would weigh in on this?  My impression of him is that you can't get ANYTHING out of him.

HS
kmp10's picture

Well, it's probably better left unsaid... but since you asked... my impression of him is that he enjoys the attention more than some and has taken a few opportunities over his recruiting process to say some caustic things. I just don't care for his personality based on a few things he's said and the way he carries himself in some game/scrimmage film I've seen. Clearly, he's an athletic and very large high school football player and since he's an Ohio kid I certainly hope he opts to stay in-state and play for the Buckeyes... but he's not my favorite personality type. I'll leave it at that...

Fair enough.  I can see your take.

I like the nastiness he displays on the field however.

I hear you, NHB. Like you, I love nastiness in football players... but to me there's a fine line between bullying, shoving, and standing over/straddling MUCH smaller and physically overmatched players while they're on the ground, and being a nasty o-lineman. Again, it's just my impression of him and I absolutely understand what you're saying and from where you're coming. 99% of the time I'd agree with your sentiment here... but this guy crosses a bit of a line, imo.

This highlights my problem with social media in general. Opinions are like assholes, and I personally want less ways to hear people's opinions, not more. As far as OSU football is concerned, it's unfortunate that while fans have their opinions, prospects are weighing in on it as well. I'm not saying the recruits aren't allowed to have opinions, but that is all they are, and they're uninformed opinions.

Lots of buzz that PSU and OSU are taking a step back for awhile to evaluate Parsons...

HS
buckeye-bengal's picture

Parsons, Carman, Woodbey are all speaking out. Waiting for the next and a few decommits as they begin to realize talent means nothing at Ohio State if UFM has a severe man crush on you and becomes blind to reality. My friend who is a University of Tennessee fan today asked me why Urban is still sticking with JT. Another who is a University of South Carolina fan, was making fun of Ohio State sticking with him as well. OSU shouldn't be there laughing stock but sadly are. I think recruiting will start to bear this as other coaches start using this against OSU.

HS
swainpm's picture

I just rewatched the 1st 3 quarters of the OU game. I have to say that while Barrett didn't light it up the loss is far from his fault alone. Both McLaurin and Hill dropped passes that were 25+ yards in crucial situations. McL would have scored six instead of 3 and Hill would have continued a drive that stalled out late in the 3rd and setup tOSU in the red zone. Now don't get me wrong JTB did underthrow/decide late on at least 3 balls which cost the team a few yards as well. However, he also made quite a few nice reads of when to option and when not to. So thus far the WRs have dropped a few balls and failed to work back to the qb when not open/pocker breaks down. Additionally, Prince was regularly beat by his man and the coaches playcalling oft relied to much on the qb runs instead of the RBs. Add in several plays where the routes run were slow developing and its easy to blame JT. After rewatching the game I can understand both sides after initially thinking another guy should get a chance.

As to the recruiting side of things, who would you rather play for, a coach who pulls a 5th year three time captain and multiple silver football award winner for an unproven commodity or someone who is loyal to the players who lead the lockerroom? I actually think Meyer is planning on JTB starting the next few games but we will see alot more of DH and JB in the late 3rd and 4th quarters (bc JTB gives the team the best chance and his timing and confidence need a little polish). My feelings are recruits will value loyalty just as much as long as they see the 2nd stringers getting some work. And if JTB faulters where its clearly his fault I think Meyer will try someone else for a spark down the road. Lets hope he doesn't need to.

HS
buckeye-bengal's picture

Stop being your stupid self. Recruits are going to watch JT play all game just like last year because he needs to get timing with the WRs. Then recruits will see the loyalty to who Urban picks as his favorite and decide to go elsewhere. Stop trying to fool yourself!!!!!!!!

It can go both ways in my opinion. A terrible game might show the recruits they can step in and play even sooner than expected (WR, OT, LB, DB). A great game might show they would need to wait longer.

I remember Meyer saying that talent is important , but most  important  is a player who is coachable. I wonder how  these comments affect that metric. Certainly, you dont want players who feel they can dictate who plays and who doesn't.

I have a friend who thinks OSu fans are the worst in all of College football.  I was always offended by this. This is my first experiences here on this site after a loss and I am shocked and nauseated  at  how little faith people have in Meyer , etc. and how quickly the pitchforks have come out.

People are sounding like spoiled ungracious brats. Feel free to turn in your " Buckeye card" if it is so miserable rooting for OSU. You wont be missed.

Deserves got nothin' to do with it

HS
swainpm's picture

Growing up in Columbus I will verify tOSU fns are rabid and passionate but often ignorant and disrespectful of others. But every blueblood program has the "what have you done for me lately" mentality. Living in Austin I can tell you at least tOSU fans show up and cheer for the team when they struggle, and at least our fans are loud in big games, raucous and create a great game environment. It could be worse just come watch the funeral procession in Austin at DKR. Worst game experience ever and fickel fans.

HS
bucknutz18's picture

It's best to keep your distance on this site (and all fan sites in general) the few days following a loss.  You can already tell things are starting to go back to normal around here and thank God for that.

HS

OSU fans are demanding and hate losing.

But there is NO WAY we are worse - as a fan base - than Tennessee and Penn State (imo, the bottom 2 by far). People may be vitriolic after a loss, but at least the arguments make sense.

Hey, Seattle

The board- and the fans- are not always like this.  We ARE a rabid, passionate bunch who LOVE our team and Love Urban.
What you're seeing / reading is a huge amount of disappointment and frustration that's been building up over the past couple years, and certainly the last 4-6 games. Fans are frustrated because we see how stagnant the offense has been and we KNOW what a great coach Urban is and how very talented our players are. It is maddening to see all that talent underused, misused or going to waste.

We're like any family- we squabble because WE CARE.   We LOVE our team.

The fact that several recruits are voicing their opinions on the current QB situation cannot make that locker room comfortable at all. The staff had better be dialed into the vibe inside the locker room the next few weeks, to avoid this thing getting out of control.

I've seen this mentioned about Tyreke Smith a few times now.  What's causing Wiltfong to think about flipping his CB?  For a long time, it has seemed like Tyreke was almost guaranteed to be part of the OSU class.  Definitely don't wanna miss on him, especially if Parsons is now unlikely.

You better get used to prospects expressing their opinions about the programs they're considering. All the top athletes stay in constant touch with each other about everything from their chosen schools to commitment dates. Contrary to some opinions these are just kids who make some mistakes. In reality, they are media savvy and have their HS coaches and other advisers helping them with their recruiting. If you read some of the articles on other sites, the opinion is becoming such that recruits feel they can anything about a potential program because the program needs them more than they need the program. Would you care if you had 30 or more offers?

HS

There's been a lot of back and forth b/w Teradja Mitchell and Micah Parsons on IG. Wiltfong must have some solid connections, but everything I've seen on Mitchell's IG (within the last few days) point to Micah still maintaining communication with our recruits, and showing good interest.
