Poor guy. Alzheimers is the death before death, as bad for family members and friends as it is for the patient.

Persevere, Coach Bruce!

Sorry to hear that, Bristol24. I just moved my mother, who is also suffering from Alzheimer's, from assisted living to the memory care unit of a different facility. It's so sad. Prayers to your father and Earle Bruce.

Terrible and scary.  Sorry to hear this Bristol

My dad had this and was generally happy in his confusion. My friend's parents both went to the paranoid dark side of this haneous disease.

Good luck to those families suffering this now

Crappy news for sure. Earle Bruce was the first coach   I remember for the Bucks and he helped start this obsession I have with Buckeye football. Best wishes and continue to fight as I know he will.

Just posting and hoping my comment isn’t deleted.

Played for Bob Tucker, one of the coaches in Coach Bruce's tree.  Everything we did had a foundation in what Coach Bruce and Woody taught.  While not Ohio State it always felt like we were connected to the Buckeyes.  All these coaches made men from boys and we were better for having played for them.  Unfortunately we lost Coach Tucker earlier this year.  God bless Coach Bruce, take the fight to this terrible disease!

I love Coach Bruce. His daughter went to Ohio U and I had the pleasure of sitting with him and his family for my freshman orientation. My favorite memory is when all the players wore headbands in honor of him and went out an beat TTUN while he wore his iconic fedora.

Is "Get Well Soon, Coach Bruce" really the best headline for this news? The sentiment is nice but Let's not kid ourselves or trivialize this; alzheimers is a horrible death sentence and with it comes a laboring deterioration. The reality is that Coach Bruce isn't going to get well. His final years are going to be demoralizing for those in his inner circle. Accept this news for what it is and dont pretend that things will suddenly reverse.

HS
jedkat's picture

seriously? You're seriously going to have this argument now?

"just a guy, nothing more, nothing less" ~ Some troll then *poof* he was gone

HS
bucked up's picture

Yes. He doesnt have "the cold" or something thats going to pass.  This news is tragic and not something to be trivialized with a generic "get well soon"

HS
jedkat's picture

Not saying it needs to be trivialized. I think most people understand the disease for what it is. I'm suggesting a condolences thread might not be the right place to blunt truth it.

"just a guy, nothing more, nothing less" ~ Some troll then *poof* he was gone

HS
bucked up's picture

With all due respect, I think this is the perfect thread for fans of the program to show their support for him in more caring and creative ways than false hope.

BuckeyeNation has stood behind him before when his fate was sealed. And it will do so once more.

HS
jedkat's picture

I'm with you 100% in showing support for him but I disagree with the false hope sentiment. You can recognize the reality of the situation while still showing empathy. It was the lack of empathetic tone in your original comment that I was responding to.

I don't think there are any words that are adequate enough in the face of this news.

It doesn't mean we can't express what we can hope for - in spite of the reality.

I'm not around that much, running exhausted and lost...

HS
Archerm's picture

That was exactly my first thought upon reading the headline. There is currently no "getting better" from this dreadful, unstoppable disease.  I have watched my mother deteriorate for over 10 years now.  My dad used to care for her in their home, because he insisted it be that way.  A great illustration of his love for my mom, but it was too much for him.  He passed away last year (heart problems), I believe partially due to the stress and anxiety caused by caring for her.  She is now living in a memory care senior facility close to me, where she gets care for her daily needs 24/7.  I visit with her and the other residents, several times a week, but mom doesn't know me anymore.  I'm now just a stranger who tries to be nice to her.  I think in reality my visits are for my benefit more than hers.  It really is awful how much they decline. It will not happen, but still it is a nice sentiment. "Get Well Soon, Coach Bruce".

HS
BuckeyeVet's picture

@ Archerm - I feel for you. My mom can still remember my name about 50% of the time, but I know the day is coming. Take care.

Thanks Vet, I feel for you also, knowing that it only gets worse as time goes by. There's really nothing we can do except keep them comfortable and safe. Have a good one.

HS
BGBOY's picture

I can emphasize with you. My father-in-law had Alzheimer's. My mother-in-law tried everything to help him. She insisted on taking care of him disregarding her own health. She was very active until she had a stroke and passed away. He lasted about another seven months. Worst year in the life of my wife. One can only comfort them and take into consideration that they really don't understand what they are saying. He said some pretty hurtful things to my wife in his latter days.

You can tune a piano but you can't tuna fish.

HS
Archerm's picture

BG, you're totally right about the things they might say.  I never heard my mom raise her voice in anger until these last few years.  After my dad passed I found a video recording he made of mom one dreadful afternoon when she was threatening him with a knife and calling him every name in the book.  She was out-of-control. Thankfully she is much calmer now.  I'm not sure if that is her progression or just the fact that the nurses are much better at getting pills in her, while dad struggled to get her to take the medicine.  Thanks for the reply.  I'm gonna stop now as I don't want to be accused of trying to turn this into an Alzheimer's therapy forum.

As a hospice nurse (you have to pronounce my user id out loud to get it) I can tell you that Alzheimers patients do indeed have a tragic disease process they will go through, but every single person whose life touches his/hers in any way will also have a process that they must go though.  This even extends as far out as the fan base of a beloved coach.  The tricky thing is to understand that everyone's process is different and unique and you have to try to be understanding and nonjudgmental and supportive of each and every one.  Some folks are gonna go into denial, some will be sad and depressed, others will be angry, and so forth.  The best thing you can do is just understand that each person's process is their own and specifically necessary in order for them to cope.  You don't need to agree with the way they are dealing with it.  You just have to be nice.

I met Coach Bruce about 3 years ago when he was our Honorary Captain at the Inaugural Border Classic game.  I worked with The OHSFCA on it.  I met him at the banquet and we spoke about the team he had back when I was in school which had Spielman, Carter, Lanese, Lachey, Loudermilk, Uhlenhake, Tomszak, Karsatos etc.  He spoke about that team like it was yesterday and knew wha each one of them was doing now.  The next day I met him on the field again and without prompting he remembered my name and said how great it was to reminisce about that team.  Sharp as a tack.  This news saddens me very much.  I wish Coach well in his battle.

Terrible news for Buckeye Nation.  We wish you and your's peace and strength through these difficult times, Coach.

Side note - Over here on the left coast I'm not as plugged into Ohio news as I once was, so maybe I missed something earlier.   Not trying to cast aspersions where none are warranted but, if that tweet was the first news of this sad situation, I hope that it was done with the blessings of the family and that they weren't sandbagged by this.  He is certainly a public figure in Ohio, but still deserves to be able to control the release of his own health info.

I too met Coach at a Columbus watering hole.  He had met one of his players to talk about another player that had fallen on hard times.

The player left and we spoke.  Got to tell him I was a really big fan.  He was most humble and did not seem too interested in compliments.  But he did say thanks.  It was a short conversation, but a treasured time.

After he left, the bartender said she was privy to multiple conversations of the sort I heard.  If anyone needed something he did his best to help.  Seems to be a trend with most tOSU Coaches.  It is always said you win with people.  That starts with the folks at the top too.

Earle's history with OSU actually pre-dates Woody's. He was recruited and played for Wes Fesler in 1950 on the freshman team in Fesler's last year. He was a back up to Vic Janowicz

He played for Woody of course then coached for Woody (twice, as GA then as an actual assistant).

Later of course becoming head coach for 9 years

And 2 of his assistants (Tressel and Meyer) have been our HC for 16 of the last 17 years.

His grandson is one of our assistants for the last 6 years.

His coaching tree includes Meyer, Tressel, Dantonio (GA at OSU), Pelini (former player), Glen Mason, Dom Capers, Pete Carroll, Nick Saban, Gary Blackney, Joe Bugel, Mike Debord (the current OC for Indiana who we play this week), Skip Holtz and Ray Jackson (Player personal Director for the Steelers who played for him at Colorado St.

Since 1951, that's a 67 year history with this University.

Hoping for the nest for him and his family!!!

He was also a great HS head coach at a few schools most notably Massillon Tigers who won undefeated back to back national championships in his 2 years there.  In his first asst HS coaching job he worked under Bill Peterson who would end up being HC at FSU for several years before Bowden.

Some of his other assistants/players include: Fred Pagac, Chuck Heater, Tom Lichtenberg (HC at Maine and Ohio U), Bill Conley (LT OSU asst and recruiting coord plus HC at Ohio Dominican), Pepper Johnson (DL coach NY Jets among others), Tim Spencer (LT OSU asst and now RB coach for TB Bucs), Fred Zechman (who was HC of NM St for 3 years), Steve Szabo )HC at Edinboro for 3 years and a LT college and NFL asst),

I'm sorry. That's hard news for him, for his family, and for Buckeye nation. I hope that OSU finds a way to honor and acknowledge him while he is still able to appreciate it. I will never forget when Ronald Reagan wrote such gracious words about his diagnosis:

At the moment I feel just fine. I intend to live the remainder of the years God gives me on this earth doing the things I have always done. I will continue to share life’s journey with my beloved Nancy and my family. I plan to enjoy the great outdoors and stay in touch with my friends and supporters.

Unfortunately, as Alzheimer’s Disease progresses, the family often bears a heavy burden. I only wish there was some way I could spare Nancy from this painful experience. When the time comes I am confident that with your help she will face it with faith and courage.

In closing let me thank you, the American people for giving me the great honor of allowing me to serve as your President. When the Lord calls me home, whenever that may be, I will leave with the greatest love for this country of ours and eternal optimism for its future.

I now begin the journey that will lead me into the sunset of my life. I know that for America there will always be a bright dawn ahead.

Thank you, my friends. May God always bless you.

I hope that Coach Bruce also has the opportunity to express his appreciation to OSU sooner rather than later.
